This talent got nerfed. It used to work on
Ice Barrier
aswell.
Now it only works with
Mage Ward
and
Mana Shield
, which both got buffed thus making the nerf a bit more bearable =)
Mage Ward = the replacement of Frost Ward and Fire Ward, in addition to absorbing frost and fire damage, it also absorbs arcane damage.
Mana Shield got a buff because it absorbs damage to mana in a 1:1 ratio now. instead of 1:1,5 ratio.
But in the end, this is still a bad change for the Frost mages out there. The amount absorbed by Ice Barrier, with the spell power of the mage and perhaps the
glyph
was immense. On level 80 I already reached 4.3k easily. A 20% spellpower increase on that would mean 860 spellpower. Which would only increase the effect of further shielding (with mana shield or a ward spell) which would increase your spellpower.. Which would in turn increase Ice Barrier again. Well this rotation won't work anymore now =(.
In short: Fire and Arcane mages got buffed with these changes. Frost mages got a slight nerf.

I've got a concern with this spell. I'm still a little fresh to my level 80 arcane mage, so sorry if I'm wrong. I just did a run through what I thought would be the highest dps for raids, and i ended up with 1 point in this talent. It was the last one i picked too because of how problematic I thought it might be. Now mana shield is not something I want to use in pve, but if iceblock is down and i cant blink away from the damage, its all i got to survive sometimes. Now for single target bosses, sure, this will be a small increase to dps. (assuming mana isnt an issue) but wtf will happen in fights with lots of little adds running around. if i just casted mana shield (to survive or for the dmg increase) and some group of adds happen to run by me, if that shield breaks from some random raid wide AoE, those adds will be launched everywhere, and ill hear as much screaming in vent as when i found out im not allowed to use thunderstorm on my shaman lol. but thunderstorm i can pop whenever. i cant really control when mana shield will break if theres like 5 sources of damage so, either i cant raid with this spec, I have to pay special attention to adds next to me that otherwise i would not have cared, or, im gonna have to remove this shield pretty much instantly by right clicking or macro. all of these sound bad to me :(

Funny how I don't see the main reason I see this talent as worthless. Arcane dmg is based on how much mana you have left. If you have mana shield up you'll burn through mana really quick.

In some situations, the kickback effect might be even more valuable than the main effect of this talent. And it is exactly the same for both ranks of the talent, so it might be a good idea to only get rank 1.
It would have been heaps more useful if it was still possible to cast low-rank mana shield... But alas, mages are now too proud of themselves to ever be seen purposefully cast a weakened spell :(

This talent is bugged it only increases your spell damage by 10% of the amount absorbed NOT 20% like the tooltip says.

Personally, I've taken 2/2 out of this for my raiding spec.
A lot of damage coming into fights is unavoidable damage. When this damage is absorbed, we lose some mana (or nothing, if it's mage ward) and gain Spellpower. At 85, with my current gear (6098 SP unbuffed) my Mage Ward absorbs 7099 and my Mana Shield absorbs 6407.
If my
Mage Ward
Absorbs 7k damage = 7099 / 5 =
1419 spellpower for 10 seconds
.
I lose 2786 mana for cast.
If my
Mana Shield
absorbs 6.4k damage = 6407 / 5 =
1281 spellpower for 10 seconds
.
I lose 6407 mana from absorb.
I'd see this talent coming very useful in fights where you can predict and mitigate damage. For example, on Chimaeron using this during feud helps your survivability and boosts damage. On Nefarian using mage ward in phase 2 would also be worth spellpower and survivability. What this generally does is provides you a way to avoid/absorb damage during high damage periods and convert it into spellpower to boost your own dps!
Overall, this is situational to an extent, but since the spellpower offered is comparable with trinkets, It's well worth its points. If you're not having issues with mana, this talent is a great way to
mitigate damage
and
boost dps
. That said, as with most Cataclysm specs, it's
up to the preference of the user
.

On live this talent tooltip is bugged. It says your spell damage is increased by 10/20% of the amount absorbed for 10 sec but the actual amount of spellpower gained is 5/10%.
On 4.1 PTR, however, the talent has been corrected and now provides 10/20% of absorbed damage as spellpower.

Mage Ward
and your
Mana Shield
break at the same time, the amount spellpower gained will stack.
Just perfect if you find yourself in a situation you have to pop your mana gem (thus starting your burn phase) right after any kind of massive elemental raid-AE damage, like the
Beth'tilac
Encounter (phase 2).
