this spell's tooltip leaves much to be desired. I only do m+ so this is all from that perspective:
first off what is "nearby"? what is the range on this thing?
secondly, a pretty important thing that the tooltip just forgets to mention is that, despite what the name and animation imply, this is not a channeled spell, but merely a delayed effect happening on your character. what i mean by this is that it cannot be interupted or silenced by eg. the quaking affix or enemy kicks like the bird boss in algathar academy. for all effects and purposes you character is NOT casting or channeling during emerald communion, instead you are just sitting there afk.
the reason you cannot continue using your other spells during emerald communion is because it also silences you for the duration, another "small detail" the tooltip so just happens to leave out.
it also pacifies you, so you cannot exploit this spell further by... uhm... autoattacking for a free 220 dmg during it, if you happened to be in melee range to begin with.
As far as its actual use goes, this is a pretty useful tool to have in dungeons. It's a lay on hands except it doesn't overheal, and its healing mechanic is pretty smart too as it always goes for the lowest hp ally in range. in layman terms, this shoots about 1.5 verdant embrace worth of healing every 0.8 sec. You cannot expect it to solo carry aoe healing checks (eg. eye of the storm in halls of valor) like a rewind or a properly prepared stasis does, but its the next best thing. Since evoker is a combo-based healer, this spell serves as a gap filler for when your dreambreath is down, you don't have leaping flame stacks, and your Spiritbloom is down as well or you dont have time to empower it to full. If your only option for 4-5 sec is single target living flames, but the damage intake doesn't permit this luxury, emerald communion will be your stepping stone. This is also why its excessive 3 minutes cooldown is not that big of a deal. If you play properly, you're not going to need it much more often than that.
As far as its 2 follow up choose-one talents are concerned, the HP increasing one is the greedier option as it 1) causes emerald communion itself to heal for 20% more, 2) makes you tankier to oneshots for 15 sec and 3) increases your dps slightly through Lifeforce mender (this is very minor). The 2nd and 3rd points are very niche, the main benefit is the 20% increased healing on emerald communion. However, you need to keep in mind that very few fights allow you to sit in 1 spot for a whole 4.5 seconds. If you clip even ONE tick due to having to move, it already breaks even, and most of the time you will have to clip more than that. Even if you do manage to get the full channel off without moving, your positioning will most likely be so gimped afterwards, you will have to struggle to fix it, and evoker range is already one of their pain points. it just puts a ton of strain on you from an ability thats supposed to aleviate strain, not add more. IMO its safer -and for 90% of the players better- to just grab the movement talent and never look back.
Only reason to grab the max hp talent is if you're pushing +30 keys with super studied fight patterns and you know exactly when and where you're going to use EC, and also you cannot survive an unavoidable damage event even with obsidian scales, so you NEED the 20% max hp. This is why you will see most famous streamers pick that talent. That's a trap, those people play very differently with their dedicated premade groups than your average lfg evoker does with his pugs. Don't copy their talent builds point for point, use your better judgement.
