Important Changes to Leveling a Monk in the Shadowlands Pre-Patch
The Shadowlands Covenant system is not being released in pre-patch, so will not be covered here. Players will not have the opportunity to choose a Covenant until their first character reaches level 60 in Shadowlands.
There is a new tab on your spellbook between General and your talent specialization, simply titled "Monk". These are abilities that are now shared by all Monks regardless of any specialization they choose.
New Monks will not begin in a default spec (Windwalker) as they have in previous expansions. Until they are allowed to choose a spec at level 10, their abilities are drawn from the general Monk abilities available to all specializations, and at level 10 they will be prompted to select a specialization.
Experienced Monks will notice some talents have been reworked or rearranged, and may require re-acquiring some talents.
AoE (Area of Effect) caps are being introduced in the Shadowlands pre-patch, which places a limit on how many targets the ability can hit at once. This affects some Monk abilities.
Best Monk Leveling Spec in Shadowlands
Monks can excel in all 3 major roles: they can tank, heal, or damage foes from close range, with stark differences on their combat styles: Brewmaster is their tanking spec, and revel to the point of intoxication with absorbing blows from enemies. Mistweaver Monks call upon the restorative powers of the Mists to heal their allies. Windwalker Monks use fast-paced, fearsome kicks to deal damage to close enemies. Learn more about each specialization options in our Tanking, Healing, and Melee DPS overviews.
Although each specialization has strengths and weaknesses, we recommend
Brewmaster
as the best Monk leveling spec. Great survivability and healing coupled with area damage make this spec kill groups of mobs fairly easily. You will also experience near instant queues in dungeons as a tank.
However, many players have also chosen
Windwalker
as their choice of best Monk leveling spec. Interesting cooldowns to deal with tougher mobs and great self-healing makes this spec one of the tougher melee DPS specs in the game.
Mistweaver
is great fun, though it can be a bit complicated for a brand new player, and it's more difficult to solo than the other two specs. However, you'll always be welcome in dungeon groups, and Mistweavers in PvP Battlegrounds can rack up Honor by healing their allies (and getting credit for their kills as a result).
Choosing a Monk Specialization
Before level 10, you are just a Monk with some general abilities. When you reach level 10, you get to pick one of the three specializations: Brewmaster, Mistweaver, or Windwalker.
At level 10, you will select a specialization. You can swap between specializations by opening up the Specialization & Talents tab (or pressing N to open it quickly), choosing the specialization you like, and clicking the Activate button. There is no cost to swapping!
Brewmaste
r: Use
醉酿投
to coat enemies with beverages, and set them on fire with
火焰之息
.
幻灭踢
strikes a single enemy for Physical damage, and
猛虎掌
is used to reduce the cooldown on your several Brews. Brewmaster tanking is based on keeping all enemies coated with
火焰之息
.
Mistweaver
:
活血术
is your default single target healing spell, and it increases healing from your other spells.
氤氲之雾
is needed when you need a really big heal.
抚慰之雾
is a channeled spell that allows you to cast Vivify and Enveloping Mists on a target faster.
精华之泉
is used to heal multiple targets.
雷光聚神茶
is a short cooldown that empowers your next healing cast so use it often. Keep
复苏之雾
on yourself as a Heal over Time.
Windwalker
: Use
猛虎掌
to build Chi and spend it on
旭日东升踢
,
怒雷破
and
幻灭踢
.
神鹤引项踢
is used to damage multiple enemies around you.
轮回之触
is a cooldown that deals half your maximum health to enemies after a few seconds. Windwalker's damage is dependent on managing your Energy and Chi.
Choosing a Race for Your Monk in Shadowlands
Choosing your race can be an arduous task, as it defines our character's appearance and is an expensive trait to change. Unlike in the past, Racial Traits don't give players many throughput benefits, most race perks are limited to utility or profession bonuses.
Most Races can be Monks. The only exceptions to this are Worgen and Lightforged Draenei on the Alliance side, and Goblins on the Horde side.
Default Races
are races that are immediately available to be played when you start your WoW account.
Allied Races
are races that are locked behind certain requirements that need to be met before you can create characters belonging to that race.
Each race has different racial abilities and spells, but no races offer an immediate advantage when compared to others, so you can create your Monk to be whatever race suits your aesthetic best! Monks can choose from the following races (click on the race names to learn more about them!):
Alliance
Default Races:
德莱尼
矮人
侏儒
人类
暗夜精灵

Best Monk Leveling Rotation in Shadowlands
Monks can do it all -- tanking, healing, and damage -- so it's entirely possible to have a fully balanced dungeon party with nothing but Monks on board! For this reason, their leveling rotations will be very different from one another, even though they share many similar abilities.
Optimal Brewmaster Monk Ability Use While Leveling
醉酿投
is your main attack, hitting all nearby targets and slowing their movement speed. At higher levels, you will also have
火焰之息
, to coat Keg Smash targets with flames.
幻灭踢
deals significant single-target damage.
猛虎掌
deals damage, and reduces the cooldown on your Brews for 1 second each time it's used.
醉拳
is the main Brewmaster mechanic. Whenever you take damage, part of this damage is delayed, and turned into a periodic effect that hurts you over 10 seconds. To manage this, you can use 2 different Brews.
天神酒
helps you absorb damage up-front, and
活血酒
clears 50% of your damage delayed with Stagger.
Elite Mobs:
Make sure to always maintain a low Stagger amount (
轻度醉拳
). Dealing with enemies should be fairly easy, but make sure to always clear your Stagger to manageable levels with
活血酒
and
天神酒
.
Lots of small mobs:
Also fairly easy with the combo of
醉酿投
and
火焰之息
. You can kite mobs around with
滚地翻
while waiting for Keg Smash's cooldown.
Dungeons:
The instructions above should work well for dungeons as well. Remember to keep mobs off other players with
嚎镇八方
and interrupt dangerous spell casts with
切喉手
. Make sure to abuse
扫堂腿
to stun enemies.
Optimal Mistweaver Monk Ability Use While Leveling
Dungeons
:
活血术
is your most basic heal and the one you will be using the most.
抚慰之雾
is an active ability, no longer being channeled after a spell cast.
抚慰之雾
is your main tank heal, with Enveloping Mist being cast through it in order to heal someone dangerously low.
复苏之雾
has a mechanic later on that allows
活血术
to heal the group better. On targets that need more healing, use
氤氲之雾
and keep channeling
抚慰之雾
for its duration.
复苏之雾
is a periodic healing effect that will switch to another injured target in case your intended target reaches full health, so it's alright to use it on cooldown. Make sure to use
扫堂腿
to stun enemies.
Optimal Windwalker Monk Ability Use While Leveling
Use
猛虎掌
to generate Chi and use it on
幻灭踢
,
旭日东升踢
or
怒雷破
. Rising Sun Kick deals the most damage to a single target, while Fists of Fury is best for multiple targets.
Elite Mobs:
For elites you have powerful cooldowns like
业报之触
that can help you survive most encounters. With our suggested talents, you have access to more cooldowns like
真气波
to aid you in surviving.
轮回之触
is also a powerful damage cooldown as it deals a percentage of your maximum health in damage.
Lots of small mobs:
怒雷破
and
神鹤引项踢
are your go to Chi spenders on multiple mobs.
扫堂腿
is even better as it will stun all enemies.
Dungeons:
: The instructions above should work well for dungeons as well. Remember to interrupt dangerous spell casts with
切喉手
. Make sure to abuse
扫堂腿
to stun enemies.
Best Weapons and Gear for Leveling a Monk in Shadowlands
Monks are a leather-wearing class and use a variety of weapons depending on their spec.
Brewmaster monks prefer two-handed weapons Staff and Polearm.
Mistweavers use either Staff and Polearm, or a one-handed Axe, Mace, or Sword with an offhand.
WIndwalkers are dual wielders and can use any combination of one-handed weapons in each hand: axe, sword, mace, and fist weapons. While they can equip Polearm and Staff, they should always dual wield one-handers.
Monk Heirlooms in Shadowlands
Heirloom gear is a special gear category that scales with your current level, can be created on the fly with the Heirloom menu, and offers set bonuses when multiple heirloom pieces are worn. The heirloom set bonuses are listed below:
(2) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by 30%.
(3) Set: Increases your out-of-combat regeneration in the outdoors, normal dungeons and battlegrounds.
(4) Set: Gaining a level triggers Burst of Knowledge, dealing Holy damage to nearby enemies and granting you 40% primary stat for 2 minutes. Defeating additional enemies extends this effect, up to 2 additional minutes.
(6) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by an additional 30%.
Heirlooms have made a major change with Shadowlands -- the experience bonuses are gone. Instead, there will be set bonuses for wearing up to 6 different types of Heirloom armor pieces. The new set bonus can be obtained from all Heirloom pieces except weapons, shields, and trinkets, so body armor pieces, necklaces, and rings count.
For more information on the state of heirlooms in Shadowlands, check our heirloom changes guide.
Heirloom Changes in Shadowlands

Although Heirlooms themselves are not as valuable as they once were, the Heirloom mount,
代驾型摩托
, is still very valuable, as it is one of the only mounts you can use from level 1. You can obtain this mount by completing the achievement
传家宝收藏家
.
Relics of the Past
Relics of the Past are a new profession reagent added in Shadowlands. When crafting profession items and adding them to the craft, these items will have their item level and required level changed. All crafting professions can craft Relics of the Past, and these are the Relics of the Past that can be crafted:
故往神器 I
: Set the Item Level to 23 and the Required Level to 15.
故往神器 II
: Set the Item Level to 33 and the Required Level to 25.
故往神器 III
: Set the Item Level to 43 and the Required Level to 35.
故往神器 IV
: Set the Item Level to 56 and the Required Level to 45.
故往神器 V
: Set the Item Level to 100 and the Required Level to 50.
These are not very useful for leveling, as you should be outleveling items fairly quickly through your leveling experience in Shadowlands, but it can be a fun experience to level using items from the past.
Stat Weights while Leveling in Shadowlands
Stat Weights are usually not that important while leveling, as considering the nature of quest rewards, you will almost never be able to gather enough for a specific stat or keep a piece of gear for long enough for looking for stats to be a worthy endeavor.
In the case of leveling, a piece with higher item level than the one you have equipped will almost always be better, as pieces with higher item levels will always have more Agility and Stamina.
Best Monk Leveling Professions in Shadowlands
If leveling quickly is your goal, your best bet is to go double-gatherer of
草药学
and
采矿
. Both skills give small amounts of experience when you mine a node or pick an herb, and you can sell the results in the Auction House (how well these sell for and for how much depends a great deal on your server economy).
剥皮
is also a gathering profession, but unlike
草药学
and
采矿
, it does not give experience.
The classic profession for a Monk is
制皮
, which is often paired with
剥皮
, since you can wear the things you make. In past expansions, this was largely a losing proposition, since you outleveled any gear you could make. However, in Shadowlands,
制皮
deserves another look. Many of the items you can make have more utility function, as well as the ability to make the base items necessary for leather wearers to create Legendary items.
炼金术
is also a good profession for Monks, since the ability to make their own potions and flasks helps keep them more self-reliant.
Best Monk Questing Path in Shadowlands
In Shadowlands, players will go through a massive level squish, and with it, leveling paths are severely changed. The current level path for Shadowlands goes as follows:
Levels 1-10:
Your race's Starting Area or Exile's Reach
Levels 10-50:
Battle for Azeroth zones or other expansion zones via Chromie Time
Levels 50-60:
Shadowlands Storyline or Threads of Fate
Brand new characters are required to do Exile's Reach for levels 1-10 and Battle for Azeroth for levels 1-50.
There is no innate advantage to level in whatever zones you'd like at levels 1 through 50, the only advantage being you will leave Exile's Reach with a close to full set of Uncommon-quality armor. There are innate advantages to leveling in each expansion - Vanilla is more friendly for those who can't fly, Wrath of the Lich King is very linear, Warlords of Draenor has a lot of treasures and bonus objectives, Legion has access to powerful Artifact weapons, etc.
For levels 50-60, for your first time going through Shadowlands, you are forced to follow the order Bastion > Maldraxxus > Ardenweald > Revendreth, but for subsequent characters, you will be able to choose what zone order you want to go through.
For more information about the Shadowlands leveling changes and level squish, check our guide:
Shadowlands Leveling Changes & Level Squish
Threads of Fate Leveling
Threads of Fate is a new system added in the Shadowlands expansion. The Threads of Fate system allows you to level alts through completion of World Quests, Bonus Objectives, exploring the Shadowlands zones in a non-linear way. This system grants you an early start on Covenant progress and early access to bonuses such as Shadowlands reputations. For more information on the Threads of Fate system, check our guide!

Shadowlands Monk Leveling Gameplay Mechanics
Using Mana, Energy and Chi on Your Monk
Monks have three different ways of displaying resources, dependent on what specialization they're in:
Brewmaster Monks have
能量
as their primary resource. Energy is a fast-recovering resource and used to power most of their attacks. On the default UI, you will also have a
醉拳
bar, a small bar below your Energy bar, to display how much damage you have delayed with Stagger. The bar changes color according to how much damage you have staggered: Green for
轻度醉拳
, Yellow for
中度醉拳
and Red for
重度醉拳
.
Mistweaver Monks have
法力值
as their primary resource. All Mistweaver abilities use mana. Different spells have different
法力值
costs, some being more efficient like
活血术
and others have more effects but cost more mana, like
氤氲之雾
. Mana regenerates very slowly on its own during combat, so knowing when to use each healing spell efficiently is a vital part of being a healer.
Windwalker Monks have
能量
as their primary resource. Windwalker's basic abilities like
猛虎掌
use Energy to generate
真气
. Chi is exclusively used by Windwalker Monks and used on their stronger abilities like
旭日东升踢
. Windwalker Monks have up to 5 Chi, and Chi depletes out of combat.
A Brewmaster Monk with Moderate Stagger, a Mistweaver with a Mana Bar, and a Windwalker with 0 Chi available to use.
Monk Utility
Monks have an assortment of utility spells, like
分筋错骨
to incapacitate a foe, and
轮回转世
to bring an ally back to life. They also have incredible mobility thanks to
滚地翻
, used to burst forward a short distance, and
魂体双分
at higher levels, used to teleport back to a distinct point
扫堂腿
can be used to stun targets for a few seconds. Their talents have extra utility with spells like
迅如猛虎
to increase an ally's movement speed.
Brewmaster and Windwalker Monks get additional utility with
切喉手
as an interrupt. Windwalker Monks can incapacitate targets further with
金刚震
, and Mistweavers can resurrect their entire party or raid with
死而复生
.
平心之环
also has some interesting uses, both as a spell interrupt (hard to cast when you're flying through the air) and as a way to move mobs out of damaging ground effects. Your melee-range party members will thank you for it.
Shadowlands Monk Class Abilities
Starting Abilities: Exile's Reach and 1-10 Zones
The first ability all level 1 Monks receive is
猛虎掌
, your first attack ability. It strikes your enemy with the palm of your hand, causing Physical damage.
At level 2, you learn
幻灭踢
, which kicks your enemy with a blast of Chi power, doing Physical damage.
At level 3, you learn
滚地翻
, which gives you the ability to Roll a short distance (you can even use it when dead!)
At level 4, you learn
活血术
, a healing spell you can use on yourself or on allies.
At level 5, you learn
碎玉闪电
, a channeled spell with a 40-yard range that does low damage and sometimes knocks back melee attackers. Very useful for pulling from a distance, or getting a quick attack on a mob already being attacked by another player.
At level 6, you learn
扫堂腿
, a kick that knocks down all enemies within 6 yards and stuns them.
At level 7, you learn
神鹤引项踢
, a spinning kick in the air, dealing damage to all around you.
At level 8, you learn,
移花接木
, which heals you and deals 10% of the amount healed as Nature damage to an enemy within 8 yards.
At level 9, you will learn the second rank of
强化滚地翻
, which adds a second charge to the ability.
At level 10, you learn,
轮回之触
, You exploit the enemy target's weakest point, instantly killing creatures that have less health than you. When you specialize, it has different effects based on your spec. If you leveled up in Exile's Reach, you may get this ability a couple levels sooner through the monk class quest.
At level 10, you will have to choose a specialization. You can choose a specialization by pressing N, then selecting one specialization and click on Activate. You will then start learning spells that define the specialization you chose.
If you created an Allied Race Monk, i.e. Void Elf, Dark Iron Dwarf, Mechagnome, Nightborne or Vulpera, you will start as a level 10 Monk with all the above abilities learned. You can choose a specialization immediately after logging on your Allied Race character for the first time.

Do monks have the weapon quest at lvl 20 like all the other classes?

For those who want to level a monk but are doing so beside other classes keep one thing in mind. At level 20 you unlock Monk training at the Peak of Serenity. You will get this quest every 10 levels after as well. Completing the quest will reward with a piece of gear/a weapon but also a 50% XP boost that stacks on top of looms for 1 hour. However, it should be noted you only get this XP boost from killing mobs that award XP or from completing a quest. You will not get it for the dungeon completion credit, that will just be normal looms bonus. Moreover, you can also receive this quest daily as well and the duration of the bonus stacks up to 24 hours. So get your monk to level 20 at least to unlock the Enlightenment quest and its daily, then just log in once a day to run it while you level other classes.
Then you can come back in like a week and burn through nearly 8 hours of XP bonus or wait 2 weeks and burn through nearly 16 hours. It will be enough to get you to the next level milestone to do the quest again. This way you can level 2 classes or more at once while keeping your monk up to date, it will remain around the same level as your other classes due to the xp bonus. It is also a good tactic if you want to level a monk but just don't have time to commit to the game for a week or so. Unfortunately, this bonus turns to pure mastery after I think level 85.

Is the 1% magical nightborne racial bonus completely worthless to monks? Assuming all their damage is physical. Would like to switch from UD for the inscription and and mailbox racials, but not sure it is worth it.

How does a Monk leveling guide neglect to mention the Monk-only +50% XP boost they can get from Peak of Serenity?

Is there a guide that tells you what the best low level enchants are? I want to level in dungeons as mistweaver and it's fun to use the best enchants. I don't know why it says not to level as mistweaver >.> every spec in the game is fun for some.
