Kill General Vezax on the hard mode on normal dificulty.
Vezax spawns a total of 6 Saronite Crystals over time. Killing these Saronite Crystals creates
Saronite Vapors
on the ground, which allow casters standing in them to regain mana to counter the effects of the permanently active
Aura of Despair
.
If no Crystals are destroyed, eventually 6 Crystals will be alive at the same time. These Crystals then merge to form the the add
Saronite Animus
. This add casts the stacking damaging debuff
Profound Darkness
on the raid and Vezax gains the immunity buff
Void Barrier
as long as this add is alive and stops casting
Searing Flames
.
Lack of mana regeneration means that caster DPS without functioning mana-regaining mechanics will have to make extensive use of the
Shadow Crash
buff and resort to wanding when not buffed. Healers will have to be very conservative with their mana to ensure they have enough left at the end to heal the massive AoE damage from the Saronite Animus.
This achievement requires the raid to kill this add before killing Vezax. Since Vezax is invulnerable as long as the add is alive, this seems like a sensible approach once the Saronite Animus has spawned. The entire raid being hit by increasing AoE damage while healers are running on fumes also makes it advisable to kill the Saronite Animus in a timely manner. Killing any Crystals before the 6th is spawned will make sure the Saronite Animus never spawns, as will killing Vezax before the 6th Crystal has spawned (though it is not likely this is possible).

We just did this achievement yesterday. It wasnt really a dps fight, we did it even without a shaman, that means no melee buffs, and no bloodlust.
Our setup was:
- Holy Paladin (Fong)
- Discipline Priest (Akashi)
- Resto Druid (Bami)
- Prot. Warrior (Arees)
- Frost Mage (Selenia)
- Combat Rogue (Ibackstabuqq)
- Arms Warrior (Gfx)
- Fury Warrior (Endzeit)
- Feral DPS Druid (Zuuc)
This fight is not a dps race, its a survival and a healing fight which requires the least overhealing possible.
We choose to make 2 camps, 1 melee camp, which is on the boss 100%, and 1 caster camp, @ max range from the boss.
After 4 minutes or so, when all the vapors have spawnd, Vezax will create an add. This add has 2 million hitpoints and we let our warrior tank it aswell, he will get more dmg from that point on.
We managed to create a tactic in which our 3 healers were on 85% mana when the add spawnd.
Holy paladin point of view:
We let the Holy paladin walk with the melee. If the holy paladin is with the caster group, he has to move to much due to shadowcrashes and marks. When he was @ the melee group he almost didnt have to move at all, only during kiting, but the tank wont get any dmg. The Healing from the paladin was almost 100% flash of light. Because the tank had Hots and shields on him, the paladin only healed when the tank was below 75% to minimise overhealing.
Discipline priest point of view:
Now it gets interesting. The Resto druid and the Discipline do benefit from the black puddles. Basically what the discipline priest does: When a puddle is up, he goes into the puddle, and casts a shield on the main tank. that shield absorbs the same as if you would be standing out of the puddle, but it has its mana cost reduced by 70%. Then, i dont know much about discipline priests, but a discipline priest can gain procs in which his penance is a free cast. At those moments he uses penance. But be sure to not stand in the black puddle, cause the healing output will be reduced by 70% aswell.
So basically: Stand in puddles to spam shields for 70% mana reduced, and get out of them asap for penance or flash of light.
Resto druid point of view:
This is even more interesting, i never healed this fight before, i was always boomkin, i thought resto druids would suck to the max cause of the small mana pool, and the immense spirit regen, and the new lifebloom mechanic. I was FALSE. I was topping healing meters, and my mana was just not going empty! First of all. I used the Rejuvenation idol which has a ~140 reduced mana cost on Rejuvenation. Also, i used the Spark of Hope trinket. Which reduces mana cost by all my spells by 42 mana.
At the start of the fight, hot up the tank with Rejuvenation and Regrowth. Cause of the discipline priest and the Flash of light spam at some points this will be enough. Wait for a Black puddle. When the Black puddle lands, stand in it, and stack 3 lifeblooms on the maintank. The funny thing is that the healing over time done by lifebloom IS reduced by the black puddle, but the end bloom IS NOT reduced by the black puddle, that still does ~11k non crit on the maintank. This only seems to happen for the maintank.
I was doing some math for this phase:lifebloom costs 744 mana. normally, when u stack 1 lifebloom, and it ends, it gives back ~488 mana. But during this fight, 1 lifebloom only gives back ~244 mana for some reason.
Then, when u stand in a black puddle, the cost of spells is reduced by 70%. That means my lifebloom only costs 223 mana! And still when it blooms, it will give me 244 mana back!
I tried spamming lifeblooms on the entire raid, cause i thought it would give me more mana back then it costs, but this doenst seem to work. I wasnt gaining mana, i was slowly dying on mana. REALLY SLOWLY.
So basically as a resto druid: Hot the tank up with Rejuvenation 100% (be sure to NOT stand in a black puddle) When a black puddle lands, get into the puddle, and hot the tank with 3x lifebloom, you can also spam lifeblooms on raid members who took little dmg from the drain life. Then get out of the puddle, and be ready to cast a regrowth IF the tank gets low. When the lifebloom ends on the maintank, get in the puddle again and stack 3 more. Just repeat and your mana wont be below 80% when the add spawns.

Here's a really great tip:
Since healers don't get much benefit out of the shadow crashes, and you won't be dropping any saronite vapers, have as many of them stand in melee range as possible. That way they don't have to worry about shadow crashes while they are trying to keep the tank up without overhealing.
Do note though that if you have less than 3 people outside of Vezax's melee range, he'll start shadow crashing the melee (We learned that the hard way).
We had only 2 ranged DPS, so we had both of them stay at range along with our Discipline Priest, since he got benefit from the shadow crashes by using Power Word: Shield while inside of them.

Vezax won't cast Searing Flames while the Animus is up. He will in fact cancel a current cast when it spawns and he gets the immunity bubble (although you should probably still try to be interrupting, just in case of lag or something). We were trying this last night, and no one really knew if he kept casting it, so on our first attempt they had me stay on Vezax, which was a waste of time.
The first part of the fight (up to the Animus) can be solo healed, and sort of needs to be if you're going to have the mana to heal two tanks and the raid during Profound Darkness spam. We had a holy pally, and a resto druid just meleeing Vezax up until then, and only healing on Omen of Clarity procs. Seemed to work fine once the pally, who had never been there before, got the hang of how much damage Vezax was doing.

Some tips for tanks.
Saronite Animus allways spawn on same place, its on ground where General Vezax stand before pull. I recommend you to body pull General, no charge, spells or any other ability, General have very small agro range like 10-15yards max, just walk there and turn him left or right. That way healers will see you and your ranged dps will see General and you will have range for Saronite Animus when he will spawn.
Also Saronite Animus is not tauntable on 10man, if you dont have any missdirection (rogue, hunter) as tank you have to aggro him your self. I recommend you to make target macro, General alone is quite big and you might have problem to click on Saronite Animus.
/target Saronite Animus
/startattack
/cast Shield Slam (or any other high aggro spell, depends on your class)
Saronite Animus spawns 4 minutes after you pull General Vezax and he allways use his enrage ability Surge of Darkness, since he do thats every minute, bad thing is that you will have to tank enraged General and Saronite Animus together, so think about that before pull, Shield wall, Palla wall, Bear Wall, Pain Suppression spells like that are best on this :)
If you are raid leader or if someone else is raid leader, make sure you or he have General Vezax in /focus target and download latest DBM or Bigwigs (im not quite sure about Bigwigs, but DBM had some problems with shadow clash raid warning when noone have General Vezax in target after Saronite Animus spawn :) or promote some healers, they shoud not have problems with targeting General Vezax entire fight.
Hopefully this helps, GL.

This fight can be slightly random when it comes to Surge of Darkness & Animus. When Animus spawns, Vezax gains almost-immunity bubble. Tthe act of gaining that bubble also cancels any cast he might be already performing. Good thing is that most of the time he will start casting Surge of Darkness just before Animus' spawn and then get it cancelled due to bubble. This happened to us approx. at 60-70% of our tries. You can be unlucky though, and have Vezax get the bubble before casts Surge - in that case you must live through it, unfortunately, or try again in hope for better RNG luck.

My 10man pug group completed this recently and thought I'd give a different take on the fight since we used only 2 healers and 1 tank where most it seems use 3 healers. Also that we dont have much 25 man Ulduar gear but quite a bit of other hard mode loot from 10man and some 25 man Ulduar items from the first 5-6 bosses. Basically my point is you dont have to be amazingly geared to do this with just 2 healers. We also us are very melee heavy which usually isnt the case with general groups, but I would suggest it since it seems to make things very very easy.
Group Makeup:
Feral Druid (Tank)
Resto Druid (Healer)
Resto Shaman (Healer)
Retribution Paladin
Retribution Paladin
Combat Rogue (kicking Searing Flames)
Fury Warrior
Enhancement Shaman
Survival Hunter
Shadow Priest
Strategy:
We had our druid tank charge in from the right side so that vezax was tanked where he starts since the Animus spawns directly in front of his starting location.
Resto shaman (myself) stood in a shadow crash whenever I needed to refresh Earth Shied, the reason for this is that your healing doesnt suffer but you get the 70% mana reduction from the shadow crash which makes earth shield about a 200 mana cast. Lesser healing wave when absolutely necessary (mostly during surges)
Resto druid stood on the melee and melee'd the boss for omen of clarity procs the entire fight, when he got the proc he used his best HoT on the tank. Also using some mana here and there during the surges. Between earth shield and his 1 single hot the tank was just fine mainly and since there isnt much feral tank gear in ulduar 10 our tank wasnt much more than 25naxx geared with full tier 8.0 and XT hard mode bracers.
Surge of Darkness
We had the ret paladins on a rotation when putting cooldowns on the druid tank during each surge with the druid popping barkskin on 1 trinket on each one. One ret pally took the 1st and 3rd surge, Other one took the 2nd and 4th (note: the 4th surge is when the animus comes out). On the fifth surge the Animus had about 20% hp left and we had our druid tank pop survival instincts, trinkets, frenzied regen, basically everything(note: I'm not 100% sure the surge even got cast with the immunity bubble since he refuses to cast searing flames while immune)
Saronite Animus:
The Animus has really weird aggro at the start, he becomes targetable but cannot be attacked for 2-3 seconds and is immune to growl/taunt. So MD's / Tricks of the Trade are very helpful here. Our druid healer bit the dust a few times by pre-hotting our tank for the 2nd phase.
Shadow Pots:
While we had them, we didnt use them much at all. With 7 dps you can burn the animus down in less than a minute with Heroism/Bloodlust. Our ranged dps and healers/tank used them while our melee dps popped potions of speed (they used 2 actually, one right before the pull which didnt count as in combat and another one during heroism)
After Animus dies its back to phase 1 , use Lay on Hands and whatever you have to keep your tank alive for the remainder of General health (we were at 8% when he went immune) Me and the resto druid were out of mana at the end.
Hope this helps anybody trying to do this, took us about 2 hrs and 5-6 attempts to down it , this was our first night working on it.

What I do as a Discipline Priest:
I solo heal Phase 1 of this fight. Standing out with the ranged, I hop into Shadow Crashes to shield the tank. I then hop out to heal him. As long as you time all of your Penance ticks correctly, you can heal the tank easily without causing overhealing/wasting mana. The only other heal I use besides Penance is an occasional Renew+Inner Focus, or Gift of the Naruu whenever it is up (as I am a draenei). The occasional Flash Heal does not hurt either. It seems like a daunting task, but can be done easily as long as you don't heal reactively and only use Penance when all the ticks go to good use.
By the time Phase 2 begins, I am usually between 10-20% mana. This is enough to get me through the rest of the fight. The other healers should be at full mana, and capable of healing any incoming damage as long as your DPS is good and kills the Saronite Animus promptly. What I do during Phase 2 is stand in every Shadow Crash, spam shielding the raid. This reduces the healing burden of the other healers, and chips away at your remaining mana very slowly.

As of Patch 3.2, the Saronite Animus spawns after 3 minutes instead of 4 or whatever it was before.

So I tried to get this achievement with a group, but for some reason the Animus wouldn't spawn. Thinking it was bugged, I sent a ticket in, and a GM said that the Animus now spawns after 8 Saronite Vapors.

As of Cata, this achievement is still difficult.
A full raid of 85s wiped dozens of times as we struggled to cope with the damage and no mana.
Eventually, we had to DPS the boss down to around 10% and then stop. The tanks didn't die if we interupted the flame AoE which hurts a lot.
Very difficult achievement.
The saronite animus is untauntable, and our OT had to really get him, because ranged DPS standing in the black puddles were godly (40k noncrit soul fire 1.5 second cast).
This and Yogg-Saron with 1 keeper are probably the hardest ones in the Glory of the Uld raider.
Being level 85 does not guarentee success.

Soloed as an Affli Warlock with Voidlord.
Talents:
Dark Regeneration, Mortal Coil, Dark Bargain, Burning Rush, Grimoire of Supremacy, Kil'jaeden's Cunning
Glyphs:
Demon Training, Siphon Life, Soul Shards
Tactic:
In this fight you will not be able to regenerate mana. To activate Hard Mode you have to wait until Saronite Animus appears (about 3 minutes). During this time, you can not destroy any Saronite Vapor. Try to avoid Shadow Crashes. Put DoTs on Vezax only when you are standing in a dark puddle forming on impact of Shadow Crash, because it increases magical damage dealt by 100%. Don't extend the duration of DoTs - don't hurry, you have plenty of time. Be careful not to kill Vezax too early! Voidlord should be healed only when you're not standing in a dark puddle, because it reduces healing done by 75%. When the Boss will have a little HP, turn off Voidlord's auto Void Shield, set him to passive and command him to stand in place (must be facing the Boss and stop attacking him). Now stay alive until Saronite Animus appears. When Vezax starts to cast Surge of Darkness (occurs every minute), you must immediately command your minion to follow you and start to kite. The appearance of Saronite Animus and Surge of Darkness occurs at the same time - this is the most difficult moment in the fight. Before this happens, Vezax should not stand in the middle of the room. Kill Saronite Animus (don't forget to use a dark puddle) and then kill General Vezax. Good Luck and Have Fun!

For druids, the key is spending a lot of time in bear form. Frenzied Regen made the fight all but laughably easy for a 500-ilevel moonkin. Burn the General to about 30 percent, hop in bearform and deeps slowly while self-healing w/o mana. When the add pops, blow cd's and coast through.

Bugged again 12/05/2013
I read some of the comments from awhile back where the animus wouldnt spawn, and tonight after well over 10+ live vapors floating around (none were killed) the animus still wouldnt spawn. Tried waiting longer, tried self-healing through the damage, tried killing a few, etc, but it refused to spawn.
I've done the achievement / hard-mode years ago and a few times recently but was helping out a friend, so I know i was doing it 100% correct; its bugged from how it typically works, although it doesn't seem to happen for everyone.

This seems to be working correctly now, although it does take quite a while for the Dark Animus to spawn. As an Arms warrior, I had to stop DPS on the boss and meditate on the profound nature of the wall for some time before the animus spawned. Other than the awkward silence as you run out of conversation with the boss, there isn't much to worry about here.

The comments here are pretty useless.
To do this achievement you need to tank the boss and WAIT for enough Vapors to spawn. He will then suck up the vapors and spawn the animus. Kill it, then kill him. Done.

Be aware that its the first 6 saronite vapors that you have to let merge. We accidently killed the first 2 and let 6 more spawn which did not merge. also no more spawn after that. we let boss hit enrage and wiped it up.
Completed the achievement by letting the first 6 merge without fault.

I have just done this on 10-man in November 2015. After the 5th vapor spawned they all came together and formed the Saronite Animus.

Just did this on 110 ret paladin:
1. Aggro General Vezax.
2. Wait a few minutes for him to spawn 6 Saronite Vapors. Don't hit or kill anything - just stand there while he knocks you around the room and does almost no damage to you.
3. Once all 6 Saronite Vapors have spawned, they will come together and make a Saronite Animus.
4. Single-target attack and kill the Saronite Animus. If, like with me, Vezax keeps getting in the way and you can’t click to target it, you can use tab targeting or simply use "/tar Saronite Animus".
5. Once the Saronite Animus is dead, kill General Vezax. Done.
