On my third day of farming, unable to win 30- something level XD god help me and help others who can't seem to win too

I grinded this for several days. My (probably going to be only) win consisted of these abilities (I can't remember all of the exact names):
1) Uncommon Fire Whirl
2) Epic Rime
3) Common Repel
4) Epic (Fade to Shadow I think? The one that ports and stealths you)
5) The boat shield
5) Grinded to level 8
6) As the end neared, hid in a house and let the others players kill each other until the storm was consuming it
I had done these things before, many times, and couldn't push beyond 2nd place. The key factor in my victory:
**When there's nowhere else to go and it's just you and a couple others, target/kill the STRONGEST player before it's just you and them!** On all of my prior defeats, I kept killing the weakest of the remaining ones, leaving me stuck with a level 10 player and ending in 2nd place over and over again. This time, when it was down to three of us, I focused on the level 10 (and so did the other player who was level 7) until they were dead, then I finished off the level 7 player (who put up one heck of a fight to the end). When all was done, I had 7% health and a Feat of Strength.
Good luck to all of those vying for this achievement and remember to stay focused and play smart!

According to
this Wowhead article
the only lasting reward for winning is a
feat of strength.
There is no title, transmog, or anything special unlocked for winning. Just feeling good in the moment.
In your next Plunderstorm match you will be dressed differently in a tabard and eye patch but only for that match. At Renown 38 and 40 you will unlock these items permanently but it has nothing to do with being #1 in Plunderstorm.

Since this achievement can be quite hard to get and many people reach level 40 renown before getting a win, i will share some tactics that i used to get my win. I am new to WoW, so i am sorry if i use the wrong terms and my explanation is hard to understand.
This achievement is likely obtainable for a limited time (a few weeks until Dragonflight Season 4 starts i think), but it is possible that it will return in the future.
Tip 1: Play Duos to get more plunder and have a higher chance of winning (fewer teams, assuming everyone has the same skill level there is a 1/30 chance of winning instead of 1/60).
Tip 2: Engage in every Battle unless the enemy players are 2+ levels higher than you are AND at full health, while some Battle Royales allow you to hide until the last deathmatch, this tactic is very unlikely to work in Plunderstorm. The winning team/players in the deathmatch are almost always level 10 and at minimum level 9. If you are not atleast level 8 when there are 3 squads left, you are probably not going to win unless you get very lucky.
Tip 3: Do not play at unusual playing hours like midnight or at a time when casual players might be at work/school. If you play a match at 4 in the morning on a monday, you are going to encounter much more hardcore players than if you play in the early evening on a wednesday, friday, saturday or sunday.
Tip 4: Party with the same person if you can. It does not have to be a person you already know, but if you queue up with a random player and they are of an average or good skill level send them a battle.net friend request by right clicking their player icon in the top left. It is about a 50% chance that they accept your friend request, but if they do you will have a more consistent chance of winning compared to queueing with randoms who are often very unreliable or only collecting plunder for cosmetics.
Tip 5: If possible, try to collect ground plunder and ability upgraders after enemy players die even if you are still fighting. Levels are very important and in many battles both players will run away from each other for a few seconds to heal. So if you have a chance to become one level higher than your opponent your chance of winning the battle increases by like 15-20% VS if they collect the plunder and level up from it.
Tip 6: Do not fight 1v1, but only fight 2v1. When you encounter an enemy team, do not split and fight 2 1v1 battles, instead both of you should only target the enemy player with the lowest health so you fight 2x 2v1 battles instead.
Tip 7: When farming mobs, do not fight the same PVE enemies concurrently. Stay within a distance of 10 seconds walk time of each other, but do not fight the same enemies as this is slower than fighting the mobs separately.
Tip 8: Try to use quick cast, easy to hit abilities instead of slower cast or slow moving abilities. You will likely not be able to use the vortex or mana sphere on an enemy player in the last battles of the match. My favorite loadout is the fire sword slam as my first ability and the shield throw as the second with purple shield and tornado or energy barrier as utility items. But use whatever abilities you are good with. Since Blizzard is still nerfing and buffing the abilities the meta can change. Also you should probably not have any movement items when it comes to the final battle(s) as these are not that useful and trying to outrun an enemy player is not really worth it since it means your damage output is lower and they will likely be able to get some hits in while you are trying to get away from them anyway.
Tip 9: When attacked by 2 players at once spam the g button to ping your location while running towards your teammate to alert them. If you see an enemy team ping one of the players to alert your teammate that you will attack them.
Tip 10: Watch your surroundings to prevent getting 3rd partied before you attack another team.
Tip 11: If you are very close to leveling up, try to defeat mobs to reach the next level BEFORE attacking an enemy team.
Bad abilities for endgame in my opinion: poisoned mackerel smack, mana sphere, vortex pull, freeze aura, movement abilities (ground spike is also kind of bad in the endgame, but not as bad as the previous ones in my opinion). If you have one of these in the endgame, try to switch them for a damage dealing ability even if the damage ability is at a lower level. Traps are okay, but not preferable.

i am terrible at pvp and terrible at plunderstorm (i usually die in the first 20 kills) but i managed to place 1st twice - and honestly, both times were just extra lucky

I now have 115 wins across duos and solos, here is what I have found so far: EU Account
>Duos are harder than solos as the calibre of people is higher, so if you don't like the gamemode or are finding yourself struggle to place top 5 focus on solos.
>Don't play random duos, only queue with someone you know and preferably on discord or voice comms in general.
>If playing Duos you will need to start to play a bit more strategically as there are more "tryhards" - you will get one shot by another team every so often (P1 Chains, P2 Snowdift, p1 Starbomb, p2 starbomb - Unless you have an escape or immune you will die).
>If playing duos make sure you have an escape or immune.
>I would highly recommend not looking at what is the best skill to pick up, just play a few rounds, see what fits your personal playstyle and then keep practising. I personally don't like fire whirl as it doesn't suit my playstyle of poking or bonking with searing axe.
>If you are not good at the gamemode, and don't want to improve, then I would suggest playing very passive, have double escape abilities (so shroud and night fae for example, quaking leap also works) if you can get to the final 2 with goblin rockets, then make them use their movement/escapes/immunes, and then apply it, and you should have an easy kill.
>The level discrepancy is massive thing, don't forget your "R" attack as it can rack up an easy 30+ damage in a matter of seconds.
>And most importantly never stop farming (until lvl 10) if you have to chase an enemy and you are not lvl 10, then stop and go off and farm, you can keep poking so it looks like you might attack at any point to keep them away from you.

Honestly getting this achievement comes down to luck IMO. I got a bunch of wins during my grind to renowned 40 and all of them were extremely lucky wins that I would have never expected to get!
When I say lucky, I mean winning although being lower level and beating level 10 that weren't good or simply having bad powers but still somehow managed to win or reach level 10 and beat everyone and find out that the last opponent that survived were level 5 that hugged the wall and were easy to finish off.
Most of my wins were in duos. The craziest win was in a duo that I soloed without a partner from the start to finish. No idea how I managed that but yeah I soloed a duo where no one joined with me.
Wins were definitely easier to get in duo and all my wins I ended up landing at the same spot every time. (Near the Wetland bridge).
Here's a few tips that works for me.
- When you start, always land on an elite mob and try to land a little later so no one drops on you.
- Don't try to land on players, It's just a bad idea.
- Don't waste time on players until you have good powers and at least reach lvl 7. If they are 2 levels below or have no choice to fight them (no way to escape) then go ahead.
- Focus elites.
- If you can, the best spot to drop is near the bridge to Wetlands then go down the road and clear the necromancers or whatever they are. Then go towards the keep and grab the bears and hippogryph and moonkins along the way. This route usually has alot of chests too.
- Always keep your health maxed. Too many times I've seen people in duos that are not healing themselves. You should keep your health maxed at all time even if there's no enemy players close by or if you're only missing a few HP. Use that CD!
- If you see a group of people fighting and they are the same level or below, wait until you see them reach low health and jump in for the kills and retreat. NEVER go into player combat without your partner and always stay close unless you absolutely have to bail away to survive!
- Avoid players as much as possible and maximize XP farming.
- Never go in the middle of the map unless you see elites and no one is around. Kill elites and go back closer to the wall.
- Pay attention to the wall closing in. Alot of players get caught behind and die...
- Use Pings! They're really helpful!
- Don't forget you can communicate with your partner before and during the battle. This helps if you want to give tips or specific information before the battle starts.
- In duos, you can resurrect your partner! Alot of people are not aware of this.
As for powers I usually go for
1.Mana sphere
2.Holy shield
3.Windstorm
4.Fade to shadow.
This is my favorite build.
If I want to go full Melee offensive I usually go for 1.Slicing wind
2.Searing axe / Toxic Smackerel
3.Hunter's chain
4.Snowdrift.
This build has been pretty good to me but the lack of defensive and escape powers can be a big disadvantage for some.
Now everyone plays differently so what works for me may not work for you but this way always get me somewhere under 8th place and it's pretty much how I got all my victories. Also RNG may not always be on your side, so you can't always get the powers you want.
So honestly just keep grinding and eventually you'll get a win and it will probably feel like it was a super easy one!
One last thing... If you're a keyboard turner, all of the above won't matter and you're probably better just sticking to solo and cross your fingers for a miracle.

Just got my first win, only 2k exp, so if you win you will gain way less exp than getting lvl7-8 and die two times. Winning takes a lot of time and if the remaining pirates have counters to your skills, you just wasted your time (like you are in full meele and they have anti-dmg shield). So if you are solo farm exp and try to win on duo or trio mode.

Did that today in trios. Honestly don't know what advice to give - a good teamplay will surely make this achievement much easier.
Don't separate, focus enemies one by one. Earthquake, Fire Whirl and that spell that does a void explosion that sucks enemies to the centre are the best kinds of spells with a huge nuking and control potential. At least that's how i've won.

Earthquake or any other area of effect explosion + fire whirl combined with the stealth utility will get you there. Use your spells and vanish, heal, rinse and repeat. Also a huge combo boost is the shoot forward gust of wind that stuns enemies for a few seconds. Use this to secure earthquake hit, when enemy tries to run away fire whirl asap and stick on him like glue. If things go south, vanish and heal yourself. Let others fight each other and jump in when you ready to wipe them all out.
This mode needs luck and good timing to fight or run away and this is all you need to get a win for the FOS like I did.
