Lots of quests, many of them are chains. The quests tab on this page does not yet include a filtering ability, but if you Browse > Kalimdor > Desolace you can filter there.

This is a great zone for 29-36. Not usually too crowded and the quests are pretty good. After those levels you might wanna move to the Badlands (Alliance).

the best way in my opinion is to go to stone talon mountains. Sun rock retreat if horde. then head into the charred vale, which is up a long steep ramp.
Once in the charred vale follow the mountains to your left (if looking from the path into the charred vale) keep following it until you get to a pathway, it heads away from the charred vale. If you look at the map above, see the path to the very far north, well that path leads from the charred vale.
Hope this helps.

If you are playing a pvp server but want to avoid meaningless and constant pvp it would not be recommended to come here.A good place to lvl however.

Very good zone to level in on a PVP server (horde side especially). Quests are all easily doable in the mid 30's, but the travel times can be a PITA and the underwater quests are always annoying. Beware of level 50ish players entering valley of spears on their way to Maraudon.

The name is either a play on the word desolate ("lifeless"), a portmonteau of desolate and solace ("rest"), or "de"solace ("no rest").

For anyone having a hard time locating the flight path it is located at 64, 10 in Nigel Point. It's difficult to notice since it's off a beaten path on the border of town, I completely missed it my first time through.

the town here is located at (24,70), shadowprey village its around the bottomleft of the map where that little tail is you'll find the flightmaster there too. There are many quests in town but also check out Ghost Walker Post where theres a small outpost with a few other quests, its located at (55,56) above kodo graveyard, where the spirit rezzer is.
The only instance here is Maraudon its located at (29,63) above shadowprey village, right when you come out you should see a path going to mara on your left:

Legends claim that the centaur are descendants of a dark union between one of the demigod Cenarius's sons and a princess of the chaotic earth elementals. When the first khans were born of their union, it is said that they murdered their father, for shame of their misshapen appearance. They were born filled with rage and savagery and have not calmed in the centuries that followed. The first of their kind, the first khans, gave rise to the five tribes of the centaur. The race swept across Desolace and soon became legendary for its brutality. The diligent night elves held them in check for ages until the Burning Legion rained its destruction upon the world. The night elves left the centaur out of necessity for their own survival during the wars, allowing the twisted race to assume control of Desolace. Though fortunate enough not to be scorched into oblivion in the demon wars, Desolace was savaged nonetheless due to the centaur's ceaseless aggression. No longer threatened by night elves, the tribes plagued other plains races - chiefly, the peaceful tauren. This struggle endured for generations, until recently, when the tauren were at last driven from Desolace. The centaur were never content with controlling Desolace and have followed their tribal khans in a series of clashes with other races throughout southern and central Kalimdor.
The mountainous barriers of the Stonetalons lie to the north and the Thousand Needles to the southeast, isolating Desolace from much of the rest of Kalimdor. The grasslands and mesas of Mulgore stand directly east, and the land runs rugged and open to the storm-tossed coast to the west. The winds create waterspouts against the lowland hills along the shore. The western coastline of Desolace is lush in sad contrast to the wasteland of its interior. Desolace is a gray, rocky wasteland littered with bones. It seems almost under a supernatural curse, its skies always black and stormy, with lightning and high winds a constant throughout the realm. The surrounding mountains form a significant barrier to travel, a key reason why the centaur have never established more than a sporadic presence elsewhere on Kalimdor. Five barbarous centaur tribes dominate the entire region with the strength of overwhelming numbers and unequaled ferocity. Each tribe is led by one of the dreaded khans and is known by a distinctive tribal color - Black, Brown, Green, Red, and Yellow. Members use the color to mark their weapons and their faces. The khans who lead each tribe rarely have contact with each other except in times of war. There were no other cultures of any note in all of Desolace. The centaur had run them all down in their unceasing lust for conquest. The only animals that can sustain themselves in the arid and violent land are beasts such as lions, raptors, sand serpents, and harpies.
In recent times Horde and Alliance have set up outposts in the desolate land, and only four of the five tribes control Desolace.
Desolace is home to several characters of note. At Ghost Walker Post, Maurin Bonesplitter and Takata Steelblade seek aid in the battle against the Burning Blade. In Shadowprey Village, Taiga Wisemane attempts to cleanse the demonic taint that the Burning Legion has brought with it. And at Nijel's Point, Kreldig Ungor sends bold adventurers to the wide corners of the land in search of mystical items and treasure. In addition, Rexxar used to wander these lands with his bear companion Misha until the Dark Portal reopened.

If you're alliance, the best is way is to fly to astranaar, then go to this cave:

Then go south to the path, north untill it forks west into desolace.

I found this to be the best place to level up from lv32 to lv43, it was also a great place to get big $$$ because if you set your faction's village on your hearth, then go south of Shadowprey (this can be done by alliance) and go into the water, you will find Drysnap Crawlers, they give a fair amount of XP to lv32-36, and you will also find Shellfish traps there. You can easily sell everything in the traps for large ammounts of money.
1: Green Names= 5-10g
2: Big Iron Fishing Pole= 150-350g (pending on what server you're on and what faction you're in, horde=lower price, alliance=this price+)
3: Dump the Grey names right then and there, because they don't make any money from the AH
4: Shellfish=5-10g a full stack (full stacks are 20) These must be sold on either the Neutral AH or the Horde AH as horde are the only faction that can make use of these.
5: Shiny Fish Scales: 20-50s on any AH, a lot of Shamans need Shiny Fish Scales until they get a minor glyph to eliminate that use.
6: Ocasionally you will get gems from the Drysnaps, sell these for whatever you see them for on the AH
For lv37-43, just grind Ancient Kodos in the Kodo Graveyard.

Bad place to level (atleast for the horde). It's kinda "dead" there, it's a wasteland of nothing interesting. The quests are annoying, the mobs do have a big aggro range etc. Too much alliances here as well ;)
I reccomend going to STV / Shimmering flats / Athari highlands

Desolace is a great place for Rogues to level up their lock-picking to 225. I came to the Ethel Rethor area as a level 45 troll with some Elixirs of Water Breathing. My skill was 195 when I started and I ended up maxing it for my level in just enough time to do it with only 1 of my elixirs. The nagas around there were no challenge at all.

If you're Horde, here are some easy to miss quests :
Don't forget to pick up
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/object=177787
Rackmore's log quest, while you're doing the quest: Other Fish to Fry. (Naga near Ranazjar Island). The book is along the coast nearby at 36, 30
Another easy-to-miss quest NPC is nearby at 38,27 (the big tower near the ocean):
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/npc=11863
and worth doing around the same time, since the second step in his quest chain takes you to ranazjar Island again.
Be sure to loot burning blade humanoids when you cross paths. They drop
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/item=20310
Which starts a quest chain.
Be sure to help the traveling caravan when they begin traveling. You can get a quest at both ends (two different quests) for guarding them on the way each direction.
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=5943
When they reach their destinations on each end, a robot will spawn that you can buy items from. Theres some good uncommon recipes for cooking which can earn you a bit of gold on the AH. People are often looking for these for cooking achievements.
After you pick up the quests from Ghost Walker post be sure to visit the opposite side of the Kodo graveyard (47,61). This fellow is easy to miss and has the quest:
https://www.wowhead.com/wotlk/quest=6134
His sister also could use some help, over in the Valley of Spears (Escort quest):

This must be the most untouched area in the game.
It's so depressing, the sky is grey, the MAP is grey, and you get to see kodos "die" in the graveyard. There are wandering ghost kodos.
A more appropiate name for this place would be "Depressolace" or something.
It's just...unappealing.
STV is much more lively, and has a raid.
If it were not for Maraudon, this place would be..desolate.

If you're looking for quests to do for the Loremaster achievement, note that you can do both Centaur quest lines. After doing one, you need to kill centaur to get your rep back up with the other clan. I would definitely not suggest doing this if you're leveling, but at level 80 it took me about 45 minutes total to get my rep back up from hostile to friendly.
If you're going to do this, do the Gelkis quests first. The reason for this is that the Gelkis are much less spread out around their area, which means grinding them to get rep back up with the other clan will be quicker. Don't forget to go into the cave (marked on the map), as there are a whole lot more centaur inside.

Apparently, with the "Cataclysm" expansion, as most areas will be reworked, so will Desolace. According to the trailer, it will now have life, and it won't be so depressing. It will look much more like a jungle (think Stranglethorn).

It's not the funnest zone to level 30-40, but it's pretty relaxed. You might see ONE player in all your time there, but even that's just a maybe. The instance is terrible lol, but the loot isn't bad. Quests are alright, nothing special. Unlike mentioned above, Herbalists WILL find a bit of Stranglekelp in the waters.
Have fun, everyone!

While this place is dead and forgotten, the catacalysm trailer showed us that desolace will be an open grassy area, new life will be growing
personally I liked the fact that there was a place noone liked, since it will be some sort of mystery
For the Achievement: "to honor one's elder" I run with my 80 through mauradon to find the elder, and I was stunnned what a beautiful instace it is. If you are there, I recommend you to stand still once in a while, and look around you(espaccialy the last part)..I recommand that also for some other dungeons
then I fell of a stupid bridge, and I was lost...
Beatiful...but a pain in the ass, since it's like a 3hr run if you want to do all of it

I must say, there's an interesting cold war going on in Desolace at the moment on my server at least.
It seems as though both factions come there mainly to quest and grind their way through the thirties, so as a result they'd rather go about their business than fight whomever they meet from the opposite faction even if compatible, level-wise. Often have Horde members run or rode right past me, sometimes waving a silent greeting on the way, but those that are on my level or lower carefully tip-toe around me making sure to face me so they can keep an eye on me to make sure I'm not gonna start any funny business. Hence the term "cold war". :)
Naturally, there is the occasional ganker or person on-level that feels like fighting, but it's remarkably rare.
Is anyone noting the same tendencies on other servers, I wonder? (Mine is Shattered Hand, Europe)

I'm an Elf-Druid and I like exploring in Horde territory. Sometimes I'll run into a Tauren or Troll (rarely an Undead in Kalimdor) and I'm not really sure what to do. It might be interesting to fight but on the other hand Tauren and Elves actually have a lot in common. And I'm afraid it might be bad manners to pick a fight. I think of it like English and German soldiers in WWI meeting in no man's land and playing cards then going back to their lines and shooting at each other.

Nijel's Point. 68, 17. For the Cosmosers.
FP for horde is Shadowprey, off the West coast. FP for alliance is Nijel's, and to get to the guy, you:
run up the ramp and look straight at the city.. you'll see a moonwell to the right and a little ramp (break in the mnts.) to the left. Take it for the inn and such.

I noticed a trend in Thotbot. Several escorting quests are missing from Thotbot. For example, the Caravan guys give you 2 quests in Desolace.
They ask to be escorted both times. It takes time to start the quest again (like 45 minutes), because the caravan moves slowly and sometimes stops moving for a while.
The first quest is a bit north of Kalkor village, on the road. You must protect the Caravan from centaurs.
Later, when the caravan is returning back north, the caravan needs an escort again in the area with Infernals and Demons.
Anyway, the quest giver yells it in red so you know when its time to do the quest.

Great place if your 30-40, quests are relatively easy as well as the mobs. Not that many horde, at least not on my server, you'll bump into one once in a while, but most of the time they turn the other way, unless they are in groups of two or more, then they'll gang up on you.

From Ashenvale, take the talondeep path (42,72) to Stonetalon Mountains zone. You'll end up in Windshear Crag area. You then need to go to the back of the Charred Vale (30,76) via Sun Rock Retreat for Horde or the path at Mirkfallon Lake for Alliance.
Once in Desolace, Alliance base is Nigel's Point at (64,10) along the north edge past where the road turns south. Look for the Stormwind Guards and head up the hill. FP is to your left further up hill. Horde Base is Shadowprey Village at (22,72). Follow the road to the south-west corner of the map. FP is at the end of the pier, inn is on the hill. Both locations give similar quests. Especially important is the Scarlet Monastary chain quest with Brother Anton on the 2nd floor of the Alliance Inn.
Note that the entrance to Ferala is at (41,92)

I'm a lvl 37 noob (Pally) and have to admit that even after two years of play there is still an aire of neutrality in Desolace. I started exploring Kalimdor because all the good quests were in STV and I was sick of getting ganked by lvl ?'s. Even with guild and pick-up grouping I kept getting nailed.
Desolace is a different beast, though welcome. My guild-mates pretty much stick to the east so there is a feeling of alone that might very well be universal across factions - who knows. I'd love to hear more Horde comments on Desolace.
I ran into a UD rouge getting attacked by a pack of dogs last night and thought to myself that it would make the game very interesting if I could heal Horde while in contested territory. Better yet, it would be even cooler to permanently switch sides, at say lvl 40 or 50.
Another thing I found interesting was the contrivance on the part of Desolace Alliance NPC's in regards to pitting centuars clans against each other, and not trusting the other races - A great intro into the world of factions.
The larger than life Mobs are also a great touch - you just don't see those very often in the East.

Desolace has always been my favorite zone in the Old World. I don't know why. But I guess it makes you feel like you're on your own -- isolated from the world.
The Nijel's Point music really sets the mood for this dead zone with the lime-colored sky.
It's also the very zone that made me wanna roll my Dwarf Hunter, and I'll never forget that.

Just a little tip for those who are trying to find a specific area in a zone(e.g where is <X> camp? where is <Y> retreat? where is the <Z> temple?). Go into the Achievements section and select the Explore <Zone> you need. There are usually maps with all the locations in the zone labelled.
Aaahh Desolace...I lasted 3 and a half quests in there...After the lovely pink/purple forests of Ashenvale and the lush tropical jungle of STV it was depressing, lonely & I couldn't stand it. But of course that's just my opinion. Others may love the dull/deserted feel. If it gets revamped after Cataclysm I'm def going back out of pure curiosity.
