is a Level 105-110 dungeon located in

dungeon from Wrath of the Lich King!). It is available in Normal, Heroic, and Mythic - but not Mythic+ - difficulties. This guide will outline strategies and important role-based responsibilities for each of the 8 possible bosses in Violet Hold, as well as some tips on particularly threatening trash mobs.
The Violet Hold dungeon has unconventional mechanics, so the beginning of this guide will focus on how the dungeon works, before breaking down the trash and boss mechanics. Players who recall the Wrath of the Lich King version of the dungeon should skip directly to encounter information using the Table of Contents links above or the togglers below.

Loot
Loot is ilvl 845 in Normal mode for level 110 players, ilvl 865 on Heroic and ilvl 885 on Mythic.
In addition, all loot in Legion is on an ilvl spectrum. Loot has a base ilvl and a progressively smaller chance to appear as a Warforged version, increasing in intervals of +5 ilvls. The maximum cap at launch is ilvl 850. Learn more about loot in the

Violet Hold: The Basics
Lord Malgath opens a portal to the Twisting NetherIn Violet Hold, players are tasked with preventing the Legion's forces from escaping the prison and entering Dalaran. The Legion attack is led by

The dungeon takes place in a single room as a gauntlet of sorts. Lord Malgath will open a series of portals that allow Legion troops to enter the prison. These troops will attempt to break through the Prison Seal that protects Dalaran from the Violet Hold's prisoners. Players must intercept the troops to prevent the Prison Seal from failing.
Occasionally Lord Malgath will open one of the six prison cells and release a powerful prisoner to serve as a boss fight. Eventually, Malgath will engage the party directly. Once Malgath is defeated, the Invasion Commander will appear to serve as the final boss fight of the instance.
Tracking dungeon progressThe dungeon follows a predictable pattern:

Starting the Dungeon Event
When players first enter Violet Hold, they encounter several friendly prison guard NPCs fighting off trivial Burning Legion troops that continually trickle in from three active portals. This is not part of the dungeon event itself, and killing these demons will not count toward dungeon completion.
The Crystal Defense System in action. Players may use this 4 times during the dungeon.
Players initiate the dungeon sequence by speaking with

, a friendly NPC just inside the entrance. Sinclari will activate the prison's Crystal Defense System, destroying the few hostile NPCs that are fighting the prison guards, and then she and the guards will leave, sealing the prison door behind them.

Portal Spawn Locations by Type
Once the dungeon event has begun, Lord Malgath will float over to one of eight possible portal locations and open a portal. There are two different types of portals:
Persistent portals are guarded by a Portal Keeper or Portal Guardian, and stay open - allowing additional Legion minions to enter the dungeon - until players slay the Keeper or Guardian
Temporary portals open just long enough to deposit an elite Legion squad of troops
The map to the right illustrates which type of portal opens in each of the 8 possible portal locations. Green pins represent the Portal Keeper/Portal Guardian portals, while red pins represent the elite Legion squad portals.
Malgath will open a new portal either after:
Players have slain the Portal Guardian or Keeper, or
Players kill the last mob of an elite Legion squad, or
A set amount of time has passed since he opened the most recent portal.
Players have 2 minutes to defeat a Portal Guardian/Keeper before the next portal opens, or 90 seconds to defeat an elite Legion squad before the next portal is opened.
After five portals have been opened, the next wave will be a boss wave. Malgath will open the boss's prison cell immediately after players have defeated the pre-boss portal, or 2 minutes after he opened the fifth portal, whichever comes first.
After players defeat a boss, Lord Malgath will wait for approximately 40 seconds before opening a new portal. This allows players to eat or drink, heal up, resurrect fallen party members, and inspect loot before continuing to fight.
Recovering from a Wipe
Attempting a prison break!Violet Hold has a unique mechanic in Legion; if players die, they are debuffed with a 15-second

and cannot release spirit or be resurrected (including using a pre-existing

) until this debuff expires. This makes any individual death more likely to result in a wipe, since players cannot respawn and quickly rejoin the battle even during trash.
Unlike other dungeons, trash mobs in Violet Hold will not reset when the party wipes. Any open portals will continue to spawn new minions, and Lord Malgath will stick to the timers listed above, opening new portals as scheduled.
Portal Guardians and Portal Keepers will stay near their portal, even through a wipe. However, the minor minions and elite Legion squads will attack the Prison Seal with

when they are not being attacked.
When players wipe and release spirit, they will respawn on the starting platform, surrounded by enemies that are attacking the Prison Seal. These enemies do not aggro by proximity, so players are safe to run away, sit and eat, and recoup before engaging the mobs. However, casting heals or performing any attack will draw the attention of the trash mobs, so players should wait for the group to be ready before doing any of these things.
Once the party has recouped from the wipe, players should focus on closing any existing portals by killing Portal Guardians/Keepers, then should clean up the elite Legion squad members and other minions attacking the door. Cooldowns such as

may be necessary to get ahead of the portal timers.
If players wipe on a boss fight they may simply re-attempt the boss, just like in any other dungeon.
Failing the Instance
Click to activate the Defense SystemBecause adds keep emerging from Portal Guardian or Portal Keeper portals, even during wipes, and because new portals will continue to spawn, it is possible for parties who fall significantly behind to fail the dungeon entirely. This should be a rare occasion, but may happen if a tank or healer leaves the party mid-dungeon and is not swiftly replaced.
Failure occurs when the Legion troops have completely destroyed the Prison Seal. For this to happen, several trash mobs must be allowed to cast

uncontested for quite a long time. When the Prison Seal is completely broken, Malgath will lead his Legion troops out into Dalaran, and then the dungeon will reset.
Once the dungeon has reset, players may speak to Lieutenant Sinclari again to start over. If the party had already defeated a boss before the instance reset, this boss will be replaced with a placeholder boss that drops no loot, and serves only to move the dungeon events forward.
Crystal Defense System
Scattered around the ground floor of the dungeon are four small crystal sconces that players may use to activate the prison's Defense System. Doing so will cause

to fire from the ceiling and damage all currently active hostile NPCs.
Bosses (and summoned adds in a boss encounter) are immune to the Defense System.
Each Crystal Defense System sconce may only be activated once during the dungeon, so players should choose an appropriate time to use the four crystals. The most popular use of the Defense System is to click one crystal for each of the four waves of trash following the second boss fight.
Notable Trash Mobs
Portal Guardians and Keepers continue to summon adds until killedAll of the trash in Violet Hold spawns from the Legion portals. Recall that there are two types of portals - persistent ones guarded by Portal Guardians/Keepers, and temporary ones that create elite Legion squads.
The most dangerous portals are the persistent portals. Approximately 15 seconds after a persistent portal is created, it will spawn a Portal Guardian or Portal Keeper. There are four types, and it is random which type will emerge from the portal:

Each of these demons has unique, threatening mechanics that players must react to properly.
Portal Guardian - Inquisitor
The Inquisitor-type

can deal very heavy party damage, and moderate tank damage. The main attack the Inquisitor uses on the tank is

. This spell is interruptible, but players should save interrupts for more important abilities.
Interrupt Shield of EyesWhile fighting the Inquisitor, players must keep an eye out for

Portal Guardian - Jailer

The graphic is very subtle, especially if the Felguard is tanked on top of its portal
Players must move out of the Fel Axe's area of effect quickly so the healer does not fall behind
Tanks should watch carefully for this mechanic and drag the Felguard away so that melee DPS do not have to stand in the Fel Axe to attack

Minor Legion Minions
These minions emerge from any of the Portal Keeper or Portal Guardian's portals. One minion type is released approximately every 15 seconds. These minions are typically less threatening than the Portal Guardian/Keeper, but if they are not tanked properly or they are not killed, they can overwhelm the party.
Minions are randomly chosen from the following list, and tend to have limited mechanics.

Elite Legion Squad
The elite Legion squads consist of three to four enemies who emerge from the portal and begin to run toward the prison seal. The composition of these elite Legion squads varies based on how far players have progressed through the dungeon.
Until players have defeated the first boss, the elite Legion squads will contain mobs drawn from the following list:

Tank damage is extremely high during the elite Legion squads in this last segment of the dungeon. Use the Crystal Defense System, AoE stuns, and defensive/external tank cooldowns to ensure the party does not wipe.
Violet Hold Prisoners
The first two boss fights of Violet Hold are drawn at random from a pool of six possible bosses, most of whom are tributes to Wrath of the Lich King-era raid bosses.
Anub'esset
Aim Impale away from other players

Frequently, Anub'esset will select a ranged player for

cast, and tanks should use Active Mitigation or defensive cooldowns to reduce the amount of damage taken.
30 seconds into the fight, and again every minute, Anub'esset will cast

Becoming a Vampyr grants the

, players must rush to the top of Violet Hold's balcony and click on the two

objects on either side of the targeted player. This will allow the targeted player to move.
When Betrug completes his

channel, he will resume attacking the party.
Note that

is more dangerous when Betrug is on the top level of the dungeon, because there is less space and it can be difficult to aim the cone away from other players.

Heroic & Mythic Difficulty
Run away with Seeds of DestructionOn Heroic and Mythic difficulties, Fel Lord Betrug will debuff two players with

. This will occur once before the first

, and twice between each subsequent
强力碾压
casts.
毁灭之种
lasts for 8 seconds. When it expires, the affected players will emit 4
毁灭的苏醒
waves. These waves travel in straight lines (more or less - the stairways and balconies of Violet Hold make the waves act strangely on occasion) and will deal extremely high Shadow damage to any player who intersects their path. This removes the
毁灭的苏醒
, but can be fatal, particularly if this occurs shortly after
混沌能量
.
Players affected by
毁灭之种
should move away from one another and try to position themselves so that the
毁灭的苏醒
waves will not strike other players. Other players should watch for incoming
毁灭的苏醒
waves and avoid them.
Sael'orn
Sael'orn is a single-target fight with extremely high movement requirements and the potential for very high party damage.
Face Phase Spiders to prevent their attacks; they will become transparent when neutralized (right)The most dangerous mechanic in the encounter comes from the

s, which are untargetable, unkillable enemies.
Sael'orn will summon a new Phase Spider every 10-15 seconds throughout the fight
Phase Spiders will pick a random player and cast

, which acts like a fixate

target and will deal extremely heavy melee damage when it gets near
To stop the Phase Spider from advancing, turn to face it directly, and remain facing the Phase Spider until the

Players must be mindful of their positioning to allow themselves to face oncoming Phase Spiders while still dealing damage to the boss.
Run away after Web GrabShortly into the fight, and approximately every 30-40 seconds thereafter, Sael'orn will cast

, pulling all players in to her location and dealing minor damage.
This can be particularly dangerous for players who are currently targeted by

poison DoT. The poison does not deal much damage, but can be fatal in combination with

, which deals moderate DoT damage to the affected player. This damage will splash onto nearby players, so the affected target should move away from the rest of the party.
Note that the tank

a valid target for this ability.
Players affected by

should use personal damage-reduction cooldowns when possible.

So anyone know what's up with the trapdoor in Violet Hold? You can see under the floor is clearly a cave/path with maybe a box?

Not sure if other people are seeing this happen but multiple times last night there was no bite bar that showed up on (Mythic) Blood-Princess Thal'ena. Made the fight a little more difficult. It did show up for all players after a few wipes and reentering the dungeon but not during the actual boss fight.

I am trying to solo this dungeon but I keep getting Fel Lord Betrig -- THERE IS NO WAY to break out of his final death grip UNLESS IN A GROUP. I've done this so many times I'm frustrated trying to get the other boss. IS THERE ANY WAY to solo this dungeon?
