Artifact Weapons offer many gameplay benefits, which you can read about in-depth in the
Guide to Artifact Weapons
or bite-sized in
Artifact Basics: Acquiring and Enhancing Your Weapon
. However, there is also a vibrant transmog component to the Artifact Weapon as well! There are 24 appearances associated with each Artifact Weapon, this guide covers how to unlock each style and how difficult and time-consuming each one is.
Each
Artifact Weapon Guide
includes pictures of each appearance and the weapons can be previewed in the modelviewer in the
Artifact Calculator
.
Note:
Starting in Shadowlands Prepatch (Patch 9.0), your first artifact may be acquired at level 10.
Unlocking Basics
Most tint unlocks require level 45 but several can be done while leveling.
Once a new appearance or tint is unlocked, it is available to be used at the Artifact Forge in your Class Order Hall.
Other weapon appearances can be transmogged over your artifact weapon. This follows all pre-existing rules with regards to weapon types, etc.
Certain weapon appearances change the type of a weapon (e.g. the Titan's Reach Hidden Artifact appearance for
泰坦之击
changes it from a Gun to a Bow)
All skins and appearances that you unlock are unlocked for ALL specs on your character. In Battle for Azeroth, unlocking a skin or appearance on a character will make it usable by other characters of the same class and specialization.
In Battle for Azeroth, you can transmog to your artifact weapon, regardless of weapon type, if you are the correct spec. For example, a Holy Paladin using a sword and shield can transmog to the 2H Mace artifact. You will also be able to transmog to the
Druid Artifact Forms
.

Acquisition
: You must clear a Level 15 Mythic+ Dungeon, either using your keystone or another player's keystone. This is a very challenging difficulty as mobs will hit for much harder and have a set of nasty affixes on top of their regular abilities. This will be obtainable through Battle for Azeroth Mythic dungeons.
Difficulty
: This tint will be very difficult to acquire, as it requires clearing a challenging dungeon at max level.
Tint 4
Requirement
: Earn the achievement
军团英雄的荣耀

: This meta requires that you complete 26 achievements in the 10 Legion 5-man dungeons on
Mythic
difficulty. Account-wide achievement. Learn how to get all of the achievements in the
Glory of the Legion Hero

Difficulty
: Medium-Hard, as this will require a concentrated, coordinated effort between you and your dungeon group. Most of the achievements are simple but some are harder than others and you'll have to rely on the skill of your group mates to get this one done. Mythic dungeons require premade groups so it will take some effort to plan as well.

Tint 4
Requirement
: Have the challenge appearance unlocked. The requirements were significantly loosened in Patch 7.3--you no longer need the hidden appearance equipped while completing a specific activity.

> unlocking a skin or appearance on one character will not unlock it account-wide – you must separately unlock it on other characters.
I just wonder if I should earn all the achievments on EVERY character that I want to have the skins unlocked by those achievs?
For example, should I have an archaeology on my alts, and make that 16-week achievment (
此面向上
) for two/five/ten times to unlock the artifact appearance for them? If yes, that's still okay comparing to the fact I need to complete the
军团英雄的荣耀
for every alt to get the skin O_o

As for the PVP appearances, wouldn't "Can't be unlocked until season X" work better? IIRC they're not restricted to their season.

PositveRoleModel
You don't need to be 110 to start unlocking additional appearances. Tint 3 of the Classic Appearance can be unlocked at 102 and Tint 4 can also be unlocked not long after as well. I was able to obtain both of those tints by level 105.

Regarding Upgraded Tint 3:
Acquisition: This requires you to complete the two quests that set-up research Work Orders for Artifact Knowledge. Only available at level 110. Hidden History - requires that you recover 4 tomes of lore for your Artifact Weapon that are scattered around Azeroth and then Speaking to the Wind ( Shaman) or Hitting the Books (All other classes) - requires you to place a Research Work Order.
Difficulty: Easy, requires questing.
Are we sure about this? Based on the description for
见证历史
and the fact that it follows
神器还是神话
seems to suggest that you have to research level 25 artifact knowledge to earn this achievement.

Helpful guide thanks. Some of the acquisition have changed since beta. It would be helpful if the amount of time required was also put next to difficulty. Only 2 of the 16 are in any way "difficult" all the others take various degrees of real world time and repetitive effort. Thanks for taking the time to write this!

For those looking to track their progress towards tints 2, 3, and 4 of their hidden skin...
Type these in-game.
/run AddTrackedAchievement(11153)
/run AddTrackedAchievement(11154)
Each of these lines will add an achievement tracker, just like tracking a quest. They'll track tint 3 and 4, respectively. For tint 2...well, for whatever reason, there's a bit more nuance to that. You'll need to use this command to check your total:
/run local s = 0; for i=1,11 do local _,_,_,a = GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(11152,i); s = s + a; end DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Dungeons: "..s.."/100");
EDIT THE NINTH AND TOTALLY FINAL: All this edit business is taking a lot of screen space. I don't like to take what I don't need, so it's all getting shoved into a spoiler tag.
EDIT THE SECOND:
Having now actually
gotten
a hidden appearance myself, I now see that tint 2 might be a bit more complex than originally anticipated. When tracking tints 3 and 4, you just see a single line that says "- x/200" or "- x/1000". Tint 2 shows five lines that say "- x/100" with an ellipsis indicating there is more.
It appears that tint 2 is tracked...differently. It has twelve counters, perhaps one for each class. Fortunately, there still seems to be a way to get your progress. I had to use the original method below, but with a twist.
/dump GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(11152,SOMENUMBER)
Do a dungeon, then keep using the above command, replacing SOMENUMBER with numbers 0 through 11. You're looking for a line that says "=X", where X is any number greater than 0. Once you find the non-zero number, that number is how many dungeons out of 100 you've done. My progress seems to be tracked under (11152,6). I'm a fire mage, so my (nearly-baseless) theory is that mages will always use (11152,6).
EDIT THE THIRD:
Alright, I give up. I have absolutely no idea how tint 2 is tracked, or if it's even
working
properly.
First off, I can't tell for sure whether or not the criteria index starts from 0 or 1, because (11152,0) returns data, but wowprogramming.com documentation says it starts from 1. On top of that, eleven indices makes no sense. Twelve would make sense; one per class. Ten would make sense; one per dungeon. I would
guess
it starts from 1, but I can't be 100% sure.
But here's where I'm really confused; I've done two dungeons with the hidden appearance. The first one incremented index 6 to 1/100. The second incremented index 3 to 1/100. (For what it's worth, they were DHT and VotW, in order, both heroic, both chosen randomly from the random heroic queue) I have absolutely no idea why two different indices were incremented. Furthermore, this has unfortunate implications concerning the hidden achievement's function. I'd guess it triggers once one of the indices reaches 100/100, which means you might be in for as many as 1090 dungeons before you finally get tint 2.
Someone really needs to figure this out.
EDIT THE FOURTH:
Who am I kidding, I'm not going to give up. I even made a quick script to make it much, much easier.
/run local s = 0; for i=1,11 do _,_,_,a = GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(11152,i); s = s + a; DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(i..":"..a); end DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Sum:"..s);
This script will print the values we're interested in for all eleven indices, in the form "index:value", after which it will print the sum of them all.
And, for those keeping score, I did heroic VH through a random and index 8 incremented.
EDIT THE FIFTH:
Alright, after gathering 17 data points, I think I've divined the pattern. The indices correspond to dungeons.
=BRH
=EoA
=DHT
=HoV
=Nel's Lair
=VotW
=?
=VH
=(Arc OR CoS)
=(CoS OR Arc)
=Maw
Index 7 still returns 0 for me. Perhaps it corresponds to a dungeon that never made it to live. Maybe Falanaar or Moon Guard Stronghold were originally going to be 5-mans, but got demoted. Or perhaps index 7 is going to be new Karazhan. (Do note; this is all speculation)
I ran both Arc and CoS before checking my data again, so I'm not sure which is which, but one is index 9 and the other is index 10.
I haven't been checking index 0. I checked it just now, and it returns the same value as index 1 (which, incidentally, is not equal to the value of any other index 2~11). My sum of indices 1~11 has risen by exactly one with each dungeon completed, so I believe it's safe to assume that index 1 is returned when index 0 is called.
Lastly, note that I am not statistically confident of this index=dungeon correlation. In math terms, p>0.05. Perhaps this correlation will continue as I complete more dungeons. Perhaps it won't. But I'll let you know.
EDIT THE SIXTH:
After speaking briefly with someone that knows how to code (probably even better than me), I have tentatively good news.
They report that tint 2 does indeed unlock after 100 dungeons, IE when all of the indices sum to 100. I can't confirm this firsthand, but I believe them.
As for the correlation between index and dungeon, I feel I can safely confirm that it is indeed correlated as described above. Furthermore, (I can't be quite as sure about this quite yet) it seems that index 7 corresponds to Fel Lord Betrug kills and index 8 corresponds to Sael'orn kills. Both final bosses of the same dungeon.
With all that in mind, here's a simpler script that just gives you the sum, IE, the true count of how many dungeons you've run.
/run local s = 0; for i=1,11 do _,_,_,a = GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(11152,i); s = s + a; end DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Sum:"..s);
As soon as I reach a sum of 100, I'll edit one last time to let you know.
EDIT THE SEVENTH:
Currently at 86/100, but editing to say: I don't know if Karazhan counts. At the very least, there does not appear to be a 12th index to reference. Not sure if this is intentional.
EDIT THE EIGHTH AND FINAL:
Hitting 100/100 total did indeed unlock tint 2. Apparently I also unlocked tint 4 at some point and got
风尚之战:隐藏
, despite having a massive aversion to PvP.

I recently complete Glory of the LEgion Hero achievement and it did not unlock the weapon appearance. I submitted an in game ticket and the game master told me that is not how the weapon appearance is unlocked. Noone in my dungeon team got the appearance either. The gM wouldnt tell me how to unlock it and instead said you'll have to go to wowhead or somewhere to find out, it is intended the community figures it out. Like wtf. How do i get this appearance?

So I just died a little inside. Looks like to unlock the Valorous appearance, I have to be able to pull off a normal raid for at least four weeks to complete the questline from Emerald Nightmare. Not just once, but to gather 30 items. I really thought I would be able to get this appearance eventually, and if they never add the items to LFR my whole Legion experience is going to be shaded by disappointment.

I couldn't figure out how to set the artifact appearance after unlocking it... I was at the seed where I add skills to my artifact weapon and messed with the appearance tab, but nothing was happening. Come to find out, it's because I had the glyph on my darn Bear Form. Get some vanishing powder from the Supplies person at any Inscription trainer area and you're good to go.

Good afternoon! Do you get an announcement when you've unlocked a particular tint? For instance, when I've completed 200 world quests with my hidden appearance, will it notify me or do I just have to keep checking my order hall? Thanks!

Can somebody confirm that Tint 4 can also be completed from friendly fire? I started with 0/200 after receiving the new appearance. I used the tracking command, then went into heroic Emerald Nightmare and after a night of raiding with a few wipes I came out with 200/1000. I think friendly fire may count as well.

I've created a single macro to track dungeon, world quest, and player kill progress.
/run local a={Dungeons=11152,WQs=11153,PKs=11154}for b,c in pairs(a)do local d,e=0;for f=1,GetAchievementNumCriteria(c)do local g,h=0;g,g,g,h,e=GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(c,f)d=d+h end;print(b..": "..d.."/"..e)end
This macro will output something similar to:
PKs: 0/1000
WQs: 0/200
Dungeons: 0/100
Additionally, you can track these hidden achievements.
100 Dungeon Completions (final boss kills)
Hidden Tracking - Appearance Unlock - Hidden - Color 2
Keep in mind that dungeons are tracked individually, and the sum of all of the dungeons is what counts for the achievement.
/run AddTrackedAchievement(11152)
200 World Quests
Hidden Tracking - Appearance Unlock - Hidden - Color 3 (update criteria when world quests available)
/run AddTrackedAchievement(11153)
1000 Player Kills (of any kind)
Hidden Tracking - Appearance Unlock - Hidden - Color 4
/run AddTrackedAchievement(11154)
Please let me know if this helps you out!
Edit:
I condensed the macro and included
卡拉赞
(and any future dungeons).

I was using an achiev tracker for hidden tint 4 and it appears that people deaths in raids are also counted towards it, not only pvp kills. This may be a bug though

BookKeeper
I do not know if I am the happy victim of a bug or if this is intentional, but I have unlocked the 1000 pvp kills skin for my artifact and I have knowingly killed the grand total of
3
players in pvp. My priest has not even set one delicate little toe in a BG, so I know for sure how many people I've killed.
I
have
, however, done a *bleep*-ton of pvp world quests. So
probably
maybe those kills count towards the total.
I can't track it anymore, all unlocked and such, but someone might want to track the achievement and confirm or disprove this alternative way of getting the pvp skin.

Not sure if this was asked already, but do you have to unlock the appearances in order? For the Valorus, for example, while I don't have the Balance of Power quest done, I have the achievement Unleashed Monstrosities completed but I don't have the option to use the appearance for it.

I modified the scripts on this page to give a more complete and accurate count for the dungeon achievement. I believe this includes Karazhan, too.
Just for dungeons:
/run local s = 0; for i=0,12 do local _,_,_,a = GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(11152,i); s = s + a; end DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage("Dungeons: "..s.."/100");
All 3 achievements:
/run local a={WQs=11153,HKs=11154}local b=0;for i=0,12 do local _,_,_,c=GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(11152,i)b=b+c end;print("Dungeons: "..b.."/100")for k,v in pairs(a)do local _,_,_,d,e=GetAchievementCriteriaInfo(v,1)print(k..": "..d.."/"..e)end

I'm not sure what's up with the Dungeon counter for the unique skin. It's telling me I've only run 7 dungeons, but that's not accurate. I ran 5 just today, and between heroic runs, mythic runs, and mythic+ runs, I should be much higher than this.

Just in case someone is wondering... regarding the "Valorous" appearances...
YES
, Blizzard did screw you over with these tints in this particular appearance tree.
NO
, you are not mistaken.
YES
you, you are correct, you did completed the "required" achievement to unlock the "unleashed monstrosities", "Mythic 15+", and "Glory of the Legion Hero" appearance,
BUT NO
you do not get to use your appearance after all of your time, effort, and hardwork/patience that went into obtaining these tints.
WHY?
Because you have to complete the
"Balance of Power"
quest line before you will
EVER
get to use the other appearances that tree you worked hard to get, since blizzard said screw you guys, if you don't raid you get NONE of the other appearances. So, enjoy sitting on top of completed achievements but unavailable achievement rewards/appearances if you're not a raider or someone who doesn't have much time to raid on Normal mode EN or NH. Blizzard basically said your time and effort in the other achievements for this tree wasn't good enough, so we're going to give you this (hidden) requirement, then tell you, BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE (after you contact a GM to figure out why you aren't rewarded for completing the achievement to unlock said appearance)... it's in the fine print no one told you about.

For the hidden appearances that drop off bosses and other mobs, do u have to be in the spec that it is for in order for it to drop? I know It worked during 7.0 but since 7.2 I havent.

So I know it's late in the xpac at this point, but to unlock the Valorous Tint 3, with the Mythic +15 dungeon, it has to be completed within the time limit, even though that's not how it reads. A bit annoying when I finally completed one and got excited that it was unlocked and then it wasn't. :(

I have a question, now that we've moved on to Battle for Azeroth (BfA) expac, and are not in Legion any longer. If I want to unlock additional tints, such as unlocking the fourth tint of the Valorous appearance by doing "Glory of the Legion Hero", do I have to be doing this with a Legion artifact weapon equipped? Or can I use the more advanced BfA weapons? I am most concerned with the tints from the Challenge Appearance (by completing a Mage Tower challenge). I completed the Mage Tower challenge very late in Legion, and I didn't get tints two or four (killing Kil'jaeden or completing all ten Legion dungeons) unlocked yet. I had done those things earlier in the expac, before I finished Mage Tower, but someone pointed out to me that the tints unlock only if you do those things *after* the base appearance gets unlocked by the Mage Tower challenge... well, it was so late in Legion by the time I conquered Mage Tower that I never went back and re-ran all the dungeons or ToS to get the 2nd and 4th tints. Now I want to do that. But hence my question: the text above suggests that you must kill Kil'jaeden with one of the artifact weapons equipped, any weapon for any spec, but it suggests that it must be a Legion artifact weapon. Ditto for clearing the ten dungeons. Do I need to re-run all ten dungeons and ToS with one of the artifact weapons to unlock these two tints now? Can't I just use the more advanced BfA weapons?

Some tips for getting artifact appearances in Shadowlands
1. Make sure you've done the Legion intro questline, available from the hero's call board in your faction major city
2. When you arrive in Dalaran, an NPC will come up to you and chase you around, follow it and it will be the start of the artifact questline (if you havent done the Legion intro then the NPC will come up to you but the questline wont start. Also if you've got a Dalaran hearthstone it wont work)
3. In your class hall you can see the various artifact appearances, and requirements, in your
artifact forge
(see the tab "appearances" on the bottom left of the artifact forge interface window)
- If you unlock an appearance, you unlock the corresponding transmog for the artifacts of your other specs.
- If you unlock an appearance, other characters on your account of the same class can use that transmog
- To unlock an appearance, you may need to open your artifact forge and physically select it first, after which the transmog becomes available. When doing so, you obv need to be holding your artifact, but it may not work if that artifact is already transmogged to something else before you open the forge. You may also need to log out and log back in again for some reason.
4. To advance the class hall campaign, you do not need to do the questline that Khadgar starts from "A falling star", only the ones that come under "priest campaign" (or "druid campaign etc) in your quest list when you press L to get your map up. However doing Khadgars quest from "A falling star" to recover the
Light's Heart
(which you get after doing the Exodar scenario) gives one of the tier 1 tints.
5. An easy
Pillar of Creation
to get is the Valarjar one: the Aegis of Aggrimar. It takes about an hour and a half to do the Stormheim story and get it. You'll need the Valarjar rep for Balance of Power anyway.
6. The first
pvp appearance
isnt too tricky to get, there are quick quests in Alterac Valley and Ashran that award 1000 honor each, and can be done on multiple characters
7. After you've finished the class hall campaign, you have to wait a few days before the
Balance of Power
opening quest becomes available in your Class Hall. To complete the Balance of power questline you need to be revered with the Nightfallen and the Valarjar (and honored with the Court of Farondis), so starting those rep grinds in advance is advisable. Balance of power needs 2 weekly resets due to the quest items you need to get from the Emerald Nightmare and the Nighthold, which may take 2 runs each (should be easily doable in 2 runs each, possibly one). Therefore Balance of Power takes about 3 weeks
8. For most specs, the first
hidden artifact appearance
is easy to get: the ones that drop in loot now have 100% drop chance. The other hidden artifact tints dont need the first tint to unlock (provided you've unlocked at least one hidden artifact of any spec on that character). After you unlock the first tint for
one
spec, completing the requirements for the other tints (30 dungeons, 200 world quests etc), unlocks the corresponding hidden tint for
all
specs (even specs where you'd previously not had any hidden tints).
Good luck!

"This is Game Master Enmosyer. I hope your day is going well. I understand that the tint for recovering the pillars wasn't activating still.
I can imagine that's confusing. So I did some looking and I can see the mix-up! So the Eye of Aman'thul is not considered a pillar of creation for the artifact appearances. The other four showing in the achievement will. These involve going through the questlines in the respective zone."

The progress for completing 30 dungeons seems to have been reset at some point recently? I had been keeping a spreadsheet for my alts and they had partial progress for the 30, but when I ran the check script on them today they were all at 0 :( I ran Violet Hold on my pally (who had been at 16/30, cry), and it did go up to 1/30, so at least the Legion dungeons still count. Still annoying though.
EDIT: Just did BRH and it is still at 1/30 so.... don't know what the deal is there.
EDIT2: This appears to be a current issue! If you're trying to get the 30 dungeons tint unlocked, now looks like a bad time to try knocking it out. Hopefully it gets resolved soon!

In my experience, as of late BFA and mid-Shadowlands, you HAVE to do the requirements for the Mage Tower tints ON THE CHARACTER YOU COMPLETED THE MAGE TOWER CHALLENGE ON DURING LEGION. I have a new Druid that I ran H KJ with on my new main server during Shadowlands and DID NOT get the Mage Tower tint. This and the Hidden Appearance variants are probably one the most problematic instances of "not futureproofed" in the game right now, as if I, and a handful of other people I know, want to earn their Mage Tower tints, we have to dig up half the classes that were abandoned to move to a new server. Can we please get a fix on this? I really don't wanna reestablish abandoned characters that I can't afford to transfer (the reason they were abandoned in the first place) just for appearances linked to heavy RNG or extremely time consuming content, linked to a no longer obtainable skin.
Yes, it's kinda a nitpick, and sure, "You shouldn't have abandoned those characters in the first place then", but, like, if I'm not attached to a particular Class - such as Druid or Rogue, which HAVE the Appearances (I got all 36) - why should I be forced into the SPECIFIC character for the activity to complete the tint unlock requirements? If I can transmog it on a different toon of the same Class, why can I not unlock the other appearances that way? Just makes no sense /shrug

Question: if I unlock a tint on any character does it unlock them on all characters for my account?
Specifically if i’ve done balance of power on my druid, and now I’m doing “this side up” archeology and “unleashed monstrosities” on my death knight; will it unlock the tint on both of them; or do i need to complete each of these on every individual character within the same account?
