Welcome to Wowhead's Unholy Death Knight guide for Arena PvP (Player vs Player), up to date for 9.2! This guide outlines the role of Unholy Death Knights in PvP, their strengths and weaknesses, strong compositions for Unholy Death Knights, and effective PvP strategies. It also includes advice on talent builds and PvP talent builds for Unholy Death Knights, as well as recommended gear, covenants, macros, and addons for PvP. This up-to-date guide aims to help you improve as an Unholy Death Knight in all aspects of arena PvP.

Unholy Death Knight PvP Overview
Unholy Death Knight offers a variety of disruptive tools as well as very high damage output. Additionally, we have various ways to protect ourselves and our teammates from magic dealing classes. While we do have weak mobility, we can instead counter the opponent's high mobility with these tools.
Unholy Death Knight Strengths in PvP
High Damage Output
Unholy Death Knights deal an enormous amount of both consistent and burst damage in Arena. Although Unholy damage is mostly consistent (due to
恶性瘟疫
,

and

s), abilities such as
Unholy Assault
,
黑暗突变
,
天启
,

, and our covenant ability
憎恶附肢
have high burst potential if used correctly.
Utility Spells
Unholy Death Knights have a large amount of utility spells on relatively short cooldowns. Part of this utility actually comes from your
亡者复生
pet. When under the effects of
黑暗突变
, your pet's
撕扯
ability lasts 2 seconds instead of 1 second, and
跳跃
becomes a ranged kick/root called
蹒跚冲锋
. Then we have our own ranged kick,
心灵冰冻
. With these two ranged kicks and our
死亡之握
, you can effectively interrupt three spell casts without even using your
窒息
and
撕扯
stuns. I'm sure you can now see why Unholy Death Knights are valuable to have on your team. Keep in mind that since
撕扯
is such a short stun with a long cooldown, it is almost always better to use it to stop an enemy spell cast rather than using it immediately after
窒息
ends (although when your pet is under the effects of
黑暗突变
it
is
sometimes good to use directly after).
寒冰锁链
is another utility spell that prevents your enemies from dealing damage and crowd control to you and your teammates. An example of this would be slowing a Priest who is running at your healer with
寒冰锁链
, thus preventing your healer from getting crowd controlled with
心灵尖啸
. It can also prevent a healer from getting to their own teammates to heal them. Make sure you keep
寒冰锁链
on up as much as possible!
Strong Against Casters
Unholy Death Knights are typically harder for casters to kill because of their magic defensives.

can be used to avoid magical crowd control effects on yourself.

should be used as soon as enemies use their magical offensive cooldowns, like

(which changes upon different Warlock specializations). You can also take the

Excellent Kiting Abilities
Unholy Death Knights can easily kite using
死亡脚步
combined with
寒冰锁链
. This strategy is highly effective against other melee DPS. A good example of this would be when you are fighting a Warrior. When a Warrior
冲锋
s you, their next ability will most likely be
断筋
. You can purposely save
死亡脚步
to counter their slow, and reverse the situation by using your own slow on them.
死亡脚步
is even more powerful when paired with
飞逝之风
, which is one of our Finesse conduits. In addition we have the option of choosing the
幻影步
talent.
Great Self-Healing Abilities
灵界打击
is a powerful healing ability, and should be used after being hit hard. This is because it heals based on the amount of damage you have taken within the last five seconds.
天灾契约
can benefit you by healing you for 50% of your maximum HP. On the other hand, it can actually harm you due to the 30% healing absorption it puts on you. Because of this, it is generally best to use it at as high of a HP percentage as you feel comfortable (around 40-50% HP is what I recommend in order to receive the maximum value). If you do use it at low HP, your healer will have a tough time keeping you alive when having to deal with both incoming damage and the healing absorption debuff.
With
巫妖之躯
you turn into an undead and
凋零缠绕
can be used to heal yoursef. While
巫妖之躯
is active, it removes Fears and immunes

if used before the cast ends. It's sometimes good to use
巫妖之躯
while running into Rogue/Mage/Healer because It also immunes

. This can completely ruin their opener.
牺牲契约
is a mini-
天灾契约
but also deals damage. It will sacrifice your ghoul, so try to avoid using it when if your pet has high HP or if
亡者复生
is on cooldown. It should also be avoided being used when
黑暗突变
is active. If your ghoul is low HP while it is active, unless it's a moment where you can die, it's worth saving your pet with
凋零缠绕
. You can also heal your
培育憎恶
and any of your minions.

heals us based on how much healing it absorbs.
Strong Offensive Healing Absorption
死疽伤口
allows us to deal damage with
天灾打击
/
暗影之爪
and absorb enemy healing taken at the same time. The only drawback to the talent is that does not stack infinitely like
死疽打击
did in the past. It's still very powerful and a great addition to our toolkit. Try to stack it to 6 as soon as possible!
Unholy Death Knight Weaknesses in PvP
Rune System Difficulty
The Death Knight rune system can be tricky to learn. Even to experienced Death Knights, it's very easy to mess up and not have runes when you really need them. This makes the rune system difficult to master.
Mobility Issues
幻影步
is a really helpful spell to deal with mobility issues but is unfortunately in the same row as
噬法者
and
天灾契约
. When having to choose between mobility or survivability vs magic casters, survivability is almost always the better choice. This leaves us with
死亡之握
and
寒冰锁链
. Majority of Death Knight compositions reserve
死亡之握
to set up double/triple stuns/cc chains. Examples include
扫堂腿
if a Monk is on your team and
破胆怒吼
if a Warrior is on your team. Keep in mind that if you use
死亡之握
to get to a target or stop a cast, you lose your kill window.
寒冰锁链
is very useful to get to the enemy but it costs runes. When you're spamming damage it can often times leave you low on runes or even no runes at all. Because of this it's really important to have excellent rune management!
Weak Against Melee
Although wearing Plate, Death Knights in general are weaker against melee classes because we really only have
冰封之韧
to defend ourselves. That doesn't mean
冰封之韧
isn't useful, in fact quite the opposite as it breaks/immunes stuns and reduces damage taken by 30%. It's also a pretty long cooldown, but thankfully we have
凛冬坚韧
to help reduce it.
Unholy Death Knight in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
I will be referring to the following changes throughout this portion of the Guide.
Patch Notes for Unholy:
憎恶附肢
(Necrolord Ability) damage increased by 20%.
憎恶之狂
(Necrolord Runecarving Power) now increases enemy damage taken from the Death Knight by 20% (was 10%), and enemies affected by
憎恶之狂
now also take increased damage from your Minions for the duration.
最终裁决
(Kyrian Runecarving Power) now grants 4% damage per stack (was 3%), duration reduced to 15 seconds (was 18 seconds), and now grants the Rune and Damage buff on the initial cast of
失格者之梏
(and again each time it spreads).

(Night Fae Runecarving Power) Strength per stack of

increased by 3% (was 2%).

(Conduit) now reduces the cooldown of

by 1 second per

burst at all ranks and now also increases

(Conduit) increases Minion damage by 6% (was 3%).

Talents and Racials in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Talents:
With Patch 9.2, Unholy can benefit from using
爆裂之疡
because of the massive buff from
死灵集结
(see the above Patch Notes for more details).

still remains the better talent though. This is because it stacks with our new 4 Set Bonus,

Our 2 Set Bonus,

pretty much gives us the talent

. It's worth mentioning that the actual talent and the

stack, so you could potentially get two

to proc at the same time for huge damage.
Racials:
There are currently no changes to my recommendations of which race to choose, but in Patch 9.2.5 we will be able to queue Arena cross faction. For more details, visit

Rotations and Strategy in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
There won't be any significant changes to the rotation in Patch 9.2, but as said above, taking
灵魂收割
combined with our new 2-Set Bonus,

is a new strategy to utilize. This is expanded upon here.
Gear and Legendaries in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Gear:
We will be receiving the following set bonuses in Patch 9.2:

. These are very strong if they go off, and can make your pet crit 10k+!
There will be a bunch of new PvP Trinkets in Patch 9.2. I go over them in depth here (scroll down to the Trinket Section).
Legendaries:
With the massive buffs to Necrolord,

will stay the best burst Legendary for PvP. It stacks with
憎恶之狂
!
Since
死神之拥
is also getting buffed,
死亡终途
is a great choice as well and will provide more consistent damage than
狂热畸兽
. I would always use this with
末日使者
.
Covenants in Shadowlands Patch 9.2
Necrolord will stay the top Unholy Death Knight covenant in Patch 9.2 for the following reasons:
1.
憎恶附肢
received two damage buffs, one directly to the ability, and another from
残暴之握
.
2. The Necrolord Legendary
憎恶之狂
also received a powerful buff, and we can use it as a 2nd Legendary with

. This legendary also buffs
憎恶附肢
(and of course all our other spells).
With all of this combined, it's extremely difficult to say that another covenant is better.

Unholy Death Knight in 9.1.5
There are a few minor but very impactful changes Unholy received for PVP in 9.1.5.

(Necrolord Ability) no longer interrupts the Death Knight’s channeling abilities and no longer pulls stealthed enemies:
This is a change I've been wanting for a while because there are many times where I've needed to use

only for it to accidentally get interrupted by
憎恶附肢
.

damage increased by 30% in PvP combat:
This change synergizes well with the conduit

and our talent

. You can use this talent a lot more now, maybe even baseline. It was previously underperforming compared to the other two talents in that row and wasn't worth taking. With the increased damage and the conduit, I'd say it's pretty powerful now.
In addition to these changes, majority of the AoE abilities in the game are no longer maximum target capped and now deal reduced damage beyond a certain number of targets. This is definitely a plus for Unholy since we deal a large amount of AoE damage. Here are the exact spells affected:

back for Unholy feels great. It will most likely be taken every game unless you are playing with a class that already has a silence, like Shadow Priests.
生死攸关
: This talent was reworked and now heals you for 5% of any healing received by targets affected by
恶性瘟疫
instead of
溃烂之伤
s (which it was doing before). This is a great change and in theory should provide more healing since it's easier to keep
恶性瘟疫
up on multiple targets than
溃烂之伤
s.

Thanks for the detailed and well conceived guide !
There's one question I'd like to ask and if I could get an answer to this, I would be very pleased! :D
Should I use scourge strike in PvP (considering it to be a higher burst than converting the festering wounds) (ofc I understand why to use Necrotic strike)
I mean can I completely dismiss Scourge Strike then?(cuz Action bars and key bindings are pretty filled up^^) Or may there be situations where the little extra burst comes in Handy?
Furthermore if I use necrotic strike on an enemy who has already festering wounds on him, will they still do the popping damage(if converted to necrotic wounds) and therefore will I get the extra runic power?

How is Necromancer's Bargain of any use?
It does not refresh per HoT tick, only per spell, just as the description says. It is an absolute garbage. Test, then write.

I'd like to recommend a change to the Raise Abom macro, as the one you list does not swap between AOTD and Raise Abom.
If you use the same macro, but just replace it with Army of the Dead, it'll swap between them.
So if you just make it;

/cast Army of the Dead
It'll swap between Abom and AOTD :) Hope this helps!

the removal of corruption & introduction of the new, fresh set of 'building block' choices is super exciting ! very refreshing to see a genuine guide get this part right .. there is no 'bad' covenant for any class , and there is no 'bad' legendary , and there can be no '#1' all across the board - every encounter , every dungeon , every affix combination , every BG , every arena match , every secondary stat combination stumbled on during course of gearing . . thank you
