Heres some tips on how to be a great fisher.
-Use items that improve your fishing when you fish. You'll have a higher chance of catching one.
-Rods are pretty expensive so try not to spend a lot on rods.
-Training Costs a lot too.
-Some fishes are used for Professions. Sell some of the fish at the AH and you'll make money.
-When your fishing hook bobs, wait a half a second then click it. Or else the fish will slip away.

I'm a hunter and found fishing to be a really helpful skill to have when needing to feed my pet. A good tip is to not skimp out on rods and baits. Spend the money. It's worth it in the long run.

Here is more information on the Fishing Extravaganza.
At 2pm every Sunday, a goblin in Booty Bay will start telling everyone to fish 40 'tastyfish'. These are rare fish found in the shores of southern STV, and fishers must race to fish all of them first. After this, they must return the fish to the goblin. The first one to do so will receive the Hook of the Master Angler -
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=19979#z0z
This is a great item, both in practical uses and for fun. It works in the same way as druids' water travel form.
Those who do not hand theirs in first can still hand them in for money, as long as they do it before 4pm that day.
Apart from this, you can also fish for other rare fish and also obtain fun items.
Here is more information about the Fishing Extravaganza -

Note you cannot fish the 40 over a long period of time and 'save them up'. After a few hours they become rotten.

So you want to be a fisherman? Fishing is a mini-game that allows you to catch fish, which can be used with the cooking secondary skill. You can also catch fish that cannot be eaten but are instead useful for other Professions. You can even catch equipment and funny items. Fishing isn't for everyone. You'll discover that it requires a lot of patience and time to build your skill level up to the maximum level. Fishing is the only trade skill that you can't do while exploring and killing monsters. Since you're basically standing around, you're not gaining experience or other loot. So this development can put your leveling behind, unlike some other Professions. Fishing is great for people who just want to relax and chat while playing. For those who enjoy a calm, relaxing way to play the game while finding useful items, fishing is the cat's meow.
GETTING STARTED
First, you need to find a fishing trainer. Fishing trainers are usually located next to a lake or stream. If you see an NPC standing near the water, he's likely a fishing trainer or merchant. Ask around and people can help lead you to the fishing trainer. Once you have learned fishing, you need to go find yourself a fishing pole!
FISHING POLES
After you have trained in fishing, you need to go buy a fishing pole. Fishing poles can be purchased from merchants who sell items required for Professions ("trade merchants"). Ask other people where to find one, if you need help. After using your initial Fishing Pole, you can find better ones out there in the world. Check the Auction House for poles.
Blump Family Fishing Pole* +3
Strong Fishing Pole +5
Darkwood Fishing Pole +15
Big Iron Fishing Pole +20
Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000** +25
Arcanite Fishing Pole*** +35
*Alliance only quest. Talk to Gubber Blump in Auberdine (Darkshore).
**Horde only quest. Talk to Katoom the Angler at Revantusk Village in the Hinterlands.
***Reward for winning the Stranglethorn Fishing Contest.
BAIT
Find a merchant who sells bait. Typically, this vendor will be a "trade merchant". You can then use this bait to raise your fishing skill so that you have an easier time catching fish. Bait wears off after a period of time, so you must continue to reapply it. You can buy better bait for higher bonuses to fishing. You will need Aquadynamic Fish Attractors for the highest level fishing areas. These can be created by Engineers.
Shiny Bauble +25 for 10 minutes
Nightcrawlers +50 for 10 minutes
Bright Baubles +75 for 10 minutes
Flesh Eating Worm +75 for 10 minutes
Aquadynamic Fish Attractor +100 for 5 minutes
USING YOUR FISHING POLE
You will now need to equip the fishing pole. Place it in your main weapon hand. If you have both a main weapon and a secondary shield, you will need to remove both before equipping the fishing pole.
Equip your fishing pole and open up your abilities menu. You will now find a new icon for fishing (or its associated hot key). Drag it over to your action bar.
Now find somewhere to fish. Find the nearest river or lake, or go to the ocean. Face the water and press the fishing button. Your character will make a cast out into the water. If you are unable to fish, you will be informed via an error message with the specific error. Try fishing in another area. If there is not enough room to cast, such as with a narrow river, you might receive an error. Try repositioning.
THE FISHING BOBBER GAME
Once you have made your cast, a fishing bobber will appear. Move your mouse over the fishing bobber, which should reveal the standard loot/interaction icon.
You must now wait until the fishing bobber moves and you see a splash. Fishing requires patience. It's not for everybody. A timer will appear and begin counting down after you cast. The timer indicates the length of your

The timer indicates the length of your current cast. After the timer is up, you'll have to cast again. Right-click on the bobber as soon as possible after the bobber moves. The game portion involves timing it right so that your right-click will result in the fish being caught and not getting away.
If you are successful, you will receive a loot box and you'll be able to catch the fish. If you are not successful a message will inform you that the fish got away.
The splash/hook may occur at different times along the timing bar. Sometimes the splash/hook appears right before the time is up, requiring you to click quickly before the fishing operation is canceled. As you fish more, you will likely become better at clicking at the right time.
Sometimes the bobber doesn't bob at all during the fishing period. Just cast again.
"No fish are hooked"
This means you clicked on the fishing bobber at the wrong time. Try again.
"Your fish got away!"
This means you are fishing in an area that is difficult for your skill level. If you receive this message a lot or all of the time, you need to go to a lower level fishing area. If you only receive this message part of the time, you're in the right area to gain skill-ups. You can reduce this from happening by getting a better fishing pole, applying powerful bait, getting a fishing enchant or item, or by raising your skill (which these items do).
FISHING AREAS
The area (region) you're in is listed in the top right corner of your screen and will determine what fish are available to be caught. The first place you should fish is near the starting area for your race. If you try to start off in a more difficult fishing area, it will take much longer to catch fish and to begin building up your fishing skill level. You cannot determine the difficulty-level of the fishing area except through experience, the type of fish you catch, and how often you fail to catch a fish. If you fail a lot, then you're probably in the wrong area. You should try fishing in an easier area. Experiment with different fishing areas. You should figure it out. The level on the items you catch should also let you know how difficult the area is.
SPECIAL FISHING POOlS
There are special fishing pools located throughout the world that allow you to fish up special fish. To fish them you must continue to cast until your fishing bobber lands inside the animated circle. If it is outside, you will not get the special fish. You can fish the pool 4-6 times before the pool is depleted and disappears.
Oily Black Mouth Shoal
Firefin Snapper Shoal
Sage fish Shoal
Greater Sage fish Shoal
Deviate fish Shoal
Eel Shoal (Ferlas/Tanaris/Azshara/Stranglethorn Vale)
FLOATING WRECKAGE
There are special floating wreckage areas. You can find some in Stranglethorn Vale. To fish them you must continue to cast until your fishing bobber lands inside the animated circle. If it is outside, you will not get the special items. You can get special lockboxes and chests and sometimes healing and mana potions. The chests sometimes contain valuable items such as green items, runecloth bolts, mageweave bolts, money, leather, and more.

Fishing is also great thing and important to have as a hunter if you have the following pets Bear, Boar, Carrion Bird, Cat, Crab, Crocolisk, Dragonhawk, Serpent, Turtle, Warp Stalker or Wind Serpent Because if you can not fine any food by killing animals you can always catch a fish to feed your pet.

Master Fishing (275+) is taught by , a book, which can be purchased from Juno Dufrain at Cenarion Refuge in Zangarmarsh, in Outland. The price is 5G. You could also check the Auction House, but you better expect to pay more than the original price.

How in the hell are you suppose to get from 75 to 125 fishing skill? I have gone to a couple different trainers and neither of them can teach me any skills. I bought the expert book in the AH for 125 - 225 but obviously that does no good right now.

In my opinion best way to level is...
1. Go into sound options.
2. Put "Master Volume" and "Sound" to full.
3. Turn down "Music" and "Ambience" to the lowest they go.
4. Put wow into window mode just larger enough to see the area where your cast will land (I only have about half the window on screen, rest is off to the right).
4. Watch random webtoons/movies on computer and when you hear the insanely loud sound of a fish pulling on the line you click on your wow window, right click bobber, click fishing icon again.
Notes: Not saying this will make leveling you fish skill go faster. Just makes it less painfully unbearable since you can be entertained with random things in the mean time.
Just for leveling, goes slower if you actually care what your catching(actually got to move for schools). I don't ever actually keep the fish i catch because when i level fishing on whatever character it's generally in some lowbie zone right out side of a major city (In the city a lot of people like to be annoying by standing on your bobber. Org is the worst since its right next to spot people wait for bgs/arenas at).
And yes, fishing in certain zones to catch certain things is a great way to level cooking. So is buying stuff off the AH to do it because it's generally relatively cheap to max out cooking this way (I've done 1-375 for about 120g. Not bad imo, especially when dailys give you more then that if you actually do them).

Ugh, this is assuming anyone actually SOLD the fish. I hate fishing and have spent the last week over the course of an absurd amount of hours waiting for people to sell squid, lobster, sunscale, nightfin ANYTHING that'll lvl me from 275-300 and I haven't seen a single one for sale.

Fishing is now even more valuable before. I got my fishing up Pre-BC and now I'm wishing I did the same with my cooking.
Fishing allows you to do a fishing daily, which awards gold, vendor junk, lures, water walking potions and in some instances you can get a non-combat pet. Also a useful book for find fish can drop out of your bag. Why is this useful? Easier to track the fish "nodes". There is one node I use it for in particular.
Nagrand has a special perk for fishermen, Pure Water. Get your fishing to 375, grab the new BC pole and fish out motes of water. This is my favorite fishing "node"
Certain fish are used to make certain foods, some of these foods can be rather valuable on the AH, such as the Golden Fishsticks from Golden Darter in Terrokar.
BC fishing has one downside, at 375 most of your fish get away. You'll need a lure at virtually every cast, and you'll need a good one. +100 lures work for me. I also have a +20 fishing pole, and on occasion some Captain Rumsey's Lager to boost my fishing over 500.
Hope that helps keep it up to date.

Just a question:
do you need to be in a zone that has about your fishing lvl to get skill ups there or can you do it anywhere, because i'm fishing in Zangarmarsh and i'm using a lot of fish attractors, but im wondering if I can fish in stormwind and not spend the lures.
Please don't downgrade this, its a question and i'm sure a lot of people would like to see the answer.

For the Horde, the Best place to start cooking/Fishing skill is Thunder bluff.
Just get both skills, and fish in the little pond on the lowest level of the center rise. You will find ALL THREE recipies for the only 3 fish you can get out of that pond at the Cooking Supplier and Fishing Supplier at the highest level of the center rise.
You can get BOTH skills past the journeyman level and well into the next rank in about 45 minutes or so (less if you buy a lure when you first start out.)
It's not just a question of it being an "easy" fishing spot, it's that you can get the cooking recipies for all the fish from the pond right there in Thunder bluff and pump both skills very quickly, and the three fish types from the pond are perfectly spaced to raise your cooking skill along with fishing. If you give cooking skill a head start with spice bread, you don't need too many of the smallest fish before you can start cooking the Mud Snappers. By the time you catch enough mud snappers to raise your cooking up to the point where you can cook the catfish, you should have a good number of those already.

Fishing Skill-Ups are based off a simple, standard formula and not location of where you are fishing. It makes no difference if you're in Orgrimmar/Stormwind or Borean Tundra/Howling Fjord. Heres the formula:
/25 = Number of
Successful Catches
per next point.
* - Your current fishing skill, before lures and the likes.

I started leveling fishing after 3.0.2, so every catch I made from 1-450 is counted for on the achievement page.
Upon reaching 450 fishing skill I had:
2337 fishes caught.
2665 fishes and other things caught.
Happy fishing!

I was thinking about it, and since I haven't seen anyone else post something to the below affect. I came up with a different use for a throwing macro that I have. With the below macro, I can fight when I have a weapon equipped; or fish when I have the fishing pole equipped.
I'm a Sub-Rogue and Hemo is my main attack. The line with "/use Forsight's Anticipation" is only there to show you can also add your trinkets on use abilities. Please feel free to add or remove the "/use *trinket*" line if unneeded by you.
#Showtooltip
/cast Hemorrhage; /cast Fishing
/use Foresight's Anticipation
I don't know who came up with the original macro concept, thanks go to him/her. I just used it in the above fashion cause I get tired of adding/removing/clicking/searching for/swapping the "Fishing" talent whenever I fish, get attempted ganked while fishing, or have mobs trained on me while fishing. Just equip my weapons and I'm ready to kill you.
*edit: Forgot to add - When you make the macro use the "?" (question mark) icon. Using that icon and placing the "#Showtooltip" line will show what you have equipped on the attack button. eg.: If you have your fishing pole equipped, the fishing icon will display. If you have a weapon equipped, the chosen attack will display.

This is just my opinion, but I believe they should give you a stats bonus for fishing or a ability. Honestly it's the longest proffession to level and it's only a secondary proffession. This is like a gathering proffession for cooking and it's makes decent amount of gold too. If I had to give fishing some proc that everyone could use. An ability that in use give the user a protective bubble around them for 30 secs 2 min cool down time. Name "Aquatic Presence" and like mining and other gathering skills futher skill up you get the higher the rank get and more potent the ability. Btw I'm saying they should do something like this and it my personal opinion some of you will agree on and may have a better idea for ability or stats. Reason why I'm posting this hopefully if enough people say something to them and then they will add it. Thanks for your time. Rate me up if you agree.

Is there somewhere I can find what level my fishing needs to be to fish and catch fish in certain zones? Such as what does my fishing level need to be to be able to fish and catch in Northrend, etc ..?

Just a quick note... There is an addon that will tell ya what fish you have caught in a zone and how many catches ya need to make to get your next point. it'll also show ya what your fishing skill is with and with out lures and bonuses from fishing hat and poles and such. the addon i use is called "fishing buddy". there are prolly others but it will also make it so all ya need to do is double right click to cast when you have a pole equipped and turns up the ambient sounds so ya hear the bobber bob louder.

If you are a low-level ALLIANCE and want to get a jump start on your fishing/cooking skills, here is -- by far -- the best way I've found:
At the first village after every starting zone (Dolanaar for Night Elves, Karanos for Gnomes and Dwarves, Goldshire for Humans, etc.) there is now a flight path (didn't used to be) with a free flight to the nearest Alliance capitol city (Darnassus, Iron Forge, Stormwind), If you want to go back and take up your races low-level quests, be sure to set your hearthstone before you leave.
Once in a capitol city, if you aren't already in Stormwind, you will be able to take a free boat (from Darnassus) or the free Deeprun Tram from Iron Forge, to Stormwind.
Once you arrive in Stormwind, go to Catherine Leland who is standing on a dock on the canal between the Trade District and the Mage District. Buy the recipe for cooking "Brilliant Smallfish" from her. Her husband, Arnold Leland, is standing right next to her, and he's a fishing trainer. Train apprentice fishing from him. (Although, if you forget, you'll come across another fishing trainer in a minute.)
After you've bought your Smallfish recipe (which you won't be able to use yet), also buy the least expensive fishing pole and one "Shiny Bauble" fishing lure. (You'll only need one.) I know you can fish without buying a fishing pole but, last I checked, you can't attach a lure to the little branch you fish with if you don't have a pole.
Now head yourself out of town and don't forget to salute to General Hammond Clay as you leave the gates. (He'll return your salute.)
Zip on down the road to Goldshire. You'll see a trade supplies vendor named Tharynn Bouden standing in front of the wagon with the red canvass roof. Buy the recipe for Longjaw Mud Snapper from him.
Run into the back room of the inn at Goldshire and train apprentice cooking. "Learn" your smallfish recipe.
You are now set to level up both your fishing and cooking to at least 100.
Run over to the little pond behind the Goldshire Inn. (Crystal Lake.) There is a fishing trainer on the dock at the lake in case you forgot to learn fishing from Arnold Leland in Stormwind.
Equip your pole and put your lure on. (Without the lure, you're going to spend
several
casts fishing up weeds and driftwood. With it, you'll actually catch fish from your first cast.)
If you stay on the shore behind Goldshire, fairly close to the dock, there isn't going to be anything (wolves or murlocs) bothering you while you're fishing. You might catch the odd mana or healing potion, but 99% of what you catch is going to be either Brilliant Smallfish or Longjaw Mud Snapper. Usually a few more smallfish than mud snapper.
By the time your lure wears off, you will have gotten to much more than 25 fishing skill points, so you will never be annoyed by catching weeds or whatever.
When you reach fishing skill of 50, trot over to the fishing trainer on the dock and train journeyman fishing. Then go back to fishing.
Once you've caught about 60 smallfish (and a similar number of mud snappers), run back into the inn at Goldshire and use the cooking fire in the kitchen. When you've finished cooking all of your smallfish, you should be over 50 skill points in cooking (but less than 75), so turn around and train journeyman cooking from the cooking trainer standing right next to you. "Learn" the recipe for Longjaw Mud Snapper you bought earlier, and finish by cooking up all of those you caught.
You should be at least at 100 fishing skill, and very close to -- if not over -- 100 cooking skill. If somehow you managed to still be a few skill points shy of 100 in cooking, run back over to Crystal Lake and catch a few more snappers.
Then, when you start doing the fishing dailies at level 10, if you're lucky enough to get the fishing hat or the "find fish" book, you'll be able to equip/learn it.
NOTE 1: Yes, if you are playing a Pandaren or Worgen, you will need to complete the required quests to leave those race's starting areas, so you will be probably at least level 10 before you can do this. All other races could do it at level 1, assuming they had the money for training, recipes, and supplies.
NOTE 2: Yes, this is assuming you have the attention span to spend about an hour fishing.
