Seeing as you've got two of each rune, does that mean that you can actually use this as a Mortal Strike twice in a row?
It doesn't have a cooldown now, but that might chance in the future. It's a really good ability one way or another though.

Only question I have, in a raid situation with 2-3 DK's, does it consume only your diseases or all of them? I only ask this because I saw a video from early in the beta with 5 DK's in one group and when one obliterated all 10 diseases were consumed. just wondering if that's been changed.

I'm a recovering dual-wielder, and I'm beginning to like Oblit. I started working on getting it into my build because of Sapphiron, and I really don't need to tank anymore, so that's free-ing up some low blood points.
Anywho, I'm in about 90% Naxx gear, with my bracers being the freakishly good Vengeance Bindings; wtb decent plate DPS rings. I'm running with Demise.
For single-target Oblit is about tied with HB right now -- the catch being that I havn't glyphed it yet! So once I finally get that, Oblit is looking to be a clear winner on single-target. Also, it's nice being able to farm water...
I'd still probably drop in a HB if KM proc's at the right time. I'll have to get some numbers from an actual raid.
Of course, in any fight with more than one target, which is all the trash and like half the bosses, the finger stays parked on HB.

This ability may not be used in raids, unless you have the frost talent which reduces chance to consume diseases by 100%, otherwise you will consume all diseases on the target, including other DK diseases!

if your dpsing PS is a MUST. sure it hits low as crap but it buffs your oblis and its a dot. also it smoothens out your rotation. think about it this way.. how can you use obliterate if you have spread FF with icy touch. so you have used 1 frost rune and u use an obliterate.. that uses a frost rune and an unholy. ur not getting off another OB because you only have 1 unholy rune left. blizz is trying to make it so DKs HAVE to put both diseases on for all specs.

After testing this ability with
Threat of Thassarian
, I can say with utmost confidence that obliterate strikes with the OFFHAND weapon first (in your combat log), and your MAINHAND weapon second.
I learned this due to the fact that I dual-wield two weapons of identical speed and damage range, and upon parsing my combat log on many fights obliterate ALWAYS opened with the lower amount of damage first and then the higher amount (offhand damage being weaker than mainhand damage).
Edit: And yes, my weapon skill with both weapons is the same as well.

I'm liking the direction this is going, so far it looks like Frost will be the hard-hitting spec in place of Blood, which means that I won't have to conform to the spec that EVERYONE's playing.

then with Talents, and the glyph we'll be looking at
160% * 1.3 = 208
208 *1.25 (glyph) = 260% weapon damage,
then if we keep T10 2pc bonus we'll have 286% weapon damage obliterates.
seems like our most brutal attack is about to become more brütal than ever.
Man I should've called my Death Knight Exodia :(

I noticed the damage increase on Obliterate, and frost strike to for that matter. But you got to remember that we now loose the
Tundra Stalker
and
Guile of Gorefiend
talents when these abilitys gets released.
So the damage increase is because of mainly those 2 talents beeing removed. You might hit harder, but the crit damage will most likely be about the same.

As of Patch 4.03, Obliterate doesn't consume diseases anymore, most likely given the change to the unholy rotation and the lack of blood dps. Blood Tanks can use this, however Death Strike still hits harder than Obliterate unless you spec into Annihilation and even then, it would only be used if you had ample heals, Death Strike's max talented damage for Blood being 351.9% (with 100 RP and Bone Shield active) compared to Obliterate's 285%. Unholy has had the cost of Scourge Strike reduced to 1 unholy as well as having Festering Strike which costs 1 frost and 1 blood added and benefiting from Reaping. That leaves Obliterate to Frost, though not as much so as in LK.
As for the high damage increase, remember we are loosing the +15% chance to crit from Rime and the additional 9% from Subversion along with 3% from Annihilation, a total of 27% crit as well as the extra 45% crit bonus, so crits would be 2.0 damage (2.06 with gem) as opposed to 2.45 (2.5235 with gem).
Also, runes fill up differently, now if you hit Obliterate twice in a row, say a 1 sec separation due to the haste from Icy Talons and Improved Icy Talons stacking, the difference between runes filling up is 1 sec. In cata, the first of each rune would fully refill before the second rune would start to refill, making it so you cant spam moves anymore. They hit harder but the end of spamming makes it so they are not OP in PVP burst.

Compared with the LK version, a 115.91% Weapon Damage increase, however keep in mind that Scourge Strike costs only one Unholy and with Festering Strike, Unholy DKs can spam Scourge Strike 6 times in a row, hitting for 267.15% WD each time (glyphed and with base mastery). Also, Killing Machine now affects Obliterate, letting Frost get more crits and thus more damage. As of 4.2, the nerf to Obliterate is 6.25% (285/304=.9375-1=-.0625/-100=6.25)

Edit: At least now, Frost is prevented from getting Necrosis and Blood-Caked Blade, which, combined does about 8% of your overall damage and disease damage is decreased without Tundra Stalker and Black Ice, thus explaining the extra Obliterate damage in Cata.
Edit #2: Showed the damage for Unholy and Blood
Edit #3: Added the +X damage and did massive recalculations, given the bonuses effect only the base damage and not the bonus' stacked
Edit #4: Removed the effects of Blood Frenzy/Savage Combat and Ferocious Inspiration/Arcane Empowerment because they effect all weapon damage of all classes, not just a DK's Obliterate
Edit #5: Updated for Patch 4.2 Nerf of 6.25%

Well between frost strike ignoring armor, and howling blast doing forty billion damage with a five mile range along with no longer having a cooldown and costing only one rune, I think they're still pretty freakin' good in pvp. Although compared to what some other classes have, howling blast is really the only thing Death Knights have that keeps them from being completely underpowered in comparison. I'm looking at you, casters-in-general. And Fury Warriors, before they got nerfed into the ground.

good post but you missed merciless combat. the final cata oblit wep dmg will be 367% if the target is at or below 35% health.Not calculating UH obliterate because Uh will not be using that.

Well let me got straight down to business, the math previously posted here on obliterate's damage is wrong!
Cata Obliterate (Frost):
160%--base
232%--45% Annihilation
264%--20% Glyph of Obliterate
284%--12.5% One Disease
304%--12.5% Two Diseases
328%--15% Frost Presence (counting Improved)
reason? miss reading of the tooltip,

damage is increased by 12.5% for each of your diseases on the target.
i have personally tested those results (those about when the damage boost from frost presence and diseases was applied), but one mystery remain how is the static bonus to damage calculated? i can say for sure that being or not in frost presence is calculated in the tooltip. but i've got a difference from 135% to 200% between my tooltip and what it should be (basically i go from weapon damage plus 934 to weapon damage plus 2545 instead of "plus 1542" . all i can say about it is that it's comming from either Annihilation or Obliterate's glyph (or both), or should i say probably that they are applied twice on the static part only (2545 = 165% of 1542) trough i don't know if it's limited to the tooltip or not. i used a lvl 80 draenei dk for those test.
so here is the correct formula for obliterate with the following variables for ease of reading (there's a simple version at the end)
Base = weapon damage
Anr = rank of Annihilation
Glyph = 0 without obliterate's glyph, 0.2 with obliterate's glyph
ND = number of your diseases on the target
FBD = 1 if your not in frost presence, 1.1 if you are, 1.12 if you are and have the improved frost presence , 1.15 if you are and have the improved frost presence
( Base * (1.6 * (1 + Anr *0.15 + Glyph) ) * ( 1 + ND * 0.125) * (FBD)
for those who don't wanna do the math here you go depending on what you have:
Annihilation rank 3, glyph, 2 diseases, IFP rank 2
Base * 3.795 or 379.5% of weapon damage
Annihilation rank 3, glyph, 1 diseases, IFP rank 2
Base * 3.4155 or 341.55% of weapon damage
Annihilation rank 3, glyph, no diseases, IFP rank 2
Base * 3.036 or 303.6% of weapon damage
those 2 are with an unholy spec
Annihilation rank 2, glyph, 3 diseases, FP
Base * 3.63 or 363% of weapon damage
Annihilation rank 3, glyph, 3 diseases, FP
Base * 3,993 or 399.3% of weapon damage
damn that's some quite the number Oo
well those are sample results if you're looking for one that is'nt here use the general formula in order to get it. Might of the Frozen Wastes will
probably
come in the same way as frost presence and diseases: multiplying the final result uping frost-2handers' obliterate to a whooping 425% of weapon damage,
but this needs confirmation

i think kagenotora's formula is pretty accurate
also if you are 2hand specced you can add:
(Base * (1,6 * (1+ Anr *0,15 + Glyph + 2HS) * ( 1 + ND *0.125) * (FBD)
2HS being the 12% bonus if you are speccing for 2hand Frost
( 1 + Anr *0,15 + Glyph + 2HS)
When you enter the values like this it always displays the outcome in the tooltip ingame.
Swapped the parameters and still was correct.
So your assumption should be correct.
However I am still confused about how the Bonus Damage is calculated.
I think the correct place in the formula would be here
((Base * (1,6 * ( 1+ Anr *0,15 + Glyph + 2HS))) +BonusDMG) * (1 + ND *0,125) * (FBD) * (BB)
2HS value depends on the points spend in the talent so either
0/.04/.08/.12 with 0/1/2/3 talent points spent.
BB ist brittle bones factor (1,04)
BonusDMG = Obliterated Bonus DMG (duh)
anyways if someone knows how BonusDMG is calculated let us know !

This is still one of the biggest damage dealers for a frost death knight, usually a rotation would go something like this: Diseases, Obliterate until all sets of runes are on cool down, then frost strike until all runic power is gone.

Hello there !
Sorry if it's a beginner's question, but there seems to be a 5-6 seconds cooldown on "Obliterate", after you've triggered it twice in a row, or just a second time very close to the first one, a lot like what happens with Paladin abilities (but those have 'charges' that need to be replenished), and it's not mentionned anywhere, either in the tooltips or in online descriptions. It quite prevents one from optimising his runic points output and spamming "Obliterate" like crazy... So, some sort of global cooldown or hidden mechanism ? Just being curious...
