Very much needed for warlocks too bad its only accessible at level 64
I dont mind the soulshard requeriment tho, I think the hp costs instead of mana is also inteligent by blizzard that way warlocks wont mind to do it instead of thinking twice if they should use mana or not in it

1) Remember it is for BASE health, not current health.
2) I have found it to be moderately helpful solo in some mob-dense areas, but VERY helpful in raids when paired with KTM threat meter. Using the threat meter with this ability will also reveal who has resisted and how close you are to taking aggro.
Very useful, but not terribly flashy. Solid spell for raids.

This spell works whenever you cast it, then it removes half your threat if it is not resisted (uses your spell hit rate). After 5 minutes, you can cast it again.
How I use it is I try to wait until about 60% boss health or after Doom hits (whatever comes first). After I use it, I can dps all I want without worrying about aggro

From my experience, the way this spell works is that it sends an AoE pulse to reduce the threat from all the enemies around you. What this also means is that if you use it around mobs which are in range, but who are not aggroed, this will actually aggro them. I'm not completely sure if priests' Fade is the same mechanic on the server side (the effects listed makes it seem like it's not), so it's interesting that Blizzard made it work like a totem pulse.

It has no duration, it's an instant 50% aggro reduction on everything within the aoe. That is, all of the cumulative threat you've built up until that point gets cut in half. Therefore it's almost pointless to use this early on. It can be used whenever, but I think you get the most out of it when you use a threat mod with it and use the ability as you're about to cross the aggro line (KLHThreatMeter). Note that the mod doesn't work unless other people in the raid/group are also running it, and isn't 100% accurate, but it's very good.

Be carefull....if the tank/other dps don't have a threatmeter, and you cast this after pulling aggro to dump it...
In SL I used this after I pulled aggro. Im slow reaction wise so the tank had already taunted by the time i got to the button (Im an afflictlock and had alll my dots on teh boss at the time, was worred i'd be on aggro again after a few ticks), the cost of casting the spell killed me.
Unlike Life Tap, It appears that this spell doesn't check to make sure you have enough hp to actually cast it..or else it was a bug DX

The tooltip no longer says that it takes 8% of base HP, but that is still the case.
This spell can be used in conjunction with a trinket such as The Hypnotists Watch (quest reward):

Beautiful spell. One of the best Warlocks got in the expansion, in my Warlocky opinion. Before this we didn't have anything we could do if we became threat capped (except Soulstone ourselves, then Hellfire suicide).

This is one of the greatest additions to a locks spell list in BC. To get the most out of Soul Shatter on a boss encounter, make sure you don't use it too soon, don't burst a target down before the tank has had time to build decent threat, and then hit you're oh-^&*!-button, as you'll find yourself threat-capped again in no time. I like to wait a good 20% into the duration of the fight before using this, using it at this time gives the tank a huge lead in threat comparable to you, and you can pretty much go all out from this point in most fights.
It's also important to use it just before you think you'll pull agro, as the spell is resistible, although i'm yet to wipe a raid because of it.
Just a note, this spell is resisted on a mob by mob basis, so on an aoe pull, you've got a fair chance 1 mob may resist your SS and you die anyway.

Keep in mind that those items are pretty useless, they're worth less than a single Shadow Bolt worth of threat.
A single Shadow Bolt's threat is more than enough to pull aggro. These items are situational? Yes. Useless? Not a chance.

50% threat reduction is incredible, and for only a Soul Shard and 8% of your base health at that!
8% might sound like a lot, but if you're equipping your Warlock properly (that is, with almost enough Stamina to rival a tank), it's so trivial you won't even see your health bar get smaller.

Pretty meh spell. Not useful at all in any of the current raid content. Maybe it will see a use when new content is released, but as of right now, it's very skippable.

I'm somewhat surprised that this spell hasn't been looked at. When comparing pure dps classes (classes that have no option to spec for healing and/or tanking) I see a glaring deficiency in the warlock version of agro reducing abilities.
Mages - Invisibility (3 minute cooldown)
Rogues - Vanish (3 minute cooldown)
Warlocks - Soulshatter (
5 minute cooldown
)

What is really annoying is that they give locks the ability to do the most DPS out of all classes, but give us completely hopeless threat reduction, that we have to cap our DPS to stop pulling aggro off the tank and getting smashed in the face. All other high DPS classes have really good forms of threat reduction, which reduce threat by 100%, while all locks can do is reduce threat by 50% and IT CAN BE RESISTED!

Indeed, I need to watch frequently my aggro as a warlock DPS, hell the 20% standard threat reduction ain't sufficient, if blizzard gives mages 40% reduction in arcane why not also for warlocks? Or make the warlock spells do less threat, but come on you would expect this to be better then any other threat reduction spells.
It got 5 minute cooldown, the longest of all, it got 50% threat reduction, hell all others got 100% in most cases, and it cost a soul shard, while all other abilities cost few to nothing. I do say that this is one of the most useless spell ever in the game, not only is the cost and cooldown too high, the effect is just also to low to be even considered using it.

Yeah, it's pretty bad. Feign Death is now down to 25 seconds too, and you can even shave off another five seconds with a minor glyph. And it doesn't require a reagent. And when
that
doesn't work, you can still pop Deterrence, which makes you invincible to all direct damage for five seconds, every 90 seconds, also no reagent. The negligible downside is that you can't attack for those five seconds.
I used to play a warlock, and I took a look at this ability recently, and I'm shocked that it hasn't been buffed yet. I just assumed that they would have reduced the cooldown by now, at least.

I never said that you mustn't use it, I only said that compared with other thread reduction spells, soulshatter is the most useless one ever. You can't deny that fact. Besides it is better to redesign it then or something or give warlocks a alternative threat reduction spell, frankly, I like the effect better if it has no cooldown at all but still cost shard and that you can do it during casting. That way all aggro issues should be solved for warlocks. Considering you got 28 shards that is.

I honestly don't see what the problem is. Yeah, it's imbalanced (especially considering that our other "stop attacking me" spells keep getting nerfed because of a few whiners in PvP....), but I haven't had to use Soulshatter with a good tank in... forever.

As of 3.2, soulshatter cooldown will be reduced to 3 minutes, down from 5 minutes.
Now it will be easier to get in that second soulshatter before adding Drain Soul into your rotation at 25%, or Soulfire into your rotation at 35% (for demo locks).

Since patch 3.0.2 this spell is no longer affected by Spell Hit Chance so in fact it always hits.
To quote Ghostcrawler:
"
As far as we know, Soulshatter always hits. It isn't tied to any other talent, such as Suppression. It would still hit if you had zero +hit on your gear. This was changed at some point after LK launched.

Warlocks have talents to reduce threat, Hunters dont, which makes MD and Feint death very important.
The cd have been reduced to 3 mins. During the average icc-boss-fight you should be able to pop it twice at least.

Anyone know what the plans are for this spell in Cata?
I can see this keeping it's shard cost, as it really is an 'oh !@#$!' button, and if it lost it's shard cost it would simply be spammed on every cooldown.
Alternatively, it would be cool to see it retain it's current functionality, and have added functionality when used with soulburn.
IE: Soulburn + Soulshatter = complete agro reset (like feign death or vanish)
Personally, i'd like to see it keep it's soul shard cost, as it promotes warlocks being a bit more conservative instead of just smashing all their buttons at once and having an agro drop whenever it's off CD.

I would take a glyph that reduced the cooldown of this ability in a heart beat. I am always pulling aggro, especially with the Mannaroth's Fury talent.

As of 5.0, this now converts to
when

). It does *not* share a CD with Provocation, so you can hit tank mode, pull aggro, soulstone the regular tank, drop out of tank mode, then soulshatter to give the tank his threat back.

For those wondering why warlocks are the only pure dps who can't leave combat with their aggro drop, it's because the other pures had that for wipe recovery with stuff like goblin jumper cables. Warlocks already had soulstones for that.
