However, consider this: As a replacement for our
main strike
, it must be balanced such that it is at least comparable to Scourge Strike on Patchwerk-style fights, if not outright stronger (due to
精通:恐惧之刃
scaling and boss armor - 100% of this is Shadow damage, unlike Scourge Strike) to justify passing up the other talents in its tier. With the lower cooldown on
爆发
and talents such as
感染之爪
, this means that instead of dealing the paltry amount of ranged damage we can shell out between Icy Touch and Death Coil, we now can rapidly swap to and burst down approaching adds (which given our limited mobility, have long been the bane of the DPS DK's existence on fights like
基尔罗格·死眼
or
烛龙
), or aid ranged during encounters where the target is otherwise unreachable as or dangerous to melee (such as the infernal adds on
玛诺洛斯
, or literally any flying adds ever). And remember, skills marked "Replaces" inherit the same bonuses as the ability they upgrade, so it benefits from
诸界之灾
, and we'll be able to turn this into a full Howling Blast when
枯萎凋零
is up so long as
you
stand in the circle - no more worrying about a tank dragging the crowd out of the field.
Most importantly, given the Death Knight's notorious lack of mobility (amplified by the clunky nature of Wraith Walk), this means that we suffer a lower penalty than other melee classes in the numerous scenarios where we're forced out of the boss' immediate range by various fight mechanics (ie "get out of raid before you explode"), or when the target rapidly dashes away as they've been prone to throughout WoD. Where possible, it's usually better to hold runes for when you can precede a cast with a
脓疮打击
to keep Wounds popping and RP flowing, but if you're about to be rune-capped and are too far to hit FS, it's better to keep cycling resources rather than wasting them.
Short version is, this could very well be one of the go-to talents in any encounter where you have at least precious seconds of not smacking the boss, just on utility alone. Of course, this will still be dependent on the amount of downtime the fight actually has versus the other talents in a Patchwerk scenario.
Oh, plus it'll be hella convenient for openers in open-world PVE (which Legion is seriously pushing), and the lack of cast time will probably make us a nightmare if we aren't locked down in PVP (especially given our standard weakness to kiting - something this may let us pull off, depending on your talents and target).
Only disappointing thing about this ability is the aesthetic. Presently it just uses the Scourge Strike animation, with no spell effect. It also has an oddly generic name, "Clawing Shadows"; you'd think we'd have a better name for a ranged attack addition from the large database of Scourge enemies back in Wrath, like
饱受折磨
. Maybe a shadow lightning strike, with a chain effect or conic blast from within D&D. Would be cool.
