As of patch 3.1 this pet also has a small chance of dropping off of Sprite Darter mobs. Note that only Horde players can attack the mobs.

And guess where everyone and their auntie will be just as soon as patch 3.1 hits, trying to get this one. I've wanted this pet most of all of them which was awful being a Horde player so I'm glad we're going to get it.. Only I'll still be waiting until all the aggressive pet collectors back off the area.
about time we're given a chance at this one

I'm Horde and have been wanting this pet for ages. Now that they are attainable for us I decided to head straight to Feralas with the 3.1 release. I got the pet after farming for only about 10 min, but that doesn't mean the drop rate is high. I most likely just got lucky. Since there isn't a confirmed drop rate yet, I would only
assume
it's about the same as the other whelpling pets which is 1/1000, but i can't confirm that. Good luck to all you Horde out there. It was pretty busy (6 other players farming while i was). Also note that when the pet drops it is soulbound upon pick up and will have an egg icon.

I have been working on getting all the pets the game has, I'm up to 73, when the patch hit last night, I headed down to farm this guy, had about 4 other people also farming for it. Mine dropped in less then 5 minutes and 10 kills! I was shocked. Got on my alt for giggles, and she also got one within minutes. Not sure if that was super luck or not. Trying again on one more alt, then we will know for sure!
Happy hunting to all out there trying for this little guy!

Seems like everyone has been getting it within about 10 - 20 min of farming.
3 hours so far, and still no luck =(
edit: don't know if this matters or not, but I spent 3 hours grinding these guys while also having the quest for the iridescent wings (figured I might as well get some ancient quests done for the other achievement while I was out there).
After I turned in the quest, I got the egg in about 20 min of farming.
I think that the egg doesn't drop while on the quest "A New Cloak's Sheen."

69/47 in Feralas is where I found a field of them...gosh I hate smacking these darlings...but I don't hate it enough not to do it to get my very own. ;0)
This is near the area where the Grimtotems are gathering the sprites for the Alliance quest...and no, you can't target the ones in the cage...this is not like shooting sprites in a barrel.)
I did a target macro (I have lev 72 ret BE pally - so this if for my fellow Horde pally buddies):
/target sprite darter
/cast hand of reckoning
then I just hit Judgement of light, rinse & repeat as you see each little yellow name light up around the field
I got mine after 28 minutes, 53 dead sprites (a moment of silvence for them please) & the following loot:
5 small flame sac - trade goods, sells for 2s 50c each to vendor
7 ripped wing webbing - grey item, sells for 1s 75c each to vendor
3 forked tongue - grey item, sells for 2s 28c each to vendor
1 aquamarine - gem, sells for 10s to a vendore or average 2-3 gold in AH on my server (Norgannon)
153 silver
and too much copper to count up
not a bad way to spend 28 minutes....Hope you all get your very own sprite, too...he's too cute!

I was Doing the quest A New Cloak's Sheen and when I was done and selling all the grey items to the shop I discovered the egg in my bags. I didn't even know it was an available pet to get and was happily surprised, although I wish I could have sold it on the auction house since it is soulbound. I'm not sure what the drop rate is but I only killed enough Sprite Darters to complete the quest and I got the egg so don't rule this pet out if you are a collector.

I can also confirm the droprate is now rather high... I was questing here on an alt when I got the pet and was rather frustrated/happy at the same time because I remember spending hours farming these on my main for the pet, and it dropped for my alt after like 4 kills! Coming here and reading the droprate has increased, I decided to hop on my main and try again.... after maybe 10 minutes, it dropped for her, too!
Now if I can just get the beacons to drop for my main for the mechanical chicken :(

To all those reporting finds after just a few kills...
And everyone else with a very lucky RNG fairy standing by them...
It's now patch 4.1. I have killed/looted 674 Sprite Darters. There's not a single other person out here competing for my pool. No egg yet.
I use the Bunny Hunter add-on to track kills and drop probabilities. This add-on works by calculating the chance that you "should have seen" the drop by whatever number of kills at the reported rate. I have been at 99.9% (it will never reach 100% until you actually do see the item) for about 100 kills now.
Like many other comments on this page I would like to reiterate that luck factors greatly into drop rates (that's the point of RNG). Don't get discouraged if you don't find the pet after X kills; I don't know how some people have so much luck up their sleeves, but just because you don't share in their good fortune doesn't mean you won't win eventually.

I got mine after 3,256 kills. I read here that they were more easily farmed in the Grimtotem camps because the mobs are closely congregated together, but unfortunately for me these guys leapt forward when they died, so I couldn't loot them where I saw them. I had to log out after each AoE kill, which made farming them too tasking. I opened a ticket, and a GM told me that it was a known issue and that Blizzard was working on it.
I switched over to farming other types of mobs for a long while, but after that yielded no results, I went back to killing the Grimtotem guys. After each camp, I would log out to reset the bodies and log back in to loot them. After three or four camps, I finally got my little hatchling. It was a pain in the ass, but it was worth it. A guy on my server even clapped and did a little dance when he saw it, which was nice because someone else recognized how annoying farming this pet is.

The above was written while I was still under the impression that the Sprite Darter Egg dropped from killing Sprite Darters only, at a chance of about 1/200 (patch 3.2). I have since learned that it is a rare zone drop and changed my farming methods.
At this point in time I have killed 26, 253 mobs in Feralas. Most of those have been Grimtoten Marauders (about 19k), but I also re-did all the quests in Feralas, and I make occasional sweeps of Yeti caves and Ogre camps (due to high population and spawn rate.
Somewhere around 10k kills in the zone, I ticket a GM and addressed the concerns found recently on this page that Horde characters have not been able to obtain this pet since patch 4.1. The following points are derived from our conversation:
1) The Sprite Darter Egg still exists as an item in the game
2) It is a "extremely" rare zone drop in Feralas
3) It is equally obtainable by both Horde and Alliance players
4) There are no mobs in Feralas that DO NOT have this item on their loot table. The exact quotation was, "If it drops loot at all, it has a chance to drop this item."
Seeing as I have killed nearly as many Grimtotem Marauders as the Wowhead database has records for, I am starting to get very discouraged and skeptical of the GM's assurances. In 27k kills, Wowhead reports finding this item SIX times. I have killed 20k and have found this item ZERO times. If I reach 30k kills, still without the egg, I will petition a GM and demand a review of the loot table, availability, and fairness of this item.
So consider yourself EXTREMELY LUCKY that you got this pet after 3,256 kills. I am so frustrated. I can't believe my luck!

For those still looking for this pet by focusing on the grimtotems and the sprite darters, just found mine on a highborne poltergeist. I wasn't searching for this pet and had only been questing in feralas for about 30 minutes so I'm guessing by previous posts that I had some rare luck. But to those who are looking for this pet and havent found it on those other drops, don't give up! Good Luck!

Something incredibly weird just happened to me.
I was in Thunder Bluff, and interacted with this guy (
布尔鲁格
) after logging in. In his inventory he was selling a Sprite Darter Egg (1/2000 Feralas zone drop, apparently). I purchased it, and closed the interaction window. I was able to learn the pet. After reopening it, it was no longer available for purchase, so I assumed it was because I'd already bought it. I summoned a friend to me and he said he wasn't selling anything except the pet leash.
Maybe people should start camping this guy on their servers? Maybe I found some insanely rare bug? I don't know. Definitely worth trying if you're after this pet, though.

I was using my Alliance character to quest in Feralas, I was killing the Woodpaws, and about the 4th or 5th Gnoll (not sure if it's relevant, but it was a trapper) that I killed dropped this item. After reading everyone else's posts on this, I'm amazed that it happened the way it did!
As far as exhausting farming, I hear ya, I was trying to farm the Emerald whelpling, spent over an hour killing whelps, and nothing... I know that's nowhere near the amount of effort some of you have put into finding this companion.
I wish all of you the kind of luck I had in finding this cute lil critter!

This dropped for me while I was farming Heavy Leather in Feral Scar Vale, Feralas, off of a Feral Scar Yeti. It's probably a good thing I wasn't farming for it - as it dropped after I'd already accumulated 215 Heavy leather, and 84 Thick Leather. So somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 or so Yeti?
At any rate, I just thought I'd add my experience, and to confirm that it does still drop, and I see no reason why either faction couldn't get it.

I received my Sprite Darter before 4.3 so I wasn't exactly looking for one. So when I opened my bags to check for the Emerald Whelping, I was surprised to see the Darter. If there are 2 companion pets that can be farmed in Feralas, I suggest farming the most logical spot - up around the edge of Jademir Lake in the northern section of Feralas. You can start the long grind for the Whelp and the Darter. That is, if you need both.

This RNG is madness inducing...I'm going to share a story of such impossible bad luck that I honestly felt like smashing things...
So there I am, farming my blood elf's behind off, I'd got to around 15k kills and still no Sprite...it was beginning to get on my nerves.
Next day, two guild mates (husband and wife) are on their way to Dire Maul on their alts and one aggro's something, kills it and BOOM...Sprite Darter Hatchling.
Annoyingly I gratz him, and then his spouse complains that she never gets any nice loot like that..they aggro 4 orges and some hyenas on the entrance to Dire Mauls Ruins...and another Sprite Darter drops...then a 3rd one as they are looting...
The odds of this are so stupidly impossible I can't even fathom >.<
All I can say if you're farming this is, don't give up, keep at it and if the Gods of RNG are with you, you'll get it.
*EDIT* Finally got this killing a single sprite darter on my way to an archaeology dig xD....

In the current MOP BETA, the pet journal has flavor text for most of the pets. Sprite Darter Hatchling's is as follows: "These adorable critters love snuggling with their owners after a long day of brutal, bloody battle."
Listed as a "Dragonkin" type pet, his one attack so far is "Breath".

Farming tips for this pet:
If you look up
精龙的蛋
, you'll see that it's dropped from almost any mob in Feralas along with a rare NPC in Swamp of Sorrows, however the drop rates are 0.06 or less accross the board.
I find the best place to farm this pet is in New Thallanaar (west of Camp Mojache), and kill the
恐怖图腾掠夺者
s. They arent on the top of the charts as far as the drop rates are concerned, but these mobs have a VERY fast re-spawn rate, I was one shotting them with AoE spells and they were still respawning faster than I could kill them all, so no time was wasted. Not to mention these guys drop Slik Cloth, and they have an extensive drop table of random world drops which could come in handy for transmogrification so you can still be rather productive during the hours you'll spend farming this. I managed to get 921 silk cloth, and 43 different green world drops, and 2 blue ones.
This item is a BoP so make sure you are using the toon you want to have the pet to farm the pet. Also make sure you have plenty of bag space because you'll be killing ALOT of these.
First thing you'll want to do is get the Rarity addon, you can set this to play a sound when the item finally drops. This is rather important because you stand a good chance at missing the drop, and could go on farming for hours before you realise that you've had it in your bags all that time.
If you are Horde, you'll want to set your Hearthstone to Camp Mojache, it's not far from the farming site, and you'll have access to a mailbox, an innkeeper, and a repair vendor.
If you are Alliance, your closest town with the services mentioned above will be Feathemoon Stronghold on the west coast of Feralas, so you'll want to set your Hearthstone there.
It's also advisable to have a bank alt ready to receive your harvests as your bags will fill up rather fast.
The above tips will help to expedite the process as much as possible. It took me about 6 hours using this method, so you'll want to get comfortable. Basically, just grind your best AoE spells to kill the Grimtotem Marauders in New Thalanaar. If you play Horde, avoid targeting and killing the Night elf NPCs in the area because alerts will go off in general chat, and you'll be flagged for PvP. But you can use AoE spells to kill the Marauders without killing the night elves, as long as you don't target and attack them, but once you attack them, your AoE spells will harm them until you are no longer flagged for PvP. However, flagged or not, the Night Elves will still attack you, but it's nothing to worry about because any 85 can withstand the damage they deal, and no 85 ally gaurds spawn in the area.
If your AoE spells aren't effective enough to kill them at a fast rate, then you can use this macro to avoid targeting the night elf NPCs.
/target Grimtotem Marauder
Avoiding PvP is somewhat important because ally will get alerts and you could get ganked which of course can slow down the process. Even if you're on a PvP server, it may help to do this so as not to alert ally players in general chat, and attract allys looking for someone to gank.
Once you've killed enough of these to fill your bags, just hearth to your nearest faction town, send the drops to your bank alt with the mail box, sell your grays to a vendor, and repeat. It also doesn't hurt to return on foot considering the item drops from almost every mob in Feralas.
I would also like to add, that this is a very optimal time to farm for this along with other random world drops. With a new expansion just around the corner, getting gear and stuff is becoming less important, and you really never know what blizzard might decide to do with things like this to make it even harder to get.
Either way, it's worth it, and I'm glad that it's BoP because it shows that you've earned it either through through perseverance or luck (the former being most likely). IMO, this is one of the best pets in the game, and it just goes to show you that the best things that WoW has to offer cannot be obtained with gold, points, or money.

I saw this on the Auction House last night for under 2k, I immediately hit buyout, and got this then sold it for 10k, a tidy profit:) I wanted to keep it but I wanted a new mount more. I reckon with the new cages coming on, there will be a lot more of these about, as old players who played in Vanilla were able to pick up one of these from an easy quest, and may in some cases just sell it on for a few thousand.
However, if you are trying to farm this, good luck, having killed thousands of mobs in Ferelas in the past, I gave up on it, being a world drop it may be in the 1/10,000 drop rate, but that's of course speculation, but I'm sure if you keep trying you'll get it! Good luck!

I apologize in advance if this is irrelevant and understand if others feel compelled to rate it down for this reason; It's just my story of how things had turned out with regard to this pet that really warmed my heart.
I'd been playing WoW since it first came out, and warcraft 3 before that; I'd always loved the fey dragons. I was so excited to learn back in classic WoW that there was a quest chain back then (no longer available) that could be done to ultimately get a sprite darter hatchling as a pet. I'd been very sad to learn however that it was alliace-only, as I'd always played horde (for fellow veteran wc3 players, you'd realize the treachery in me liking fey dragons, in that they'd been an alliance unit back in wc3! - but even as they were kicking my awesome orc behind back then, I couldn't help thinking they were cool).
Well, many years ago back in classic, I had made an alliance character just to try it out, and leveled it enough so I could do the quest chain for the sprite darter hatchling. I'd long since forgotten all about it and went on to caring about other things in WoW, vaguely aware it was possible to farm the hatchling as a low-chance drop but never having tried it. I'd not even realized until recently that in Cataclysm they'd done away with the alliance-only quest chain through which I'd once obtained it. When just before MoP they made it possible for pets to be shared account-wide, for the first time since classic I was able to use my sprite darter hatchling that long ago I'd acquired on my alliance toon, now on my horde characters. Folks, I'd waited eight years for this, and now I can even use it to battle against pets of alliance players. For the horde! =)

I had this item a long time ago, it dropped while I was leveling a character not on my main realm. I eventually deleted the character and I'm now kicking myself in the butt because it would have been available to all of my characters now. I've tried farming it up again on several occasions with no luck and I've officially given up. Should it drop while I'm just leveling other battle pets I'll be happy, but suspect I'll never live to see it again.

When I was a young lad and devilsaurs roamed the land...
I too was an Alliance Adventurer who journeyed across the ocean to Kalimdor (drum beat) to seek out this little pet. My first sight of Taneris came from the saddle of my +60% Black Stallion, obtained at great cost from the stables of Menethil Harbor when I came of age at 45. I had left the goblin race track behind me, disappearing into the great salt flats, and traveled ever southward into unknown and possibly deadly lands, when from within a narrow pass between great cliffs I beheld ... the most unique and wondrous city of all my travels ... GADGETZAN.
Anyway, ya, from Goblin Race Track and Gadgetzan where the quest chain started to Feralas and back again. Long time of wondering if it was really worth the trouble. My first toon ever was deleted in a drunken haze then restored almost 2 years later by a Bliz help support who was like "by the way, I see this guy..." and now my Orc has this pet. What a strange journey its been little guy.

I
finally
got mine today. Here is what I learned:
My first technique was to farm the
Sprite Darters
(North West of Camp Mojache) and the
Frayfeathers
(west of The Ruins Of Isildien) Each of these have a .03% chance to drop the
精龙的蛋
but they are spaced very far apart and it was taking a very long time.
This week I decided to farm the
The Emerald Whelpling
which drops off of the
Noxious Whelps
which ALSO have a .01% chance to drop the
Sprite Darter Egg
I noticed that the Noxious Whelps are fairly close together and they respawn more quickly than the other NPCs so I started making rounds around the lake. Sometimes there were many people farming in the main area but I found that there were fewer people- if any- on the Eastern side of the lake. The Welps respawn so quickly that usually by the time I got to one end they had already respawned behind me.
I used a druid and set quick keybinds to go from flying to feral (even though I was specced resto to help with the mana costs of shapeshifting so often and so quickly) I would one shot, loot, and fly to the next very very quickly.
This way I obtained BOTH the Tiny Emerald Whelpling and the Sprite Darter Egg in a matter of a few hours. Granted these hours were spaced over a few days.
I didnt use it but I have read that the addon Bunny Hunter is helpful for keeping track of your kills and the % rate you are at for a successful drop.
Good luck! This is the cutest pet in the game :D Go get yours!
