This mechanic is very similar to the 3rd skill of
Berzerker
.
Check out the other rogue ability added in the 5.2 PTR,
. Similar to
Aluna's "Deja Vu"
or
Silhouette's "Shadow"
. Could also be argued this is similar to Monk's

I like the "kind of" AoE potential, here. Picture a dungeon trash pack of the kind in Grim Batol. A small pack that just won't be instantly blown away by a Mage's Arcane Explosion. They will need a good few seconds to kill them and they won't all go down at the same time:
Mark for Death -> finisher (on a macro as MfD doesn't have a GCD). Killing blow from whomever, doesn't matter -> cooldown reset. Target next mob -> MfD -> finisher and so on.
But as a talent it poses that typical Mists question: do I take this talent or a different one. For this reason Mists is maintaining my interest in the mechanics of various classes.

An interesting talent for battlegrounds. It's fun to keep a look out for opponents who are about to die. If your team is good, free combo points are everywhere. And if you're fighting ungeared enemies, you become a killing machine.
I do miss Shuriken Toss, especially against hunters and mages. That's the tradeoff with this talent -- easier to fight melee, harder to pressure ranged without Shuriken.

Here's my view on PvE, which is primarily Anticipation vs MfD.
Anticipation will, regardless of the short cooldown on MfD, be the preferred talent in a single target fight. Take note that Combat fairs best without Anticipation yet also gains the least from MfD. Assassination and Subtlety are hard to play without Anticipation, and the lost combo points due to crits (Assassin) and HaT procs (Sub) will probably not outweigh the incidental instant 5cp from MfD. Granted, it does give you ~30 free cp on an average fight timer.
This talent however shines extremely on fights with regularly dying adds, and the spec played should hardly matter.
With the recent buff to Envenom, Assassination becomes perfectly playable on switching fights given you can use this on any dying add and gain a lot of excess energy from Venomous Wounds and leftover Rupture.
Of course Combat is already viable switching, this just adds a free Eviscerate.
Sub might even gain the most from this due to instant 5cp Ruptures and SV, Ambush and Backstab away and targets should die quickly giving more MfD.
In pure AoE, spamming MfD on lowest health targets + Crimson Tempest seems to increase rogue AoE by a lot on trash packs.
For all specs and situations counts, if targets are really low on health, just spamming MfD + Envenom/Eviscerate should be very powerful to keep MfD rolling.
Practice may still differ and I think the best application is not fully known yet. It does however open up plenty of abilities to keep combo points rolling and even the easier rogue specs become hard to play when adds are involved, which is a good thing imo.

After its application you will start with 5 Combo Points,
After 20 seconds you will lose 1 Combo Point.
Every subsequent 10 seconds you will lose 1 more Combo Point.
So without applying any extra points it will be as follows
60sec 5CBP
40sec 4 CBP
30sec 3 CBP
20sec 2 CBP
10sec 1 CBP
0sec 0 CBP
Hope its useful for rolling bones as late as possible before a pull. etc.

Note that this ability is modified by Deeper Stratagem, which means it will generate 6 combo points instead of 5 when using also using the Deeper Stratagem talent.

to the target. If you switch targets you will not get your 5 points, they stick to the target you casted it on

Great ability, but
the animation is so annoying.
You just stop, point at the enemy, and sloooowly, eventually, you get back to your rotation and slashing animation. And if you're fighting multiple weaker adds, you spend 90% of the fight just pointing at them.
Please PLEASE change the animation! It just feels bad to see my hacky slashy rogue not fighting, but
pointing.

cant beleive they removed this talent. Its been a rogue staple for years. I loved it...... now they are pushing shadowstep and shadowdance on rogues
