Talents are one of the core character systems in World of Warcraft, giving players the option to customize their character by choosing different abilities.
In this guide, we will explain how all Retribution Paladin talents work and what are the best Retribution Paladin talent builds to use in , including specialized content like Raids and Mythic+. We also highlight all the best uses for each talent, so you can confidently pick the right talent to use for every situation, as well as the best Honor Talents to use while you are enjoying the bonuses from War Mode.
Note that in order to change talents, you must be out of combat and either be in a rested zone, like a major city or inn, or under the effects of

Talents impact many different aspects of your gameplay, including the optimal way to use your abilities. In turn, they also can be dependant on context, with different activities, like Mythic+ and PvP, having different talents preferences from Raiding. You can check more information on those below.

Best Retribution Paladin Talents
These are all generically good talents that should work well regardless of Covenant choice. They'll also be fine on either single target or AoE.

, most talents are relatively locked in for Retribution. The

The damage talent choices here are all pretty straightforward.

- Increases the rate of your auto attacks, which increases

procs.

- Doubles

's proc chance.

- You already have very high

from the tier set, which makes

a better choice overall.

- Strongest AoE option in the row and also does very good single target damage as well.
The utility options in these rows are mostly encounter dependent and personal preference, so if you want to deviate from the suggestions feel free to.
Although

are better options with tier, before you get it

will generally be better choices.
Retribution Paladin Talent Breakdown
Tier 1 (Level 15) Talent for Ret Paladin
狂热
-
审判
empowers you, causing your next 3 auto attacks to occur 30% faster and deal additional Holy damage.
狂热
synergizes very well with the new tier set bonuses,
尘归尘
and
尘归尘
, since

procs off of auto attacks and

directly increases the rate of auto attacks. It's also the only option in this talent row that has an impact on AoE, since

both only affect one target. For Kyrian,

is especially strong since

both proc stacks of it as well. However, since

has a 0.5s internal cooldown,

is also not a talent you especially need to play around to gain benefit from - you'll simply gain damage naturally as

procs more often. That said, it does require relatively high uptime to gain maximum benefit from it, so if there are long periods where you can't melee a boss it'll lose a lot of value.

. This is a decent single target option for non-Kyrian covenants, but falls behind

significantly with the tier set bonuses. Since it doesn't work with

, this talent is a lot less generally useful as well. When using

, don't worry too much about tracking the buff's duration. Most
圣殿骑士的裁决
s will naturally be buffed anyway, and you shouldn't be delaying using generators to try to maintain it.

- After 8 seconds, your target suffers a large amount of Holy damage plus 20% of the damage they took from your abilities during that 8 seconds.
Although
处决宣判
was the default choice for most of Shadowlands, this won't be the best option in most situations once you acquire the new tier set bonuses. It does still have some uses though, in particular for Kyrian and Necrolord:
处决宣判
is still the highest burst option on this row. If a fight requires single target burst damage over ~10 seconds,
处决宣判
will be a good choice.
Since
处决宣判
does all of its damage within a short period, if uptime is hard to maintain during a fight, it could be better to use
处决宣判
to compress your damage into a smaller window between mechanics.
处决宣判
has two parts to it: the base damage, and the accumulated damage you do during its duration. The base damage is affected by Mastery, Versatility, and Strength, (not Crit since the ability itself can't Crit,) but the accumulated damage isn't affected by any of these. Mastery is applied to the base damage when
处决宣判
is cast, but Strength and Versatility are only calculated when the ability actually hits 8 seconds later.

's debuffs also apply to

's base damage, applied when
处决宣判
is cast. The accumulated damage portion is only based on the damage you do to that target, not all damage you do, and it's calculated before modifiers to damage taken like

Tier 2 (Level 25) Talent for Ret Paladin
正义之火
- Reduces the cooldown of

by 15% and grants it a 15% chance to reduce the cost of your next Holy Power spender by 1.
正义之火
was already a generally unused talent, but especially with the tier set bonuses, there's really no situation that it would be useful in. You shouldn't be using this talent in any situation.
愤怒之剑

procs 100% more often, and increases the damage dealt by your next
公正之剑
by 25% when its cooldown is reset.
Since it effectively doubles the value of both parts of the tier set bonuses,
愤怒之剑
should always be taken in every situation.
战争艺术
has a base proc chance of 12% because of
战争艺术
, so
愤怒之剑
doubles it to 24%.
战争艺术
's procs aren't exactly independent - it won't ever proc on back to back melee hits, but the overall average will still be 24% per melee. If
灰烬觉醒
is reset with
尘归尘
instead of
公正之剑
, the 25% buff to the next
公正之剑
won't be applied.

has a 15% chance to make your next

cost no Holy Power and deal 25% extra damage.

was a decent option for extra AoE, but is now behind
愤怒之剑
on any target number with the tier set bonuses.
Tier 3 (Level 30) Talent for Ret Paladin
制裁之拳
- Each Holy Power spent reduces the cooldown of
制裁之锤
by 2 seconds.
Pretty much every Holy Power spender costs 3, so
制裁之拳
effectively reduces the cooldown of
制裁之锤
by 6 seconds per spender. This is a decent default option for PvE content, since having access to
制裁之锤
more frequently for Mythic+ or the occasional add that can be stunned in Raids is usually pretty useful.
忏悔
- incapacitates a target for 1 minute after a short cast.
忏悔
is only usable against some enemy types: Humanoids, Demons, Undead, Dragonkin, and Giants. It's not as widely applicable as the other CC options in this talent row, but can be useful if you need an extra long duration CC and the enemy fits the types.
盲目之光
- Disorient all enemies within 10 yards for up to 6 seconds. Non-Holy damage breaks the effect.
Most of the time this will get broken immediately, since other players will be doing non-Holy damage as well. That said, it's still useful as an AoE interrupt, since any casts will be stopped by the application of the disorient effect. This is mostly useful for Mythic+, since Ret can't otherwise prevent spellcasting by multiple enemies at once.
Tier 4 (Level 35) Talent for Ret Paladin
不败之魂
- Reduces the cooldown of
圣疗术
,
圣盾术
and
复仇之盾
by 30%.
This talent is technically a damage increase, since extra
复仇之盾
casts will improve your damage. However, it's not necessarily always worth taking, since there's plenty of situations where
骑手
is a better choice.
不败之魂
is usually best in situations where mobility isn't an issue and the survivability increase is relevant.

has 2 charges.
Retribution usually struggles a bit with mobility.
骑手
helps a lot to increase the frequency that you can use
神圣马驹
for situations that mobility is required.
圣光骑甲
increasing the duration of
神圣马驹
also helps a lot here, since you can often use one
神圣马驹
charge in situations where you might otherwise need two.

- Reduces physical damage taken by 35% for 10 seconds, and deals a small amount of damage to attackers.
This usually isn't a relevant talent, since most of the damage you take in PvE is magic rather than physical. This makes it a pretty niche talent, but it is still useful in the small number of situations where you are taking a lot of physical damage. The damage reflection portion is pretty much useless in PvE, since you should never be getting melee attacked by enemies as a DPS.
Tier 5 (Level 40) Talent for Ret Paladin
神圣意志
- Holy Power spenders have a 15% chance to make your next Holy Power spender cost no Holy Power and deal 20% extra damage and healing.
With the tier set,
神圣意志
gets significantly better since you already have very high
炽天使
uptime, and is usually the best option in this row. Each proc's chance is independent, so it can be pretty random whether you happen to get a lot of procs or none at all.
神圣意志
is a pretty passive talent option - you won't need to go out of your way rotationally to use it properly.
神圣复仇者
- Triples your Holy Power generation for 20 seconds.
Tripling Holy Power generation sounds nice, but Holy Power generation isn't actually that hard to come by currently for Ret.
灰烬觉醒
and
公正之剑
both generate a lot, and reset a lot due to
尘归尘
and
愤怒之剑
too.
神圣复仇者
also works pretty poorly with Ret's other cooldowns, since
复仇之怒
is a 2 minute cooldown and the 1 minute cooldowns like
最终清算
don't last nearly 20 seconds. Even if you just needed burst over a short duration,
炽天使
will do more damage anyway and have a quarter of the cooldown. "Tripling" Holy Power generation means that each ability generates triple the normal amount, eg.
审判
generates 3 Holy Power and
公正之剑
generates 6, although you're still capped to a maximum of 5.

- Increases all of your secondary stats for 15 seconds at the cost of 3 Holy Power.
Despite
尘归尘
providing a lot of
炽天使
uptime, it can still be a useful talent depending on the situation. It works very well with other cooldowns, either 1 minute cooldowns like
最终清算
where it covers the entire damage window, or just
复仇之怒
where it buffs the majority of its duration. Ret's base damage isn't especially high, so it relies a lot on cooldown stacking to do most of its damage, and
炽天使
is a large part of that.
With
尘归尘
, procs you get with
炽天使
already active will extend its duration by 4 seconds, but if you hardcast
炽天使
with a proc already active it'll just set the duration to 15 seconds. As Kyrian or with any one minute cooldowns like
最终清算
,
炽天使
should be held for ~15 seconds to line up with
圣洁鸣钟
or other cooldowns, unless it's reduced by

. Otherwise, it's best to just use it on cooldown unless
复仇之怒
or

will come off cooldown within 15 seconds.
Tier 6 (Level 45) Talent for Ret Paladin

- Holy Power spenders reduce the cast time of your next

by 25% and increase its healing done by 10%, stacking up to 4 times.
This is a decent default option for some quicker self healing at very little cost. You usually won't need to heal yourself with
圣光闪现
too often, so you should have 4 stacks most of the time you'd need to use it. While
治疗之手
is a more powerful talent, the cost of 3 Holy Power for
荣耀圣令
makes using it a significant damage loss in PvE, and
无私治愈
will still provide fairly good extra healing without this extra cost.
审判官复仇
- 5 Holy Power spender that deals damage to the target and heals you for the damage dealt. Stunned targets take additional damage.
审判官复仇
is basically useless in both Mythic+ or Raids. It costs 5 Holy Power, but the ability itself does significantly less damage than
圣殿骑士的裁决
. Even with a
神圣意志
proc and against a stunned target,
圣殿骑士的裁决
will still be better because of the conduits that buff its damage. Do not ever use this talent.
治疗之手
- Increases the healing of
荣耀圣令
and reduces the cooldown of
圣疗术
based on the target's missing health.
Although the reduced cooldown on
圣疗术
is a nice bonus, the main benefit of this talent is the increased
荣耀圣令
healing. For healing throughput,
治疗之手
is the strongest option in this row, but
荣耀圣令
does have a significant Holy Power cost. If you end up having to use it constantly you'll lose a lot of damage from lost
圣殿骑士的裁决
or
神圣风暴
casts. It's generally more useful in Mythic+, since you only have 1 Healer compared to 3-5 in Raids, and they often won't be able to top the entire group at once alone, so

can help during periods of large damage.
Tier 7 (Level 50) Talent for Ret Paladin
圣洁怒火
- Increases the duration of
复仇之怒
by 5 seconds, and causes your Holy Power spenders to also do additional AoE damage.
圣洁怒火
is a good generic talent. It doesn't have many special synergies with other talents or systems, but it performs the best in most situations anyway. The extra damage when you spend Holy Power that it procs is AoE and has no capped target scaling, so
圣洁怒火
will generally be the best choice on AoE as well. Although the effect technically deals damage per Holy Power spent, some effects like
神圣意志
or
苍穹之力
will proc
圣洁怒火
as if they cost 3 Holy Power, although the free
神圣风暴
from
征服者之锤
won't.
征伐
- Replaces
复仇之怒
. A buff that gains stacks up to 10 per Holy Power spent, it provides up to 30% extra damage and Haste.
This is a very similar talent to
圣洁怒火
in a lot of ways - it increases
复仇之怒
's duration to 25 seconds and further increases the damage buff it provides. Where
征伐
can be more valuable is situations where the Haste buff is strong.
残次的反制机关
from Legion Timewalking and the new tier set bonuses both perform better with
征伐
since the Haste dramatically increases their proc rates. Unfortunately,
征伐
is a much worse option on cleave or AoE than either of the other options in this row, so it'll mostly just be a niche single target talent that could be occasionally used.
征伐
's buff starts at 1 stack and caps at 10. It increases damage dealt and Haste by 3% per stack. It gains a stack for every Holy Power you spend, so after 3 Holy Power spenders cast you should be at maximum stacks. Similarly to
圣洁怒火
, some effects like
神圣意志
or
苍穹之力
will provide
征伐
stacks as if they cost 3 Holy Power, and the free
神圣风暴
from
征服者之锤
won't.

- Deals a large amount of AoE damage and causes targets hit to take 50% more damage from your Holy Power spenders for 8 seconds. While this ability is
not on cooldown
, it has a high chance to do a small amount of damage passively to your target and increase the damage of your next Holy Power spender by 10%.

has two portions to it: the active ability itself, and the passive damage proc that happens while it's off cooldown. The main ability is relatively straightforward - it does a large amount of AoE damage and increases the damage your Holy Power spenders do to any targets hit. The passive portion only occurs when
最终清算
is able to be used but hasn't been yet, and is a single target proc that does a small amount of damage.
最终清算
should be used close to on cooldown, so this passive should basically only ever happen when you need to hold it for add spawns or a damage window. This talent is particularly strong when combined with other cooldowns - buffs like
炽天使
, burst Holy Power generation like
圣洁鸣钟
, or effects like
征服者之锤
that proc extra spenders that also get buffed.
War Mode for Retribution Paladin
War Mode
is a World PvP system. You are now able to toggle War Mode while in Stormwind or Orgrimmar to gain access to PvP Talents in the outdoor world as well as other bonuses, like increased rewards from World quests and 10% extra experience. The downside is that you will always be in PvP combat mode, with the rewards counterbalancing that risk.
With that in mind, not all talents give the best throughput for your Retribution Paladin. We've selected the best options for you to use while doing outdoor content with this mode turned on. Keep in mind that these are the best options for PvE activities and may differ from those used when fighting other players.
War Mode bonuses may now scale up to 30%, based on how imbalanced is the PvP situation against your faction. On top of that, you will be able to turn off War Mode in any resting area, like smaller cities and inns, allowing you to leave unfavorable situations if you so desire.

- When you are healed by an ally, all nearby allies within 20 yards are also healed for 20% of the amount.

increases movement speed, you gain it as well when cast on a friendly target, and is undispellable.

- When you or your nearby allies are affected by a loss of control effect, your Holy damage and Critical Strike are increased.

- Removes and reduces the duration of future loss of control effects from an ally.

Am I missing something? The guide says it has War Mode talents at the bottom but I don't actually see them anywhere.

On my field tests Consecration does much more damage than wake of ashes. And as Melee you almost always stand next to tank / boss so not much movement.
(I did cycles of 3 minute tests on dummy, and whit consecration i did 200k more damage and 600dps)

Justicar's Vengeance is more or less a useless trap.
Such has been said since legion when it could oneshot lesser geared people with its stun crit damage and heal at the same time , more so when paired with Fist of Justice and doesn't require wasting a gcd to heal

Selfless Healer - Judgment reduces the cast time of your next Flash of Light by 25% and increases its healing done.
not quite true its acutly every holy power spending abilty does that on judgement.
and that incudes free spells like with Empyrean Power and Divine Purpose procs.
just a minor thing i thought you should know :)

Really nice guide. I like the addition of Solo Questing tips. I know open-world content gets trivial really fast but it's a nice addition for new players.
