Recommended Gear for Retribution Paladins in Shadowlands
What is the BiS Retribution Paladin gear?
With many different sources of gearing and loot scarcity in Shadowlands, targeting your absolute Best in Slot gear isn't entirely realistic; instead, we've created a Best in Slot list from the ideal Retribution Paladin raid drops found in Shadowlands, from Mythic Dungeons, to help you decide what to prioritize.
While raid drops are generally the most reliable way of getting high item level gear, many other items can be just as good if not better, so you should reference the stat priorities listed on the
stats page
and our
Raidbots guide
to help determine your own BiS gear based on what is available to you.
Shadowlands Season 2 Gearing Guide
Sepulcher of the First Ones Gear for Retribution Paladin
Retribution favors item level above all else, outside of specific trinkets. The best gear from Sepulcher is essentially just all the loot you can get from the last three bosses -
Lords of Dread
,
, and
- and then filling out other slots based on what you have available or what sims better for you. Don't worry too much about specific secondary stats either, Ret usually does best with a healthy mixture of all of them rather than stacking one or two stats.
This list doesn't include Legendaries, since the slots you'll use for them will depend somewhat on what tier pieces you have available:
- Chest is technically best, but will clash with a tier slot, in which case Back is fine.
- Put on Belt in order to not clash with tier slots.
- Put on either Ring or Feet in order to not clash with other Legendary slots, tier slots, or higher item level gear. During progression you may want to just craft this on your lowest item level slot instead.

Tier Set Bonus for Retribution Paladin
Shadowlands Season 3 marks the return of tier sets. This time around, tier sets are available not only for raiders, but also available from Mythic+ and PvP as well.
Luminous Chevalier's Gallantry
2-Set
-
- When you benefit from
, you gain
for 3 sec.
4-Set
-
-
has a 50% chance to reset the cooldown of
instead of
.
The set is composed of five pieces of gear:
(Helm -
)
(Shoulders -
Lords of Dread
)
(Chest -
)
(Gloves -
)
(Legs -
)
To unlock the tier set bonus, Retribution Paladins prefer equipping tier pieces on
Helm
,
Shoulder
,
Legs
, and
Gloves
. However, you can use any 4 combination of the five pieces, aiming to achieve the highest overall item level.
The Retribution set bonus helps to provide a very high uptime on
, which is a strong damage buff. The
cooldown resets are also very strong on AoE.

Best Legendary Items for Retribution Paladin
In Shadowlands, players are able to craft customizable Legendary Items. In order to craft these items, players must collect tradeskill materials,
from Zereth Mortis,
, and
from Torghast and bring them to the Runecarver.

Double Legendaries for Retribution Paladin
Patch 9.2 allows players to use two legendary pieces at the same time, once they progress further enough in the campaign. This opens new ways for players to interact with the Covenant and Legendary system.

Mythic+ Gear for Retribution Paladin
As mentioned, there isn't an exact BiS list for Retribution, but all of the gear listed below are reasonably good items you can acquire from Mythic+ dungeons. Gear in Shadowlands doesn't always have a consistent amount of secondary stats for different pieces of the same slot and item level. Since Ret doesn't tend to stack one specific stat, the better option in each slot will usually be the item with an extra point or two of secondary stats.

Best Trinkets for Retribution Paladins in Shadowlands
Ideally, Retribution wants one passive trinket and one on-use trinket to use with its cooldowns. There may be combinations where you do end up using two passive trinkets or two on-use trinkets depending on their strength, but generally one of each will end up being the best choice. These trinkets are ranked based on the highest item level you can attain them at, but if you have one of the lower performing trinkets at a very high item level then it can also easily outperform some of the better ones listed.

Best Items to Upgrade with Valor Points in Shadowlands
Points is a currency used by players to upgrade items from Mythic+ Dungeons, either from running Mythic Keystones or from the Great Vault, up to item level 272. Similarly to
, Valor has a cap that is increased every week during the Season.
You can obtain Valor by completing Mythic+ dungeons or completing daily callings. You can learn more about Valor in our in-depth guide.
Earning and Spending Valor Points
If you don't already have a high item level weapon, you should prioritize upgrading one over other slots since Retribution cares about weapon damage much more than any other armor slot. Otherwise, trinkets are the next biggest upgrade you can get, since you'll most likely want at least one passive trinket which can be hard to come by, and after that simply upgrade the lowest item level slots you still have.

Notes
Weapons
Mists of Tirna Scithe
Since there's only Crit/Mastery or Haste/Versatility weapons available from Mythic+, the Haste/Versatility weapons will usually be slightly better, but this can depend on the rest of your gear.
Necrotic Wake
Trinkets
Plaguefall
This is one of the strongest passive trinkets from Mythic+. Although it's strongest on single target, it still holds value on cleave since stacks will also be applied to any secondary targets you hit instead of attempting to be refreshed on your primary target.
De Other Side
A strong on use trinket, but one that you need to be careful about when using - if alternative conditions are met, for example if you're stunned, have aggro, or your healer is low on mana, then it may try to "solve" one of these situations rather than provide you a secondary stat buff.
De Other Side
A simpler and also decent alternative on use trinket, this just provides a Critical Strike buff for 15s. It should be held and used with
.
Items to Prioritize in the Great Vault
If you have the option to take a Tier item from the Great Vault in a slot where you don't currently have one, you should almost always take it. The damage benefit you'll get from the tier set bonuses will far surpass any item level differences.
Your next priority should always be a weapon if it's a significant item level upgrade. The weapon damage from a higher-level weapon is much more significant than a normal item in any other slot. After that, particularly strong trinkets like
or
are worth keeping an eye out for, and any large item level increases on slots with a lot of stats. You can also use Raidbots to sim any potential upgrades from the Great Vault to see what the best one will be for you.

Any way to gear rather than running dungeons over and over? I hate running dungeons more than once to see it. I just wanna play BG's mostly.

"This guide will help you select the best pieces of gear from Dungeons and Raids in BFA, whether they be

, trinkets, armor, or Azerite Traits."
As of 7/11/19 - there's no Weapon section even though it says it?

I just wish there was even more of an opinion about gear rather than just a list of what's available....really does no good. I can get this information from the Raid Journal.

Sad this guide is already outdated. Again... There's no mention of the 190 BoE Sword that it's BiS right now. There is also no analysis on Trinkets and pros/cons of their uses. Best Retribution stats right now are Haste/Crit and you miss out on Haste/Crit gear on the "recommended" list where there is such gear available right now. This is BfA all over again, Paladin Retribution guide rarely gets even close to the love that other wowhead guides get.

TLDR
-
Trinket tier list is not that accurate
, run your own
"gear comparison" simulations on RaidBots
, it is
really easy and very awesome
!
Just as a point of order, regarding the trinkets tier list, this is not really as accurate as it should be, especially not after running tons of simulations on my ret paladin on Raid Bots, which I highly recommend when weighing up trinket options!
Most notably,
泰坦之眼腺体
should be S-tier or A-tier, as
it competes very well against
老兵之魂
when at similar item levels with a marginal ~2% split for LFR quality versions (currently they are B-tier and S-tier BiS respectively)! This is heavily influenced by a lot of things, most notably by what your highest secondary stat is, due to how
泰坦之眼腺体
works.
So again, I cannot stress this enough, go
run your own simulations on RaidBots
, they make it SUPER easy for you, even includes looking up your character to pull your items and stuff from the WoW Armory, and a search box to find the trinket(s) you want to compare, etc!
PS - The
simulation I linked
uses ilvl 213
泰坦之眼腺体
and 220
老兵之魂
, as these are the ilvl at which they drop in LFR. I did the same for
Normal
and
Heroic
, just to display the degree of differential in performance for my character specifically.

I notice
战斗烈焰
is not mentioned in the trinket section. I have ilvl213 and it regularly out sims most other trinkets at ilvl220.
