Retribution Paladin Artifact Challenge
Sigryn prepares to assault Odyn himself, with some amount of preparation you'll be ready to stop her before she breaks through the Halls of Valor. The encounter may not seem difficult at first, but it is very punishing, small mistakes will force you to go grind some more nether shards to try again. Don't get discouraged though, perhaps spend some time in
Contemplation
and soon the Shattered Reckoning Ashbringer appearance will be yours.
Retribution - Shattered Reckoning
Consumables:
Drums of Fury
Potion of the Old War
or
Potion of Prolonged Power
Defiled Augment Rune
Azshari Salad
or
Lavish Suramar Feast
None of these are necessary but can provide that little extra to help you get over some of the hurdles in the encounter.
Talents:
There are two viable strategys to this boss, one involves using
Repentance
to CC Sigryn and ignore her mechanics, and another involves just straight overpowering the scenario with the gear and traits that are accessible this late in the expansion. Which strategy to use is up to you, but i would personally reccomend this late in the expansion trying the "zerg" strategy. regardless both builds are listed below.
Zerg Strategy
With this Strategy your goal is to maximize your cleave/AoE damage, as such the talents support that. You can take
忏悔
as a back up if you miss your

is solid if you happen to make a mistake but
骑手
is Incredibly useful as well so that option is up to you.
Repentance Strategy
Damage is not the primary concern so taking talents that can help you survive a bit longer will be very important, for example many have found success switching to
Justicar's Vengeance
and
Divine Purpose
for the significant increase in self-healing.
Repentance
is very strong but not required.
Zeal
and
Divine Hammer
are not recommended if you are taking repentance as it is very likely they will break the CC.
Divine Intervention
can also be exceptionally strong if you find there are certain parts in the encounter that you are having trouble dealing with.
Gear:
Reccomended Ilvl: 915
This challenge is one of the easier ones and as such is doable at significantly lower itemlevels than the reccomended, but 915 is relatively straightforward to get and is a good starting point for your gear. Below that threshold it starts to become more difficult. Also consider which trinkets you bring to the encounter. Burst trinkets such as
Faulty Countermeasure
or
Horn of Valor
are very helpful to break through the shield. Any dps trinket should do, stat sticks are always a solid choice in Legion.
Legendaries
Once again this fight isn't focused on the amount of damage you can do but on surviving long enough and dealing with all of the mechanics properly. With that in mind traditional DPS oriented legendaries are not always the best, and some of the utility legendaries can make a very large difference:
Prydaz, Xavaric's Magnum Opus
- Damage from auto-attacks and spells from the enemies are a large part of the damage you will take. This will mitigate almost all of the unavoidable damage in this encounter.
Aegisjalmur, the Armguards of Awe
- This acts as a cheat death and
will
save you at least once during the encounter while you're learning everything. This is also strong when you find parts of the encounter where you cannot deal with all the mechanics and stay alive at the same time.
Aggramar's Stride
- There is a lot of running around, this will make it a bit easier on you especially if you do not want to take
Cavalier
.
Sephuz's Secret
- Same as Aggramar's Stride. Movement is helpful and there are many opportunities to interrupt and stun during the fight to make use of the special effect.
Other legendaries are more useful for damage, but the ones listed above are all very good for dealing with the mechanics of this encounter.
The Challenge
The entire encounter is one long phase that forces you to deal with several mechanics, often at the same time. There is no enrage timer. Each mechanic has a specific counter to it that uses your class abilities, several of which you may not be used to using. The bosses share hp and it does not matter who you attack. Jarl Velbrand will die first, followed by runeseer. The encounter will end before Sigryn dies.
Jarl Velbrand
Bladestorm
: You can deal with this by either running away from the bladestorm or stunning the Jarl with
Hammer of Justice
. The area is very large but you are able to run out of it. The damage increases the closer you are to him.
Berserker's Rage
: Same as most enrages, increases his damage done by a lot. Counter this by running away from him and using
Hand of Hindrance
to slow him. Stunning with
Hammer of Justice
is also an option, but is better used on the bladestorm and on Sigryn when she is casting. Or you can use

to ignore this and get a bit of extra damage, you can only do this once however.
Runeseer Faljar
Ancestral Knowledge
: Runeseer will put a shield on himself (
Ancestral Knowledge
) that you must damage to remove and then interrupt the cast. This is the important dps part of the fight and the difficult part when multiple mechanics are going off at the same time. This will happen somewhat frequently and you should save your damage cooldown for this,
Avenging Wrath
or
Crusade
. You have 20 seconds to go through 5m health, and then interrupt. This should be easy to do with cooldowns but in some situations you may want to use your potion or drums. Once Jarl Velbrand dies this will be cast repeatedly, do not interrupt right away. Wait until the cast is closer to being finished.
Sigryn
Throw Spear
: Throws a spear at you and puts a green puddle on the ground. Don't stand in the puddle afterwards.
Dark Wings
: This will spawn a wave of valkyr outside of the room with a single gap in it somewhere. Find the gap and stand there before the valkyrs sweep the room, if you don't they will do major damage to you. She will continue to cast this even while under the effect of various CCs.
Blood of the Father
: This cast will kill you if she finishes the cast. You can suppress the effect by applying a CC such as
Repentance
, or if you can manage to use
Hammer of Justice
to interrupt it before the buff is applied to her. She will not recast the ability for a great deal of time if you land the interrupt, this is the key to the "Zerg" strat.
Environment
Runic Detonation
: Three purple runes will appear on the ground on the edge of the inner circle on the ground. The will slowly shrink until they explode when they are too small. Run over them to stop them from exploding. They do about 3 million damage if they are not stepped on before they explode.
Orb of Valor
: Several of these yellow orbs will appear through the fight and will heal you if you step on top of them.
Strategy
Zerg Strategy
For the zerg strategy your goal is to get as much damage in as quickly as possible, keep a very close eye on Sigryn as you will need to interrupt her

cast with
Hammer of Justice
, failure to do so is almost certainly going to be a wipe, you can use Repentance to try and recover if you miss your brief window, but may break it and have to be careful untill it expires. The good news though is once you land your stun you can AoE like crazy and will only have to stun her 1-3 times depending on gear. For this reason it is reccomended you
DON'T
use
Hammer of Justice
for
ANYTHING ELSE
as you run the risk of not having it when you need it. Doing this strategy you have no room for error on your stuns, but it will more than half your kill time and thus reduce the possibility of failure greatly. It is incredibly easy to pull off and with the gear we have this late in legion makes this encounter much easier. The key is even though its tempting to use
Hammer of Justice
to interrupt Jarl Velbrand you can't.
Repentance Strategy:
Now that you know how to handle each mechanic separately, the general flow of the fight shouldn't be too hard. When the fight begins it is best to pull Sigryn away from the other mobs and CC her with
Repentance
when she is at the corner of the room. The easiest way to do this is to start the fight with a taunt.
Repentance
Will last for 60 seconds and you should cast it again when it's about to fall off (just slightly before) so she remains in CC for another 30s.
After the second repentance is done, let her attack you for about 15 seconds so that the diminishing returns on CC goes away and you can start the
Repentance
cycle over again.
If she starts to cast
Blood of the Father
during this time you can use either
Repentance
or
Hammer of Justice
to stop her and play defensively until your cooldowns are available again.
Occasionally Sigryn will "empower" either Jarl Velbrand or Runeseer Faljar. This forces them to cast one of their abilities and there will be a raid warning message when this happens. She will also do this while CCd. This is the majority of the encounter, reacting to each of the empowers properly. Heavy damage for the runeseer's shield. Stuns/slows for the Jarl's enrage and bladestorms, stand in the right spot for the valkyrs, and step on the purple runes. At one point in the encounter Sigryn will cause multiple abilities to all be cast at the same time. This is the most dangerous part of the encounter and should happen around 50-60%.
Divine Shield
should be saved for this point if you can (or
Aegisjalmur, the Armguards of Awe
if you have it) since this is the most likely place for you to die. It is ok to let one of the abilities go off if you can bubble through it.
Regardless of strategy since all 3 share health, Jarl Velbrand will die first which causes Runeseer to cast his
Ancestral Knowledge
repeatedly. Hold your interrupt as long as you can, interrupting before you have to run for
Dark Wings
or before the cast finishes.
Final Reminders
This fight is
not
about being able to do a lot of damage. This fight can be won entirely with a calm reaction to every mechanic and some burst damage for the
Ancestral Knowledge
. More damage will make it easier but focus on the mechanics because they will kill you very quickly.
Keeping sigryn under the effects of
Repentance
and keeping track of the diminishing returns.
Take your time and keep calm. Even when you're close to finishing the fight keep doing everything properly. The encounter ends before the mobs die but a level head will keep you alive

Let it be known that there is a small, REALLY annoying bug with the runes for this fight. If you are standing on a rune when it spawns, it explodes. As a tip for everyone trying this challenge, avoid standing on the areas around the center ring where they spawn to prevent this.
Every time I've stood on a ring when it spawned it exploded. It's happened about 4 times total through all my attempts and each time triggered it without fail. Watch your step!

Just completed this at Ilv 900, using Sephuz and Aegisjalmur. Couple of thoughts -
1. Use flash of light early and often. You don't want to be forced to heal yourself during Ancestral Knowledge, when you're liable to get valks during the shield. The only DPS check is the shield, so take your time and stay safe so you can go ham during it.
2. Related to 1, don't waste divine shield as a means to recover some health. It's fairly likely you'll get a bad fel pool during Ancestral Knowledge, so having your bubble to stand in the pool/ignore a round of valks is really helpful.
3. The Farseer can be a pain to move around. If you get into his melee range and make small movements away from him, he'll usually chase you. This is mostly problematic when you want to judge but Sig is repentanced right next to you, or you want to cleave onto the Jarl. If nothing else, you can pull Sig away from the Farseer and repentance, then move back to the Farseer.
4. I took Eye for an Eye instead of Justicar's Vengence. A significant portion of the damage I took during the fight was physical. (28 million out of 36 million, 18 million of it being from melee swings) Eye for an Eye actually accounted for 5 million damage dealt (About 1.5% overall) and gives that 35% physical reduction. I used this with wings when I had all 3 grouped up and cleaved them, without needing to worry too much about the extra damage I'd take. I also stuck with Crusade instead of Divine Purpose, but it was difficult to get decent value out of Crusade due to the valks, so take that with a grain of salt. If you go JV, DP is a must so you can use procs on JV.
5. I found Cavalier to be incredibly valuable, and I wouldn't personally replace it with DI, especially if you have Aegisjalmur. Cavalier saved me on distant valk spawns and bad runes multiple times, so if you can get away with not using DI, I'd suggest it.

Do not use Hidden Satyr. Use something else, Satyr procs can break repentance on Sigryn.

So here's my experience on the fight. The duration of Repentance is halved each time you use it from 60 seconds to 30 then to 15, then the duration of Repentance is reset again to 60 seconds. Also every so often Sigryn will resist Repentance.
On the first Ancestral Knowledge Sigryn is no longer buffed by Repentance but she is still stunned until Jarl starts to channel Bladestorm. You have about 3-5 seconds before Sigryn breaks free from whatever is stunning her and she will immediately start casting Blood of the Father. Stun her first, wait for it to wear, then use Repentance.
After the second Ancestral Knowledge things start to get taxing. Sigryn will probably lose her Repentance debuff whilst at the same time Jarl will become empowered, runes will start appearing on the ground, and a line of val'kyr will flank you. This is where you'll need to pop Divine Shield to save your butt whilst applying stuns/Repentance. I recall that Sigryn gets immune again to Repentance somewhere around here but can't remember how many Repentances it takes for her to get immune to it.

Possibly in an attempt to fix the auto explode bug if it spawns under you, I encountered another glitch where no matter how many times you run over a rune it will not disappear. This happened while the rune was still huge so the hit box should have been big enough not to miss or glitch over. Happened twice. I thought it was because of my shield but it happened again no shield.
Completing the challenge I was 905 equipped and using Prydaz shield neck legendary and vengeance shield wrist legendary.

914 ilvl (for some reason it was 912 inside the scenario), got it on my 9th attempt. Biggest problem for me were the runes and being unable to reach them all in time or having to choose between dying to a rune or to val'kyr wall :D

Oh my God... I finally did it, guys! After 2 hours of non-stop trying, I finally did it! I knew the fight by heart almost! :D I actually could have done it in 30 minutes cause I had a good try, they were at 30% or so, but I $%^&ed up my

, because I panicked and used it when he had the shield up :( I didn't have enough time to use the next one. So I exploded... Then I couldn't get them below 50%. At 50% it's the hardest part! You really need to save your Divine Shield for that time and Repentance Sigryn before stunning Jarl, cause they both start casting at the same time and it's a matter of miliseconds! I Repentance'd Sigryn 4 times right at the end of her cast, and she was Repentace'd and in Demon Form, so I'm dead when she wakes up...
I did it with 924 iLvl, yeah I know it's high, but my legendaries sucked:

. Then chest is okay-ish, but the trinket #$%^ed me up many times. Cause I had it on a macro for Blade of Justice, and it ended up waking up Sigryn from Repentance many times. I ended up removing the macro and using the trinket when I wanted. (should have done it before, huh?) Anyway, I was very tired because I tried from 4 till 6 AM but in the end, it's very rewarding! When you are below 50% and you feel you will do this, oh boy. And the skin is very cool!
Tip for those who still try. You really need those macros. I don't think I could have done it without them. The macros for stunning and slowing Jarl, and for using Repentance on Sygrin, you need all these 3 macros. When Jarl enrages the first time, you can easily kite him by staying in melee range of Faljar, but making little steps backwards. That way you will keep doing damage to him, and kite Jarl, who will be slowed! (important) Don't use any cooldowns when he enrages the first time, you can do it without them.
And yes I used Justicar's Vengeance with Divine Purpose. Sometimes you can get a lot of procs and use them for healing or for aoe damage, when all 3 are near you. Then only things that can kill you are:
Sygrin in Demon Form
Enraged Jarl
The caster if not interrupted
Runes (very important)
Flying valkyries (less important)
In rest, there is not much damage that is coming into your face. Remember, you can survive the attack of those flying valkyries 1 time, I think, but if a rune explodes, You're most likely dead.
And to give you a better understanding of how the fight goes here is the "script" of the fight:
You stand on the other side of the room, and taunt her. Wait until she comes close to you and Repentace her.
You mount up an go to the caster guy and start doing damage to him slowly backstepping so that he follows you.
As soon as Jarl enrages, Hand of Hindrance him with the macro and continue to damage the caster
Runes will appear, use mount 1 time to clear them and by that time Jarl will no longer be enraged. You can return to dealing damage to both if they are close.
1 more set of runes will appear, you can clear these without using the CD of Cavalry, cause Jarl is not enraged and it's easy and before returning to deal damage, recast Repentance on Sigryn.
You return to dealing damage and the caster will soon start to cast Ancestral Knowledge and simultaneously Sigryn will also come. Do as much damage as possible. AOE is recommended. And when the shield is down, wait until the end of the cast, or if Dark Wings appear, interrupt immediately and run to a safe locat1on.
Now just continue the rune and Dark Wings game till Jarl starts to cast Whirlwind. As soon as he starts to cast, you STUN HIM ASAP and also immediately after that you Repentance Sigryn.
Now you have 1 more minute to damage both.(remember you still haven't used any cooldowns yet)
After that 1 minute, recast Repentance. That's 30 more seconds.
And here it gets tricky. You will most likely have an enraged Jarl, Dark Wings and runes on the floor. So divine shield is your friend + slowing Jarl. Use divine shield as late as possible.
If you survived all that %^&*. Congrats! Now when you hear/see that cast of Whirlwind from Jarl, immediately cast Repentance on Sigryn! And only after a successful cast of Rep. you will stun Jarl.
1 more minute of dealing damage and at that point, there will be no more Demonic Form from Sigryn and you can even AOE them in a group of 3.
Good luck! Prepare 1500 gold for repairs and many Nethershards! :)))

I'm not sure if everyone new this or not but once you get Sigryn down to about 50% the fight becomes exponentially easier due to the fact that they stop doing some of their mechanics. Jarl Velbrand stopped berserking and Sigryn stop going into demon form so all I had to worry about was the Valkyries and the puddles made by Sigryn. The macros mentioned above saved me a lot of hassle during the fight, but I did not have the "best legendaries". I used

Just did it with ilvl 896 without any legendaries, took me only 3 tries with talent build 1122111. My biggest piece of advice is: dps doesn't matter! sometimes I would just run around for 10 seconds, just healing up and doing mechanics. The fight allows you to take it very slowly and mechanically, take advantage of this (I finished the fight with only 500k dps, and more than 60 million healing)

Sigryn down. That was about as challenging as the paladin mount quest back in scholomance in the vanilla days!
Tips to add: heal often, don’t rebuke early! Messed up my interrupt the first time under 50%. Keep at it you’ll get it!
Legendaries used: Seph ring, Rethus belt. Rethus belt was a major help, answering those that asked before. I actually had this item upgraded to IL 1000

If there was ever a quest to discourage new players from continuing to play this game its this one. You do a quest chain that is not difficult but builds a story and keeps the player engaged just to get to this quest that will make you feel completely powerless and defeated unless you know exactly what to do. It's not a proper transition in my opinion.I wonder how many players did the quest chain and got to this point just to give up on it. I probably won't be completing this. It's not worth the reward or the effort required to complete it. If there are quests like this in BFA I'm just going to ignore them completely.

This took me about 30 tries, I kept getting stuck at the part where Sigryn gets to 50% but all the mechanics spawn around the same time. It seemed my bubble didn't last long enough. What saved me during this was doing my CC on Sigryn and Jarl while bubbled, then spam flash heals while having righteous protector up after bubble expired. It bought me enough time to have the CD expire so I could use Lay on Hands which allowed me to survive that crazy part. The rest of the fight was a breeze.
Also, thanks to those above who offered some great advice. One of the hardest things I've ever done in this game.

Took a few attempts to remember to do all the mechanics but finally got it. If you happen to have a

use it. Provided me with around 60k hps (half my healing/absorbs). Allowed me to not worry about dying and focus on mechanics. Used talent ring and sephurz for legis

Biggest problem in this fight is movement if you ask me, when runes spawn or you need to kite Jarls whirlwhind. There for i choosed those talents instead, Cavalier for extra movement which helps alot and Eye for an Eye, since im not a big fan of Justicar's Vengeance talent. Between Fires of Justice and Zeal talent both will probably work i went with fire of justice.
But remember movement is needed, When i did not have the Cavalier talent, i wiped because, one of those horses are simply not enough. Even had the engineering speedthingy on my waist. (Also know as Nitro Boost)
And if you as me have AoE traits from the argus relic thing, still worked for me aslong as i pulled Sigryn across the map where i also Repentanced her, the first CC on her is most important after that you should really only CC she when she does here cast her AoE oneshot ability, cant remember name of it but since she only hard cast onething so. And also HoJ jarl when he goes enrage and kite him. And this fight is easy. Its all about surviving the mechanics, if you can handle that, its GG quest completed. And the valkyrs is a joke. But try never get stressed that can simply kill you with the slightest mistake.
