Welcome to Wowheads "Returning and New Player Basic PvE Guide!" In this guide we will go over some of the important aspects of high level PvE content, including communication, supplies, situational awareness and even keybinds. Don't forget to rate this guide and check out all of the other great things Wowhead has to offer.
I'd like to introduce myself before we get started. My name is Pyromancer! I am a Destruction/Affliction Warlock that currently raids in the guild <Hard in the Paint> on Windrunner (US) Alliance. We are ranked US 25th as a guild and we are very excited to move forward into Tomb of Sargeras. I have been playing this game competitively for about 4 years now. I began playing in Mists of Pandaria and started raiding competitively in Siege of Orgrimmar. I am the Wowhead author of the Destruction Warlock guide as well as the Affliction Warlock Challenge Artifact portion of the Affliction Warlock guide. I am also a content creator on YouTube with a channel nearing 20,000 subscribers. Feel free to check out my channel
here!
Thank you for visiting this guide and I hope you enjoy.
We'll start with the basics.
Play what you enjoy!
One of the most important factors to consider, when playing World of Warcraft, is your enjoyment of the class or specialization you play.
There are 36 specs to choose from and many function wildly different from one another. For example, if you love to play at a fast pace, you may enjoy Arms Warrior or Outlaw Rogue! These two specs sit at the top of the Actions Per Minute rankings at 82 and 69 APM (Actions Per Minute) respectively. If you prefer slower paced gameplay, looking toward Affliction Warlock (36 APM) or Assassination Rogue (34 APM) may be a better option!
Here is an Actions Per Minute table for all DPS specializations as of 7.2!
Of course, there is more to picking a class than how fast you like to mash your keys! There are many other things to consider, including:
The lore (or storyline) behind your class/spec!
There are many interesting backstories to the origin of the classes, even some specific to characters in the game which hold significant storyline value!
The visual appearance of your spells and available armor!
There are thousands of armor sets in World of Warcraft. Being able to tailor the look of your character should certainly be considered if you care about aesthetics.
How powerful your specialization or class is!
Everyone knows it's fun to do well in video games. A lot of players choose to play the "fotm" or "flavor of the month" spec, in order to perform the best. Others choose to stick to their guns because they have an attachment to their class identity.
Playing multiple roles within a PvE setting!
Some classes like Paladin, allow you to play a Tank, DPS and Healing role. If you like to mix it up, it may be a great option for you! If you like to stick with pure damage output, something like Warlock, Rogue, Hunter or Mage might interest you!
Take it from a Mythic raider; you do not want to spend all of your time playing a class which you don't enjoy, even if it is powerful. There comes a point where you may become bored or burned out because you simply do not enjoy the flow or playstyle of the spec.
Research your class!
Now that we have discussed some of the key things to consider when selecting a specialization or class, we can talk about further researching your class. This is going to be one of the most important sections of this guide, so read carefully.
There are many aspects to your class, including spells, talents, rotation, gear, gems/enchants, etc. Thankfully, Wowhead has an excellent team of guide authors who have laid out most of this information for you! Below I have linked the class guides for every single specialization. You can also find links to most class Discord servers from these guides. Put in time to learn your class.

Artifact Power Farming!
One thing that every class is subject to, regardless of what you play, is the endless collection of Artifact Power. To the average player, obtaining Artifact Power may seem unimportant, but in the raiding scene there are generally Artifact Weapon level goals that should be met. Before the rework of artifact weapons, having
54
traits was required for the majority of Mythic Guilds. As you collect AP for your weapon, you generally become exponentially more powerful. With the obtainment of golden traits and the new spell
抗魔联军的调和
, you will find quite substantial boosts to the power of your character. Focus on what is suggested in your class guides above. Be sure you are obtaining your traits in the correct manner.
How do you obtain the most Artifact Power though? Below are several methods that are effective, in no particular order.
Raids, raids, raids!
Whether it is LFR, Normal, Heroic or Mythic, all raids are a good source of AP. With a good group, it can be one of the fastest methods of obtaining AP in the game. Remember, X boss on X difficulty can only give you AP once a week, so repeating the same difficulty will do you no good.
Mythic/Mythic+ Dungeons!
While regular Mythic dungeons do not yield as much AP as Mythic+, it is also not a bad way of obtaining Legendary items, which can give massive boosts to player power. However, with the introduction of hotfixed in 7.2, the base timer length of the Mythic+ dungeon now dictates how much Artifact Power you will receive by completing it. Because of this, you can run nearly any Mythic+ dungeon and receive an adequate amount of AP, but you may still choose to avoid dungeons like
英灵殿
or
永夜大教堂
, simply because some groups struggle at higher key levels.
World Quests!
As repetitive as they can be, world quests can sometimes net you tens of millions of Artifact Power per day. Simply by logging in and doing your daily world quests, you may gain 70m-120m+ AP at Artifact Knowledge level 40.
PvP!
You didn't think I would forget the PvP (Player vs Player) fanatics out there, did you? I am generally partial to PvE, but Battlegrounds and Arenas can actually provide decent Artifact Power if you win enough. These are also fun to do when just winding down or playing with other friends.
Bring Your Supplies!
Generally, if you are looking to be a part of an organized PvE group, you will want to have the proper supplies. This includes battle elixirs/flasks, potions, food, augment/vantus runes and healing tonics. Below I will outline how to prepare and list some of the types of supplies you should look in to.
Flasks
include
耳语契约合剂
for Intellect users,
第七恶魔合剂
for Agility users,
无尽大军合剂
for Strength users and
千万战痕合剂
if you want extra Stamina.
Remember that these persist through death, so don't go reapplying it every time you die.
Potions
provide a few more options. Generally,
延时之力药水
is the go-to option for raid roles. However, healers may choose to use
魔力洪流药水
or
古代法力药水
to regain mana. DPS may also consider
致命优雅药水
for casters and
上古战神药水
for melee DPS (these are not as commonly used in Nighthold). Try to bring plenty of your choice potion for raid and high level dungeon encounters! They are very beneficial.
Food
buffs are lost every time you die, so bring plenty! Select food based on what is the most valuable stat for your specialization. The following foods are the most commonly used in raids:
苏拉玛奢华大餐
is the best and most commonly used food within raids. After placing the feast, players can share the food and gain 500 in their main stat. If you need to bring your own food, consider
艾萨莉色拉
,
面拖鱼排
,
夜之子小食拼盘
and
“饥饿的魔导师”套餐
.
Please remember that you must remain seated and eating the food for 10 seconds to gain the benefit.
Runes
provide a personal buff that increases Agility, Intellect and Strength by 325 for 1 hour. However, they can be quite expensive at times, but in Patch 7.3, reaching Exalted with Army of the Light rewards the perma-rune
光铸调和符文
. Additionally, there are boss-specific runes that can only be used once a week, but provide 1,500 versatility when fighting that particular boss. These are called Vantus Runes. They appear in this manner,
凡图斯符文:古尔丹
, with their name being dictated by which boss they are specific to. These last a week, even through death.
Keybinding Your Abilities!
There will always be limitations to how you can bind your abilities to specific keys on your keyboard/mouse. A lot of players use MMO gaming mice, which have 8-12 side-buttons that allow them to use main abilities with their mouse hand, whilst moving their character and using keyboard abilities at the same time. You may also have a keyboard which has gaming or "macro" keys. If you do, they likely look something like this:
These are extra keys that allow for more keybinds on your left hand side. These are not at all necessary for any class, but can be beneficial if you find yourself running out of comfortable keys to press. Many players use the 1 through 5 keys on their keyboard for main rotation spells, however, I believe that the keys centralized around your index finger are generally the best to use. These include the E, R, F, T, G, C, V, X, Q and 1 through 5 keys. This provides you with 14 base keys that are easily accessible, without any modifier keys.
Modifier keys
are keys that alter the function of another key you are pressing. Take Shift And Alt as the primary and most common examples. If you hold down Alt and hit your 'E' key, it is not going to trigger whatever is bound directly to your 'E' key. It will be a separate input, which gives you many options for keybinds. You just went from 14 keybinds to 28 keybinds just with the use of a modifier key. Keep this in mind when making comfortable ability binds.
BUT CLICKING THOUGH?!
Don't do it. When I first started playing WoW, I was convinced that clicking was just as efficient as keybinding. At a beginner level, it's probably true, but when you get down to the facts, your brain can simply process keystrokes faster than moving your mouse and clicking. Don't make excuses for yourself if you click, but ween yourself off slowly. Bind your main rotation abilities and do dungeons/LFR to get used to them. When you're confident in your base spells, add extra things like cooldowns, potions, etc.
Optimizing Your UI!
Is there anything in particular you notice about my UI? I've spent years tweaking my UI to be exactly how I want it, personalized for me and not for anyone else. That's how you should build your own UI -
FOR YOU!
I'm a very strong believer that the most important information in your UI should be positioned around where your character is on the screen (the center). There is absolutely no reason to have your health bars in the top left corner. All you are doing by leaving them there is inhibiting your ability to look from your characters feet to health bars in a very fast manner. Sometimes living and dying, renewing dots that are expiring, etc. comes down to milliseconds worth of reaction time. Because of this, your health bars, any weakauras you have, your boss timers and resource bars/class bar should be centralized around the middle of your screen. Now don't forget, it is entirely possible to play well with a default UI. Several high level players like Yipzarena do this with no issue, however there shouldn't be any denying that it is better to have a custom UI that works for you. Don't try to copy other players' UI. Build your own with addons like ElvUI, Shadowed Unit Frames and many others.
If you are unfamiliar with downloading addons, most players download their addons from the Twitch/Curse Client. You can find a link to their website
here!
Take a moment to consider the following addons for PvE use! I will give a name for the addon and a brief description of it's purpose!
BigWigs Boss Mods or Deadly Boss Mods
- These are the most commonly used raid/dungeon addons. Do not use both though, as they fulfill the same purpose! They will show you timers for upcoming abilities and other useful alerts/information.
Details!, Skada Damage Meter or Recount
- These are damage, healing, debuff/buff, deaths, etc. trackers for any combat situation in the game. You can see a breakdown of you and your group's damage and healing, among many other things! I personally recommend Details! as it is the most intricate of the three addons and provides, what I've found to be, the most accurate information pull-to-pull.
WeakAuras
- The most commonly used player/npc tracking addon is WeakAuras. This allows you to create custom icons, timers and bars to track a massive variety of things. Just a few examples are icons for buffs and debuffs, cooldown timers for things like your potions, health, resources and even boss and npc abilities. I strongly recommend this addon for anyone who is looking to improve their play!
Gnosis or Quartz
- These two addons are both custom cast bar addons. These are particularly useful for healers and ranged DPS. They allow you to make your cast bar any size, color or texture you would like. You can also move it around to fit with the rest of your UI! I personally use Gnosis.
Full UI Packages (More CPU intensive)
I can only recommend one complete UI package,
ElvUI
. ElvUI is a complete UI overhaul, which you see depicted in my screenshot above. This will completely overlay the look of every aspect within your UI. Some like it, some don't.
You decide! Download it
here!
Communication Within a Raid or Dungeon!
Being able to communicate effectively is arguably the most important aspect of an MMO. You are playing a massive MULTIPLAYER game after all. Because of this, players choose to use many different platforms for communication. The following are the most common forms of communication:
In-game Chat
Discord
Mumble
Ventrillo
Skype
In-game chat goes without saying. If you are doing casual content, there is often no reason to join together on a VOIP or "Voice Over IP." Some important things to communicate include when you are going to bloodlust, timewarp, etc. What adds or secondary targets are the most important within a fight, movement, positioning, etc. In-game chat can generally service these requirements. However, in higher level PvE content, you may be asked to join a voice program like Discord or Mumble. Some groups even require you to join in order to participate.
Imagine that something abruptly changes on the fly within a fight. For example, your tank suddenly dies! The raid leader may call for a resurrection to be cast on that player, but if you are too engrossed in doing damage, healing or otherwise, you may not react as quickly. Perhaps the raid leader wants the player to stay dead as they've disconnected or died intentionally. Should you resurrect them if you are able to? You wouldn't know without being in the voice chat to hear the call. You can also react faster to sound queues, as your brain processes them faster than visual chat-queues. Please consider that this may not be the case for every player, but generally it is true. Lastly, consider how frustrating and inefficient it would be to physically stop playing the game in order to type something to the raid group as opposed to simply saying it over voice chat. If you've never done it, try out voice programs sometime.
Being Prepared for an Encounter!
Now that we have covered the majority of the tips I will provide in this guide, I will present to you what may be the most important tip of all: know the fight.
The bare minimum you should do is look into the Dungeon Journal that is available in-game. This should at least provide you with a basic understanding of some of the mechanics of a fight. What it may not illustrate, is how the boss/adds move, how the particular mechanics interact with each other and how you can react to said mechanics.
When you venture into high level PvE content, the mechanics and abilities of the bosses will generally become more complex than you may be used to. Because of this, you should prepare yourself ahead of time as much as possible. This is especially prevalent in Mythic raiding! There are many resources out there to learn from. Wowhead even has a collection of boss fight guides that are very detailed and well written. You can find those
here!
That being said, there are also many sites with other tips. Feel free to search around for more examples of this.
There are also very popular guide creators on YouTube. The most popular of which are likely the guys over at
FatbossTV
. "Loz" and "Alex" are the two brains behind the channel. They are consistent in PTR (Public Testing Realm) tests for new raids and dungeons. They often publish first look videos for PTR encounters, as well as Heroic and Mythic guides for the fights a few weeks after they go live. You can find their channel
here!
Don't go into a fight without knowing your role within the raid! Take your knowledge of the class you play and see how it applies to the specific mechanics and creatures you may have to deal with in a PvE setting. There is
always
something you can do to improve. Never settle or become complacent!
Movement and Mechanical Execution!
From first hand experience, I can say that you do NOT want to be the person who is known for messing up mechanics. It is better to be known for mechanical execution than it is for high damage and healing. There is an old saying that has been around WoW for nearly it's entire existence -
"a dead DPS does no DPS."
Take this to heart and in the most literal manner possible, because it is simply true. It does not matter if you are the best damage or healing in the group for 90% of the fight. If you die in a critical moment, you are effectively doing nothing to help your team. You should always prioritize properly executing the mechanics of a fight before damage or healing. If a dangerous mechanic is going to happen, focus on staying alive rather than topping the meters. There aren't many feelings worse than causing a wipe because you couldn't do mechanics or dying on the first kill of a progression boss because you messed up. Don't get me wrong, things happen to the best of us, but there's no reason you can't refine your awareness and execution within a raid at any time.
The last point I want to cover is movement - something that is overlooked far too often. A lot of players tend to move about sporadically during raid encounters. This can certainly cause issues on fights like Gul'dan. Melee standing on the tank will cause tank deaths to
邪能镰刀
. Ranged standing in the wrong spot may cause deaths to
强化邪能束缚
. These are just a few examples of how poor positioning can cause deaths, but also take into consideration how it may affect your damage or healing! If you can minimize your movement by preemptive positioning you will certainly see improvements to your output. This can be seen very clearly with classes like Holy Paladin and Affliction Warlock. Just be mindful of how you can perfect the movement in an encounter to improve yourself as a player. Be two steps ahead of yourself.
I would like to finish by thanking you for checking out this guide. If you would like to see more, be sure to rate the guide above!
