These took a really long time for me. This was back when my Rogue was level 55, a few months ago. There were other Rogues in the area farming these oozes, and the respawn rate isn't fast at all. But it was worth it! I grabbed the Ebon Mask as my reward, and it lasted a good bit!

I do recommend any non-raiding rogue or pre-60 Rogue to take this quest on.

Kill everything around the Ooze spawn because they share the spawn rate with the other beasts around. They are pickpocketable ;)

Finished as a L50 NE R. Found one ooze with a fragment far North of the 65,25 - 77,27 "good spawn" coordinates...near the shore to the North.

Returned to the "good spawn" coordinates and killed enough oozes to get 8 more fragments. Then the spawn rate seemed to really slow down, and when the oozes did respawn, the didn't drop fragments. Very frustrating. Ended up killing everything in sight (challenging at L50 because of the flight patrol patterns of the NPCs)...and that didn't seem to help either.

1.5 hours after getting the 9th fragment...I finally got the 10th one...at 1 o'clock in the morning. I wasn't quitting until I got it.

Definitely a low drop rate from just killing, and even from pick pocketing, had to kill/PP around 20 to get all 10.

Make sure you attempt to pickpocket the oozes before you attack them, it will cut down your grinding time considerably.

The chimeras in the immediate area share the spawns with the forest oozes, so if you can't see any forest oozes, start clearing those chimera.

This was more time consuming than hard for me, at lvl 51 I had to stealth around 74, 28 (Just above the cliffs) dodging alot of lvl 53+ beasts filtering out these oozes.
I found that if I broke stealth I was generally dead, so I pickpocketed all the oozes I came across and was supprised at how quickly I found 10 fragments.
They carry them in lots of 1, 2 and 3.

Really annoying quest.
When you first get there odds are there won't be any Forest Ooze's, so you have to go and kill Mistwing Ravager's which are somehow connected to the Forest Ooze spawn. Both are 52-53.

Once you see a Forest Ooze, pickpocket it first then attack. Shortly after your opening move it will try to cast a debuff that will slow your movement and attack speed for 2 min. It's easy to tell when it's casting if you have cast bars turned on or you hear the casting sound and or you see the spell effect. Immediately try to Kick or Kidney Shot the Ooze. The spell seems to have a 10 second or so cooldown.

Carefully pick where you plan on fighting and expect to spend close to an hour on this quest.

The ozoo's dont respawn! its driving me crazy!
i have been patroling the ozoo area for 2 hours and still no ozoo's...

I noticed that the Ooze's and the Hypogriphs in the area share the same spawn points.
Might be worth it to kill the hippo's when you're waiting anyway, it repopped Ooze's for me ;)

old method but still very useful
set a macro /target Forest Ooze
bind the macro to a hotkey

get on mount , then running around and spam the hotkey
u will get one every 20 sec

stealth , kill and loot

What I did as a lvl 50 BE rogue was to first pickpocket the Ooze's and then attack them. I got from one Ooze's 4 fragments after pickpoeckting around 5-8 of them I got all the fragments.

respawn sucked and they were very rare took me and hour+.
i should have tried killing the hippogriphs prolly would hve helped consierably

I've noticed an improvement in drop rate as of April 19th, 2007. I've gotten about 6 Encoded Fragments in 10 minutes of Pick Pocketing/Killing the Oozes far north east of Azshara.

I went to the cords that were mentioned, and only found about 5 oozes. I pick pocketed them and got 2, and another from one acorss the area. The spawn rate sucks and so daoes the "drop" rate.Plus there is the 53Elites running around and other 52+ stuff flying around. I got too 3 tonight and gave up. This quest is so annoying.

I wouldn't get too excited if you get the first 5-6 in a short amount of time. For me, it was the last 3 that took about 30 minutes or so to get. Seemed very random though, about 1 every 10 minutes.

One method you might want to try if your all alone, and you don't have to worry about them being killed is to join a group and use the raid target icons to mark all the oozes you find. Then once your done spotting them go from ooze to ooze pickpocketing them. Once you pickpocket em all wait a couple minutes for their pockets to respawn then do it all over again. Again only do this if you don't have to worry about other people killing your oozes.

Make sure to pick pocket before owning the poor oozes, since there's a slight chance to get one, and even two, Encoded Fragments. Also wear gloves so your fingers don't get slimy!

I was looking for oozes and couldnt find many so i checked out wowhead and said kill the hippographs because they have same respawn. Well i started killing the thunderhead patriarchs and they drop the encoded fragments dont know if it is upgrade with patch but made it easier. coords 70,28 aproximent.

After the last patch the quest was changed from just oozes to any beasts in Azshara. Of course I didnt read the quest description first and headed to the ooze spot, killed a hippo and got a fragment. Quest is much easier now.

Grind all beasts North East of Azshara, they drop the fragments at like 1 out of 3. Stay on the upper edge, don't fall into the pit of mobs.

hmmk.. and why only oozes? the quest says beasts for azshara.. any beast. I got 8 from spiders getting to those oozes, and actually got the 2 last ones from spiders too

Kill everything... i got drops from Mistwing ravager and Mosshoof Courser so i guess any beast around the area can drop the fragment and they all appeared to be easier prey since they dont have the slow down debuff.

Extremely easy quest, completed it in about 5 minutes. I pick pocketed 3 oozes and each gave 2 of the fragments, and one of them dropped a fragment. For the last 3, I just killed the moose around the area, and they dropped them.

I dont know why everyone is talking about the ooze's, but the fact is you can kill any beast around Azshara and the droprate is pretty high to boot.
The only reason wowhead and thotbott say the droprate is so low, is due to all the kills of the mobs when a character is not on the quest.

So, to clarify, just pickpocket the ooze's and kill the beasts around them; the quest will take you no time at all!

Let me tell you guys something.. These items drops from all of the beasts in the area around 75.25.
"Your best chance is to kill the beasts of Azshara, since they have a tendency to pick up just about anything."
They don't say that for nothing you know :p Slay all the chiemeras and griffins and w/e and you will get it quicker.
Ofc, if you see a forest ooze, pick pocket it and kill it.
I just wanted to tell you that forest oozes are not the only ones to drop these.

Maybe I was just lucky? Took me 10 minutes! Don't stick to the Ooze, basically clear the area even the Mooshoof drop them!

guys dont skip this quest
its rather easy i did it at 50 in about 40 mins
pickpocket the oozes and then kill em and if theres no respawns kill the mooses and hippogryph lookin things and they drop the encoded fragments too

I will also recommend to kill hippogryphs, since you must be level 50 to start the quest i am sure you can handle a few hippos. Key will ad a nice xp and they have a decent droprate, i got mine in 30 minutes and about 19k xp. I highly recommend this solution.

Speaking of killing the thunderhead hippogryphs (which was an excellent suggestion). They dropped the long elegant feathers which was an added unforseen bonus which helped with the following hinterlands quest

I recomend you only to kill the Forest Oozes because it has the highest drop rate. I got it done very quickly. The coords for the Forest Oozes are 47,72.

It's a pretty crappy drop rate.. for me the Mosshoof's had the best rate.. got 7/10 from them. Also watch out for the 52 Elite Giant walking around. ;] Also, it seems that none of the beasts North of the Haldarr Encampment would drop them at all.. coincidence maybe.. but i had the best luck south of it.

Maybe it's me, but I've probably decimated Azshara's beast population in the past however long I've been doing this, but I've only got ONE fragment >.< Hippos, coursers, spiders, oozes, you name it. I don't recall having this issue on my other rogues.

Of course this is probably just Murphy's Law kicking in, since I was a moron and waited til the last minute to do this chain since I've got someone running me thru ST. I guess that'll learn me! XD

Not a bad quest...
At level 50, the mobs are quite easy xp. The spiders drop some valuable ironweb spider silk and if you know skinning (which is not uncommon as a rogue) the hippogryphs and mosshoofs will give you thick leather and some rugged leather now and then.

There is a chance you can get more than one of these when you pickpocket the ooze. I have not received more than one from killing anything, but received 2 from one ooze I pickpocketed.

Worked this quest in conjunction with http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=7842 in the 16,33 area. Kinda wandered around killing the Thunderhead hippogryphs and Mosshoof Runners.

Definitely the hippogryphs have the best drop rate. The timber--recluse spiders drop the fragments too but the hippo's were the best drop rate and there are many more of them in one area versus the spiders. I didn't have anything else drop fragments for me but I didn't farm any other kinds of 'beasts' long enough for it to probably.

To save everyone time, I spent an hour pickpocketing for my fragments, but on my last 3 i was attacked by 2 thunderhead consorts and they both dropped a fragment. So i killed 1 more and got another. So idk if i got lucky but 3 in a row was awesome...70,28 is great for thunderheads and oozes for pickpocketing. GL all :)

There is a good drop rate at (16,62) from the Hippogryphs. You just need to kill them, not pickpocket. You CAN'T pickpocket if its not Humanoid.

Just kill the Hippogryphs and spiders to the south of the furbolgs. Watch out for the patrolling elite giant and you be fine.

Yes, before it was patched this was easily the worst quest in the game. Originally the fragments ONLY dropped off of the forest oozes. Given the remoteness of the area, the small number of oozes, crappy drop rate, crappy respawn rate, and their shared spawn point with the chimeras, it used to take some players DAYS to finish this quest. As with most all pre-level 60 quests, this has been vastly simplified. Now you can kill any beasts in Ashara and you are done in ten minutes.

Even though beasts aren't very numerous in Azshara you CAN farm these at some better places:

There's a fairly larger spawn of misc beasts at around 21, 54
If you wish to spend more time running but less time killing, I suggest going far to the east until you reach ~ 82, 19 where gryphons and chimeras are. These are numerous!
