The world quest for killing nathanos rewards an ilevel 115 weapon from the darkshore warfront. You do not need to do the icecrown storyline quests or have the 5x argent crusade commision quest to be able to kill nathanos. You can check to see if you can do the quest by looking at the eastern plaguelands, he will show up similar to a world boss.

Anyone else not getting the weapon?

Edit: apparently they've identified a bug and hotfixed the issue: "We can confirm this was not intended and our developers have worked to hotfix this error. At this time, any affected character will be able to kill Nathanos once more to receive loot even if they are a ghost at the time he is defeated."

Killed him on my rogue. Wq said I'd get a mace (despite being sub), actually got a dagger.
Did it about a half hour later on my ww monk and got NOTHING even though it said I'd get a piece of 115 gear.
Guess it's a roll of the dice whether or not it's broken as of Tuesday November 10th.

Killed him on my BM Hunter....got a polearm, they say that they fixed it. But now have to wait a week to find out when I can do it again! Not happy!

Where to get the quest? Or is it no actual quest in your log just a random drop? I killed him 3 times .... nothing and I can't find a quest. Yes I finished the scourge opening ending in Icecrown.

You can get the quest in Stormwind after completing dailies in Icecrown, the quest name is: 女妖的勇士 it rewards 70g and 5 Argent Commendations and a cool cinematic. Note that if you kill nathanos without having the quest you won't see the cinematic

OK what this site doesn't tell you is the actual quest is called ! You get it in Org or SW after you finished the Scourge Opening that ends in Icecrown from the same guy you got the starter quests in Org or SW. I killed Nathanos %^&*!head 3 times with no drop before I found this out lol

You get this quest at Orgrimmar (probably Stormwind as alliance), NPC is called (Light's Hope Messenger) standing next to the auction house.

Note that this is a World Quest, just like other World Bosses. You do not need to pick up any quest in Orgrimmar or Stormwind. You can just go to the Eastern Plaguelands to the quest marker on the map.

Edit: I did not say there is no lead-in quest. I just meant, you do not need the lead-in quest if you are just interested in the loot, i.e. weapon drop. Thanks @Elennoko.

Somehow one of my alts is stuck in some kind of phase, and I can't see any groups I join to fight him. He's there, but it's just me and him.
I can low level people in EPL, but no other 50s. Dunno how to fix it.

For Alliance players: This quest is offered by the NPC Light's Hope Messenger standing next to Commander Gregor in front of the portcullis that leads from the Trade District out of Stormwind. It's easy to miss if there is a large group of players on top of Gregor, who gives you the questline that leads you to Icecrown.

Edit: Just checked on an alt, The Banshee's Champion becomes available at the same time as A Message from Icecrown

A quick tip, specially for melees near him if you see him casting the 4s-天灾箭矢, GET OFF HIM BEFORE HE ENDS CASTING, OR YOU MAKE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DPS HIM FOR A WHILE. Specially if there is no room around him, he'll target 3+ people, just do a quick move off him then back, to drop the poison off.

It slows and deals high ticking damage, and if your in a group, and your healers are just DPSing instead, you're doomed to die a lot. The other deadly spell is his Volley, more easily avoided, but uses it mostly on ranged, so keep moving every time you're not casting anything and eyes open on his casts.

For Horde players: This quest is offered by the NPC standing next to 指挥官斯洛格 in front of the old auction house in Orgrimmar.

Some findings from me killing him with a bunch of different toons:

He drops an Ilvl 115 weapon every time the first time you kill him (presumably per ID).
For casters this weapon can be 1H or 2H
For Fury Warriors this weapon is a 1H, so change your loot spec to Arms beforehand!
He doesn't drop Offhands or Shields
The quest 女妖的勇士 becomes available after the lead-in quests at the Argent Crusade (after 天灾归来.
You don't need to be on the quest if you're just after the drop.
If you are on the quest, you'll get a cinematic on top.
Turn-in is in Orgrimmar at 洛瑟玛·塞隆 and rewards 5 Argent Commendations and some 70 gold.

For the Horde, you will get automatic quest, when you finish the little line saving crossroads and get back to the OG you will get the quest from NPC near Argent tent No need to go in to IC. :)

This is an elite weekly world quest during the pre-event for Shadowlands.
Its reward is 亡灵卫兵装备箱 in epic quality. I've opened with 4 alts so far and always got a weapon.

In case anyone is wondering if you can see him/ get loot without having the quest to kill him, the answer is yes. My alt just went straight to him and killed him and got loot.

*Also, if you're wondering if you need the weapons for transmog--they are the exact same ones from the warfront cache, just scaled to 115 ilvl.

Alliance: 哨兵装备箱 (Weapons only)
Horde: 亡灵卫兵装备箱 (Weapons only)

Bonus info: It will drop a weapon for ANY of your possible specs and will NOT respect your loot specialization.

Bottom line: If you are too far away when Nathanos dies - you will get acknowledgement for the kill - but no loot.

Just to get this back to the top of the comments: If you die late in the fight (i.e. without enough time to run back prior to him dying) - do not release. You will get the notifications awarding the kill against Nathanos, but no loot. The awarding of the loot is distance based, and releasing takes you to the graveyard that is a 433 yards away per the game's navigation system. If he dies on the run-back to the combat site, you may be too far out and miss it. Of note, the distance to get back in range for loot receipt is about 150 yards from Nathanos' location, so about 30 seconds of running to get back to the point where you are back in range to receive credit. As an additional factor to keep in mind, the fight goes to the cut scene when he is at about 10% health (about 598K out of his 5986K), so if you are too far out when he is near this point, then you risk not getting anything.

WQ versus normal quest:

Nathanos is a world quest that also functions as a normal quest for story line purposes. This means that you can turn in the quest for the story aspect with Genn, but you may have not got the WQ completion credit because of being too far away when he died. This is confusing, since even if you are too far away to get loot and no WQ completion credit, you still get the notification of the kill after he dies. The bottom line is to check your world map to see if you got WQ credit or not. Kill him again if you did not. (this was also Blizzard-recommended from a previous post). The loot should drop if this was the case.

After reading other posts that reported this, I returned to fight him again, got WQ completion and got the 115 weapon drop. If you did the quest, received no loot because of being too far away, and then turned it in for completion - check the world map to see if his world quest is still active.

I have to say that if this quest didn't reward a 115 item it wouldn't be worth doing more than once, the ridiculous amount of AoE makes it really tedious.

I got my priest to 50 today after taking a break to recover from surgery, so my priest didn't have the required reputations to unlock World Quests. Checking the map upon arriving in Undercity, there was no WQ marker, just the regular quest marker for the 5 badges. I was very disappointed, but figured I would go kill him anyway. Good news, everyone! Even if you don't have World Quests unlocked, you still get the weapon! Now go kill Nathanos and get your 115 weapon!
