Does a trainee show up when we get to Ardenweald? When i picked up the quest in my sanctum, I didn't end up with an NPC following me.

I did a dozen quests in Ardenweald and there was no trainee I could see. Probably a bugged quest.

I got the "buff (spell)" 新兵 once I arrived in Ardenweald. Randomly the Trainee will have a type of 'Shield Slam' AOE ability to help you out and it does a fairly significant amount of damage. I haven't been able to determine yet what the CD or what triggers the ability yet.

I have the quest. I selected a trainee. I do world quests in Bastion and he doesn't show up the lazy bastard. Still 0/3 after completing 3 world quests...... ffs.

The trainee must be Deos! Today is the first time I've seen them since my original post!
While you have Deos with you, whenever you kill a mob, any mob, there is a chance that they will say:

I see something on the ground, here. Come, take a look!

This spawns a lootable object on the ground which can give you a wide variety of items.
Loot includes:

Family-specific Flawless Battle-Stones to upgrade pets to rare quality
4-6 Family-specific Battle-Training Stones to increase a pet's level by one
灵魂净化药水
灵魂抗毒药剂
幻影火焰药水
多孔磨刀石
暗纹平衡石
跨界聚簇宝石
蜜饯核桃
神肴仙露
午夜星椒
风干的卷心菜叶
销魂法力药水

This ability seems to be on about a 5 minute cooldown. I decided to just do some farming of mobs for a few hours and like clockwork, every five minutes I'd get another emote from the trainee. When I say any mob, I mean I was able to get a proc from it off of killing battle pets with attacks. It appears that Deos needs enough time to aggro/engage the target for it to count as a kill, so I've been using instant-cast, non-harmful spells on critters, like silences, cleanses, etc. to get Deos to kill them himself.

Once you turn the Calling quest in, your trainee will unsurprisingly stop following you. So if you want to get these things, I suggest holding off on turning it in!
