This quest broke at around the 2.0/TBC patch, preventing new blacksmiths from obtaining the follow-up (The Demon Forge) and thus the plans to create Demon Forged Breastplates.

As of Sept. 29 (four days after the 2.2.0 patch), Lorax's Tale and the subsequent follow-up are once again working as intended :D

The "tale", told in the form of a dialogue, is as follows:

Lorax: "Amir gul xi azrathud, karkun."

Player: "You will have to excuse me, Lorax, I do not speak 'crazy'."

Lorax: "Bite your tongue, <race>, lest I rip it from your skull case and use it as a horn warmer."

Player: "My apologies, I did not realize that you could understand what I was saying. What is it you are doing out here?"

Lorax: "What it is that I do, of course. I brood. I lament. I hate, I plot. When that cycle is complete I brood again. What is it you want from me? I have much on my mind."

Player: "Do you? Perhaps you should tell me what it is that is bothering you."

Lorax: "You?

"<Lorax laughs>.

"That is doubtful. I stand in these ruins and dream. Dream of the day I catch that miserable thief, Goraluk Anvilcrack.

"We had a deal, him and I. A deal that he broke. Betrayed."

Player: "What deal?"

Lorax: "I would teach him how to demon forge in exchange for his soul. The soul of a Blackrock orc is worth very little but in these trying times a soul, any soul, is better than none at all."

Player: "So how did he break the deal?"

Lorax: "He took the unforged rune covered breastplate, used in the making of the demon forged breastplate and ran away without making payment. A fool, I am not, however...the unforged chestpiece is useless without knowledge or the recipe to apply said knowledge.

"I wonder..does he sit safely in his city of Blackrock Spire and attempt to create the item from the raw material? I know he dare not leave!"

Player: "Perhaps I can be of some assistance. I will make a deal with you, Satyr. I shall recover this unforged breastplate and slay the beast. In exchange for this task, you will teach me how to create the breastplate."

Worked for me today (4/17/09).

Counted for Loremaster of Kalimdor

The follow-up quest, The Demon Forge, did NOT, and didn't open any new quests.

Did NOT work for me today. Is there some sort of pre-req? I'm trying my best to do Loremaster and saw this as a questgiver on the map, but no dice. :(

I know the follow-up is Blacksmith only, but is this one also BS only? If it is not, it either has a pre-req or is broken again. >.<

I took my lvl 64 hunter to him today, and talked to him a couple weeks ago, and got nothing. All he says is something in Satyr language, and I can't get either quest...

3.2.2 and still broken.
Either there's some pre-req that nobody has posted or he just doesn't work anymore.

10/04/09, patch 3.2.2 and this quest worked for me.

80 undead warrior with blacksmithing. I was able to get the followup, also

So do you have to have Blacksmithing to get this quest? Since he doesn't give the quest to me, and i don't have Blacksmithing skill on my chara.

I was able to obtain this quest on a character with 450 Blacksmithing, and was NOT able to obtain it on a character without BS, on the same day.

I think it's fair to assume that you need Blacksmithing in order to see this quest.

Counts toward Loremaster of Kalimdor as of June 2010 which is all I was caring about.
