It doesn't seem that you need to be in the party or even have the quest to get credit for killing him, as long as you contribute.

He does an AoE debuff that reduces damage dealt that needs to be dispelled if you don't stand outside of the red ring when it goes off.

You can only kill one of the animals a day for credit.
