This quest might look hard in the start. In fact it isn't.
The best tactic is zoom your camera all down and get an eagle view.
Go to the Bonfire. (Big fire) And click the torch. Now run after the shadow.
Be a little in front of it. When it's almost down, place yourself so it will hit you.
When you get the first torch, it will not be thrown as long up the air.

I'm sorry to say, and I'll probably get voted down or deleted, but this quest is bull and nothing more than a time sink for blizz to suck more money out of you as you waste your time trying to catch random trajectories of a torch. follow the shadow? awesome... try and distinguish between yours and the other 100 shadows on the ground as all the tools looking to try something new throw their torches up trying to get pixel flowers for garbage rewards.

If you're totally geared out and just looking for something to break the monotony and make you pull your hair out... this is the quest for you.

If not, pass. there's a million other better things to do.

Like watch your toenails grow.

If you can't heal yourself then bring along consumables, cuz I can guarentee that if you don't and that you're a hunter, you'll end up dead.

I've done this on a few different toons and this is what I've picked up so far:

Don't do this quest in UC as it's difficult to see the shadow. Org is crowded. I've had the best luck in TB. (No advice for Alliance.)
Turn up your spell detail so you can see the shadow.
Ignore the torch and focus only on the shadow.
Stay ahead of the shadow. If you are directly under it or just behind it, you are more likely to fail.

Druids can catch the torches in travel form, so if you shift right after you toss the torch the first time, this quest will be a lot easier.

Hella fun once you get the hang of it.

This quest was extraordinarily frustrating in Orgrimmar. I flew to Thunder Bluff and finished it quickly. Staying ahead of the shadow is essentially the entire trick. As long as other players' torches do not confuse you, this quest is a quick and simple daily.

For Alliance, if you go to the Exodar, it makes this quest a lot easier - the light floor makes the shadows stand out and there aren't too many people. Might be also easier if you do it at a time when most people aren't online.

Also, for those that can't see the shadows, make sure your spell detail settings under the video menu is maxed out, otherwise the shadows of the torches don't show up ;)

Just watch, if your standing on the edges of the fire, for some reason the shadow will not show up.

Also Draenei seem to have an issue (My guess is similar to Lurker) that causes this to be a headache, and long.

From Kisirani (Blizzard Event Designer)

1) Less populated cities are better, as there are fewer torches flying around.
2) Zoom your camera all the way out and move it to roughly top-down, in order to track the shadow better.
3) Follow the shadow, not the torch, and lead it a little bit -- stand a bit in front of where you think it's going to fall.
4) Speed buffs can help. ;)

Druids in cheetah form and Shamans in Ghost Wolf have it a bit easier on this quest. The speed bonus from the first two make it a snap to catch up with the torch after each time you throw it. Otherwise make sure you have your graphics turned up all the way, and your FPS is above 6. If it's below 6 you'll lag just enough that you'll usually fall behind on the third or forth torch and get yourself blown up. Exodar seems to be the best city for it as well. Not as many weird shadows and people or obstacles in the way.

I've had the best results in Org by zooming all the way out and looking directly down on my self. Also use the mouse to turn around right as you catch it because it gonna be thrown in the opposite direction you were just traveling.

I'd have to say this quest is my favorite besides the steal the flame ones. I find the city you do this in can make a big difference. I'm alliance and find that Ironforge is the best due to the shadow being quite easy to see on the floor. It is a bit harder with other people around, but i find that more challenging and fun. Stormwind is pretty good as well, but i find the hardest to be Darnassus. I haven't had a chance to try it in Exodar yet, but i assume it to be pretty similar to IF due to the similar floors and being indoors. I also find it easier if you hold down the right mouse button while chasing the shadow to be able to follow it more accurately when you throw it. I can usually complete it on the first try.

I love just hanging out by the bonfire laughing at people trying to catch the torch, but i also usually try to heal them as well as give them tips and congrats if they complete it. I've been playing WoW on and off for over a year now and i find that Midsummer is the most fun i've had at an event so far.

I've done this quest MANY times, and I gotta say it starts to *!@# me off. When I do this quest in Stormwind City (I'm an Alliance) I usually have no problems. But I've found out that when I do this quest with my alt in Ironforge, I fail for unknown reasons. For example, I start throwing, I stay a bit ahead of the shadow and then suddenly -BOOM-, on a clear platform? I don't know if im doing something wrong or are there something invisible (:P).

Anyways, I've also found out that when I throw the first Torch into the air in Stormwind City (Don't know if it matters where you do this) and then mount up with epic mount, when I catch the first torch and throw it up in the air again, I can't see the shadow. Maybe a bug or maybe blizzard wanted to do it this way so we couldn't do this quest with mount.

I find putting the camera distance to the max and zooming out to the max works great, gives an overhead view, and you can see the shadow/torch while it's in the air.

Easiest way to do it:
Alt + Z to hide UI
Zoom into your guy, so it's first person
Put the the throw torch to your primary hotbar (so that you just hit like 1 to throw it)
Look up in the air
Hold down right mouse, and move around following the torch in the air.

You can do this in any populated city as it's easier to follow than the shadows, and you can see exactly where it's going.

Along with the tips above try this. Do the quest in the least populated city it your server (Mine is Thunder Bluff or Silvermoon.) I recommend this because I kept getting my torches confused with other players and kept failing. Looking at the shadow of the torch also helps, even at night in Thunder Bluff I was able to see the torches shadow. I play a shaman and I found that I could start the quest in ghost wolf form and the movement speed bonus really helped when i needed to get to the torches. I found that regular speed was too slow maybe I'm just a noob. So to sum it up:
1. low population city like Thunder Bluff
2. watch the shadow of the torch
3. increase movement speed to help catch all the torches

I found that the easiest way to catch the torch is to get your camera to overlook your character. So you can see your character straight down. Now simply go the the fire and lit a torch up and follow it. Piece of cake.

This way I made it on my first try.

Just a reminder, you DO get credit for doing this and the Torch Tossing quest even if you're in a raid. Tested 5min ago.

and to the guy saying shamans / druids have it easier, think again. you can mount doing this quest.
simply click your mount the very moment your torch gets airborne, you'll have enough time to mount up and run towards the torch. much easier.

Having 10+ people running around and shadows everywhere isn't pleasant.

I've been having major graphical issues with this thing this year.

Last year was no problem, 1-shot it for the achievement.

However, since then I've race changed, and lost my achievement credit, so I went to do it again this year, and it started me on the "more" quest, so obviously remembering that I've done the initial quest....GG blizz... anyway...

The torch is exploding in midair, landing far from the graphic of the shadow, and the shadow is disappearing at times.

I have a mid-high end system, with all the latest drivers, I have no issues like this while raiding.

I've tried on high graphic settings, and low. Tried in several capital cities, all to the same end, RAGE!

anyone have any suggestions?

Don't even attempt to complete this in Orgrimmar, too crowded, go to any of the other cities.

Terrible quest. Not sure if I have some kind of latency or something(Usually never experience any kind of lag or latency). But it's totally random if I can catch it or not.. sometimes I stand just beneath it, just like I did the 20.000.000 times before and it still fails. And sometimes it just dissappears. Yuck, should be redesigned.

If you're having trouble with this, a good tip:

You can jump and catch your torch early if it is about to hit the ground and you are under it.

I was having the same problem others were having in completing this quest: the torches seem to explode way too soon. I tried many times in Ogrimmar and it was impossible. I just about gave up, hoping Blizz would hotfix it. But then I tried Thunderbluff. So much easier! There is still a problem with early explosions, but the distances are shorter and it's much easier to anticipate the next throw. On two toons, it took me only three or four tries each. You need to turn around before you catch the torch so you can quickly move in the direction of the next throw.

Quest is under effect of Blizzard rubber band skill level system. If you are right in the right spot it might not be your fault. The difficulty setting might be set harder on your account. It does affect how large the capturing radius of torch is.

Another small detail to make quest easier go straight towards torch do not strafe. Server side moving prediction system does affect your spot. So even if you seem to be in correct spot in client side the server might be predicting another "wrong" position if you strafe.

Small tip for Shamans, you can do this entire thing in Ghost Wolf form to give you that little movement speed boost. Combined with looking straight down from above and using the "follow the shadow" technique, this made the difference for me.

I have to say, this is the most annoying quest I've ever done. As a shaman I use ghost wolf form to make it "easier", but even so I have to spend so much time doing it. If I'm lucky, I can turn in the quest after 20 mins of trying. What I don't understand is that it's okay if the torch hits my back or tail, but fails for sure if it hits my head. And sometimes the torch seems to explode before it even hits the ground?

I have no high latency problems or troubles to see the shadow, and I've followed all the possible tips people have written before.

To put it simply, the quest is bugged. Not exactly, however, it effectively is. This is because with a very crowded area the latency of the game doesn't let it go well, even if the latency of the client is printed to be low.

tl;dr: Don't do it in a crowded area.

The easiest way to complete this quest, by far, is to go to the four cities of the opposing faction, steal a flame from their bonfire, and complete the four quests. After turning them in, the "More Torch Catching" quest also auto-completes. VERY weird, but true. The "quests" for stealing flames from bonfires will pop up after you've clicked and snagged one in each of the main cities. Turn them all in to complete, and get this ruddy torch-garbage out of your log at the same time.

It's a very stupid quest, if there are multiple people trying to do it you all see each other's torch shadow which makes it worse.

Also there were times i throwed the next torch without catching one while playing with 50ms..

Should be updated with new legion UI enhancements, this is still using BC wow tech.

Make sure you are stopped when the torch hits.

Follow the shadow as best you can but stop moving before it hits and you will catch it.
It instantly gets re-thrown - repeat.

Do it in Silvermoon, vastly less difficult. I think it's the ruff surface terrain in Org jacking things up.

Today in Org I was seeing someone struggling to complete this quest, so I'd like to share my way of doing this every other year. Many nice hints in other comments, I might repeat some, so, here we go:

- Face your camera all the way down, so you can only see the top of your character head/shoulders. This make it easier to see the torch shadow.
- Always walk a bit in front of the torch shadow. I'm not sure if this is due to my latency (around 150ms) but all those years, I always walk in front of the shadow, not under it
- As soon as the torch hits your character, it will be thrown again in the opposite direction (mostly), so be prepared to turn into another direction. Walk sideways (strafe) holding your mouse left button and using A and D to walk (or Q and E if you use that). use this technique along with using the camera all the way from the top to bottom.
- Every movement bonus you class have can be used to catch a hard throw. Use it
- If you have a druid friend, he can carry you using 坐骑形态. I just carried a lagging stranger with this and it worked just fine.
