This quest might look hard in the start. In fact it isn't.
The best tactic is zoom your camera all down and get an eagle view.
Go to the Bonfire. (Big fire) And click the torch. Now run after the shadow.
Be a little in front of it. When it's almost down, place yourself so it will hit you.
When you get the first torch, it will not be thrown as long up the air.

Probably the stupidest daily quest ever designed, especially with a moderatly high latency (over 500 ms) makes it near impossible to get 10 in a row. After an hour the highest I could manage was 8. Won't be wasting my time again.

To heck with this quest. If one other person is there... ONE, you're screwed. I could not tell after the third catch to whom owned what torch. Bad quest IMHO.

my best advice for this, alliance, do not do this in ironforge or stormwind, i did it in exodar because it is pretty much abandoned, nobody else was there so there was no confusion.

I found this quest to be easier once you go to the interface options menu and activate click to move, and make sure to have a birds-eye view of the place so you can see the shadow of the torch once it's thrown. All you have to do after that is just click the shadow.

Just some helpful tip for the horde players who's having trouble with this quest (being able to see the shadow mainly). It's best to do this in Thunder Bluff. Haven't really tried the other city yet but orgrimmar (for myself at least) is the worst place to track the shadow of the torch. While doing this quest there, on the initial throw the torch shadow appear for 1-2 second after I threw it then disappear, reappearing right when its about to hit the ground.

Even 44 ms worth of latency appears to be too much. I've had the torch explode while landing directly on top of me quite a few times. It's awfully sensitive to even moderate lag.

I noticed my problem was that the torch would always land slightly ahead of me. To compensate, I try to overrun the shadow slightly and keep it barely behind me until its about to hit the ground. Now it take me one or two attempts to complete the torch catching quests.

I think i found the trick.

You need good use of mouse and keyboard.
Place camera view above your head so you have indeed eagle view from above with max zoom. Spell Detail on max, so the torch shadow is visible on the ground.

Now, put the Unlit Torches item in toolbar.
Keep pressing rightbutton of your mouse now. This makes walk direction possible under your mouse control. Start the throwing torch.
Move with only left and right direction (A / D or cursor).
You walk now in side direction. You may move mouse to left or right to change walk direction.
If you press right first, walk at right side of shadow.
Use when you walk, randomly with W / S (up/down cursor) keys. You must walk like drunken man near the shadow. Yes, you press randomly at the direction keys, keeping correcting and near the shadow. And keep in motion!

If you follow 'perfectly' to the shadow, the chance you miss the torch is very great.
But with drunken walk method around the shadow, keeping walking even you catch the torch. The chance you catch succesfully is more bigger. Like you try catch pathetic the torch, but it works better.

And when you catch it, keep walking but in opposite direction from the previous throw. The chance is big it follows indeed the next throw path.

Keep in motion around the shadow, don't stay there still for some seconds.
That works me with sidewalk and randomly like drunken man trick.
Continue with rightbutton mouse control and sidewalk until you catch 4 or 10 times.

I actually just caught a torch I thought I would miss in midair when I jumped for it.
So If you're a tad short and it looks close to the ground jumping might save you.

Flames now only hurt for 1% per second (ticking for 60 on my 6051 health rogue). The quest is still annoying as hell but at least now you won't need to waste food doing it.

1) Less populated cities are better, as there are fewer torches flying around.
2) Zoom your camera all the way out and move it to roughly top-down, in order to track the shadow better.
3) Follow the shadow, not the torch, and lead it a little bit -- stand a bit in front of where you think it's going to fall.
4) Speed buffs can help. ;)

Every time I try doing this quest, the shadow keeps disappearing in total after 5 tosses; hence, I don't know where the torch will go or drop. I am following the suggestions above about camera position, so my question is -- why does the spot keep disappearing like that, and how do I get the game to stop doing that?

In my experience, this is MUCH easier if you use a first-person view. Tell your pet/minion to stay so that it's out of your way, then zoom to a first person view and look directly upward. This way, you can track the torch during the whole flight and it's a lot easier to line yourself up under it.

I just had a quite odd experience with this quest. After I attempted it four times in IF (around 3:40 am, ping 63ms) and missed the torch around the third catch I decided to leave it be and instead turned in the four flames from the Horde capitals which I stole before. When I completed all four quests - now here comes the odd part - this quest became also complete so I could turn it in without actually catching ten torches.

I'm still kinda confused about it...

Don't try in Darnassus. the shadow disappears in certain areas, making this impossible.
If your latency isn't too high, I recommend Ironforge.

/agree with the tips from the posters above. Also:

I also found it easiest to catch torches in Ironforge (if you're alliance...) because its darker... and the floor has a plain texture - making for better torch visibility. Though best if you can do it at a time of day where there aren't many people around or it will lower your FPS (bad!), and make it harder to see which torch is yours...

Speed enchants like this OR a meta gem like this help (a little) too. Or popping a Swiftness Potion if you're getting desperate!

This seems to be based entirely on luck. My latency is fine, but apparently the quest doesn't like me. Every time I try doing this quest the torch seems to explode on random intervals, regardless of whether I'm dead-center of the shadow or not.
My first try I used cat form for a speed boost. Dead center of the shadow at all times, yet it blew up on my third throw.
Cut to three tries later and it was still blowing up at random intervals!

For alliance, this is nearly impossible in SW with so many other people doing it at the same time. I tried it in Darnassus with fewer people, but the torches seems to disappear over half the ground there making it basically impossible there too.

Exodar did the trick. Basically nobody else there and the ground was perfect for tracking the torch shadow. Got it on my first try.

In the redesigned Org this quest seems nearly impossible to complete, not due to lag, but because the game seems to not know where the Ground is in the area you do the quest, so the torch sometimes falls underground and sometimes explodes at shoulder-height

Seems bugged. I have no latency issues and sometimes I'll be dead on where it's falling and catch it, sometimes dead on and I blow up. Had someone watch me in game and someone watch my monitor, both said seemed "the same" yet one was a catch and one was a fail. Two hours into this, one of the more difficult quests ever tried (and possibly first time I've given up on one), not going to do it. Seems like two years ago when I did it it was much easier.

- Ironforge = best defined shadow on the ground to follow
- Stay slightly in front of the shadow
- Jump when it's nearing the ground, it slightly widens the catching range.

For Alliance, it seems that Exodar is probably the best. Stormwind is terrible due to the amount of people there (makes it confusing with the amount of torches being thrown and not knowing which one is yours). Darnassus is okay but the torch seems to disappear when it gets to the road/walkway area. Ironforge isn't that bad, probably a close second.

I find that the best way to complete it is to go a little bit in front of the shadow and where you feel it's gonna land and just stand there (no jumping, nothing). Sometimes your character will instantly throw the torch while at other times your character will take a second or two before throwing it. It seems that every time I try to run with the shadow, the torch explodes.

I noticed if you run to it and make sure you stop near it if you keep running even if your on top of the shadow when it lands it will most likely blow up. After I started to stop under it the quest was easy.

If you follow these steps then you just can't fail this quest.

1. The shadow indicates the location of the torch so be sure you have zoomed out your camera (you can use /script SetCVar("cameraDistanceMax",50) to zoom out even more than usual).
2. Use keyboard for moving and mouse for turning your camera.
3. Do this quest in Stormwind or Ironforge (I haven't tried it in Exodar but in Darnassus the shadow will sometimes disappear).
4. Never be more than one step behind the shadow (you might even need to be one or more steps in front of it if you have a high latency).
5. Just before the torch hits the ground, start hitting the keys you use for moving left and right as fast as you can while still following the shadow (this will save you in those times when the torch still falls on the ground even though you were in the right spot to catch it).

It is wise to NOT attempt this in Darnassus because the ground is sloped and this can make certain low tosses impossible to catch.

I'm in Ironforge where its suppose to be easy. But every time I'm on the third or fourth torch it blows up! Even if I'm under the shadow! Why? I hate this world event so much!

1) Exodar is the best spot to do this
2) Ironforge is a close second
3) STOP under the shadow of the torch when it's about to land

Latency is the not the problem! The problem is, I CAN'T SEE THE SHADOW! And if other people are there, you're ^&*!ed because they stand right over your shadow and you can't tell what torch is what. And sometimes the torch lands several feet in front of the shadow and explodes in your face!

I'm having trouble with my latency where I have to get ahead of the shadow in order for the catch to count, but also while I'm waiting for the torch to hit me, the server sends my client notice I've already caught it and the torch takes off flying while previous one is still spinning towards me. This premature throw is almost always a low flying one, and the game takes the liberty of letting it explode before my client tells it I've gotten into position. I did this last year, and while it was maddeningly hard, I don't remember having this problem. If you normally keyboard turn, I highly recommend mouse turning for this one--just give yourself additional time to adjust to the new control. Bonus: party with a patient hunter friend and have them give you Aspect of the Pack.

Tips:
1. Go somewhere deserted - Stormwind is impossible. Ironforge worked for me.
2. Make a torch throwing hot key.
3. Follow the shadow of the torch, as others have mentioned. A view behind and above works best.
4. Get just a little bit ahead of the shadow.
5. The shadow shrinks as the torch is higher in the air and gets bigger as it drops - you can learn about what size it is before it hits.
6. Follow the shadow slightly to the side (so you can see it well) and as it drops, come in a curve/ turn around the front of the shadow. This catches it AND gives you a head start on running to the next one.

Good luck. Took me a while to get it figured out, but once I did it worked pretty slick.

This crap quest would be a lot easier if you could only see YOUR torch's shadow on the ground. Every time I try this, some deliberate or accidental loser(s) starts throwing his own torch causing multiple shadows to run in every direction leading me to lose track of mine and fail =\.

If you are a mage, use the Glyph of Rapid Teleportation. Portal into SW and fly fast to the Fire. That one minute of 70% speed bonus is more than enough time.
I did not have problems seeing the shadow in SW, but I have a good computer and shadows are turned up high.

Somebody find it hard to complete this quest. It is turning out that people on a crowded server and high latency will be more difficult to full fill the quest. Below is my advise:

1. Before doing the quest, temporary turn off all of your add-on for decrease the lag.
2. After tossing out the torch, follow the shadow of the torch moving on the ground to catch.
3. Do it when you are alone, if you do when somebody is doing the same, it is hard to track off the shadow of the torch.
4. Sometime, you move to catch the torch at correct place but the torch still burn on the ground. That is: you move not fast enough. For resolve this, you may need an enchant to boots for enhance minor speed (any +8% running speed may help).

mostly good advice here. I also might add do not run backwards. As obvious as that may sound I always use my right mouse to look and I only ever move forward or strafe so I am always moving full speed. I never try to back peddle even as a start.

And yes the shadow definitely shows up much clearer on some grounds. Why that was down voted back there, no idea.

Anyone can do it any class any race without enhancements. If I can do it on a 9 year old pc with a very poor tier 1 cable connection. Anyone can. If you have latency try going to a less populated area like Exodar and dont do it wireless.

Well I usually struggle with this silly quest but some comments below seemed to help.

BE IN FRONT of the shadow never behind. I think it hits you on the back of the head if you are even a step behind the shadow. I seemed to miss A LOT when slightly behind. Reading comments here, I tried to make sure I was a step AHEAD of the shadow and it started going fairly smoothly.

Tip for druids: you can both toss and catch the torch in your travel form. It is much easier than trying to do it in humanoid form, because you are moving faster.

After some time spended on this quest, I figured out that every time you catch the torch, it goes more or less in opposite direction. My suggestion would be to try to turn 180 degrees JUST BEFORE torch lands down which would give you good advantange for next catch.

Thanks who ever suggest Exodar is best place to do this it finally worked to me! Darnassus was worst ever since shadow bug on ground SW too many people same time and still shadow look strange when tossing but Exodar was lot better after about 7 try it success! also raising shadow graphics may help. Thanks for a tip whoever it was :) also i can confirm this quest wont work for a keyboard turner you need use mouse for turning your character really and i also notice shadow effect is inch of second of synch so be ahead minium millisecond :P damn cheap and poor developers hehe.

I already reported it in-game, but just in case some people experience this too: I'd like to report that as of July 2018 this quest is bugged, at least for me, in that the torches show NO SHADOW no matter how high or low I set the shadow quality setting. I've tried Stormwind, I tried Ironforge, I tried Darnassus, I tried Exodar — there isn't any shadow at all in any of the cities, and in all the cities I was alone except for SW. Home MS around 104, world MS was around 129.

It seems ~~you're far more likely to~~ you will catch it if you're not moving at the time it hits.

In some cases I wasn't able to keep in front of the shadow - but if I stopped moving before it hit I still caught it

I've tried this on a few alts now and haven't failed any.
No speed boosts on most of my alts either.
