Loot the Corehound!

Apparently there is a big lineup at the Kurken, since he counts as a Core Hound as well. Hounds of Culuthas are still demons, though.

Who pulled the firespawn with the Core Hound?
I think a hunter did, but it's tamed now!

Nuff said!
edit: seems like Image shack ate the picture a long time ago. Also, the original comment I had responded to is long gone.
The original image was of the Kurken, tamed, in response to someone asking if it would be a core hound. There was a lot of discussion back in the pre-WotLK days about whether or not the Kurken would count as a Core Hound and thus be tamable by hunters.

Red Core Hound from MC - tamed successfully.
Ancient Core Hound, 62+. Didn’t try the core hound packs for obvious reasons. Duo’d it with the druid in my party, restoration spec’d. Throwaway pet to get you into a resable spot near the first Core Hound, there’s a safe spot along the edges away from the other core hound that pats to the bridge and the maniac surger. Damaged it to start to keep aggro, then tamed away.
Yes, completely tameable. Thank you, Blizzard. I will love you forever for this.

I am so glad the more wolf-like white one can be tamed.
As a wolf/dog lover I was worried about which exotic pet to choose, but now the choice is clear.
I just hope there is a white-model one for horde players to have easy access to. Are they in Northrend or is it only Kurken and Omen?

Now i'm going to be eaten alive by a giant two-headed doggie...

This is the reason why we dont have gnome hunters, the core hounds would mistake them for a chew toy after being tamed.

Any idea if Magmadar can be tamed? (2nd Boss of MC)

Is there anything more than their special ability that makes these pets worth it? I would've thought exotic pets have better damage/health/armor bonuses, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Ok, so if you spec BM tame a core hound and then spec out to MM or S do you still get to keep the pet?

Taming an Ancient Core Hound 101.
Raid Make up:
51 pt BM Hunter (you)
Healer (preferably druid, but any will do)
Any Pet (optional if you have a druid)
Under no circumstances should your healer heal till step 4
Step 1:
Enter Molten Core near BRD by talking to Lothos if you are attuned or Green Raid portal inside BRD. This may seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many people do not know where Molten Core is anymore. Talk to Lothos to get the atunement quest before entering BRD, its always nice to have an easy atunement.
Step 2 With druid healer:
Dismiss your pet (not abandon). When you enter Molten core you will see 2 giants. On the right giants side, is a lava river and a ledge. Run past the giant and try to jump on the ledge. If you do not make it, do not fret. Get to land and Feign Death. Have the druid stealth and follow you.
If at all possible, try to be on the ledge
its not impossible to tame a core hound, just makes it easier. If the druid pulls agro, use
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=58984
, it now works in combat. Ancient Corehounds see through stealth
Step 2 without a druid healer:
have your healer stand away from you as far as they can. Send your pet to the farthest mob it will go to. Your pet is going to die. While your pet clears the giants and agros a mob, have your healer hug the right wall and drop off the right side where the giant was. Again
try to land on the ledge if you can
This makes things much easier. You should fd at this point since the mobs your pet just agroed are now coming after you. Get some health and go to where the priest is and fd since again, a bunch of mobs will be trying to kill you.
Step 3:
follow the wall (whether you made it to the ledge or not) till you can not go any further. If you made it to the ledge, you can follow it till it ends and drop off with out agroing any mobs. if you didnt, you will need to send your pet far away, run around that corner and feign death. make sure your healer makes it around there before you do. Otherwise he/she may get agro and die. That area gives you the option to tame 2 Ancient Corehounds with out the risk of agroing any other mobs. Both of them pat, but only one actually pats in the path you will be in.
Step 4:
Build agro by shooting and attacking the core hound of your choice. You will actually have to be under his mouth to do any damage to him in melee range, but he still has the ability to attack you. Your healer should do light healing at this point, just keeping you alive, as long as you are not taming, the corehound wont hit you for too much. After you feel you have enough threat built, start the taming process. At this point, the corehound will hit you for about 2k each hit for about 6-7 hits. Your healer should be able to keep you alive. Without a healer and having only 9.5k hp, i could get to about 3-4 secs left before i died.
Step 5:
do /woot and /cheer because you now have your Red Core Hound that very few people on your server will have.
Just some things to note.
1. Red Corehounds have a burning ember sound when you tame them.
2. They also shake the screen when they walk. I think you can turn this off under your options for those that do not like the screen shake.
3. You do not have to feed your pet. Although he is unhappy, just spec
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=53187
, it will probably take a couple mobs, but the pet will be happy afterwards.
4. You can not name this pet Princess, blizzard has the name reserved (i ended up naming mine Spike)

Taming the core hound in MC is soloable. I and a friend (he came up with the idea when no one would help him) did it on Illidan server Alliance side.
What you need:
Fire resist pot
Haste pot
Abacus of Violent Odds
Enough Resil to be crit immune
at least 10k hp
any other haste is helpful (but not needed)
As others have stated as you enter MC you can mis direct mobs to a throwaway pet and jump on the ledge to your right and feign there while your pet dies. Drink the resist pot. You now have one minute until you can use the haste pot with trinket. There are two core hounds you can tame...one pats by the ledge you are on and one that is up the path a bit. Either is fine but timing is critical.
Because the timing is so tricky it is best to bring several of each potion.... after the first few tries you well get the timing down and say hello to a new red core hound!

the first time i took my hunter to tame the white core hound on azuemyst isle, there was about 6 other horde and 2 alliance waiting patiently for their turn to tame. So all up I was waiting about an hour, that includes the number of ganks involved. :'(...But it was worth it, its so cute and fluffy. :)

I think.. with the Core Hound you now really can "Kill it with fire!" Much like the Dragonhawk.. though it's more anti-mage/healer so it seems to me like it would be a decent pvp pet to take out the pesky magic users that tend to make life difficult for anyone that gets caught by their spell.

Now with all pets at the same Damage, HP, and Armour, its just a question of which one you like best and the abillity it has. With Lava Breath, the Corehound is a Killer for all spellcasters in PvP.

Bite is melee range
and Lava Breath is 30 yard range.
with all abilities on auto - bite, lava breath, dash, charge etc
If I start my fight, will it fire lava breath first then go to melee, or will it dash and bite and breath?
just curious...

I just solo tamed him on a lvl70 hunter. I stacked as much stamina gear as I could find in the auction house. I didn't pay any attention to any other stat but stamina. I wound up with about 13k unbuffed when I was done.
Use the videos of people soloing the tame as a guide, they are very good and will get you through this. I waited until I was past the aggro point of the first two mobs outside the lava, but before the core hound's ledge, to take a moment and buff up. I used Scroll of Stamina VII, Flask of Fortification and Baked Manta Ray (+40 Haste and Stamina) while in Aspect of the Monkey. It's a good idea to target the core hound that moves onto the ledge as soon as possible so that you don't have to move around to do it. Once I was buffed, I waited for him to start coming down from the ledge. He will hit a point where he's within tame range, but still around that bend. As soon as you see him hit tame range, pop a Potion of Speed (500 Haste for 15 seconds), this brought my tame-pet down to 14.9 seconds. I pulled him with tame pet alone. He didn't break tame, and I was left with just over 1k hp when I was done.
Make sure you've brought meat for him!
EDIT: I should mention that taming him is not easy. I spent one afternoon getting attuned to MC (I didn't even have the Shadowforge Key). Then it took about 2 hours of trial and error before finally succeeding. The hardest part, I found, is getting your timing just right. Sometimes I couldn't make it past the mobs on the side of the lava. Another time I waited too long and aggro'd the Core Hound as he was coming down the ledge. I accidentally pulled another Core Hound that was behind me coming out of the tunnel. My advice is to be well stocked on buff items (because you might die more times than you expect to) and to not use them until you're sure you're in the right spot to tame. That way you haven't wasted them when a mob gets you. To take as little damage as possible from the giants at the start and the lava you have to swim through, a fire resistance pot and Deterrence are your best friends. However, through my own trials, I found that it was more successful to use Potion of Speed while you're taming rather than a fire resistance pot. Your mileage may vary.

Hey, just to let you know, I am currently a BM hunter at level 69 now, and I dont know about you guys, but my cunning pets do way more dps than ferocity pets now due to the Wolverine Bite cunning pets can now get. In randoms with some buffs, (like kings on me and might on my pet) on a boss i can pull around 1400 dps, and normally around 52-59% of my dps is my pet. I tested out a couple of cunning pets, and the ones that seem to the most damage is the Nether Ray, and its strange because its CD on its ability is 28 seconds. Strangely enough my Sporebat is one of my highest DPS pets, then followed by the Chimaera and then my raptor (which is my backup pet if the boss does alot of damage to pets.)
So I guess since the change on Wolverine Bite, I see cunning pets the #1 on dps again, but ferocity not much behind.

Sadly he does not turn raid bosses into dragonkin to kill things.
Or freeze people.
Yeah, no curses at all.
Just Chromaggus.
The guy that wiped you.

The drakeadon skin is no longer unique to Chromaggus. A level 49 rare,
Chromehound
, spawns in Blackrock Mountain near the BRS summoning stone and walks in a circular path along the main chamber. I camped Chromehound for about 2 hours but its respawn may be longer than that, I don't know how long he was gone before I showed up.

This is all very good about taming them. How the heck do you kill them so they stay dead when there's more than one after you?
The presence of more than one resurects the dead one. This appears to happen even if they are both dead. It also happens when you drag the mob of them away from the dead one :(
The only way i can see is to skin them. This is difficult when you're solo & busy fighting them :( ... or if you're not a skinner.

If you tame one of the corehounds from the packs in front of
Magmadar
it WILL reignite the packs of dead corehounds even after taming. Dismissing and resummoning does nothing. Exiting the raid and zoning back in needs research.
