This is ability is very weak. The in-game tooltip shows a 10% chance to hurt yourself. The DoT damage is lowest of any ability I've come across, except for Nut Barrage. Even when this procs it's still useless. Assuming no proc, my level 21 Sporebat does 175 damage over 5 rounds. His alternative ability does 357 damage over 3 rounds with a 2 round startup and a vulnerability to Tidal Wave-like abilities. That's 595 per 5 rounds if you keep it going.
It would have been interesting if "damage to self" would mean that the used ability would damage the user. The way it is, however, it is a tiny chance to do an insignificant amount of damage.
The dot is no where near as annoying as
Seems to proc more often than 10% of the time, at least for tamers. Burning Pandaren Spirit's and Hyuna's fireflies will trigger about half the time. Not much damage usually but it can get dangerous if you use a multi-hitting attack or have an extra damage debuff on you. I've knocking myself a couple of times by using a 3-strike move with a dot up on Fire Spirit's Glowy, suffering over 400 damage in retaliation.
DoT damage is: for each tick.
Bonus damage is: when it triggers.
Minimum damage would be , which is far inferior to most abilities, more so when comparing to other DoTs (which typically deal more damage over their duration). For comparison,
(100% hit direct damage) deals ,
(pure DoT) deals damage, and
(direct damage+DoT) is .
So the "confusion" effect -which is the bulk of this ability's damage- would need to trigger 4 to 5 times over the duration to do competitive damage. Something that, even with multi-hit abilities, is a truly rare ocurrence. And, should it never trigger, this ability deals even less damage than the most basic skills. Overall, very, very weak - the fact that it competes with
on most pets only makes things worse.
On a side note, this is the only DoT that benefits from Speed on some extent - since applying it before the enemy acts will let the sting trigger on their actions this turn.
