Surprised no one mentioned how useful this ability is. There are two major benefits, of course assuming your pet is slower than your opponent's.
1) If your opponent uses attacks that rely on striking first, they're going to be gimped.
2) If you think your opponent is about to use abilities like Dive, Burrow, Lift-Off, etc (some tamers are very predictable about it), then use this to get damage in during that round. You attack before they become unhittable. On the next round, you use some other ability, so they go first because normal speed rules apply. You attack after they become hittable. Result - their ability didn't negate any of your attacks.
Note that this doesn't actually always make you go first, it just gives you a large boost to Speed for one turn. When my level 4 spirit crab used it, the tooltip showed it with 291 Speed instead of 31, which was still slower than the opponent's level 25 pet.
Damage formula for this ability is:
15 + ATK x 0.75
Unlike other speed modifying abilities -which multiply speed by a percentage- the speed boost is an additive, fixed value, which is level and quality dependant:
This means that a lower quality/level faster pet may get to act after a slower one if both were to use
or any other ability that "goes first" .
As reference, for a level 25 Rare pet, that value is set at
