Possibly a bug, but this seems to damage opponents who are burrowed, flying, or inside a cocoon, though it won't apply the DoT.

I've noticed this too. It makes spiders very hard to counter. This is an underrated (and possibly bugged) move.
The DOT that this applies is
, which oddly enough is an Elemental ability and thus does extra damage against Mechanicals.

Now deals more instant damage, putting it closer to other Poisoning abilities in overall damage.

If we check total damage (assuming the ability runs its course), it pales in comparison to the Fang; but if used as a primary, spammable damage ability, the scales tip in favor of the Spit.
In fact, since 6.0, you'll be looking at
19 (+0.95) damage
, which is almost the same as
and along the lines of
(both of them, common abilities in Spiders and similar); making it quite reasonable as a primary damage ability (disregarding the type mix-up, that is!), although not as specialized as the full Beast and full Elemental alternative.
