If you've ever dealt with

like Aaro said, multi-hit abilities are effective against this passive because the 40% limitation applies to each hit, not the damage of the entire turn. a dragonkin's Tail Sweep can be devastating if it gets both hits.
I found out something awesome about magical pets. If you put one level 1 in a fight with a Pandarian trainer, use it for a round and then change it for your main pets and win it will get enough xp to jump straight to level 10 and you don't risk that the pet gets killed because of the passive magical pets have (if you have the
you can get one extra level). I find this quite handy for getting my 75 level 10 achievement because I just have to buy some low cost
and then sell them back, even for less than the initial price it still cuts down hours of battle and running around Azeroth to level your pets. Also note that if you level a pet up to 10, or 25 for that matter, you
need to keep them for them to count toward the achievements.
I believe it is needless to say that in such an encounter you don't intend to make your magical pet kill the last opponent like if you were trying to level a ~18-24 pet with this level it will get enough xp to get to level 10 with a "shared" victory.
It is important to note that it can only be done with Pandarian trainers because of the enhanced amount of experience they get when defeated. But by experience I know that at least 3-4 of them are fairly easy to kill with only one to two level 25. It only is up to you to find out if you have the right team or right pets. For example I manage to kill
every time I go up against her with my
NB: If you are up against trainers that uses damage to multiple targets you might want to have at least one of your two 25s to have a group heal such as

Just thought I'd put it out here. Don't see this mentioned in any guide so far. Maybe it's so obvious noone wants to mention it.
This passive ability means hp is less valuable than on other pets. Hp should be scrapped in favor of speed and power. This ability puts a cap on the potential max damage received. Lower max hp means lower cap. Which is better for you especially if you're using a healing ability. More power/speed than normal means stronger/faster heals.
There is a tiny risk that you end up with an opponent that do exactly 34-35% of your hp every attack - enough to 3-shot you - and he would have been doing 32-33% - not enough to 3-shot you - if you didn't scrap hp. But it's a bargain for the incredible ability to not be 1-or-2-shotable by anything but multiattack-abilities and burns.
And when your facing an opponent magic pet: Quickly calculate it's max hp multiplied with 0.34 and see if any of your attacks may be able to threaten with a 3-shot. If not you should look for multi-hit abilies and burns/poisons. If none is available you may be better off with something that can outlast it by reducing damage or healing yourself. Or just go for a 4-shot.
Also this is great for capturing wild magic pets. Can be tanked and attacked by your own higher-level pet and in 2 hard hits it'll be ready to be captured. Don't have to fear an unlucky crit if it's above 36% hp. Problem is to remember it.
