J.J. Abrams (co-creator of Bad Robot Productions) is known for the reboot of the Star Trek film franchise, and he is also recently involved in a Westworld reboot. Just as a side-note, the recent Star Trek films (since 2009) can be viewed as an alternate timeline, splitting into an unknown future. The following exchange perfectly summarises what the writers did:
Spock: We must gather with the rest of Starfleet... to balance the terms of the next engagement.
James T. Kirk: There won't
a next engagement! By the time we've "gathered," it will be too late! But you say he's from the future and knows what is going to happen-then the logical thing is to be unpredictable.
Spock: You are assuming that Nero knows how events are predicted to unfold. The contrary-Nero's very presence has altered the flow of history, beginning with the attack on the U.S.S. Kelvin, culminating in the events of today, thereby creating an entire new chain of incidents that cannot be anticipated by either party.
Lt. Nyota Uhura: An alternate reality.
Spock: Precisely. Whatever our lives might have been, if the time continuum was disrupted, our destinies have changed.
This can also be applied to the upcoming Warlords of Draenor expansion: Garrosh (with some help) travels back to Draenor, and he interferes with the clans from drinking Mannoroth's blood. The original timeline is still there (our current timeline where he was imprisoned), but Draenor with no fel clans is now the alternate universe.
