Hutia is located at 48.13, 27.80, Northern The Jade Forest in the middle of a number of blue torches, he has just short 4000k health and can be slowed, snared and stunned. He has a very fast respawn of only around 10 minutes and has 1 main ability being that he can heal himself for around 1000k, you have to interrupt this.
Aside from that he is not tamable until you take him to 800k health and will pretty much 2 shot you if you get within 10 yards as has a pretty impressive melee range and hits for 150 - 200k without a crit. Good luck.

Hutia is probably the easiest one's to tame out of the 3 Porcupines - as the area that you have to kite her is very small.
It will do just to kite her in a circle around the log that she resides beside. She has a heal that she casts around every 30 seconds (Silencing Shot was able to finish its cooldown every single time before she casted her heal again) you have to interrupt this heal or else it will let her regain all of her health.
It is also important to note that while this seems easy enough, its a must to slow her down, as she still hits just as hard as Gumi does, so she'll 2-3 shot you if you're not careful.
She is able to be hit by scatter shot so if for some reason your silencing shot isn't off of its cooldown than you can use that as a quick substitute.
Happy Hunting everyone!

This was an overall easy yet fun tame.
Like others have said scatter shot works and silencing shot is a must, it also doesn't hurt to have the glyph for tame beast as well as you don't want to get hit by this guy mid tame . Watch your Glaive toss while kiting as you don't want to pull other mobs while running around the log .
Good luck guys !
He also seems to have a short spawn timer as well, some say ten minutes . I checked back in an hour and he was up again.

To my knowledge, Degu, Gumi and Hutia are the first 3 spirit beast that aren't actually classified as rare, and have quick re spawn timers. It does feel like kind of a let down since one of the great qualities of the spirit beasts is how unique they are, but I guess the fight mechanics make up for how easy they are to find.

I just ran into a couple of issues with this one, but they are easy to solve:
If you interrupt the healing ability with Scatter Shot,
he will cast it again
immediately after the stun. The solution would be using Silencing Shot now, but when the second one is interrupted this way, he will cast it a
third
time.
Solution
: don't use Scatter Shot to interrupt him; use Silencing Shot instead every time, and you should be fine.
I was going to tame him without
, but when I finally got to tame him, he reached me, but instead of a normal hit, I recieved a 300k crit, and then a normal hit which killed me.
Solution
: use the glyph and be as far as you can from him when you cast Tame Beast. He should hit you once or twice, just pray that he doesn't 1-shot you...

It has been said that you need the ability to kite, and you do not. I can't kite to save my life. I can backpedal or run forward, and you can solo this spirit beast doing just that. What I used for talents:
迅疾如风
,
,
意气风发
,
凶暴野兽
,
, and
. What I used for glyphs:
被烧毁的雕文
,
被烧毁的雕文
, and
被烧毁的雕文
. Main thing here is to keep Aspect of the Cheetah and Concussive shot up at all times. Use Ice trap as it becomes available, Silencing shot when Hutia begins to heal, and Disengage when needed. Using this I just attacked Hutia with all I had and after every Concussive shot turned around and ran forward. Before Concussive shot dropped I did a 180, shot Hutia again, then another 180 and kept running. Taking just a couple Arcane shots and Glaive tosses when I could safely do so. Dire Beast and A Murder of Crows helped out a lot since I didn't have a pet out of course. Using this method, I solo tamed this beast without kiting, and you can too. As far as which path to take, run around the log. Good luck everyone!

Got him to 30%, then started taming.
But what did the little Sandslash do? Cast the heal during the tame.
Therefore being 60% again before the tame was over.
But what? I had still tamed him!
I'd broke the laws of physics.

Deterrence during Taming should be a must on this one, since he seems to be immune to Crowd Controls other than Scattershot.

This was how I tamed Hutia: Start from one end of the log she stands in front of and put down an ice trap. Then hit her with concussive shot and start kiting her around the log. Use concussive shot as often as you can, she's really slow and can't climb over the log, so all you have to do is just run around it. You can also shoot through the log. When she starts to cast spirit heal, use silencing shot to interrupt it and keep kiting. As I have found, you should unlearn something if you don't have silencing shot - scatter shot interrupts it but then she just casts it again and scatter shot is on cooldown at the time, so you'll want to use silencing shot to completely stop her. When she's finally at her lowest health and the buff is gone, if you really don't want to get hit, stand on the opposite side of the log she is on and tame her through the log. It's the easiest way, since she takes a while to get to you, especially if dazed. (: Hope this helped <3

When Hutia hits 800k health hit Deterrence and then Tame Beast. If you have the glyph that speeds up your tame you will most definitely finish the tame before your Deterrence wears off. :)

As of patch 5.2, there are three new spirit beasts that look like porcupines which hunters may tame. All three have extremely short spawn timers (for example, I have seen Hutia tamed and up again ten minutes later). This means that they are usually present - their challenge isn't in the find but in the tame. The hunter must keep out of close range, interrupt any applicable spellcasting, and wear their health down until the buff that prevents taming, Strong Will, disappears.

Hutia is located at 48.13, 27.80. He has an ability called spirit heal, this ability heals him for around 1000k you will need to interrupt this ability so I recommend having silencing shot or scatter shot. Try not to get within melee range of Hutia because he is able to two-shot you. Always keep concussive shot up and kite Hutia using an ice trap. Once Hutia is at around 800k health concussive shot, ice trap, deterrence, and tame! Hutia has a very short re-spawn timer, around 10 minutes. Good luck!

It was South East of the Tian Monestary in the Jade Forest, on the map its close to a cave. There will be a area with glowing blue torches and a skeleton in front of it.
I just caught him and he re-spawned again. So go at it! :3
Will be posting a screen shot.
Hope this helps~

This was extremely easy. I was expecting something much harder after having fought all the rare spawns in Pandaria. This one is quite simple: All you need to do is kite him and tame him at 800k. Use silencing shot whenever he casts Spirit Heal. That's it. Just make sure there's good distance between yourself and him when you start to tame him.
If you want a good challenge, fight
迅云艾然
. Much more difficult than this thing.

Was kiting and trying to tame this guy solo (I had almost got him to tamable health when one of those annoying adds aggro'd) and a random shaman comes along and offers help. Apparently kindness is still around in WoW. We ended up bursting him down (shaman dying to drop aggro at the last minute) and I tamed him in about 30 seconds. We both blew our cooldowns and it was fairly easy with all the shammy cooldowns/elementals and all of my hunter cooldowns. We only had to silence three times, I did it once and the shammy did it the other two times. Thank you, Mr. Random Shammy for the help! /hug

I just caught this and here are a few things I found helpful:
First, a lot of people are saying to use intimidation, silencing shot and scatter shot to interrupt the heal. Unless you have a second hunter helping you, you cannot stay in BM and use silencing shot. You also don't want to use intimidate because it requires that you have a pet out and you can't tame if you have pet out, which means taking valuable time to dismiss it. Not to mention if you try to fight with a pet, Hutia will pound your pet before it's even out of the gate. I put Patrannache in passive and used its lullaby as well as intimidate to help with the interrupt during one attempt. The lullaby worked great, intimidate almost killed me, but then I had to dismiss my pet before I could tame. Even if you slow Hutia down, by the time it takes to dismiss your current pet, Hutia will be on top of you and you might as well just kiss your butt goodbye at that point. So the only interrupt you can count on is scatter shot. during one cool down of scatter shot, Hutia can heal big time twice so you really only have one shot to heal with. You have two approaches, massive dps with a near perfect rotation and a slow drain on Hutia, but that doesn't always work. I watched him heal himself to full a couple of times from 800 K. So DPS can work, but expect a long fight.
The other way is to bring a friend.
Here's how I caught him. After dying a bunch of times, I circled the log nailing him with concussion, serpent sting and arcane (using aspect of the cheetah), then my wife followed on Hutia's tail with her pally and did nothing but interrupt with Rebuke and Fist of Justice make sure your pally turns off aggro builders if you do this). When she was on cool down, my scatter shot was up (be careful, that concussion is up on him when you go in close to use scatter). Make sure if you have an ally that they don't create dps or aggro or Hutia will turn on them and you'll be on your own. When Hutia hit 800K, I hit him with a concussion to slow him down hugged the log and ran to the direct opposite side of the log. He was halfway in the middle of the log on his side, I was halfway in the middle on my side. I started taming right off the bat and it gave me barely enough time to tame just as he got back into melee distance. What I found is that he'll actually stumble through the obstacles in the log, slowing him down. Trying to b-line it and tame him with a straight path didn't work, either I had to interrupt training with concussion and gain ground again or he caught up to me and took me out a split moment before I was done taming. The log acts as a good measuring stick and obstacle to Hutia. Halfway down on each side of the log provided enough space and he can't hit through the log. If you have to circle the log once more to set yourself up, I advise taking the time.. Once Hutia closes the final few seconds of taming either you'll tame him by a hair or he'll pound you, so once he's on your side of the log during taming, either cut and run and set yourself up again or take the gamble and see if he hits you before the green taming bar runs out.
Plan on dying! But be patient, you'll get the feel for it.

Had tried this on my hunter w/o luck. Came upon another hunter working on this while on my 86 druid. Took a few minutes, and spammed Entangling Roots to help him out. (Was much easier than trying to heal him and his pet.) He got the pet, and I got someone to help me when I go back to tame it. Works.

After trying to tame Degu, this one was a piece of cake. I had the help of my boyfriend, who is a Ret Pally and he gave me buffs. We took a different approach to this by *not* nuking him or blowing cool downs on him from the start. More of a slow and steady wins the race with Hutia.
Do not start with a pet. Before you start, take your pet out, then dismiss it. I made the mistake of just assuming that since my pet wasn't out, that it was dismissed. Furthermore, If you start with a pet, you will not have enough time to dismiss it and start to tame. The spirit porcupines hit very hard.
I kited him around the log while my bf interrupted the spirit heals. At times, I had to switch from Aspect of Iron Hawk to Aspect of Cheetah because I would lose sight of Hutia on the other side of the log and/or Hutia would speed up. We just slowly wore him down. I kept up on concussive shot to daze Hutia. When Spirit Will wore off and I was able to start taming him, I popped deterrence and started to tame. My bf healed me because I did get hit once, then I captured him.
On a side note, I think that is the key to taming Degu as well. You need to get healed (by yourself or another player) as you tame Degu because all these Spirit Porcupines hit hard. I cannot stress that enough.

This one was an easy solo. I just kited her around in a circle around her initial spawn point, paying more attention to getting my Silencing Shot and Concussive Shot off at all times rather than damaging her as much as I could. Keep Aspect of the Cheetah on and maintain Serpent Sting. Use your Dire Beast, Murder of Crows and Stampede as much as you can to make sure she is taking damage but ensure you prioritize the Concussive Shots and the silence on her healing cast over everything else.
I had the Glyph of Tame Beast to speed up the cast and I popped Deterrence right before taming. She got a hit on me before the cast finished as deterrence faded, so make sure you've kept your health topped up; Exhilaration or a potion should do.
This may be slower than some other tactics, but it was pretty foolproof. Good luck, she's a pretty pet!

Tip: I tamed one of the local porcupines as a discard pet and turned off growl*. Then I placed ice and snake traps between me and Hutia and engaged. Since I had an active pet I was able to cast Stampede. This along with crows, dire beast, bestial wrath, and rapid fire meant Hutia was burned down to ~50% before stampede pets wore off and she started running for me. Some lite kiting followed; helped by the ice and snake traps. A quick right click on the regular porcupine to abandon pet and I was ready to deterrence and tame beast.
Easy peasy. Lemon squeezy.
*The pet needs to be alive to be abandoned so make sure it doesn't pull aggro and die.

Not an easy tame. Took several tries for me to solo. What helped for me was keeping concussive shot on cooldown to stay ahead of her, dropping freezing traps whenever I remembered to do so, Aspect of the Cheetah and keeping disengage handy if she got too close. Scatter Shot will interrupt her but she'll cast her heal again immediately afterwards, but that'll give you a couple seconds to be ready with a Silencing shot.
It works out well that Silencing Shot cooldown is 30 seconds, the same as the cooldown of her healing cast. So when Silencing shot is almost off cooldown, be ready to interrupt her next heal.
I basically circled around walking backwards and firing off whatever I had available. Widow Venom may help if you accidentally let her get off her heal. Watch your path so you don't end up backing into a rock or tree and stop moving, otherwise she'll get on top of you.

Unlike what others have said, it's not
that
easy.
I'm not very good at kitting, yet, I'm good enough for her, kite-wise.
Problem is: even using
only
Silencing Shot, she
can
put up a 2nd heal only seconds after being interrupted, so there goes the theory of not using Scatter Shot...
And even using Scatter Shot, she'd also sometimes put up 3 and 4 heals in a very short time-frame...
I'd guess that, once again, Blizzard fails in these hunter challenges when they are made in a way that you not only need to play good, you need RNG gods to favor you
and
group up with more people. I mean, these are supposed to be
hunter
challenges,
not
group challenges!
And why can't they simply not drop a single thing so other dumb players leave these alone for hunters?
I mean, I can live with "get the strat right, die a few times if needed and FD fails", but "get the strat right
and
have RNG Gods favor you"?
For the record: I did tame all the Hyjal/Firelands rares solo, so I'm not that bad huntard... :)

Solo'd on my first attempt as a fresh level 90 hunter, so I didn't have the gear to back up my DPS. If you're good at kiting, then you should have no issues taming her.
Using what I read in comments (courtesy of RhyaofStormrage), I temporarily tamed one of the Porcupines around her for
狂野怒火
,
群兽奔腾
,
杀戮命令
, and
for a bit of additional DPS. While this Hutia isn't necessarily a DPS race, this is definitely a great method to squeeze out as much damage as you can.
The important thing to remember when doing this is that
低吼
needs to be turned
OFF
so Hutia does not turn around and smack your pet across the face. This pet needs to be alive in order to be abandoned.
Remember to right click -> abandon this porcupine right before the tame
.
震荡射击
on cooldown, keep your distance, and save

for her
灵魂治疗
and you're golden. I didn't have any issues with her casting
灵魂治疗
twice in a row as others have mentioned, so by the time she casts it,
should be off of cooldown. If not,
makes for a great back-up.

Just tamed this guy on Dalaran a few minutes ago. All and all not a hard fight, but it was more dumb luck than any skill on my part. It took 4 attempts, the first I died because I tried the "tame a nearby porcupine" strategy and couldn't manage to abandon the pet fast enough to tame before it walked up and gnawed me to death. The other two times I mistimed my Silencing shots and decided to start again.
Beating it's HP down is pretty straight forward: Kite it in a circle, keep Concussion Shot up at all times (Don't wait for the debuff to wear off the mob, cast it as soon as it comes off cooldown) and try and keep away from the mob as it hits like a truck.
The dumb luck came in on the taming. Once he was capturable, I ran out in front as far as I could, used Deterrence, then cast Tamed Beast. I did not have the Glyph of Tamed Beast on, so Deterrence dropped a few seconds before Tame Beast was finished.
As such, it got in 2 good hits and dropped my HP to the point to where one more smack would have sent me back to the Spirit Healer. Thankfully, he decided to cast Spirit Heal instead, and I tamed him mid-cast.
So, it is possible to tame this mob without a sacrificial pet, just make sure you have a good amount of health. And the Glyph of Tame Beast would probably help too. >_<

I've been playing since 2005, back when taming Humar the Pridelord was a big deal since he was the only black cat in WoW and was spawn camped by everyone all day and you had to PvP with people (if you were on a PvP server) to even have a chance to tame him, where even if you got lucky someone would come along and kill him just to mess with you. I tamed King Krush in Wotlk back when he could actually kill you and taming this guy was the most fun I've had since then.
Thanks, Blizz.

I just tamed this one, going mostly by crescentmoon's post and the advice in there.
I had disengage, concussive shot and silencing shot ready on my action bar.
Here are a few other things I made sure of:
- I scouted the surrounding area to make sure I wouldnt walk into aggroing mobs, like the tigers or tricksters closeby.
- I killed the (non-aggressive) porcupines close to her
- I practiced walking backwards around the log just to get into it and the terrain
- I had the glyph for fast taming equipped
I pulled with a concussive shot, then used stampede on Hutia. I think TOO much DPS can actually be a disadvantage when you try to tame her (it?). It took me like 6 attempts, and during 2 of them, she casted her heal before silencing shout was off CD.
I didnt try the "run around the log and shoot through it" method. I did at first, but I wasnt fast enough with turning around and keeping concussive shot up.
So Instead, I walked backwards in a large circle, keeping concussive shot up, interrupting her heals, and keeping as much distance as possible with Disengage.
In between, a porcupine respawned and joined the fight... I got her down with Death by Crows and a fast Kill Shot
It took quite a few attempts, but it was quite a satisfying feel to get her to below 800 k. One more disengage, then I tamed her. She actually hit me once more, but then it was over.
Good luck with this, and don't give up too early. The first 2-3 attempts went horribly wrong, but eventually, I memorized everything that went wrong during those (adds, terrain slowing me so she'd hit me...) and finally nailed it.

A few notes about this tame:
Make sure you're in Beast Mastery spec, she's a Spirit Beast and not a porcupine.
She becomes tamable once below about 30% health (800k), tame will complete even if she heals up during the tame.
She hits for roughly 100k at about a 10 yard range - kite her around her log. (
震荡射击
on cooldown really helps.)
You can shoot through the log and tame through the log, she cannot hit you through the log. Nonetheless, learn and use
被烧毁的雕文
so you're almost guaranteed a tame.
She has a heal for 30% of her health (
灵魂治疗
). You must interrupt it.
does not count as an interrupt, she will cast it immediately after the CC ends. So take
.
Her heal DOES NOT have a hard-coded CD. (confirmed)
She casts the heal once she takes a certain amount of damage. (speculation, not confirmed)
If she casts heal before your Silencing shot is off CD, try to lower your DPS. (Anecdotal evidence)
This list has been compiled based on the previous comments on this page, thanks to all the hunters out there who took the time to share their experiences. If you thing anything needs to be changed or added to this list, reply in a comment.
Once you're done with this tame, move on to

Successfully solo tamed Hutia today on my 90 hunter (ilvl 512).
Kiting
I kited her (him?) around the big fallen log, which I found quite easy because when you're on opposite sides of the log she has a very long path to go around to get to you. Of course, I applied Concussive Shot as often as I felt necessary.
One thing to beware of is the rocks on the left side of her lair - it's not easy to jump on top of them, and the little torches will also block your movement, so take care to run around them.
Interrupting Spirit Heal
Others have mentioned that using Counter Shot wasn't so effective for them, however, I didn't have many problems with interrupting her Spirit Heal.
That said, I have my Counter Shot macro'ed as such:
#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/cast Counter Shot
This makes it so that if I want to cast Counter Shot while I am channeling Cobra Shot, the macro will stop the Cobra Shot channel and I can get Counter Shot off ASAP, as opposed to having to wait to finish casting Cobra Shot, by which time Spirit Heal has already been cast.
FWIW I also use this macro for regular PVE/PVP, and a similar macro for Deterrence and Master's Call.
Taming
As others have suggested in these comments, I used
被烧毁的雕文
. This brought my Tame Beast cast time to about 5.2 seconds (I assume it's affected by haste).
For the actual taming, she's immune to Freezing Trap, so that's not going to work. Given that she also melees for about 110k+, you'll have to somehow survive through that for 5+ seconds.
Therefore to tame her, I let her get within melee range, immediately popped Deterrence, and immediately started casting Tame Beast. Towards the end, she managed to get two melee hits off on me, but I survived.
EDIT:
I forgot that Tame Beast can be used from 30 yards. It's been a while since coming back to WoW on my hunter xD. So I guess you could lay down a frost trap and try that too, but the Deterrence method worked for me.
In Conclusion
This strat worked for me and I hope it works for others too! If you don't successfully interrupt one of her Spirit Heal casts, don't panic, just keep chipping away at her HP. If you're kiting her properly, she shouldn't be remotely near melee range to you anyway. So just be calm and interrupt her next cast. Before you know it she'll be at 30%.

One thing you need to know. If someone else has aggro, you will not be able to tame. I couldn't understand why I couldn't tame her as my friends brought her health down. One even asked if I was on my BM spec. Only after they died, and I was the only one who COULD have aggro, was I able to tame her. I died the first time too as my health was too low to survive a 180k hit. So, what we ended up doing was my hunter friend feigned death when we got her health down.

First time, she got too close and killed me during the kite.
Second time, she killed me right before the tame finished.
Third time's the charm, right? I kited her south until I hit the Arboretum, then headed to the west. I had to interrupt the tame multiple times to avoid getting killed, and finally tamed her!
Heading to Kun-Lai to tame Gumi and then Degu. Good luck fellow tamers! :)

I tamed him on Zuluhed around 1 PM.
A friendly word of advice to other hunters: If you can't get the beast past 95% and don't know how to interrupt his heal, give up and get better gear. There was a Dwarf Hunter who I watched struggle for five minutes before I flew down and put him out of his misery. Seriously. He couldn't get it past 95%.
So when I tried taming it myself, Mr. Butthurt Hunter swooped down, knowing he couldn't do damage to me himself, but instead CC'd me and my healer so the porcupine would kill us. He didn't try anything with the porcupine, but he harassed us until we found another hunter to keep him at bay so I could continue with the tame.
He ran off once I got Hutia down to 30% and started the actual tame.
I know, I sound like a jerk for doing this, but come on! If you know you're incapable, save yourself from the insane repair bill and move along. He will still be there when you are better geared and can put out the sufficient DPS to bring him down to 30%. Constantly harassing another playing and then asking for a "truce" isn't going to do much for you . . . Except get you killed repeatedly by said player. =I Anyways, Hutia is a great pet, as are all Spirit Beasts. Happy hunting!

Solo-tamed 08:08 December 4, 2013. Tarren Mill by myself, Greensleeves.
--------------- Preparation --------------------
Macro up your Concussive Shot and Counter Shot. Glyph Tame Beast, haste and damage buffs etc.

/stopcasting
/cast Concussive Shot
#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/cast Counter Shot
Place an Ice Trap in front of her and wait 25 seconds before pulling. Start with Cobra Shot > Concussive Shot > any other damage you can muster (Stampede, Glaives, Arcane Shot, Trinkets etc).
--------------The Kite----------------
Then the fun part, kite her around while peeling and make sure you always have her slowed with traps and concussive shot. This will allow you to pew pew her. When she casts her first Spirit Heal, use Counter Shot to cancel it.
Here's the important part, reduce your damage (I casted only Cobra Shots) until your Counter Shot become available for her next Spirit Heal. It seems like she heals at a fixed percent of her health around 80% 60% and 40%. (not confirmed).
Rinse and repeat.
-------------The Tame--------------
Make sure she is SLOWED and start tame as far away as you can.
PS I am tired, I might have missed something, but WOHOO!, only the red one left. Tamed Gumi easily by kiting with the same principle, ALWAYS HAVE CONCUSSIVE SHOT ON! Good luck!

It seems that the hunter taming it has to have aggro on Hutia. Me and a friend tried twice before I though we should try it like this, and on other mobs, this theory works. So, if you're helping a friend, make sure the hunter has the aggro.
We got pissed off after a few tries since when I did the DPS on him, I got aggro, and then the hunter coulnd't take the aggro away from him. So, we ended up him kiting Hutia around, while I interrupted Hutia's heals.
Hope this helps, and good luck! :-)

It's an easy tame and respawns really quickly unlike other spirit beasts you just kite it around her log and interrupt her heals and use concussive shot if you have to. I tamed it with my hunter will doing a crappy 20k dps but don't forget to dismiss your pet because it will die and you will have to Rez it and dismiss it to tame and be beast mastery.

If you're not an apt hunter, this is not an easy tame. If you are, it still takes a bit of skill to get. I'll tell you now, I'm not a very accomplished hunter, so when I saw that this was up and thought that I might tame it on my husband's hunter as a surprise--he'd yet to get any spirit pets--I found myself
very
frustrated.
I tried everything, but my mind apparently cannot multitask enough to kite and dps, so I decided to log onto my account on my other monitor and just play both characters to get it done. It went to be as expected...I died a lot anyway, then I realized on fundamental thing:
You cannot tame it if you do not have aggro.
It took about four wipes before I realized this. I also realized that after the buff disappears between 800K-900K health that keeps you from taming her, it does NOT come back if she heals.
What I ended up doing was having my paladin tank widdle her down until the buff went away. Then I'd wait for her next heal, interrupt, and stun her with Fist of Justice. Then popping my Divine Shield, my aggro table was wiped and I could then start taming on the hunter. Unfortunately, my husband doesn't have the glyph to tame faster...so she would come out of stun far too quickly and start hitting on me once more, thus breaking the tame attempt.
Thus, the final time, I just let her beat on my paladin until that toon died. Put a slowing frost trap out, popped disengage, and started my tame as soon as she started for me. Gave me enough time that she only hit me once before she was mine and her health was at 75% when I tamed her.
I hope this helps someone else out there, because this was probably the most frustrating thing I've ever tried to do.

I have read several posts now stating that Counter Shot doesn't work, or doesn't work very well. This hunter of mine (Nyetyri, Troll Hunter, Alexstrasza) JUST reached 90 just a few hours ago and I decided to see if I could take on the challenge. I read about the kiting and using Silencing Shot. However, I had Counter Shot instead. It worked perfectly fine every time. EVERY time. My ilvl is 445, and my DPS on Hutia was around 12k (understandable with no pet and constant kiting). It took a few tries to get down the kiting, and a couple times of not noticing the heal right away to get it down right, but I got her down.
One thing that turned out to be a no-brainer the first time I died: When I would begin the tame, I would need to be as FAR away from Hutia as possible. She does pretty hard damage. I was already at about 60% from a previous hit (managed to heal up a little from 50% when I got hit) when I started the tame. I got hit once during the tame which took me down close to 10%, and was milliseconds from being hit again when the tame completed. So make sure you are as FAR away from her as possible when you start the tame.
Abilities used:
Concussive Shot
Counter Shot
Serpent Sting
Arcane Shot
Cobra Shot
Glaive Toss
Ice Trap
Disengage when needed for extra distance.
I also had "Narrow Escape" chosen for my top tier talent.
Good luck to all! She's an adorable pet to have by your side. ^_^

Just tamed this guy on my hunter. Found him while on my monk questing, switched over. Got a Paladin in the area to help me and waited while he wailed on him until he was around 20% hp. I tossed down a freezing trap, pally hit divine shield, I hit him with a concussive shot and starting taming. The pally then stunned him and I finished the tame. Very easy tame if you have help. Switched back over to my monk and there he was again. He spawned almost instantly after my tame. Trying to talk another hunter into trying for him! :)

I didn't see this posted anywhere, so I thought it should be added.
For any hard tames: not only do you want the glyph, but you want to pop rapid fire as well. If you have another hunter with a corehound, a shaman or a mage with you, make sure to pop bloodlust as well. Any other haste buffs help, as well.

I was out and about in Jade Forest when I saw this cutie. My husband helped me tame Degu, but he wasn't around for this guy so I decided to give it a go on my own. After dying four times I managed to tame him! I just made sure to use Concussive Shot regularly and Counter Shot when necessary so he could not heal himself. Of course Glyph of Tame Beast came in handy as well ;D Otherwise he wasn't too bad. Happy hunting! <3

He is always staying in one spot. And he re-spawned around 1 hour. Unlike any other rare beasts or spirit beasts, he will give you a plenty of chance to try taming him as many times as you need. ALTHOUGH IT WAS VERY HARD FOR ME TO TAME HIM and I died a countless time, You don't need strong gears (but a strong attack weapon will be nice!) and as long as you have a good tactic and a strong will you can tame him.
(1) Before you start to tame him, you need to know if his health meter becomes bellow 30%.
You can check his health meter by Game menu setting -> Interface -> Status Text -> Target and Percentage.
(2) He will hit you very hard and his normal walking speed is very fast so you need to have an option for an extra speed for a moving and a taming.
You will be moving around while attacking him and you always need to maintain a certain distance between you and him.
Beware:
Concussive Shot
sometimes does not work. ALWAYS CHECK
Concussive Shot
Icon UNDER target PROFILE, IF IT IS NOT SHOWING MEANS IT DID NOT WORK, JUST RUN WITH YOUR LIFE (he walks fast and you will be caught and killed for sure).
If
Concussive shot
is working, you can walk backward and shoot him as hard as you can until
Concussive shot
effect disappears. Otherwise you need to run forward.
Without looking back, you can check his location by looking at Mini map (don't forget to put a check on Tracking --> Target in Mini map option). Also you need to set (max) zoom IN to check a distance between you and him.
Recommendation:
Concussive Shot
,
Scatter Shot
, and
Ice Trap
Minor Glyphs (Totaly agree) :
Tame Beast
&
Aspect of the Cheetah
(Make sure you CHOOSE
Aspect of the Cheetah
talent to work! REMEMBER: once you get a hit, you need to CHOOSE AGAIN the
Aspect of the Cheetah
talent to work!)
Major Glyphs (Kind of agree) :
Pathfinding
.. it can be a good thing that you can move fast but you need to get used to it for an attack range otherwise you are out of range and give him a chance to heal himself.
Later Note:
I read a thread bellow
Deterrence
and
Tame Beast
will seem to work together. Try it as well.
(Macro example #1)
#showtooltip
/target Hutia
/cast Deterrence
/cast Tame Beast
(3) He casts a spell to heal 30% of his own health, time to time.
When he starts to cast the spell, interrupt it with a
Counter Shot
. Sometimes you see a green light coming around from his feet but it can be a fake sign so wait until he starts to cast a spell. If
Counter Shot
cool down has not expired then try
Widow Venom
.
Note:
Scatter Shot
also can interrupt his spell but its attack range is so short and right after he stop being idle he will cast the healing spell again so I do not recommend it.
(4) Battle will be reset if you are not careful.
Do not put your pet out when you fight with him. When you dismiss your pet before taming him or keep your pet die for a while it will trigger the battle to be reset and he will go back from where he was before. Also if you go too far away from the first area he was before it also resets the battle. You may however choose to use a
Feign Death
to reset your battle if you are about to die.
Later Note:
I read a thread bellow if you set your pet
Growl
off and put him abandoned (not dismiss) right before
Tame Beast
it seem to work. Try it as well if you want to boost your attack power a little bit.
(5) Choose a path wisely.
I use the path around the mountain which right next to it (I walk a path right next to a flight master and three Pandaren NPCs having a camp fire) a CLOCKWISE direction. You need to kill two tigers and other beasts in front of stairs and leave loots because they will stay dead longer. I used to use the same path counterclockwise direction but he will choose a different path on the hill and it is very difficult to lead him to the right path where I want him to walk.
(6) Those Macros can be helpful.
(Macro example #2)
#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/target Hutia
/cast Concussive Shot
(Macro example #3)
#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/target Hutia
/cast Counter Shot
(7) Set the tactics right together in your own way.
He will cast a first healing spell in the beginning so I need to stick around the first area until he cast a first healing spell and after interrupting it I will start running. He will cast the each healing spell again around the half path of the circle path (which I recommend in the thread above) so when I comes to the half path of the circle path I need to slow him down and stick around (but not too close) and interrupt his healing spell. Then I will start running again. - repeat -
When he gets bellow 30% of health. I choose time AFTER INTERRUPTING his healing spell, put
Ice Trap
then when I see the ice trap icon appears under his profile, cast
Concussive Shot
and use
Tame Beast
with a (Macro example #1) in this thread above. Watch while he is being taming to you... Done!
(8) Now take those considerations and start taming him. And remember you need to be a beast mastery to tame him.
Good luck hunting!

Used macros in midobu 's post. Kited around the log. Aspect of Cheetah with no glyph (though glyph is probably best), kept concussive shot up, interrupted heals, used tamed macro. Done after some tries.
Important to interrupt heals and just use the macros. I mainly kept serpent sting up and it was a fairly easy tame once I got the hang of it.
Hope this helps.

Just keep up with the daze and traps and

Just a hint to the Hunters, I had been hunting this pretty creature and I didn't actually know this, so to any that don't know; It's immune to Freezing Trap
but
not Disengage with Narrow Escape, that'll help out because I thought "Oh well if it's caught by Narrow Escape then it'll be caught in Freezing Trap."
Nope!
I needed to Disengage so that I wouldn't die. Good luck, it spawns pretty quickly, so have fun ^^

Don't stop to countershot the heal if you've already started the tame. The tame spell will work even if he gets a heal off mid-tame.
At level 100 you can take his hits easily; you only get hit for around 9k wearing mail.

I managed to tame him and the other two spectral porcupines in about 15 minutes (so I guess their respawn time is pretty fast - I was reading around that it is circa 10-15 minutes). As a level 110 you just have to punch him naked (this is important, or you're going to kill him) until he has 30% life (otherwise he cannot be tamed), than you can tame him. Super easy!

Level 110 or higher.
1. Turn off War Mode.
2. Strip off your gear - all of it.
3. Fly up very high.
4. Dismount, fall, and die.
5. Spirit Rez to get the 75% stat reduction.
6. Equip a low level gun such as the Heirloom gun.
7. Light DPS then tame at 30%.
8. If it tries to heal during the tame, hit it with Counter Shot and then tame.

Tamed the first one around 2:20 pm on the Twisting Nether server and the last one at about 2:30pm

Patch 7.3.5
update: As a level 80, this mob is 80, thanks to new level-scaling feature.
Patch 8.1.5
update: Be careful if you're anywhere near level 120. I had a tank-spec Demonhunter friend come tank it for me while I tamed on a level 80 hunter. Unfortunately for me, a single cast of Shear oneshotted it for 55k. Even though the tooltip for that ability reads just 859 damage. So if you're a 120 hunter, you'll probably one-shot it with regular abilities.
I was finally
able to tame Hutia as a level 80
by having the DH taunt, but not attack at all. Then on the hunter, I would: let my pet attack > pull aggro -> die -> rez pet, repeat. I simultaneously used some attacks on my Hunter, but only when Feign Death was available. This way, I could dump aggro back on the high level DH at any time. Once I got Hutia to 30%, I dismissed pet, checked behind me to make sure there's a path, placed a tar trap on the path I planned to kite Hutia through, and proceeded to pull aggro myself (required for tame to work). As soon as I got aggro, I cast a Concussive Shot, and as soon as she hit the tar trap, I started to cast Tame Beast.
This actually required 2 attempts: the first time I got the timing wrong, let her get too close, and got one-shotted. My DH friend held aggro while I ran back, but didn't risk interrupting the heal for fear of a one-shot.

If you're already level 120, don't bother taming him, there's a very good chance you'll one-shot him no matter what you do. I even tried disarming my bow and hit him with my "bare hands", he still died. An auto attack from my bow does 159K damage, I had to leave and find another higher-level spirit beast.

Just did this today for the second time as a lvl 115 hunter. Went to Honeydew village I believe and bough a lower level crossbow. Removed all my gear and took rez sickness as someone suggested. I didn't even have to kite him around. I only had the bow on me and I was able to stand there and tame him after only a min. or so. You just have to lower his health enough to remove the buff.

At lvl120 taming wasn't bad. Once found (Gumi/Hutia/Degu) strip off all your armour and weapons, fly way up high and drop to your death. When you come back, resurrect and get the 75% sickness. Very important to get the resurrection sickness. I then flew over to where it was, and equipped my fishing pole as a weapon. No weapon sometimes works but if they heal then it's a much longer battle. Fishing pole worked fine. Once down to 30%, it was easy to tame.

Patch 9.x, level 41 hunter vs level 41 Hutia: Using a clefthoof pet, barely within tar trap range, took him down to below 30%. Waited for him to use his heal, interrupted it, threw a tar trap, dismissed pet, and started spamming tame. He didn't get to hit me before I was successful.
In previous attempts, I discovered freezing trap doesn't work, and that he has the power to two-shot me.

I can confirm (at least for the time being) you CAN get naked and punch these critters without having to die and take rez sickness at lvl50 (pre-Shadowlands prepatch). For me it was two hits and they went down to 15%. Not sure how that will change once we get into Shadowlands and start leveling, but for now it is doable :D

I don't know if this is true of all spirit beasts, but I was able to tame Bulvinkel at level 12, before I got the Exotic Beasts ability. I am, however, unable to summon him as my primary pet. So, it seems that with Shadowlands, you can tame an exotic pet you just can't summon it until you hit 39. I have not done extensive testing, I just had this happen and thought it might be useful information for other hunters :)

This has been mentioned in other comments for these three porcupine spirit beasts but I feel the need to reiterate; kill yourself first and accept rez sickness. Do this, strip down to no gear or weapon and just punch each one down to 30% and begin the tame. Really quick and these beasts are on ~5 minute respawn so you can even get multiples with little effort.
No kiting. No friends needed. No special trinkets/gear. Just you, naked, punching a porcupine while you're sick.

-Tabard & Fishing pole equipped only
-Check to make sure he's up
-Fly up & fall to your death
-Talk to Spirit Healer to rez & get sickness
-Make sure pets are dismissed & space available to tame
-Fly back & melee a few times to get within tameable HP range
Cheers!

So this may have been more difficult than it needed to be, but my bf and I definitely had fun with this. Keep in mind this only works if you have another person in your party who's lower level.
I (lvl 70 hunter in Dragonflight) didn't have the Whole Body Shrinka toy so my bf went on his Level 61 Death Knight, removed all his armor, died, and came back with the rez sickness debuff.
When my bf came back, we started a duel with each other (we did this bc otherwise he wasn't taking any damage from Hutia). Once the duel commenced, he autoed Hutia about 3-4 times until it was around 5k - 10k HP. Then I shot my bf until he was 1HP (ultimately winning the duel) and let Hutia auto him to death. Right before my bf died, I used binding shot (can also use the toy Fruit Basket) to make sure I had interacted with Hutia in order to gain/transfer the aggro (otherwise Hutia just reset). Once Hutia started targeting me I was able to tame!
It was a trial and error process, and it looks like there are easier and more effective ways to do this. But we had fun nonetheless and we just wanted to share ^^
