Alright, where are these guys?
These are mobs on Isle of Giants. Currently they are all hostile, elite and range from lvl90-91.
They are grouped close together and are of keen interest to both hunters and companion pet collectors. The reason for this is they have a chance of dropping:
Which hunters need in order to tame the Direhorns on the island.
*** - This dropped for me twice today for my JCs, never got it on PTR but saw it twice so they might also drop other world recipe drops introduced 5.2.
***I've run all my hunters through here now and there are a tone of new recipes that the dinomancers drop! LW, JC and BS, so a fun mob to farm recipes as well.
They also drop Giant Dinosaur bones, gold, cooking mats & a chance of dropping the above mentioned items. For those wondering the pets dropped more often then the tomes, but this was just my experience and RNG is RNG.
They can hit like trucks but you can CC them, however, It is quite easy to pull more than one and if you do and you're solo you may find it hard to survive. CC skills & interrupt spells are required to breeze through farming these mobs :)
All Dinomancers have a self heal that can be interrupted (silent shot for me) and will continue casting it until they transform into a direhorn, from there on it's a simple tank and spank. The self heal heals back to full health so you do want to manage that until the transformation. If you have ilvl470+ you should have no issue with the self heal, all that was needed from my hunter was one silent shot then the transformation happened however on my baby ilvl450 hunter things did get a bit messy and the fight took longer as my DPS was not high enough, at times, and a second self heal would be cast. In those situations I had to either fall on my scatter shot (warning they will insta cast self heal again once it wears off) &/or readiness to help me get them to the transform stage. Other classes who have good interrupt spells will have no issue, others will have to either get better gear (for higher DPS) or group up to burn through them.
Come live I think hunters who are after the tome will find it beneficial grouping with other hunters to manage the mobs better on their hunts for the tome (IMHO) because as of right now it's very easy to pull 4+ elite dinomancers (who have self heals back to 100% regardless of widow venom) as well as nearby masses of elite dinosaurs. Having a friend with a similar goal means you can help each other obtain the tome without getting your tooshies handed to you. Alternatively if you're not a hunter and want to collect the pets but are having issues pst other players around and see if they don't mind grouping up, even try psting a hunter because some may only be there for the tome.... just think about it if you're having issues.
For those who want to go it solo please be aware there is a limited number of Dinomancers you can safely pull without pulling the rest of the tribe around them. You can definitely solo these guys just stock up on invisi pots (if you don't have any stealth spells) and don't forget to pop into your faction base camp to purchase some
which will also help by pass the dino herds.
Some other things to note, the re-spawns for these Dinomancers, currently in PTR, is not great and I found there was a lot of idle time between the respawns of the dinomancers I felt was safe to pull solo. You also can not fly on Isle of Giants and in between Dinomancer groups are elite groups of tightly packed dinosaurs (everything is elite on this island) so please make sure you plot your route carefully, invisi pots, stealth spells will be needed if you have no interest in facing off these packs alone.
With regards to numbers there are around 60, this includes the 'mother ship' a large warship which houses roughly 25 dinomancers all close together. This is where I would go if I was in a group. The dinomancers are close together and the ship is flanked with giant devilsaurs but to have so many dinomancers close together in one spot is a farming dream come true. The easiest spot to farm solo is the mud pits, central on the island, as there are 6 dinomancers that are nicely spaced out.
Whatever method you choose best of luck hunting for your pets/bones/tome.
If you feel like going after these guys solo, there's a group of them in the tar-pits near the center of the island. They can be pulled solo as long as you stay near the center of the pits (and away from the local devilsaurs).
Anyone else notice the tops of their heads are missing in the model viewer?
It took me a few times to get my first kill because the guy kept self-healing but for anyone who has low gear and dps you need to get them to about 1000k before they change into the dinos. Pop all your CDs and then its plain sailing. Tank and spank for the dinos they turn into.
They transform, once their HP drop under 1 mio HP. that normally means that you have to interrupt their dinomend at least once.
Shouldnt be too difficult to solo in 5.1 lfr gear (I did it with a 481 frost mage) just interupt the heal, kite if you can and try not to pull more then one at a time.
Also, I suspect that the (current) droprate on wowhead for the pets is way off (probably because not enough samples have been recorded yet). I killed a total of 14 to get all four pets, curiously enough I got one of each - no doubles.
These guys can also drop the books for the achievement
, I just looted
in the tar pits in the center of the
, and it counted toward the achievement. So I assume the rest of the books can also drop from them, they don't just come from the
like the achievement states. Added bonus for those farming
in group of four we farm those for like hour and half, hunter got his book, and all others got bunch of pets, also we got 2x egg which hatch in 3 days
The heal they cast is called
and is on roughly a 20CD, so typically if you are fighting them 1v1 you should only have to interrupt 1 maybe 2 casts. Silence and interrupts both work.
Another thing to note: He casts
at 50% health, BUT if he is stunned during this time and goes below 45% health, he will NOT transform and you will have to keep worrying about interrupts on his heal.
Note - they don't always change to dino form at 1k health...can be frustrating at times
If you have trouble with their healing, get a gorilla pet. Their special ability 'pummel' is an interrupt ability.
After 55 kills, I looted a total of 12 of the Zandalari pets.
I was surprised to find that these little guys can actually have different stats. The stat combos that I have seen so far are as follows:
145 Health/14 Power/11 Speed
148 Health/12 Power/12 Speed
145 Health/11 Power/14 Speed
I am having wonderful luck on the drops. Last night me and my bf got all the little pets and my dino book. Today I got 2 of each of the pets and 2 more of the books and some of the other books for the achievement.
Few more details:
Heal is purely self-heal, i.e. it won't heal others in the group
On tank, they hit fairly weakly, so I could pull groups of three without having to use panic buttons (ilevel 390 Guardian). Of course, due to the self-heal, you can kill them only one by one
Stuns will interrupt the heal, but they will re-cast it as soon as the stun wears off
Heal is usually cast about 15...20s into the battle, but after that the period varies - always more than 20s, though
I cannot be sure, but it looks that they won't cast heal in Dino Form
Heal cast is much faster than Pandaria rares
Dinomancers will revert to humanoid form after death and cannot be skinned

The pets appear to be about a 25% drop.
These can be a frustrating fight if you don't have a frequent interrupt/silence or a good burst button. They don't hit very hard but they will keep dino-mending back to full health for quite some time.
If you play as a tank, try and grab as many of these guys as you can. If you can pull 4~5, that'll be about 20k extra dps from Vengeance. After pulling them, focus on damaging one and interrupting his heals until he turns into his dinosaur form. This gives them a 50% extra damage bonus, but prevents them from healing. Use this to your advantage as an extra vengeance booster: just leave him be and focus another dinomancer, interrupt his heals, bring him to dino form, swap target, rinse and repeat. This will give you the most damage, and more damage allows you to roll faster from camp to camp.
these mobs spawn same place for small groups. 3-5 mobs
usually 1-1 stand alone or patrol, and 3 of them make small group
as destro warlock, it was easy to clear them

When fighting these make sure you got Silence shot and only shoot it when you got the mob to about 80% I soloed a few with basic 463 Heroic gear recommended higher if possible they have about roughly 1.9M health they heal themselfs as a cast can be interrupted if you a hunter trying to solo these spec should be survival wtih a pet tank
Judging by the amount of carrots they drop, their mums must be very disappointed that they don't eat their vegetables but carry them around instead ;-)

Just a word of warning, it could just be a bug, but I noticed that when there were a pair of Dinomancers together and I used freezing trap on one while I killed the other, when the trap broke (timer ran out) the other mob came straight for me! So freezing trap will aggro these mobs. I also noticed that they do their self heal as soon as the trap breaks so suspect it's some sort of bug.
I see your after some mounts, an little farming lover perhaps? Well i just got the guide for you then.
Keep in mind this is to cover what drops and suggestions on to farm the bigger mobs aswell "Father-mobs"

= The bigger Father-like mobs do require you to group up with (recommended tank+healer) 3+ group.

If you are a
going solo for the
(as I'm doing for the pets now, cos already got the book three times) I'd advice you to use a macro for your
, so you don't have troubles with the
#showtooltip Silencing Shot
/cast Silencing Shot
#showtooltip Counter Shot
/cast Counter Shot
(for some reason, only one "/stopcasting" doesn't seem to work)
Whenever you see the casting bar of
on the Dinomancer, just click your macro and continue to DPS.
I recommend you get into the tar pits in the middle of the island.
Unless Oondasta is there!
If so, I'd stay in the camp at about 45 75, near the shore, but keep an eye on the Direhorns
Also, keep an eye on your
. Since your pet will be tanking for you (as there's really no room for kiting), it can get really awful for the poor little fella when the Dinomancer becomes a Direhorn himself.
Last, but not least, if your Silence is on cooldown when the Dinomancer starts casting
, then just
wait for your Silencing Shot to refresh,
since as soon as he gets off the trap he'll start casting again.
The cooldown for
(about 20 sec.) is a little shorter than
's (24 sec.) (hence, also shorter than
's, which are 30 sec.). So if you are finding it a little difficult (because of low DPS) to deal with this guys,
do not stun them
) when they are about to reach to 50% health or they won't tranform into Direhorns, forcing you to continue to deal with
I'd also suggest you to save your
in case you accidentally prevent a Dinomancer from transforming, wich would end in you not being able to cast neither Silencing Shot, nor Scatter Shot + Freezing Trap when he casted Dino-Mending for the third time (about 20%~40% health)
(Readiness is gone :'( )
(look upstairs): According to him,
also interrupt the casting of Dino-mending. Haven't tested it yet, but it's worth a try.
If so, I'd suggest you also macro them as shown at the begining of the post for Silencing Shot
In about 80~90 kills I got:

A few greens

Tons of vegetables
(*) Not exact, but quite similar to the long gone and deeply missed
I went with my brand new level 90 hunter (417 ilvl) and tried to solo one of these guys. I barely made a dent in him. Had to feign death just to get out of the situation. So lame watching my core hound die.
As I was walking around Isle of Giants today, I was checking out the model of these guys and thought something looked off, and then it hit me... they're trolls, and yet they're standing perfectly straight, not slouched like we're used to seeing. They seem to use the night elf male animations.
Just found out about how to tame the Direhorns on here about 15-20 mins ago.. I managed to get my Tome needed for taming off of my 2nd Zandalari Dinomancer - much to my amazement it didn't seem as hard to down these guys as I thought it was going to be. I credit my ability to accomplish this to all of the awesome feedback/advice I read here on this page. The few things that I mainly focused on were: 1. Using the Ferocity talented pet for the Heart of the Phoenix spell (just in case) 2. Like many have already stated SPAM the Mend Pet 3. Pay attention to the Dino-mend! Using Silence and Concussive Shot and Scatter Shot when silence was on CD. I also added Widom Venom into my frantic rotation just incase I missed the Dino-mend - (I honestly don't know if this helped or not). The Dino-mend is the big thing to watch out for otherwise you will be there fighting these guys forever.
Seems like the dropchance of raptors has been nerfed "to the ground". Sure, it was quite excessive, when AH was filled with hundreds of raptors in the first day, but they still have a valid purpose - 62.5g vendor price. **** my laziness that I ignored farming it back then. I could pull the whole ship, kill them in about 5-7mins, get 3-5 raptors. Now I've done two full ship clears and got 1 raptor. Is that even ****** serious?
For how long will botting prevent NORMAL players from getting NATURAL gold? What's the problem with spending an hour farming and getting 1-2k for it?
Edit: I suppose next thing they do is make them heal lowest nearby dino-like creature, instead of themselves. Then I won't step on that bloody island anymore...
And yes, I am a DK.
As a 90 hunter with about 470 gear this is not too bad. I usually pull them in pairs and dps one while hitting him once with silencing shot which is enough to put him into dino form. I then burn him down and repeat the same on the second guy.
I use Terrorpene (turtle) pet for the tank.
On a side note while farming the other good stuff i do end up with alot of vegetables for cooking which is good since i dont play the farmville crap to get them. :)
I managed to get 2 of the dino companion pet drops thanks to group that was farming the mobs that already had all the companion pet dinos dropping from those guys I tried to solo a troll but unfortunately my goblin level 90 BM hunter is a tad under geared so if ayone help me get the tome for my hunter I would appreciate it her name is Azuriah and iam on the eu dragonblight realm
For tank specs trying to farm these in large groups, I've found the best way is to burn them down one at a time to ~50% when the switch to dino mode, then move on to the next one. That way they stop healing themselves and your AoEs can do most of the rest of the work. Just make sure you can handle the extra damage as they do hit harder after transforming. As a blood DK in DPS gear, I could take on at least a dozen at once without needing to use any cooldowns.
After around 20-30 kills I got mine
. I'm a 90 BM hunter.
If they are stunned while they go past the 50% mark, they will not turn into a dinosaur, making them a lot easier to kill.
Here are a few tips if you are an undergeared BM hunter, like I was when I started killing these guys for the drop.
1) MD to you pet to pull away from other mobs, just to be careful not to pull more than the one.
2)Use a tank pet (I used my bear). Keep your pet healed (I made sure to have Glyph of Mending on).
3)Take your time with the DPS. We don't have mana, we can go all day. Be patient. The reason you want to take your time is to allow Silent Shot to reset. If you DPS him down too fast, he'll cast his heal before Silent Shot can CD. If you need that split second more, Scatter Shot. He will, however, cast it again once Scatter Shot fades, so be ready with Silent Shot. Also, remember that you have Readiness. If you think Silent Shot won't CD in time, hit your Readiness to reset all your CDs.
4) Once he's in Dino form (50% hp), it's just a straight damage fight. Just make sure you keep putting on Mend Pet. I did not have any trouble with my pet dying as long as I kept Mend Pet on him.
Edited to add: Don't forget that you also have Freezing Trap which does work on these mobs. I had toss that out too as I waited for my CD on Silent Shot.
Of course, you can always wait until you have better gear, but I'm pretty darn stubborn and wanted my Dino pet
not later ;)
These steps worked for me so I thought I'd post them here just in case someone else is in a similar boat.
Happy Hunting! And Good Luck!
At ilvl 505, these guys are an absolute pushover. I ran around mass-murdering these guys in SV spec, and while pulling two at a time can get a little hairy, one at a time is a joke. Didn't even need a tanking pet, i just turned my ferocity-specced hyena's growl on and kept mend pet rolling. Just nuke them down, and they usually won't even get a chance to cast dino-mending. Still, don't get over-confident - one troll is fine, 2 can get hairy, 3 or more and get ready to hit feign death and revive pet.
One item to note is that, if you use Freezing Trap or Wyvern Sting to CC a dinomancer so that it doesn't pull with its nearby buddy, as soon as you break that CC he will immediately begin to cast dino-mending, so don't break the CC with a big hit like Chimera shot or Explosive Shot.
The best spot I found for killing these guys are on the southeastern coast, right next to where the Zandalari ship is anchored. The beach contains 4 dinomancers, and just up the hill is a camp with 7 more, including several groups that are tightly clustered together. I recommend taking Wyvern Sting for an extra CC, especially when pulling the trio of trolls surrounding the bonfire - if you pull one, they all aggro on you, and with 3 dinomancers your pet will quickly be overwhelmed.
i'm not sure if the pet drop rate is that low. i got 3 pets in 4 kills
Occasionally I have gotten 2 Giant Dinosaur Bones instead of one! Considering the looong grind that you will have if you are after the mount or the pet (or both), its a nice bonus here and then!
Hi, just a quick note for
, and maybe other specialized
Knocking off these guys solo is tough with their Dino-Heal, or whatever it's called. Every 20 seconds this dude can heal himself back to 100%.
So, of course, the warlocks need an interrupt. Really hard to find, but it's there.
Sadly, the pup (
) pet loves to "eat magic"; but he won't normally stop this quickie 4 second spell. Controlling this "pet" with CTRL-1 or CTRL-4 is a nice idea, but doesn't generally work out as intended. Even if he could stop the
's heal-cast, the pup has a 24-second cooldown on "
", which is his only hope.
The warlock will need, with Demonology specialization, to
into a Demon quickly, then (quickly!) blast the Dinomancer with the
spell, which is only available in Demon-form. Best practice is to
back to your regularized Warlock-form after you interrupt this one.... then mentally count to 20 (better yet, count to 15, and get ready), then
back to Demon, and interrupt the dude with
Generally, I can knock these
out, solo, with 2 interrupts, thereafter, he will transform into an actual Dino, and go down easily. This takes several iterations until you'll get used to it; don't lose patience! You really, really, really do NOT want to sit the action house and pay 1350G for one of those dropped pets.
Of note, the regular form of
will knock the Dinomancer back a couple body lenghts (10 feet or so), which is quite undesirable; the dudes hang very close to one another, and fighting more than 1 of 'em is no fun solo for the Warlock.
So you'll want to find the minor
Glyph called "Carrion Swarm"
. Once you activate this minor glyph, you can interrupt his spell without slamming him around backward several feet. Of course, this will probably require
Tome of the Clear Mind
Sorry if my post was far too obvious, but I found the info on battle.net, and found it really useful.
Wanted a dino so-o-o bad... level 90, iLevel 468 equipped BM Hunter... yep a little low... I decided to stay close to Beebler's Wreck and take on the two single Dinomancers just up the hill from Beebler's... I was able to take either of those two on singly without aggro'ing the other...BUT, with a Tenacity tank, I just couldn't seem to bring the dinomancer health low enough to have him convert to Dino form, so I switched to a Ferocious pet... things got better.. just keep the healing up, be ready to interrupt (Counter Shot) when he tries to heal... then burn him with damage til dead, dead, dead... I was able to acquire the Tome for learning how to tame Direhorns after taking down 6 of the Dinomancers... take your time.. at this low of level, don't try taking on multiple Dinomancers... just one at a time... settle back and allow these two to respawn and you should be able to do it... good luck to all... :)
Current equipped ilvl is 481 (396k health) and using a wolf on tenacity (310k health), soloing groups up to 4 of these guys at a time. They die one by one of course, since I can't Countershot all 4, but they're easy to fight. Maybe the extra magic damage from mastery helps, between Serpent Sting and traps, not to mention Black Arrow and Explosive Shot.
and spamming a macro to cast misdirection on my focus target (pet of course) every so often and the fights are cake.
Doesn't make the book drop any faster though...
I can confirm one of the pets will drop with your first kill of the day, and you can switch characters to get another. I dont know if they will drop after your first one if you keep farming. Ive been farming for a few hours and only get one on the first kill of the day.
If you are farming for the Dinomancy, these guys are soloable pre-90. I went there as an 88 Hunter with some quest greens and a few dungeon blues, and they are not that difficult. Get a Water Strider for waterwalking and just run across the sea.
Pull them one at a time and pull them somewhere safe because they have a quickish respawn. They heal at around 75% so you need to Counter Shot that, and keep Mend Pet going. They turn into a Direhorn around 45% and wont heal anymore, they do a little more damage but nothing Mend and a Tenacity pet can't handle.
Got my book ~6 kills in, thank the RNG gods. Lootable pre-90 but requires 90 to use.
just got my Book of Dinomancy after 10 kills. Stayed in the center killed 2 respawns, took about 20 minutes.
Just did 2 laps of the Island, got 1 of each pet and x3 Toenibbler. Every pet I dropped was onboard the ship. Hope that helps.
camped as of path 8.2, likely due to the Zandalari Kneebiter pet being strongly recommended for Nazjatar Pet Battles
