do they continue to cast burning acid when they're brought down?
Yes, they certainly do. They will continue to do so until killed.
My question is: if we have a ranged-centric group where the melee-able characters are either tanks or on drone duty, is there any need to taunt down the spinners at all? Do they do more DPS while hanging (or do they do less after being taunted down)?
EDIT: We finally got Beth'tilac down, and the spinners were fairly key to our issues. We had been focusing on the drone and the spiderlings first, and cleaning up the spinners later. The spinners are doing X amount of random raid DPS, multiplied by the amount of spinners alive at a time. (The drone also does the same random acid spit ability, by the way). Instead what we switched to was a spinner-centric DPS priority.
1. One DPS focuses completely on spiderlings. Another DPS is ready to support if necessary.
2. Remaining DPS focus fire on the spinners while the tank takes the drone to the southwest, trying to face it away from the party.
3. Six spinners always spawn each wave (on 10-man normal at least). Once they're dead no more will spawn until the next Smoldering Devastation.
4. Focus fire Drone till dead.
Rinse and repeat.
Having 4 or more alive at once is a horrible draw on your healers' mana. The spiderlings do little to no damage, the drone does tank-worthy damage to the tank only. But if you're wiping in phase one, it's likely due to not cleaning up the spinners. If left unchecked, they will wreck your raid.
If you're still overwhelmed in this scenario, your DPS may simply not be efficient enough. Try to get your DPS communicating to make sure you don't have four DPS working on four separate spinners at once, cause they're still doing 4x acid DPS instead of 3, then 2, then 1.
As a Paladin tank on the ground, I found what worked great was wait for my drone to spit at me, then take the opportunity to run around a little and use Righteous Defense to taunt up to 3 spinners to me at once. If you can cluster them together, the DPS can AOE them down very nicely and won't get their casts interrupted by melee attacks. Never turn the drone if you're not sure when it's about to spit, though.
With the recent changes to threat, too, there's no reason to really be hitting the drone if you've got aggro. Focus on taunting the spinners to you, and go nuts with AOE attacks and Shield of Righteousness to help stop their random spit DPS. Always focus on the one with the least health first.
