Vanessa Vancleef is the last boss of Deadmines heroic (Only in heroic). She will start by poisoning you with Nightmare Elixir. You will wake up in the Goblin Foundry (The area where Foe Reaper was), your whole party chained and slowly lowered to the forge. You'll get freed when you click all ventiles. The first phase is a long gauntlet, where you will experience every bosses nightmare and kill the bosses again (They are lot weaker now though). First will be Glubtok, you need to make it to the doors below without dying on icicles and fire. Once you make it to the doors, you will need to kill Glubtok again. He melees and puts a debuff on tank. Once Glubtok is dead, nightmare will shift to Helix's nightmare. You will need to kill Helix, who is close to army of spiders, which will hit very hard. After Helix is dead, the spiders disappear and nightmare shifts once again. Foe Reaper's nightmare contains spark walls. They will kill you almost immediately if touched. Once Foe Reaper has been taken care of, nightmare will shift one more time, and Ripsnarl's nightmare commences. You need to make sure that the three members of Harrington family survives before worgen packs kill them. If even one of the family members die, it will be a wipe. After the Ripsnarl is beaten, nightmare is over and 2nd phase will commence. Vanessa will summon adds through phase 2. When she is at 66% and 33% health, she will detonate the ship. You have limited time to click on rope, and swing your self to safety. When she is at 1% health, she will commence a suicide by exploding herself and killing any player near him.
Um, what if I want to join her......friends with benefits? :p
God, she plays TGC !
What balthus93 describes above is a very good description. I just want to add that during the spider nightmare, we stayed in the corner next to the door to avoid as many spiders as possible while dpsing Helix. Quite a few spiders came, but not too many to handle.
Vanessa VanCleef is a unique encounter. Rather than attacking her directly a majority of the fight, you will first fight the previous bosses in their 'nightmares'. The fight is initiated by clicking the note left behind after defeating Captain Cookie. A short bit of dialogue goes on, and the nightmares begin.
Phase One -
The fight begins with your group being lowered into the forge. You must click the vent levers on all sides of the forge (they sparkle), so that you may escape to the ground. Fire will be all over the floor, and large circles will appear on the ground where rocks will fall, dealing damage. AVOID THE FIRE at all costs. It deals massive damage, and dazes. The falling rocks deal significant damage as well, but it are more survivable.
Your group must make its way over to Glubtok, who is at the far end of the room. At the bottom of the ramp, the fire is impassable simply by continuing down the ramp - it may be avoided by jumping over the side. The rest of the room has small paths for you to navigate your way around the fire. Once you reach Glubtok, it is a simple tank and spank to defeat him.
Phase Two -
Helix will spawn where Glubtok has died, with spiders all around the rest of the room. If your group stays close to Helix's spawn point, it is possible to aggro very few spiders. Should you have a group member aggro more spiders, the tank should pick them up. They deal significant damage, and should be avoided. Helix is another simple spank and tank.
Phase Three -
Foe Reaper 5000
You will continue through the door behind Helix into the tunnel. There are several rotating chains of sparks that you must navigate your way through (reminiscent of the slimes in Naxxramas). DO NOT touch the sparks - they are a one shot KO. There are a few places around the room, between the spark chains, where it is possible to stop and resurrect someone should one of your members fail. Once you reach Foe Reaper, it is as simple as the previous encounters to defeat him.
Phase Four -
In this phase, you will need to save the members of Admiral Ripsnarl's family, by saving them all from the worgen attacking them. None of them are allowed to die, or the encounter will be failed. The first to be saved is
, at the end of the dock immediatley ahead. Simply have the tank pick up the three worgen attacking her. She will grant you a run speed buff, and your group will continue straight down the dock to save
., who also has three worgen attacking him. After saving him, continue up to the ship. Take a right at the top of the ramp, and continue to the top of the path. Here,
is being held over the ledge by
. You must kill James before he drops his wife. There is no tanking required here, so your tank may throw on a two-hander/switch to cat form to assist in DPSing him down. Continue up to the top of the ship after his defeat, where the next phase begins.
Phase Five -
This is the final phase. Your group will fight Vanessa directly, now. Overall, she is not difficult - she will spawn adds which need to be tanked and killed to keep the group from becoming overwhelmed. She will occasionally pop deflection, and shadowstep to different members of the group. During the fight, she will periodically become unattackable and threaten to blow up the ship. Your group must run to the edge of the ship (opposite of where you entered from the dock), and click the ropes on the ground to swing away before you are killed. NOTE TO DRUIDS - you CANNOT click the ropes while shapeshifted, so make sure you switch to caster before you hop on the rope. This rinses and repeats until she has 1 HP remaining, during which you will swing away from the ship again, and she will detonate the final explosives along with herself.
Note, that should you die in the previous phases, you may start the encounter over by teleporting to the forge. Make sure your group is buffed, mana'd up, and prepared before re-entering the forge, as there will be fire all over the ground and rocks still falling. Besides that, the encounter not overly difficult and is one of the more enjoyable, unique fights in the game. Good luck, and have fun!
After swinging back from the ropes, Vanessa won't immediately engage, we used this time to let our healers mana regen a bit, we waited about 20 seconds before resuming the fight. I can't say for certain or not if she will despawn if left there for any extended amount of time, so be warned.
So this is what VanCleef meant by "The Brotherhood
edit: fixed, thanks Jacobstx
Wiping on phases doesnt matter. You can ress, drink, enter instance, use ports, etc after each phase.
Easy to get to Vanessa.
Vanessa its pretty much tank & spank with adds and some seconds of
Just tank him on the other side of the ship, the opposite side of where you enter the ship. There the ropes will spawn.
Easy if you assign 1 rope per person.. you will use them about 3 times in the fight.
She doesnt hit hard..so its super easy.
You can click ropes in Tree of Life
. (Still a shapeshift)
Ferals need to get back to caster. Dont know moonkin yet.
Just completed this on my druid. Easily the most unique, interesting, and fun heroic boss fight I've done on this game. Kudos to the designers at Blizzard.
And I can confirm Ignazio's statement...you CAN swing on the ropes while in tree form. I was still in tree form when she blew the ship the final time, and I was able to swing away to safety.
I was doing this isntace first time today as tank , when we faied at the phase 2 spiders all leaved becouse they said if you did you cant do it again , is that true ?
I for one would have loved to see Captain Cookie's nightmare.
Did this fight remind anyone else of Inception?
Has a belt graphic matching rogue tier 6, of which no item in-game actually matches.
Lmao my group ran 1 at a time through the lightning maze, only to be greeted at the other end by the foe reaper and get 3 shot one after another.
Only a chance to drop a Chaos Orb... intended or bug?
(My group didn't get one today)
The anti-magic zone looking thing that the mage add puts down is a 50% damage increase if you stand inside it. So, in my opinion its best to kill the rogue and warrior adds first, so that, the mage has time to put this down then everyone run in it, and nuke the boss into the next rope swing phase. Rinse, and repeat.
I did this today with my group. We didnt really know what was going on, so after we started the boss our healer and one of our dps died to the fire. Me and 2 other dps proceeded to kill the first boss, and proceeded to the spider nightmare. We wiped in this phase, and when we ran back in all the spiders were agroed to the begging of the instance. Based off this, I must say the encounter is extremely bugged. We were unable to restart the encounter and kept wiping. Eventually we gather together, ran back into the spider room, found all the spiders to not be there and only the goblin boss was there. We attacked him, the spiders re-spawned, and everything went as it was supposed to. Everything went smoothly until we killed the machine boss, and then let Emma die. As a result, we ran back, the nightmare had "ended" and we were unable to start the fight again. Luckily for us, when we ran back to the ship, Vanessa was just chilling and we killed her. We skipped the nightmare phase completely, so this is a really awesome fight but really bugged.
Was really, really, #$%^ing stupid.
i did this fight on 12/29/10, we encountered a bug, definitely to our advantage. We just got done killing the robot guy in the dream phase. During that we had someone die (From the beams). We rezzed him, he had a timer on him. Then bam our debuff went, and killed us all. He rezzed us, we went to the top of the boat thinking we had to restart, because we did not finish the gauntlet w/ the saving family thing, We found the vancleef chick up there. We killed her and got the achieve. I hope this helps, maybe this is not even a bug. But we were happy.
Now we just need a Shaman to see if (s)he can use the ropes in Wolf-form.. LOL
Did this fight today with a group and during the Ripsnarl nightmare the tank didn't stop to kill all the worgen in the first group. The other two NPCs didn't spawn and when the remaining worgen was kited up the ramp he bugged out and evaded. We tried to reset the nightmare by porting out and porting back in the instance but he stayed bugged out and we had to end the run prematurely because we couldn't finish the nightmare and fight Vanessa.
Gets my vote for most amazing fight all expansion, maybe all game.
Went into this blindly in a PuG, got a vague explanation of the tactics and what I got was a full blown AWESOME few minutes of my life. They could end Cataclysm with a raid version of this and it'd be worth the money alone.
Yeah, that's right. Screw you Deathwing, get back in your hole.
I have a feeling that she somehow faked her suicide, and that it will be another "setback."
Note to holy paladins:
The ropes are the perfect oppotunity to use divine plea.
You don't need to (and indeed, can't) heal while on them and it still ticks, giving you that precious mana.
You will encounter Vanessa VanCleef several times before battling her in The Deadmines. Here is a summary of the events she is part of and excerpts from texts and quest logs where her name is mentioned.
WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SEVERAL SPOILERS!
The first short glimpse of Vanessa VanCleef can be caught during the cutscene at the end of
A Vision of the Past
. The cutscene takes place in Ironclad Cove inside the classic
where the Defias Kingpin
is killed by Alliance forces.
At the very end a young Vanessa VanCleef will run up to her fathers body, kneeling before it saying:
Vanessa VanCleef says: Daddy...
Later, accepting the quest
Rise of the Brotherhood
Marshal Gryan Stoutmantle
in Westfall unfolds a series of events where much of the history behind Westfall, The Deadmines and the VanCleef family is uncovered.
An excerpt from the quest log reads:
I had no idea that VanCleef had a daughter, <name>. If there was one thing that man was exceptionally skilled at, it was keeping secrets.
How tragic. Poor thing witnessed a horrible act. Had I only known.
What was that? Did you hear something? It seems as if the gnolls are pulling back... where are my guards?
While accepting the quest, you will simultaneously trigger an event where the following dialogue takes place:
Marshal Gryan Stoutmantle says: I don't like this, <name>. Stay alert!
Hope Saldean says: You bastards will burn for what you did.
Vanessa VanCleef yells: RISE UP BROTHERHOOD! THE DAWNING DAY IS UPON US!
Vanessa VanCleef says: Tie them up.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Admiral, your hat.
Vanessa VanCleef says: And you, <name>. I will spare your life. You have done much to help our case, albeit unwittingly, but the next time we meet it will be as enemies.
Lieutenant Horatio Laine says: Just tell me one thing, Vanessa.
Lieutenant Horatio Laine says: Why'd you have the Furlbrows killed?
Vanessa VanCleef says: I had no choice, lieutenant. They recognized me. The only people in the world who even knew I existed, recognized my face from when I was an infant.
Vanessa VanCleef says: I took no pleasure in their deaths.
Vanessa VanCleef yells: Leave nothing but ashes in your wake, brothers! Burn Sentinel Hill to the ground!
Marshal Gryan Stoutmantle says: <name>, get to Stormwind. Tell King Wrynn everything. EVERYTHING! GO NOW
The end of the event Sentinel Hill will burn at the hands of Vanessa VanCleef, and you must hurry to Stormwind to warn King Varian Wrynn about Vanessa VanCleef, to which he replies:
I will deploy a battalion of soldiers to Westfall at once! With the Defias Brotherhood reborn, an old threat to the kingdom is renewed.
You are now able to accept the quest
Return to Sentinel Hill
King Varian Wrynn
. An excerpt from the quest log reads:
The Defias Brotherhood are not a force to be taken lightly, <name>. What you witnessed was the brith of a ruthless organization of criminals that will stop at nothing to see Stormwind turned to rubble.
I need you to return to Sentinel Hill and let Gryan know that I am sending him troops. I hope it's not too late.
Upon your return to Sentinel Hill the small town has changed. The town is now on fire and under attack by The Defias Brotherhood, and Vanessa VanCleef is long gone.
Foe Reaper 5000 Is scared of Mario games!
She's hot i just had to say it
Do not take the rope more than once per swing as intended
(no more than three in total). If there is an empty rope after you return (usually caused by a dead member), do not grab it no matter how tempting it may be.
have a chance of being used on the swinger while they are in range and above the lower floor of the ship, causing Vanessa to fall down onto said floor. Following this, she will determine that the swinger is evading, and fully recover her HP. If she is still stepping, she does so to another member on the ship and resumes the fight.
Although there will not be more than three rope phases, be prepared for a wipe or an extended fight in the worst cases; a possible reset if she cannot return to the deck and refuses to take the path.
Just an FYI for people doing this fight in patch 4.0.6: They have removed the last rope jump, BUT if you are standing near her when she dies, you will take an insane amount of damage, and most likely die, like I did on my rogue today.
She stays alive for several seconds after running out of health, so the simple solution is to run away at that point.
Now that I think about it, it would be kinda nice if there were an easy way to get out of range before she blows up. Maybe...I've got it! A rope swing! Oh wait...
I was actually hoping for a Feat of Strength for killing Edwin VanCleef and Vanessa. *sigh*
Before 4.0.6, you could jump right down over the side in the beginning of the first Nightmare, reaching Glubtok before any fires even spawned.
Do not not not not
do that now - as soon as you land, fires will have already spawned, and you will die a horrible burning death.
As of 4.0.6, when she reaches 1%, instead of making you swing off the ropes a final time she says something along the lines of "I'm taking you all with me!", drops a powder keg and kills everyone who's within about a 10-yard range.
Was a nice surprise, it killed everyone but me since I ran away when she said that!
If you wipe to Vanessa's bomb at the end, do NOT port to the ship. The ship portal is set on fire and will kill you instantly.
One way of dealing with the bomb at the end is jumping over the side of the ship, where the ropes used to be for the third swing, and landing at the lower deck. There is a fire free area down there, where you can land safely and survive the explosion.
While I have only tried this once, I intend for this to be my way of dealing with this mechanic for future encounters. This should give you the needed range.
If Vanessa dies right at the side of the ship, it can be improved with another jump into the water or running across the bridge on that side of the ship, if more range is required.
As of the last patch it seems the fire now does pop immediately. It's no longer to take the shortcut by jumping towards the first boss from the top.
Also, it's not possible to exploit the running part by letting the npc die (which used to make you pop in front of Vancleef afair).
This boss instantly kill me. Like one shot one kill. I dont understand anything.
The second nightmare may or may not be a reference to a brief meme on the Rogue forums where spiders were (jokingly) blamed for breaking Vanish. Since nobody seems to remember it, it's probably just a coincidence.
OH GOD SPIDERS /\/\(';..;')/\/\
Vanessa: You didn't honestly think I would only plant one set of explosives, do you?
Me: I didn't honestly think you would provide ropes for us to get away from said explosives, either.
Just remember when the time comes to jump off the ship: Cool people don't look at explosions.
Clearly Vanessa has spent some time farming MC for two of these
Fun fact for Combat Rogues during her
... Even though she will parry 100% of your attacks, you can flip on Blade Flurry and wail away at the adds while standing next to her. The BF proc ignores her Deflection and will continue to damage her as usual.
I guess most of Female Human Rogues wanna be Vanessa while RolePlaying, including me.
So, I've decided to help those by putting up a full list of Vanessa's Gear.
Please keep in mind that Original Belt and Gloves do not exist as an available items.
Red Defias Mask
Chest *Might not be the original one but its closest i could find* -
Tabard of Flame
Gloves *Original version doesn't exist* -
Belt *Original version doesn't exist* -
Black Featherlight Boots
Dagger Main-Hand -
Dagger Off-Hand -
Vanessa uses two Perdition's Blades but since they're unique it is NOT possible for an player, so instead of two Perdition's Blades, I recommend you this one -
enchanted with Fiery Weapon or something.
It might take you some time but it is worth it if you're true Roleplayer =P
In the end your character will look like this if you've collected all items that I've listed -
Male Characters with this gear will get totally different result as the models it self are made only for FEMALE characters. So do not freak out and think that Im a retard when Model Viewer opens automatically on Male =P
EDIT: Now with Transmogrification, you can have 2x Perdition's Blade :)
As of 4.2, she will have voice acting.
Official 4.2 Patch Notes:
Vanessa VanCleef (Heroic difficulty) now has a sweet, sweet voice to accompany her dialog.
I'm pretty I'm going to run this the first day it hits just to hear this, as well as a lot of us.
I've been looking for a video all day, but no luck so far. I'm really curious about what she sounds like.
Edit: This was meant as a reply to Ambellina, no idea why it ended up down here.
deadmines is one of the best dungeons i liked it better before when you fought Edwin VanCleef
coment on marexns i think the chest piece is a tailors chest since my tailor is really high level
The audios are already out :
Your all forgetting the important part! SHE KILLED OLD BLANCHY!
Killing her makes me feel bad... :(
Even if she's evil, it's just not the same as wiping out murloc families.
Her new voice actress sounds like
, though as of this writing she's not credited.
...Honestly, when I first heard her voice, my entire group agreed that she sounded like a tween. Not what you expect out of a criminal mastermind that spun circles around you in Westfall and planned her revenge for years.
Not sure if fixed or not, but you can unlock the door to the vessel if you're a rogue, BS, or engineer, making the fight faster, which can help with Vigorous Vancleef Vindicator.
A note for paladins, you can bubble through the electricity and place Hand of Protection on someone as they walk through as well.
Since noone's mentioned this, an important piece of information, I will. During Helix's Nightmare, the spiders grow in strength, and literal size, when they take damage. This means, don't just avoid them, stop using any aoe what-so-ever! Be careful of any spell tht you may have that you've got that hits anything other than Helix! Whilst this slows dps against the boss it ensures that you will survive long enough to dps the boss in the first place.
Why is this downrated? It's true!
Does anyone know what waist piece Vanessa wears, i cant seem to find a copy. Also, I cant see to find a similar tunic any ideas?
Well lets see...
Both of them are heroes of their race, tucked deep into combat, warfare and conflict, and both of them... have a bare chest.
No, Mike, you're totally right. It's completely valid to wear thigh-high boots and leather stockings, but leave the entirety of the hip and thigh, and by extension the femoral artery, exposed. That's a completely legitimate outfit to wear for vigorous combat. We're just perverts, there's no way Blizzard intended that character, or the others mentioned, to appear sexualized in any way.
Oh not that combat efficiency arguement again... I didn't even say anything about that.
And what I tried to say through my comment, is that the deduction of her being a %^&* is an over-exaggerated opinion judged by how she appears, not that she didn't appear sexual at all.
Can anyone give the flavor text of what Vanessa says about the other bosses in the dungeon? I found it rather interesting and would like to read them again. :3
Quote : "I was never good at hand-to-hand combat"
Cool story sistah...
Check out the transmogrification guide for Vanessa Vancleef
How does one get the voice files for her?
the &*!@# killed Blanchy... now she must suffer...
You never need to click any of the ropes, just stand right near the edge :P
Vanessa: "You didn't honestly think I would only plant ONE set of explosives, did you?"
You just blew up the ship, how can there be more explosives?
This is one of my favourite bosses because of its story plot. In old wow you had quests about vannessa (who hadn't appeared yet)
What items for Transmog? and anyone else /whistle when you see her XD
"Vanessa" means "butterfly" in some elf language :3
As I couldn't find any similar leather legs for my rouge, I manged to find a pair of legs called Warbear Woollies.
They require a Leather working skill of at least 285, to purchase the recipe you require friendly status with The Timbermaw Hold and it's sold by Meilosh located in Felwood.
The item is also "Binds When Equipped" so you should check out Auction House for it.
Look for an item called Ceremonial Leather Loincloth on the Auction House, same model as Warbear Woollies.
Non of them look the same as Vanessa's, but they're just as revealing ^^
(The links didn't work out as I expected, sorry)
A dude in my party today fell down when going for the ropes. When the rest of us swung back, Vanessa just ran off and disappeared, which of course reset the encounter. Bug or intended? Not sure.
In the flash back it looked like she was maybe a 10 year old girl.
Which means a bunch of heavily armed "heroes" are doing all of this to murder a 15 year old girl.
Anyone else wish she dropped her tabard? I know I do. Could just be called "Tabard of VanCleef", or "Vanessa's Tabard".
Vanessa owns a pair of these classic
. Pretty sweet to see a Awesome boss use them.
I'm kinda surprised a lore junky didn't mention that, keeping with the game timeline, etc., Vanessa can't be more than 13 or 14 years-old when you kill her in the heroic version. They get mean fast sometimes, don't they?
Note to anyone overleveled and coming here to farm for Chaos Orbs: Don't kill her too quickly. If you kill her before she hops back down to the ground, her corpse will be too high up to grab the loot.
Even tough she was my enemy, I feel truly sorry if not highly remorseful for having to kill her, its not like I wanted to! Sometimes you just end up the villain for no reason at all, well except when Blizzard decides to make you, heck I even ended up praying for her!
A new strategy has emerged for defeating this boss:
before the encounter to reduce her to a puddle of tears.
I greatly regret killing her, I offered a prayer after her demise, I'm glad she is still alive! :D
