Halion the Twilight Destroyer is the new boss added in patch 3.3.5; he will be the primary encounter along with
three
mini
-
encounters
that must be completed prior to him.
Unlike Obsidian Sanctum, there are no progressive hard modes from leaving up some or all of the minibosses. The loot which drops will contain of
iLvl 258 (10man Normal)
and
iLvl 271 (25man Normal).
--lolore--
The point for this new (or some may say,
filler
) raid, is to start the story line of Cataclysm.
Halion is leading a powerful war party of the Black Dragonflight, and has launched an assault on the Ruby Sanctum beneath Wyrmrest Temple. By destroying the sanctum, the Black Dragonflight can crush those who would stand in the way of their masters reemergence (Deathwing) into Azeroth and to shatter the wyrmrest Accord.

From wowwiki:
Halion has three phases, in which the raid must switch between the physical realm and the shadow realm.
Phase 1
A few seconds after being engaged, Halion summons a wall of flame in a circle around him, closing off any players not in the stage.
Halion has a frontal cone breath attack. Unlike most dragon bosses, he does not have a tail swipe or cleave. He also summons fireballs, which fall from the sky and hit a large area with fire damage, leaving a patch of flame where it hit, as well as four flames going in the four directions out of the fire patch. The location where the fireball will hit is indicated by a hellfire graphic. Any player under it must move out before the fireball hits. All players must move away from the flames that spread from the patch.
He also puts a debuff on random players called Mark of Combustion. When the debuff ends or when it is removed, a patch forms under the player's feet that deals damage to players in it. Players afflicted have to move to the edge of the stage then get the debuff removed, before running back to the raid. This phase ends when halion reaches 75%.
Phase 2
Halion shifts to the shadow realm, and summons a portal which players can use to enter as well. In the shadow realm, Halion still has his breath and Mark of Combustion, but they do shadow damage instead of fire damage. Also, two shadow orbs circle around the edges of the stage. Every once in a while, a death beam will come out of the two, connecting them and dealing enough damage to instantly kill you to any player in the beam. This phase ends at 50%.
Phase 3
Haslion exists in both realms, and the raid must split into two; one fights him in the shadow realm, and the other fights him in the physical realm. Dps needs to be just about equal on both, or the side with less dps will have their Halion healing himself and dealing more damage, as he is pushed further into that realm. Other than that, the fight continues as in phases 1 and 2.

Seems like a well thought out fight. I like the combustion mechanic - as I'm not a raider it may exist in other raids to some degree, but I like fights when the DPS have to think, not just tanks and healers.

Death Knight tanks specced with
Vampiric Blood
must be very cautious about using it around Halion, the Twilight Destroyer. Activating it will cause him to immediately enrage, thus increasing the likelihood that he will rip you limb from limb and/or question your taste in literature.
(Also, avoid using a
pet grooming kit
on your
Vampiric Batling

He looks more like a mature dragon of the chronomatic dragonflight than the twilight drakes. If I remember correctly they were pink and used fire attacks, while twilight drakes used shadow and fire.
Just my 2 cents.

Maybe I am missing something here....but is this not considered a Cataclysm raid? I thought that they (Blizz) decided that 10 and 25 would drop the same ilevel of loot......or is that plan not applicative to the "transition" content we can expect? Is this the last "WotLK" raid and everything after will be dropping the equivalent of the 25 man loot listed here? Just wondering why the conflicting info.....

Seems to draw some of the encounter mechanics from Sunwell's Kalecgos. Two versions of the boss that need to be killed at a similar rate, and a debuff that needs to be dispelled at a very controlled rate. Thank goodness it can be dispelled
as well as
decursed this time around... (mages and druids had a ball of a time if they were limited in the Sunwell encounter.)
The shadow orbs should be a nice twist, though =)

Things that enrage Halion, The Twilight Destoryer, DON'T DO THIS:
Do not play as a Worgen in their worgen form when fighting Halion.
Do not use Vampiric Blood when fighting Halion.
Do not use Vampiric Batling, especialy when clean.
Do not use Vampiric Handscyths
Do not use a wolf pet, he will mistake it as a worgen.
Do not still have the Vampire form from Blood Queen Lan'thal.
Do not bring any of the Bosses or mobs from Crimson Hall to Halion.
If anyone in your group does one of these, it may cause burning or instant death. If either occur contact a doctor.

Firey Combustion and Mark of Consumption can be placed on melee players.
Also, to clarify it, the Twilight Cutter/Shadow Pulsars center with the room as it's axis, not with Halion. Make sure your tank dosen't decide it's a good idea to pull Halion to the edges of the room >.<

A few clarifications and personal observations from having done RS10 today.
2 tanks are required for the encounters on 10 man, with preferably 3 healers. The encounter is by no means simple or easy, but it is certainly refreshing from the months of ICC10/25.
TRASH
For the most part, trash is inconsequential except for the two patrolling packs with the
Charscale Commander
(identified by the banner he has). His ability
Rallying Shout
is extremely deadly and the preferred method of dealing with the packs containing the Charscale Commander would be for one tank to Taunt the Commander (quickly, as he tends to use Rallying Shout fairly soon after being engaged) and tank him away from the rest of the mobs, with the Commander being the first priority to kill.
MINI-BOSSES
The three mini-bosses must be defeated to enable Halion. Either
Baltharus
or
Saviana
can be engaged first, while both must be downed to be able to reach
Zarithrian
.
Baltharus is fairly simple. He has a
knock-back
as well as a
whirlwind
which can be partially mitigated by having melee DPS break out of melee range for a brief period. He also also has an ability called
Enervating Brand
which doesn't require any particular attention, however when Baltharus has ~20 stacks of
Siphoned Might
the MT ought to use an appropriate cooldown. At 50% he creates a clone of himself (at 100% health) which should be picked up by the OT and more-or-less ignored by the DPS as it despawns when (the real) Baltharus is defeated.
Saviana may be partially difficult depending on your group composition. She has an obligatory
Flame Breath
and so the tank should face her towards the little body of water where she is at. She
Enrages
periodically which causes
Fire Nova
(which has a 100 yard range and so cannot be out-ranged) at 2 sec intervals. If a Hunter or Rogue is present, the Enrage (and the Fire Nova casts) may be simply tranquilised away, however if neither are present it becomes quite a bit more difficult to manage and it is advised for the tanks and healers to use a cooldown. She also flies into the air above the pool of water occassionally and targets two players with
Conflagration
(indicated by the Hunter's Mark above their heads) which does Fire damage as well as disorients them for 3 sec, and this effect will chain to others nearby (functions identically to Vile Gas during Festergut). When she lifts up into the air, all players should spread themselves out to avoid Conflagration chaining.
Zarithrian is available once Saviana and Baltharus have been defeated. He should be tanked where he stands with all other players stacking behind him. He applies a
Sunder Armour
effect to the current tank and Taunt exchanges should be done every 3-4 stacks. The OT in the mean time, should be picking up and focusing on the two adds which spawn during the fight (one add will enter the platform from each of the two entrances). They are relatively difficult to bunch up given that they tend to sit there and use ranged abilities, however the stacking behind Zarithrian should offset that. The adds have an AoE that can/should be interrupted (although it honestly doesn't hit particularly hard) and should be DPSed to remove them quickly, after which the DPS should continue on with Zarithrian. Edit: Zarithrian also does a periodic
Intimidating Roar
(it doesn't send players scattering like a Fear, but they instead remain stationary and it does affect the current tank) during which he tends to beat on a nearby DPS so it is advisable to Fear Ward/Tremor Totem the Intimidating Roar whenever possible.
After Zarithrian is defeated, Halion will spawn in the centre of Ruby Sanctum.
HALION THE TWILIGHT DESTROYER
The encounter article for
Halion
is quite detailed so I won't elaborate too much on the encounter. A few clarifications though, during Phase 2 Halion won't actually be present in the Physical realm so it's preferable to have all healers, DPS and the Twilight realm tank to use the portal with the Physical realm tank remaining behind ready to pick up Halion during Phase 3. For splitting up healers during Phase 3 my group found it more beneficial to put 2 of the 3 healers in the Twilight realm due to
Dark Shroud
with most of the damage in the Physical realm being avoidable. Also when Phase 2 is about to begin and the portal to the Twilight realm becomes active, the tank should be the first to go in as the Twilight Halion will immediately aggro (it may be advisable for the Twilight tank to use a cooldown after phasing as the healers may not have taken the portal yet).
In dealing either with
Soul Consumption
or
Fiery Combustion
, my group found the best course of action to deal with this was to have melee immediately run across to the other side of Halion away from the raid (we had the raid stay on the right flank of Halion for the encounter), immediately have the Consumption/Combustion dispelled and drop the AoE and reposition themselves as before. Ranged DPS and healers would naturally be spread adequately across the encounter area on the right side of Halion, with the Consumption/Combustion being dispelled immediately. We found it at times better for the ranged players to drop their AoE at the same area (even if a Combustion/Consumption) is already present to cause them to overlap and leave more room overall for players to move.

A tip for the corporeal realm:
We had him tanked right up against the edge of the circle, with ranged spread out in the middle. And either he favors people at range from him, or he favors people closer to the middle, because we never had a meteor strike someone in melee range once. The X shaped fire quite happily goes into the melee, though.
A tip for the Twilight realm:
We had Halion being tanked up against an edge of the circle. That means, at any given time, melee can move in front of him, behind him, or further toward the center. In front of, and behind, are generally not good ideas because of basic dragon mechanics (tail swipe and breath). When the Twilight Cutter starts up, melee might have to move, depending on how Halion is positioned compared to the orbs. Moving back pushes them into tail swipe, which often stuns long enough for the cutter to mow you down, and moving forward gets them breathed on. Because of this, you really don't want to drop Consumption between Halion and the center of the circle, since all your melee are going to be running that direction to avoid getting one shot by various things. Dropping Consumption behind Halion, and a bit away from the tail (so you don't get swiped while you're dropping it) would probably be the most useful place, or else in the exact center of the circle (since the cutter will ALWAYS be affecting the exact center, if it's up).
Also, although Consumption/Combustion can be removed just as well by remove curse or remove magic, they are, for all other purposes, magic effects. If you're, say, a resto shaman who doesn't bother to show magic effects on your UI, because you can't normally dispel them, you'll want to change that for this fight. Your Cleanse spirit will remove this magic effect. Same goes for mages/boomkins.
Edit: But after watching the Tankspot video, I think we were wrong to tank Halion at the edge in the Twilight Realm. I think we were right to have him against the edge in the corporeal realm, however.

It should be stated that Corporeality differs for both groups - it means when group in twilight realm has 40%, group in physical realm got 60%.
So in this example Twilight realm group slow downs with dps.
So it's safe to say:
- if you see Corporeality below 50%, slow down with dps.
- if you see Corporeality above 50%, speed up with dps

Not sure if this has been mentioned but the orbs in the twilight realm move in a clockwise direction.
Although in phase 2 he is not in the physical world and therefor you could move all your healers into the twilight world I feel you should keep one out with the tank for phase 3. Reason being that if the orbs are up in the twilight world when he hits 50% it can take a while to get to the portal and in the meantime there is no healer on the tank in the physical world.

We attempted both 10 and 25 RS last night and ran into a problem. Neither of our tanks could see the orbs circling around in the Twilight Realm. We tried everything we could think of with their video settings; turning them all the way up, all the way down, matching them to others who could see the orbs, etc. Nothing helped, the orbs remained invisible to the tanks.
Anyone have any idea if this is a bug or how to fix it? Thanks.

According to the description of Twilight Precision, Halion's chance to hit is increased by 5%. That means extra 125 defense skill on top of 540 is required for tanks to reach crit immunity, for a total of 665.
Nothing further from the truth. Twilight Precision only reduces his target's dodge chance by 20% and chance to be missed by 5%. This diminishes the effect of "reduces chance to be hit" (miss) mechanichs (
Frigid Dreadplate
and the effect of defense) but does not affect the boss'es critical strike chance. This is only dependant on the level difference, which is, as we know, 3 (bosses act like level 83 mobs), thus the critical chance is (and will remain) 5.6%. You don't need extra defense to be crit immune, the regular 540 is enough, the RNG will just be less forgiving.
As a sidenote, Agalloch, you should crunch some numbers before stating such things. To reach 665 defense, you would require 1304 defense rating, which is no doubt impossible with the current gear available, even if you would gem and enchant everything with defense. Don't be surprised if you get downranked.

Does this boss despawn after a few days?
Was recently invited into a group with someone who was on Halion and walked into the instance to get saved and start researching the boss. The boss was not there and the original saved said he couldn't see him either. Haven't found any 'summoning' instruction either.
I have also not completed the 'attunement' quest, as the npc you turn the quest into despawns after a soft reset. Does this phase the instance so that if you haven't turned it in, you can not see Halion?
or is this a bug?

Is the loot table complete yet? Seems weird that they would put tank boots in both 10 and 25, and nothing else for tanks (except for a questionable trinket - RNG is exactly what we need when we're at low health).
Also, is there a way to zoom even further out so you can actually see both orbs at the same time? Because the shield limits camera movement forcing you to turn sideways. Not a big deal but I like actually looking at the stuff I'm tanking.

I noticed that in the Twilight realm, Halion's Twilight Cutter seems to travel
120 degrees
, covering 2/3 of the arena (ie,
each ball travels for one third of the circle
) before disappearing. On normal this means you can have rather minimal movement and still be safe in either of two 60 degree slices of the room (ie, the
two sixths of the room that will not be cut
) unfortunately, if you are in these zones before the cutter activates this is probably in range of his breath and tail swipe so you won't be saving yourself dps time.
That being said, I hope this helps some people get their bearings better and lets them realize they don't need to run the whole twilight cutter duration. On heroic, this obviously won't work due to the overlap of the 2nd beam.
edit: added emphasis

I haven't seen any info about heroic mode yet. I just watched a video on Youtube just to see what the differences were. Besides obvious damage and health increases, his the initial impact of his Meteor Strike ability will one shot you if it hits you.
In the Twilight realm, there are four Shadow Pulsars circling 90 degrees around the fighting area and the void zone left by Soul Consumption has a slowing effect.
In phase three, void zones carry over between realms, meaning players in the physical realm can be affected by Soul Consumption void zones and vice-versa. Please feel free to correct or add more information to this.

I just today sat down and wrote this. Perhaps someone will find it useful.
Guide to Heroic Halion-25
Raid Comp:
Three tanks
15-16 DPS
6-7 healers
The raid must include at least one hunter and rogue, and at least two classes that possess major external tank cooldowns such as
Hand of Sacrifice
,
Divine Guardian
, or
Guardian Spirit
.
A guild attempting heroic
Halion
-25 must already have nearly complete gear and experience from heroic ICC-25 to have any chance of success. Heroic
Halion
-25 is substantially more difficult than heroic
Sindragosa
-25, but not as difficult as heroic
Lich King
-25.
Differences between normal and heroic
:
Halion
hits EXTREMELY hard on 25-man heroic. He will melee a tank in full heroic ICC gear for 30-40k a swing. His
Cleave
and
Flame Breath
also hit hard and will absolutely oneshot anyone who is not a tank. Parry haste is definitely enabled; melee getting parried will probably kill the tank instantly as two 35k swings back to back is unhealable. Tanks should have as much expertise as they can get without sacrificing EH.
Meteor Strike
now spawns one large
Living Inferno
and eight small
Living Embers
in addition to its normal effect. The
Living Inferno
applies a
stacking buff
to all
Living Embers
within 15 yards that increases their total health and damage done. This buff stacks very rapidly and too many stacks will cause the embers to overwhelm the raid. Therefore, the encounter requires three tanks on heroic - two MTs for
Halion
himself (one in the Twilight Realm, one outside) and a third tank for the adds. On heroic,
Meteor Strike
will not oneshot a tank, but it will absolutely oneshot anything else.
There are not two but four
Shadow Orbs
on heroic, generating an additional
Twilight Cutter
; this divides the interior realm into not two but four quadrants on heroic.
Twilight Cutters
hit harder - about 30k a tick. To touch a Cutter is instant death.
On heroic,
Halion
has an eight-minute
enrage
timer. The
enrage
will cause him to absolutely oneshot the tank then
Cleave
and
Flame Breath
the entire raid. This
enrage
cannot be managed by kiting or chain taunting; if he enrages the raid will be wiped out in no more than a few seconds. The
enrage
is tight enough that if more than a couple DPS die and cannot be
battle-rezzed
, it is essentially a wipe.
As mentioned above, the damage zones created by the dispelling of
Fiery Combustion
and
Soul Consumption
now persist through realms.
Soul Consumption
now
grips in
anyone within 12 yards of the player when dispelled; conversely
Fiery Combustion
now
knocks away
anyone who stands within 12 yards of the player when he is dispelled.
Consumption
now applies a snare while within the radius of the damage zone.
Strategy:
Phase One:
Upon pull, the MT should pull
Halion
, back him up slightly and turn him 45 degrees so the raid can get to his side. The entire raid should stack up as close as possible on his right rear leg. Players move out for
Fiery Combustion
as on normal. When
Meteor Strike
is being cast and the animation appears on the ground, all players must immediately move to the other side of the boss.
Because of the tight
enrage
it is vital that players not die when moving across the boss. Halion's
Cleave
and
Flame Breath
breath will always oneshot a non-tank if they connect; therefore players should move directly across his lower midsection, through his back legs. Halion's
Tail Lash
is NOT a oneshot; although it can and should be avoided, being tail swiped is far preferable to being cleaved. Note that
BoPs
make the target immune to
Tail Lash
.
When adds come, a hunter must immediately misdirect the
Living Inferno
to the MT.
Living Infernoes
are NOT tauntable, therefore it is extremely difficult for a MT to pick it up unassisted, and an aggro pull will likely be a raid-wiping event. Also note that a rogue's Tricks are not suitable for
Living Inferno
pickup. Rogues should if possible
Fan of Knives
/
Tricks
the eight
Living Embers
to the add tank, who should be stacked up directly on the raid.
The
Living Embers
do not oneshot DPS, although aggro on many will kill a non-tank. However, if they are too close to the
Living Inferno
,
the increase in their health
will soak up too much DPS. Unlike the
Living Inferno
, they are tauntable, and the add tank must be vigilant to make sure that any that get on the MT due to incidental AoE are quickly taunted back.
Phase Two:
To make the
enrage
timer, the boss must be pushed into P2 with no more than two
Meteor Strikes
.
Halion
will become active inside the Twilight Realm as soon as any individual enters and performs any action. This includes buffing, HoTs, shields, heals, and of course attacking
Halion
himself. The MT for Twilight side in P3 should enter first, followed by the rest of the raid one second later. As in P1, the tank should on pull adjust
Halion's
positioning slightly, backing him up then turning him so the raid can stack up on his side.
Halion
should be held stationary until he is about to activate the
Twilight Cutters
. A few seconds before he does so, the tank should begin turning him on his center, moving along the edge of his hitbox taking care to keep him stationary, and the raid should follow the tank's concentric motion. It is vital that the tank communicate with the raid as to his beginning and ending the turning movement. Again, due to the sharp enrage, no one can die in P2; getting hit by cutters - ever - is unacceptable.
Outside should remain one or two healers, two tanks, and perhaps a hunter for P3 to ensure smooth pickup. The
Living Embers
from P1 do not have a large amount of health nor do they hit particularly hard; therefore the second wave of
Embers
from P1 should NOT be AoE'd, and instead left for the healers and tanks to finish off while the majority of the raid is inside the Twilight Realm in P2.
It is vital that debuffs be dragged as far out of the raid and as close to the edge of the area as quickly as possible as they affect both realms. A debuff dropped too close to the center, or dispelled too late, will destroy the raid on the other side. Reaction time is key.
Phase Three:
P3 is substantially the same as on normal: about half the raid returns to the normal realm and together with the twilight realm team, finishes him off. P3 on heroic is characterized mostly by
Halion's
incredible damage output and capacity to take a full BiS tank 100-0 in moments - in P3, the number of healers each tank has to keep him alive through
Halion's
onslaught is halved.
Healers and even offspec healing classes must pre-heal the normal realm MT as soon as the transition begins. The normal realm MT must immediately pick
Halion
up and position appropriately; the rest of the raid should stand a decent distance away, forming a roughly 60 degree angle around the boss, so the entire raid cannot get hit by
Tail Lash
, nor obstruct the tank's movement.
Therefore, unnecessary healing must be kept to a minimum. DPS must never stand in fire nor get melee'd by adds as that will overburden healers who must continuously chain-cast heals on the tanks. Tanks must be very aggressive in picking up adds and ensuring the
Embers
are kept away from the
Infernos
. Add tanks that are engineers will find
Saronite Bombs
immensely useful for frontload.
During all periods of mobility -
Twilight Cutters
and
Meteor Strikes
- cooldowns must be active on the tanks to prevent them from dying while healers are moving. In addition,
Aura Mastery
should be activated reactively whenever
Halion
begins casting a
Flame Breath
during a period of mobility. Note that
Halion's
breath is
fire-school
on the normal side and
shadow-school
in the twilight realm, and auras do not extend across realms; therefore both sides should if possible have independent
Armor
auras and
fire
and
shadow
auras should be active in the appropriate realms.
It is not recommended to use the portal after P3 has begun, as lag and mobility make reaching the other side alive an uncertain proposition given
Halion's
cleave
,
breath
and
tail swipe
. In general, never take the portal unless absolutely necessary. If a raid member must take the portal he should be
BoP'd
before entering.
P3 is a survival battle, but high DPS must be maintained due to the sharp
enrage
. DPS on
Halion's
normal side should focus the
Living Inferno
first, because of its capacity to kill the MT by KO'ing him after a swing and special from
Halion's
, and the adds should be DPS'd only after the add tank has solid aggro, to minimize unnecessary healing.
Although
Corporeality
is in principle self-correcting, in practice the raid must be balanced properly before P3 begins to ensure it remains as close as possible to baseline on both sides, as the raid cannot afford to stop DPS for more than short peroids, nor can
Corporeality
be allowed to deviate more than 5-10% on either side lest the tank die during the correction or mobility.
Fundamental challenges of the encounter:
The raid must learn to move across
Halion
in the normal realm and around him in the Twilight realm without ever dying.
Healers must learn to keep the MTs up through the enormous and often highly sporadic damage they take.
Tanks must learn to position
Halion
correctly and pick up adds efficiently.
DPS must learn to modulate their DPS and switch appropriately between the
Living Inferno
,
Halion
, and the
Living Embers
- in that order.
The raid as a whole must be properly divided between the normal and Twilight realms, and individuals must be assigned to
Misdirect
,
Tricks
, and rotate tank cooldowns at the appropriate time.
Class Advice:
Warrior: Superior add tank due to excellent frontload. As DPS, be sure to hold AoE while adds are spawning, especially during P3; after add tank has aggro, make sure to AoE them while continuing to attack
Halion
.
Rogue: Be sure to
Tricks
/
Fan of Knives
Living Embers
to the add tank whenever possible. Avoid getting parried at all costs as a parry-hasted swing is very likely to kill the tank as
Halion's
normal melee is about 50% a tank's total health.
Hunter: Manage cooldowns to ensure that an
Misdirect
is always available for a
Living Inferno
spawn. Keybind a macro to target the inferno and misdirect it to the MT, as it will be necessary to do this even when moving out for
Combustion
/
Disengage
away with debuffs.
Shaman:
Magma Totem
is excellent for Living Embers and should be used liberally.
Fire Elemental totem
should be used in P1 in conjunction with
Heroism
/
Bloodlust
on pull.
Grounding Totem
is NO LONGER effective against
Combustion
.
Mage:
Blink
should be used liberally to move out with
Combustion
/
Consumption
, and to cross
Halion's
body and cutters without risk. Remember that CnC are both curses and magic; mages should be able to move easily to the edge of the area and self-decurse, then blink back to the center. Watch AoE when adds have spawned; mages should focus more on
Halion
and the
Living Inferno
than the embers.
Warlock: Drop a
Demonic Circle
on one side of
Halion
, and return to it after each
Meteor Strike
on the opposing side and after having CnC removed.
Paladin: It is imperative all paladins use every raid cooldown and aura to maximum effect.
DS
/
HSac
and
AM
cooldowns should be communicated with the healers and other paladins. Seal-weave between
SoCom
and
SoV
as appropriate. Although
Divine Shield
is effective against
Twilight Cutters
, it should be saved to use in conjunction with
HSac
.
Hand of Freedom
is effective against the snare effect of
Soul Consumption
. Paladins can and should self-dispel CnC as appropriate. A prot paladin has by far the
strongest mitigation
of any add tank, and the best sustained threat, but the worst frontload, lacking
Swipe
,
Shockwave
,
Thunderclap
, or
Blood Boil
.
Priest: Communicate with paladins regarding raid CDs. Manage AoE carefully and
Fade
as appropriate.
Death Knight: Use
AMS
wisely. Never use
Army of the Dead
as it will cause the adds to become uncontrollable and migrate to the
Living Inferno
. AoE adds after tank has initial aggro. DPS DKs that use their defensive cooldowns carefully can afford a significantly greater amount of aggro from adds. It is most helpful for DKs to
Death Grip
adds off the MT to the add tank. A DK is not a strong add tank, as they are unable to block.
Druid:
Rebirth
must be used cautiously and effectively.
Innervates
must be used to maximum effect on healers during P3. Druids can and should
self-decurse
and power-shift out of the snare effect of
Consumption
. Also note that since the entire encounter is "outdoors",
Travel Form
is fully effective. As with DKs, a druid is a relatively strong MT but not recommended as an add tank due to inability to block.
Feel free to reply with comments, critique and further insights.

I was curious on the most recommended way to start tanking/circle kiting Halion while first entering the shadow realm; I don't honestly know which way to start, to help avoid A.) Tail swiping, and B.) Lazer killing. Any tank methods of choice?

But why Ruby Sanctum, why did they choose this one? There is another gate in Wyrmrest with drakes casting shadow beams from which i assume is the Shadow Sanctum, so why not there? It would be much more awesome.
First off, the "Shadow Sanctum" Already exists - Its the
Obsidium
Sanctum. Second, even if it wasn't, whats the point of Deathwing attacking his own sanctum.
The other three Sanctums are Emerald, Blue/Sapphire and Bronze. The one you saw is one of those three. Don't pay attention to the colour of the beams, pay attention to the colour of the Dragonspawn shooting the beams.

The section on Corporeality in the article is wrong. If you see Corporeality greater than 50% in your realm, you need to do more DPS, not less.
Damage pushes Halion toward the other realm. So if damage is high in your realm, he will be moving toward the other realm, and the Corporeality will drop.

After wiping about 100 times (and downing him a few times) I have the following tips:
1.
Be very clear about assignments.
Everyone needs to know what realm they should be in in each phase and what their job is: whether it's tanking, healing, dispelling, or DPSing. One person in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing will wipe you. What I've found is that after a few wipes the raid leader inevitably redoes the assignments, usually in a rambling mess over vent. Do your raid a favor and type out all the assignments in raid chat before each and every pull so it is very clear who is doing what. Also, don't refer to the fire or shadow realm as "inside" or "outside." This is very ambiguous and will lead to confusion.
2.
The tank in the shadow realm needs to know how to rotate the dragon when the lasers come up.
A skilled tank can rotate the dragon in such a way that the raid doesn't even need to worry about the lasers, so long as they stay perpendicular with the dragon's side at all times. Consistency is important. Uneven rotation, unnecessary kiting, bad initial positioning will all throw the raid off and likely lead to a wipe. The tank needs to allow the raid to get into a groove with consistent tanking.
3.
Have good dispellers.
This cannot be emphasized enough. You can't just wing it. You need to assign dispellers to each realm, and they need to actually know how to dispell on this fight. Afflicted players must be at the outer ring before they can be dispelled, and once they are, the dispel must occur immediately. One missed or badly placed dispell will easily wipe the raid. Also, while some classes can dispell themselves, these abilities often have cooldowns and are better saved for emergencies.
4.
The key to the fight is the transition from phase 2 to phase 3.
Unsmooth transitions will wipe your raid more than anything. We have found it's best for a tank and healer to hang out in the physical realm during phase 2, just twiddling their thumbs while the rest of the raid fights in the shadow realm; then, when phase 3 occurs, the tank immediately picks up the dragon. During the transition, neither realm should do any DPS until everyone is situated. Players going back to the physical realm should only take the portal when it's safe. This means not going in front of the breathing dragon to click the portal. This means not running through a laser to click a portal. Take your time.
5.
Understand corpreality.
If the yellow text at the top of your screen says 40%, the DPS in your realm needs to slow down or stop. If the yellow text at the top of your screen says 50%, both realms should DPS as hard as possible, even if your message ("Your efforts force Halion...") implies you should be slowing down. If the yellow text at the top of your screen says 60%, the DPS in your realm needs to DPS as hard as possible and the DPS in the opposite realm needs to slow down or stop.

Currently (patch 4.0.3a) Halion is bugged, and randomly targets player and turns to them.
Usually its not a big deal, because he doesnt actually do anything, but sometimes, if you are unlucky enough he will turn in the same time when he uses his breath ability. And that is an instant wipe.
At first time we blamed our dpsers for overagroing, OT(adds tank) for mistaunting, but after analyzing logs and watching our videos, we found out that boss is just bugged and reacts on some abilites that some people in raid do.
On further investigation we noticed, that
Halion targets fire and frost mages
. We speced our mages to arcane and finally got our first heroic 25man kill.
Hope it helped.

Halion25 Heroic
Easy tactics for Cata Patch 4.3.4
3tanks 5healers rest dps (u need all 25)
- Most important thing is not to lose tanks to Slicers.
- No need to run on the sides for debuff. BUT u need to insta dispel.
2tanks 1healer staying UP all the time.(1tank for boss 1tank for adds) Plus 1-2 aoe dpser helps with adds (but goes IN and then comes back).
Everyone else are going IN the portal and staying there.
- BL at the mid of the Phase2 to make sure everyone gets it.
Prepare people for 1-2 introductory wipes so everyone will know whats UP/DOWN(IN/OUT), how portals looks, how Slicers rotates, how to Dispel fast.
You will fail if tanks dies but u will succed if tanks r alive and half of raid is dead.
Its Puggable ;)

Since 5.0.4, Halion likes to randomly despawn, both midfight and pre-pull. Good times. We haven't been able to kill him, the lowest we've gotten him his 40% before a despawn.
Later edit: this has since been fixed.

Soloing this MAY be possible at 90... But I highly doubt it.
When Halion reaches Phase 3 he appears in both the physical and Twilight Realms. If there isnt at least one player in both realms, he starts regenerating about a hundred thousand life every second.
It wasnt an incredibly fast regeneration where his health bar rocketed upwards, but it was still fast enough that any class who could out-dps the regeneration rate would have almost no time for anything else short of DPSing, let alone healing themselves.
Attempted this on my 470 ilevel Windwalker/Brewmaster Monk and 468 ilevel Frost/Blood DK, with both specs. I never died to him while Brewmaster or Blood, but I couldnt put out the DPS to kill him, while Frost and Windwalker had the opposite problem.
Maybe a Hunter/Warlock/Enhance Shaman could do this is they popped every cooldown and burned him hard. That's a big maybe.

Just solo'd Halion as a lvl 90 titan grip fury warrior. Item lvl 485. Spec'd into second wind for low health heals. Don't know how much of a feat this is, if any what with the gear levels available now days but did it all the same. I'm not the best at my class so took me a few attempts but mainly because of not concentrating and getting caught by the twilight Cutter at low health.. other damage wasn't to much of a problem and although I was quite low on health Second wind kept me going.
Don't know if this will help anyone (meaning warriors mainly) but here's how it went for me.... P1.. ran in dps etc etc... at 75% hp Halion will open a portal to the Twilight Realm, at that point I stopped and bandaged.. great, back to full health. Prob being that by the time I got in, so was he so if I did it again I would be in the portal asap (don't know what difference this may or may not make, but I stayed in the twilight realm for the rest of the fight). After just 20 seconds or so I was low health and was planning on letting myself die and although I jumped into the twilight cutter to move things along... I was still there so figured go for it. I dropped a health potion popped all cd's (Banner, Reck, Blood Fury etc.. didn't have Avatar at the time as I was spec'd into storm bolt from doing Ony 10). It was a bit slow but as long as you can keep your dps above his hps then you whittle him away.
Now I can't comment in any way to help other classes from here.. but for me or at least a warrior, once he's at 20% it should be plain sailing... Execute will do the rest, and quickly. Last 20% besides one Bloodthirst and the auto attack I got Execute off twice thanks to a 1.6 mil crit and it was all over. Beating the enrage timer wasn't a prob either but i'm sure there are plenty of you out there which will make much lighter work of the fight than I did.

I duo-ed this guy today with a friend at 90. Rogue + DK duo, we are both in crafted blues with Klaxxi rep weapons, item levels around 450ish. We easily killed this boss.
Phase one we basically exploded the boss until phase two, when he enters the rift. We killed the shadowy version and instead of each of us simply staying on either side in phase 3, we just bounced back and forth bewteen the two. Do that seemed to negate the his regen and we noticed that the boss took loads more damage when in the shadowy state. It worked out pretty well. Neither of us had done the fight and we managed to pull it off with relative ease.

Just solo'd as an Ele Shaman iLvl 481.
Phase 1:
Just dps (DON'T pop any cooldowns & mind out for gunk on the floor) until he hits 75% health.
Phase 2:
Jumped into the Twilight realm & just popped everything to burst him down.
Use any health regens you have if you start to drop below 50%. DO NOT use them all up in one go though as your health goes up & down like a yo-yo during the end of this phase and the start of Phase 3.
Phase 3:
Guessing this is where he spawns in both realms (
but I didn't notice the start of this phase!
). Didn't bother jumping back and forth. Just stayed in the twilight realm & carried on burning him down.
NOTE:
Keep out of the purple ooze that spawns on the floor and watch out for the beams
Took a few attempts to get it right but finally got there.
Recount states my dps was 68k at the end of the encounter.. this was enough to counter his heals in phase 3.
Hope that helps
PS. Adds are more of a headache than the 3 mini bosses & the main boss! Go figure....

Solo'd as a windwalker monk today.
Only ilvl 448 equipped. Engineering as a primary profession. Now here's how I did it--
Helpful/required glyphs and talents:
白虎下凡
金创药
动如脱兔
真气波
被烧毁的雕文
Don't use
被烧毁的雕文
! It's a common glyph for general PvE content so make sure to take it out!
I pulled using a Landshark, then immediately popped Xuen and rolled to lose aggro. Xuen tanked for the 45 seconds he was up--he didn't die, but was low on health when he left. Phase one isn't tough at all, just don't stand in the fire :P When Xuen left, I used the dodge glove tinker and could easily keep myself up, making a smooth transition into...
Phase two, I headed through the portal and engaged Halion there. I played defensively: Chi Wave on cooldown, Expel harm too, Blackout Kick helped a lot too. Rather than using Tigereye Brew when it reached 10 stacks, I used it when Healing Elixirs was up for the 10% heal and tried to use a Blackout Kick immediately afterwards to make the most of the short-lived damage boost. I used Touch of Karma about halfway through this phase, when my health got to about 20%, and healed myself to full using Healing Spheres. This phase is more healing focused than phase one, but not quite as hard as...
Phase three is when things get interesting. Halion started to hit harder, but so did I. For the first part of phase three, played normally but used cooldowns; Xuen came off cooldown and I had him tank for about 20 seconds when he died from the increased damage. The biggest change about this phase from the last one is that Blackout Kick became my biggest heal. This happened at ~80% Corporeality. It took priority over Chi Wave because it had a lot more hps, or around 35k per Kick at 100% Corporeality. Keeping the Rising Sun Kick buff up made Blackout Kick heal for even more. Even with the increased healing though, the damage was still stacking up. I saved a health pot for this phase, and used Touch of Karma near the end, finishing off Halion with around 50% health remaining. Then I realized I forgot about Fortifying Brew the whole fight :<
TL;DR:
Phase one: Xuen tanks, you deeps Hal down.
Phase two: play defensively, try to save cooldowns, Tigereye Brew used for heals from Healing Elixirs.
Phase three: pop cooldowns as needed, Tigereye Brew used for heals again, Blackout Kick is your biggest heal, and don't forget about Fortifying Brew like I did. :P

Soloed a 10-man Heroic version of Halion as an Affli Warlock with Voidlord.
Talents:
Harvest Life, Mortal Coil, Dark Bargain, Burning Rush, Grimoire of Supremacy, Kil'jaeden's Cunning
Glyphs:
Demon Training, Siphon Life, Soul Shards
Tactic:
The fight is a little bugged while soloing. This was my first attempt, so I made a few mistakes.
The fight against mini-bosses is simple, which is why I don't put them in this video. Do not stand at the front and the back of Halion.
P1 (Physical realm):
Every time Fiery Combustion deals damage, it generates a Mark of Combustion charge on you. When Combustion fades or is dispelled, it unleashes a patch of fire proportional in size to the number of charges present at the time. You can use Unbound Will talent to quickly dispel first Fiery Combustion. Then you should reach phase 2, before the second Fiery Combustion will generate too much charges of Mark of Combustion. Get out of the Combustion as soon as possible, because it applies a stacking debuff. Remember to avoid Meteor and not stand in the fire. If you survive this phase, you succeed in killing Halion.
P2 (Twilight realm):
At 75%, Halion shifts to the Twilight realm and opens a permanent portal so you can follow for Phase 2. In this realm, he does not use Soul Consumption (equivalent of Fiery Combustion), so stay here until the end of the fight. The only thing you need to watch out is Twilight Cutter. You should go through the beams only when you have an active Twilight Ward.
P3 (both realms):
At 50%, Halion is present in both realms at the same time. This phase is almost the same as phase 2. Boss will heal himself and receive a buff called Corporeality. Depending on the value of Corporality, Halion deals and takes more damage in one realm than the other. Corporality will grow with time, so you only need to dps him and survive to the end of the fight. Good Luck and Have Fun!

It is not possible to solo Him because you need one person for the normal and one person for the shadow side. Minimum of two people required. Kept my spirit pet healed and could work him down to the point where I had to switch sides and then he was healed up on the other side. Worked him down only to find him healed up on the other side again. Fought him until the battle timed out. The solo video had to be a fluke because you MUST have someone working the other side.
Update 1-20-2013. Downed Halion with the help of a Guild Mate. As stated before, you must have someone on each side or Halion regenerates health on the side you are not fighting. The mechanics of this fight make it impossible for anyone to solo.

solo'd 10 men as a blood DK in dps gear (490ilvl)
phase 1 and 2 are pretty tank and spank. just avoid flames in p1 and twilight ... lines in p2. phase 3 was a bir tricky. in phase 3 there will be 2 bosses: one in normal realm other in twilight realm. if there is no damage in both realms, boss will regenerate. the trick is damaging boss in both realms at the same time (yes, dots :D ) when p3 starts, i went to normal realm, dotted the boss and went back to twilight realm. just in every 30secs or so, switch realm, dot and turn back to previous realm. i think which realm u stay will not matter.
if u see a warning "without pressure in both realms, halion begins to regenerate" it means you are doing it wrong.
if you are doing everything correctly, you should see "your companions' effort force halion further into the twilight realm"
good luck.

This boss can be brute forced in 10N with a Blood DK in DPS gear (ilvl 460+). With the buff to damage at 100%, you can easily overcome the heal from being solo. Just keep the Death Strikes coming to maintain the self heals and you will be able to survive the damage from the other side of the buff. I was able to take him down easily in the Twilight realm after he was 80%. I'm sure better people than me can do this at a higher encounter level.

Just wanted to add my two cents about soloing this on heroic as a hunter.
ilvl 483. Consumables: 1000 agi flask and drums of forgotten kings.
I used MM spec for this. I tried it once in BM, but found there wasn't enough self healing.
The fight itself, I just burned him. The most important thing is to avoid standing in bad stuff! Phase one and two were simple. For phase three, use CD's whenever they are up. I found that once I got those in, I was able to beat his healing. Get through the first two phases as quickly as possible so that you can have the maximum amount of time in phase three. Keep MD and mend pet up at all times. I learned this the hard way... >.>
One HUGE thing to note. Do Not Use Feign Death! Every time I used it, he reset. Didn't matter if it was the normal realm or the twilight realm. He always reset.
Hopefully this will help some fellow hunters. As DBM says, "Good luck and have fun!"

Did this today 25m hc with 6 90s. It was tough and 1 tank died when he was on 10% but we got the kill.
Tanks: DK, Monk
DPS: 2x Shadow Priest, Mage
Healer: Priest
First attempt the boss was healing in Phase 1 which is not supposed to happen.... put this down to a bug as didn't happen in subsequent attempts.
Phase 1 all on boss nuke till 75%. When portal opens make sure you stay back to finish off any fire elementals first.
Phase 2 all on boss again - ppl need to move to the edge of the fighting zone for dispels.
Phase 3 1 tank in each realm DPS split accordingly and healer going wherever needed. The normal realm seems tougher as when tanking both fire elementals and the boss you take a ton of dmg which is how my tank died on 10%. The shadow priest who was with me managed to stay up long enough to keep the pressure in both realms and we got the kill a second before she died it was very close.
I should think this could be done by a group of 8-10 90s much easier it was for us :D

I read the comments here and other sites and had a lot of trouble soloing it until I understood what was happening, and then it was easy. So if you're having trouble the same way I was, maybe I can help explain it.
The key to this fight is corporeality. What can make it so challenging is that this mechanic can behave in...counter-intuitive ways. The more you hit him while on the light plane, the more you knock him out of the light plane and into the dark plane. The measure of his existance in one place is his corporeality. When you hit him, he fades more out of the plane you're in and more into the other plane.
So for example, when phase 3 starts (at 50%), you're in what I will call the dark plane, and at that point he splits so that he's 50% in dark and 50% in light. Well now if you hit him while in the dark plane, he'll be 40% in the dark plane and 60% in the light.
As his corporeality decreases in your plane, so does the damage. Both the damage he takes and the damage he causes will go down. Conversely, when his corporeality increases, both the damage he takes and the damage he causes will go up. This is what we want. High corporeality is a good thing. In fact, even low corporeality is a good thing, because that means it's high on the other plane, and we can just go to the other plane and wail on him there. What you don't want is balance. If he remains balanced between the two planes, you're going to have a really hard time outdamaging his heals, because remember, the more you nuke him, the less damage he'll take, until ultimately he's taking very near zero damage. You can try to prevent the healing and keep him balanced, but I think most will find it much simpler to out damage his healing once the corporeality stats to stack to one side.
Here's where it can get confusing. There seems to be lots of ways to, essentially, hit him from the other side. Either by accident or design. It seems that if your two Halions occupy the same physical area, most AoE attacks or cleaves will hit both of them. This seems to depend a lot on the nature of your abilities and can vary a lot between class and spec. When you hit him enough to push him further out of your plane, you'll get a message to the effect that your actions push Halion away, or whatever. But occasionally you may see messages (yes, even soloing) that your companions have pushed Halion further into your plane! And self healing abilities seem to push him into your plane from the other side.
I can't say I understand how it works. Just try to pay attention to how your abilities are effecting his corporeality, either positively or negatively. It doesn't always make sense. But paying attention to it and trying to react accordingly should bring you the results you want. Just remember, you ideally want his damage taken to be increased by 100% or more. I think it can go as high as 400% at full corporeality, at which point you just have to poke him with a stick and he falls over dead.

(On 10 man) I read all the comments on here before having a go. What I found quite effective was, once in the third phase:
keep widow venom up to reduce healing
primarily stay in the twilight side but pop through to drop traps under him then pop back
prioritise multi-shot and glaive toss, as some comments here indicate that AoE will hit both sides.
BM Hunter average ilvl 487. I used a t-rex in tank spec, barely had to heal him, saved all cooldowns until phase 3, and managed to down Halion first try.

Finally managed to solo this on the 5th attempt on
Heroic 10-man
as an Enhancement Shaman (504 ilevel, 4/5 T14 --
My Character
).
As all the other comments have said,
Phase 1
and
Phase 2
are not a problem. Avoid the Fire and then avoid the twilight cutter. Not a problem.
Phase 3
Was constantly giving me problems where his corporeality was staying at 40-60% and I just wasn't able to beat his enrage timer (he was staying at ~50% hp, whether I auto-attacked or blew all my CDs).
The way I managed to beat it was his corporeality suddenly started stacking up in the twilight realm (I never left this realm after entering it at 75%).
I don't know whether my earlier attempts were bugs where the corporeality wasn't stacking up properly or if the attempt I killed him was a bug where corporeality was stacking fairly quickly in my current realm (despite me DPSing normaly, including CD rotation).
My tips for this fight SOLO are just to stick at it and provided you have decent DPS (if you can pull some 70k DPS in a normal raid, you should be fine) and decent survivability you will kill him. You're just waiting for that attempt where corporeality starts stacking in your current realm.
I killed him (with ease on this attempt, I might add) when his corporeality had reached 70% and over 4 minutes left on the enrage timer.
TL;DR
He isn't difficult.
He doesn't require some insane DPS, or insane healing.
There isn't a lot to watch out for.
Staying in the twilight realm from 75% to 0% is easiest.
You're just waiting for that
ONE
attempt where corporeality works for you.

In case you were wondering, he can be soloed. You just need the DPS to push through the healing phase he has when there is not a person in each realm. I just did it on my Monk with about 500 ilvl.
Also,
风火雷电
despawns when you go to the other realm, so that won't work to keep him from healing.

How to solo Halion on Heroic 10-man as a Priest
(might apply for other classes too).
Phase 1 and 2 are easy, just avoid all the obvious things. Shuldn't be too hard. It's in phase 3 things start to get ugly, so here's my little guide.
Heals count as the
other
side pushing him
towards you
, so use this to your advantage. As soon as you reach phase 3, stay in the shadow realm and stop all DPS. Heal yourself to keep you alive and keep doing it until he is completely phased into the shadow realm. He will deal 200% more damage at that point, but also take 400% more damage.
If you do it right, he will not be healed up to full HP yet, but even if he is, you should be able to nuke him down really quickly after that. Keep putting HoTs on you and throw the occasional heal to keep you alive while burning him down as fast as you can. By keeping your heals up, he will keep taking 400% damage until he's dead.
I attempted this as Shadow, but I went oom before he got vulnerable enough. I highly recommend doing this as Holy or Disc. Other classes might have similar problems and might want to attempt with a healing spec instead if nothing else seems to work.
Good luck!

I soloed this on 25H difficulty as an ilevel 540 Blood death knight.
It is an extremely simple tank and spank fight, with one caveat: You must stay in the twilight realm.

Totally soloable if you stay in Twilight realm. Did it today on my 527 Prot Pally.

Easy as pie for 542 Enhancement. Stay in the twilight realm. Heal yourself as often as you can in the third phase (not to stay alive, you won't have problems with that, but to keep him from phasing toward the Light side). Save your big CDs for the third phase.

Just solo'd 25H as a BM hunter. I had my toon tank instead of the pet so the pet could do more damage. Glyph of liberation, spirit bond, and spirit beast heals were more than enough to keep me up.
I think the most difficult part was the dps requirement, as halion will heal when there is nobody in the other realm. Definitely save lust + potion for the 3rd phase (below 50%) and stay in the spirit realm. For reference my meters said I did 111m damage (so he healed for 51m total) and sustained 350k dps.
Another poster suggested using ground effects. I tried throwing down explosive traps and they didn't seem to do much. At 75% I threw one down in the center before going into the spirit realm and around 40% (giving the first one time to proc in the normal realm) and my meters read that they did 240k damage total throughout the fight. Probably not worth the globals.
If you can get a friend to help I think it would become much easier. Not having to deal with Halion healing makes the fight much shorter, and thus would probably decrease the damage requirement by a lot. The survivability/self healing requirement could probably be accomplished by many specs.

I don't know if it's a bug or something, but I just solo'd it, 91 Ret Pally, and I simply DPS'd him until he died....problem was I did not receive credit for the kill, so no achievement.
Started the fight in the middle doing DPS, then the Portal showed up, went through it and there was nothing except the two blue "spark balls" going in circle. Character wasn't in combat, I moved away from the middle then the NPC showed up. I DPS'd him until he died (took a while)...and then the corpse was on the floor, no credit for the kill, nothing....
Did I do something wrong and/or forget something ?
UPDATE:
I redid it this morning after raid reset, and it didn't got the same way! Might help some, who knows:
1- Got in the ring, fought the dragon, then it went away in the twilight (portal).
2- Got in the portal, and there he was. Stunned me, for 2-3 seconds, then just DPS'd him all the way until he died. I got the achievement and also the kill credit for the quest in this raid from the Sanctum Guardian.
Who knows what happened the first time around, but at least now it worked! :)

If anyone is looking to solo Halion as a lvl 100 character, be careful not to DPS him too quickly. You must give him to to transition between his phases.
I accidently blew him up too quickly, which resultet in Halion jumping into some weird realm, and me being stuck in the twilight realm.
I didnt get loot, achivement or credit for the kill, but I was locked and couldn't attempt it again.

I had trouble with him despawning because I was killing him too quickly. I was playing a lvl 110 ret paladin with Ashbringer. I then decided to place my weapon in my bags, and just hit him with white damage only (no abilities or special attacks at all) and he died within about 23 seconds and I was able to loot him and receive the achievements. It seems you have to let him transition through his phases and it doesn't bug.

If you are having troubles with him despawning when following him in the portal and you have any kind of dot then don't follow him. Just dot him up and wait for him to die without clicking the portal. That's what helped me at least as a moonkin/feral
