The ammo it uses in 3D model viewer(haven't actually seen it in game yet) look like the goblin rocket launcher and the wowhead symbol.

These cannons deal more damage the closer the target is to the center of the aiming reticule - around the edges will be mild damage, but a direct hit can hit as high as 6.5k damage at level 80 - so lead your shots for maximum damage (ie: aim where they're going to be, not where they are)

They do maximum 6000 damage. If your lucky and spamming Shoot-button it may shoot away 2 shoots instead of 1. Happens some times.

these cannons have a big downside to. always let someone defend the final courtyard because these cannons can be shadowstept by a rogue!

ok, maybe an 85 update?
* These things can hit multiple enemies in their blast area.
* It may be a display or lat issue, but yes - sometimes it will look like I have 8 or 9 in the air. The majority of the time, only 1 'hit' occurs - but I HAVE seen 2 (combat log frame).
* against walking (not mounted or in demos) there appears to sometimes be a knockback/bounce effect on a direct (not fringe/edge) hit; I have observed this when there are NO demos/friendly players present (since they have that effect on ramming/pushback spells, like typhoon).
* The hits can crit - and somehow overall damage/chance of crit is tied in some way to the character stats/gear; my very-well geared druidess does higher damage & crits more often than my new-85 rogue. oh - damage update: I've hd multi-crits for 30k+ per vehicle/person in the blast, so don't let anyone tell you manning the guns is stupid (unless they are hitting multi players/vehicles for 30k+)
* they can take a fair beating, and can't be effectively CCed; the player will take no damage until the cannon is destroyed, and players cannot be forced/knocked from the cannon while it is still operational.
* unlike the ones in IoC, these cannot be repaired; once down, they are down.
* smart players will usually choose the inside-edge ones, as it is a bit faster/easier/safer to fall back when it is time. The outside ones give a bit more range/reach for the outside-edge spawning demos on the beach - so maybe 1 extra hit in on a good shot.
* the cannon have a greater range than the demos, so you will be able to hit them before they hit you/the gate. You can't stop player seaforium charges/rushes, and the charges HAVE to be disarmed - you can't 'blast them' away.
* when players/demos are at a gate proper, the guns do have a blind spot range; both will have to be manned, or smart drivers/players will just park in the blind. They cannot turn around/behind at all, but you can hit the other platform if your gate-gun buddy is being attacked.
* for the red/purple gates: the cannon will NOT reach far enough to damage the area by the GY markers - so they can't interrupt caps.
* finally, the gunners have the BEST view to call if there is a rush to either the blue or green gate right from the start.

On Defense? make sure all 4 (2 green & 2 blue)are manned at the start. I have seen NO pugs and very few pre-mades where the team was capable of completely holding them on the beach without gun support. You want your biggest damage/heavy crit people manning them. And if it appears to be a dedicated rush, then the abandon-side gunners should get onto the beach or else fall back to the gate BEHIND the rush gate.
On Offense? Any rogue with shadowstep can play utter havoc here, just by sprint, shadowstep, prep, vanish, etc. Start off on the tip of the boat incoming, AFTER it edges past the dock. You will want to get/cap the GY closest to whichever side you are breaking in first, so your team has 2 more demos right there - but you can often cap them both, even if solo, and pick up a sea charge to SS through the yellow-gate guns & get the first hit on the relic chamber door before anyone is the wiser. (remember, do NOT cap the last/S GY, unless your team has 5-6 demos up and rolling on yellow).
Wowwiki says this can also be done with killing spree, but that puts you in combat and out of stealth; sub/shadowstep is a superior tactic for this (and one to watch out for on Defense; I have seen more & more of it in the past few weeks)
4-5 rogues (combat, sub - not assassination) with seaforium charges could pop right through all the walls & just pop the relic door . . .
