There are 3 stages of him summoning "pets" before you actually get to fight him. (Don't worry, there's breaks in between for as long as you need, and each is summoned at a different location.)
Not a hard fight. Ranged DPS is definitely needed. Have the tank keep him in once place (No sense to try and avoid his frost bomb, he keeps casting it unless he's kept fully inside of one.) The ranged must stay outside the frost bomb area, and when he teleports to the middle to cast arcane explosion, you have to hide behind the pillars.

When you first encounter him, he'll be standing on the perimeter sections all by himself. When you approach he has a chance to spawn one of three packs of mobs:
Animals: kill the cloud serpent first.
Elementals: kill the fire elementals first.
Monsters: kill the ogre first.
I'm not exactly sure why - the person I ran this with told us this, and it seemed to work. I assume this is because those mobs have nasty debuffs, aoe, whatever.
Note that when he spawns these mobs he, himself, is not in the fight. You don't engage the boss directly until after these 3 waves of summons and you find him on the center structure.
When you fight him directly, he has two main parts.
During most of the fight he will cast what appears to be a frost trap on the ground while you fight him. If you stand on top of the frost trap, you'll get a debuff called frostbomb that ticks for frost damage every few seconds, around 650 in heroic. In heroic mode this is combined with another debuff called frost buffet, which amplifies frost damage the longer you're on top of the frost trap area (1x, then 2x, then 3x, etc). Frost buffet does not appear in regular mode. In heroic mode players can go down very quickly if they stick in the frost area too long, as they'll be taking insane amounts of damage very quickly once frost buffet starts stacking.
The way I've seen this countered most often is for the tank to drag Urom around the ring by walking and tanking backwards. You fight on a ring, so you can just walk backwards indefinitely. Doing this will continuously move Urom away from his frost trap area. Everyone else should follow behind the tank, so as to stay away from the frost trap area. Melee DPS can have an especially hard time with this, and they will require heals in addition to the tank, because they're going to be popping on and off this area as Urom recasts (which he does frequently). The frost area slows, so you can kind of get stuck in it due to the reduction in movement speed. Stay aware and stay out of it. Just have everyone walk backwards, everyone stay behind the tank, and heal up during the arcane explosion break, which is explained below.
The second part happens every so often in the fight. Urom will teleport to the center of the Nexus and yell something about power and destroying you and such, and cast an arcane explosion. When he does this, you'll need to run behind one of the large stone pillars that should be nearby you, in order to shield yourself from his arcane explosion. This is kind of similar to Murmur or Shade of Aran, but instead of getting so far away, you're getting behind something. There are two differences between normal and heroic mode for this ability. The first is the time you have to get to safety - in heroic mode it's significantly shorter than regular mode, and unless you start running to the nearest pillar as soon as he teleports, you aren't going to make it. The second is the damage, which is increased in heroic mode. As a pre-made DK on the beta server, his AE hit me for around 8k in heroic.

I'll add a quick take on this on heroic mode. It took my group 4 tries to get a good strategy down, and I run a primarily melee stack group so it's tough.
Basically, his frost bomb is centered around your tank, and he casts it every about 8 seconds. What you do is have your tank sit still and take the bomb, then turn and run out of the frost field (he will be slowed), and once he reaches the edge, turn around and keep tanking. This allows your melee to attack him for about 6 seconds. Once he's casting frost bomb again, melee pulls out, tank stays put, and you repeat.
The key is to minimize the stacks on people and the damage taken, and this does an admirable job, so long as everyone knows what they're doing.

I just ran this on Heroic. We found the easiest way to take him, was to keep on kiting him around the circle. As soon as he does his emote saying about the teleport, hide behind the pole things. Then continue kiting again!

On Heroic mode you can't expect the healer to heal your party through the frost bombs. The most effective method is to keep the healer a good 20 yards from everyone else and kite Urom in the direction of the healer. The healer should be casting instant cast heals while moving between bombs and be facing AWAY from the party so he can quickly get away from the explosions.
If you're fortunate enough to have a party consisting entirely of ranged DPS you can allow the tank to hold his ground while the healer heals through the frost bomb damage.

Heroic
After about 7-8 wipes on this boss, we found a great tactic:
Healer + range DPS stand behind a pillar, and then tank tanks it right beside pillar (making sure frost trap doesn't hit range people)
The melee DPS jumps in the frost trap and DPS's him until the debuff stacks too high, and then jump behind pillar (where range people is standing) waiting for the debuff to go off..
When he does arcane explosion the tank and melee DPS simply jump behind the pillar where range people is standing, and after the explosion tank quickly runs to the tanking spot again (to avoid a frost trap behind pillar, where range people is)

For any melee having a rough time with this guy, put on your frost resist gear if you have it.
That combined with frost aura if you have a pally with you helps a ton.
Went from 1000+ dmg per tick to 400-500.

After trying all tacs i could find on WoWhead, i came up with a simple, but working tactic.
All DPS (Everybody as caster) was standing at cover behind a pillar while tank was out in the open sucking up the frost bomb dmg.
When the arcaneexplosion was started to cast, tank could easily make it for cover, while the casters didn't have to do nothing but wait ;).

Easy CC for the groups he summons: Have any class that can break aggro (rogue's vanish, hunter's feign, probably even shadowmeld), go in and start the fight. Make sure the other party members on on the drakes, in the event of a problem. Once you break aggro and are out of combat the mobs reset and can be CC'd like any onther fight.

it should also be noted that he will do arcane explosion even if his hp goes to 0 during the casting from dots. we will then teleport back and die.
this is probably a rare event but something to watch out for.

Just as a note:
Doing this on Heroic with all melee dps is tough.
Downing him while having a shaman respec ele and having the two warriors do nothing while the shaman casts attacks every two seconds the entire fight should be an achievement.
And no, i could not make this **** up.

As a tip - if u have all ranged dps in party,tank need to hide from arcane explosion behind the column 'next' to one other party members are using.He usually casts frostbomb directly after teleporting back,so,if u'll stay all together.....i think you understood me))

This was a little confusing...
For those of you using Deadly Boss Mods (DBM) and fighting this boss for your first time please take note of this.
He will teleport to a different platform once you start fighting his minions, and after you are finished fighting them, you leave combat. DBM will tell you that your fight with Urom has finished after X amount of time. He will be on another platform and look just like he did when you first encountered him.
This fight did NOT reset!
DBM is simply telling you that you have left combat and are ready to continue to him.
Just continue on and fight him and after a few rounds of fights you will fight him for real in the center.

I am a level 80(just dinged) blood DK and i was healed by a level 78 priest. We almost made it! We could have made it if She understood how to avoid the Arcane Explotion!
Just get away from the icy ground.

Solo'ed as a Blood DK tank spec - normal mode for green xmas hat.
the first couple pulls in this instance with the whelps can be tough just use your cool downs properly. The only other tough part Soloing this was the Constructs, 3 mages and snowflake adds basically pop your AoD on the first pull and burn one down quick as possible and using your interrupts and strangulate properly. When you get to the 2nd pull just DG one of the mages + strangulate and kite him back as far as you can and LoS the other mages while kiting, after that the rest are easy just kite the rest of the construct + mage groups.
No need for Tips on the bosses as long as you know the fights its cake!
hope this helps anyone farming for the Hats, Nexus was a joke as well did that in my dps gear + tank spec.

Did this the other day on Heroic with my balance druid and he did NOT teleport to the center and explode... is this a bug, or did they change something? We all had to run to the sides and hope he did not get us, no wipes, but we ahd all done this before, several times.

He seems to jump into the final sequence too early at times, consequently bugging, despawning, and respawning.
When I went to see him today, he didn't spawn any pets or elementals but instead teleported in the middle of the Oculus, cast Empowered Arcane Explosion, and then fell right through the Oculus. After falling he despawned, and respawned again on the starting ledge at the Band of Transmutation. Rinse and repeat over and over again. It wasn't until I literally rammed into him with the drake that the proper sequence started.
Long story short: if he's bugging, drop onto him. That oughta get his attention.

Just recently had this guy bug on a regular leveling run, where we cleared the 3 waves of summons and he got stuck on the last platform and started his usual sequence of ice-bomb and then arcane explosion but then falling through the instance and resetting. The only way we managed to fix it was by the tank pulling and surviving until the empowered arcane explosion while everyone else waited on the normal middle platform, when the boss teleported he aggroed onto us waiting on the platform and we just had to kill him without the tank. Just a reference if anyone else experiences the same bug, it took us multiple tries to figure it out.

This fight is pretty easy on LFR mode. Don't bother kiting Urom around the ring, just have your healer and dps stay stacked, any amount of aoe healing will be able to overcome the frost debuff. When Urom casts empowered arcane explosion, LOS him using the pillars, you have plenty of time.

I didn't see this posted, but if you're soloing him, you have to chase him around the different pedestals using your mount. He resets hp with each fight.
