Once trained by a hunter, these mobs are basically the same as
Tundra Wolf
, which can also be found in Borean Tundra.
The cool black oil effect is a debuf that disappears once they are trained.
These are just ordinary wolfs. Nothing special.

I was very surprised the DEHTA didn't give any quests involving these guys and the other oil-covered animals in the vicinity. I guess they were too busy dealing with Ol Dirty D's (Nesingwary's) minions. It's also possible Blizz felt there were too many quests in the zone already.

These seem like a good place to farm chilled meat at the lower levels. Drops were pretty often and lots of wolves to kill. It is pretty easy to avoid the machines when farming as well.

A quick summary.
For the quest "Lupus Pupus", you are required to toss these guys wolf bait. Once you do, they will come up to you as a nuetral (yellow) target and leave a large pile of feces for you to investigate in order to find the quest item "Microfilm".
These wolves do not retain the black cloudy aura once tamed, your taming magically cleans off the oil to reveal a normal grey coat.
You'd figure these guys would instantly incinerate after a blast from your fireball or immolation trap due to their oily state, but sadly no. They do not take any additional damage from fire attacks.
The "Oil Coat" buff does do something though. Attacking this wolf will have a chance to proc "Oily Coat" on the animal, turning it slightly purple and reducing its chance to be hit by 20%.

According to comments and screenshots on the
WoW Petopia
forums, it IS possible to tame this and retain the oil-stained appearance.
The tame requires a bit of finesse, and if you are horde, it requires cooperation (or lucky timing) from an alliance character who has the quest
"Lupus Pupus"
. This quest is part of a chain from Fizzcrank airstrip.
Supposedly, the tame has to go off *exactly* when the wolf de-spawns. If the tame finishes before it de-spawns, it will lose the oil. If it takes too long, it will de-spawn and the tame will fail. But if the wolf de-spawns exactly when the tame completes, you will have your oil-stained pet. According to those who have successfully tamed:
The wolf will be aggressive when summoned for the first time after taming.
The oily appearance will stay when the wolf is stabled, killed and revived, dismissed and re-summoned, and during dungeons, raids, battlegrounds, and *arena matches.
*EDIT: The forum members on the wow-petopia site had tested it in the arenas, but apparently in some cases arena matches DO remove the oil coat. To be safe, best use a different pet for arena matches.
Good luck!
Edited to add: Tamed this on 8/21 and it worked exactly as described. A few times it looked like the timing had been correct, but the wolf couldn't be summoned. After a few attempts, the tame hit 0 seconds just as he de-spawned the wolf came when I called him, and had the "thick coat of oil" buff.
What I did exactly:
Stood next to the alliance player.
Shot freezing arrow between the wolf and the player.
Player threw meat, wolf hit trap and froze.
Cast Tame Beast with 6 seconds left on the ice. This will change depending on your haste, mine was at 270. With more haste you may need to start at 5 seconds or less. If you have less haste, you may need to start at 8 or 9.
If you see the animal "ding" or the bar turns green, he will summon with no oily coat, and you started too soon. If you can't summon and get the "No pet" error message you need to adjust your tame to start sooner.
I hope this info can help if someone wants to attempt taming this cool looking unusual pet.

If you tame this beast with the oil-stained buff,
DO NOT
use it in Arenas. The Arena will
remove
the oil-stained buff! Take it from me, I learned this lesson the hard way >.<
Unless something has changed regarding this pet recently.

Just wanted to add, you need 8 secs left on the trap when you start the tame with 0 haste. You must start the tame just as it ticks over to 8 secs left.
This should be easier to follow than the numbers that include person's haste.

Did this today! Amazing pet skin. Do just as above comments say:
Have +0 Haste.
Find someone on the quest, "Lupus Pupus"
Place freezing trap between wolf and character on quest.
Have person on quest use the meat item on wolf.
Wolf will run toward trap and get frozen.
Once the trap reaches around 7-8 seconds left, cast tame beast (watch wolf's debuff)
The wolf will come out of trap in 7-8 seconds, run a few steps forward, then run away and despawn just as the cast goes off. Call pet and he may still be oil-stained. If not, get the person to cast it again.
Note: For me, I cast Tame at 8 seconds many times and it did not work--however right at 7 seconds it worked first time. I'd say wait until 7s remaining just shows and quickly cast tame beast.
Hopefully Blizzard won't remove the buff on this pet as they did the Worgen gliched pet. I feared "Oily Coat" decreased chance to hit would transfer to the tamed version however I have not had the "Oily Coat" thing proc yet so we'll have to see (I figure if it can proc Blizzard would have to remove it as would make pet too "OP").

Hmm, I just tried to do it with one of my friends alts. Seems that the wolf was disappearing some time before the trap could even reach 10secs. Maybe they were standing to close or something. We'll be trying again tomorrow because we were both tired, maybe have him stand further back or dropping the quest and getting it again. I'm really hoping this wasn't fixed within the last 2 days since the last post on here. Wish me luck, let me know if you try and it fails for you as well.
I just re-tamed today, to see whether or not it had been fixed, and it hasn't.
With 0 haste, I left it in the trap until 9 seconds ticked over to 8 seconds.
I had random despawns, but there doesn't seem to be much you can do about it.
So, keep trying and good luck!

The reason why you don't need a trap anymore is due to Blizzard lowering the cast time of Tame Beast to 10 seconds
(down from 20)
in patch 4.0.1.
Therefore you now just need to count down yourself and attempt it a few times to get your timing right.
It still works. Blizzard hasn't done anything to this(as of yet). So hunters, tame this quickly before it's fixed :). Possibly grab another, just incase the black aura disappears.

So after I don't even know how many attemps I got this one today
here's what i did
removed ALL gear with haste on it
had friend throw the meat to him
i stood on the side facing both the wolf (on the left) and friend (on the right)
right before he stops moving to sniff the meat, i started casting tame
since it didn't show anything was tamed, we moved on to the next one but then i got a msg saying i already had a pet. no pet was found on my call pet bar so i logged out and could see him on my character screen. logged back in, called pet and out he ran - soaked in oil - and attacked one of the robots.
named mine blackfish after our favorite shadow priest on dethecus
pain to get but worth the time

Confirm that it still works. With 408 haste, i had to start my tame just before the wolf put their head down to eat the meat. VERY fine tuned timing. I actually took off a piece of gear to try and help with the timing since i was always a split second too early or too soon. Play with your gear and timing and you're bound to get something that works :)
Like littleblueflash says in their post, it may not show up in your pet bar right away. I went to the stables to dump my pets thinking they were interfering with my taming but it turned out i got my oil stained wolf. So if you don't see the flash of taming the pet and it says you already have a pet/are full, then you probably got it :)
It may take several attempts, but it's definitely still possible. Happy hunting :)

I rarely post, though I felt I had to for future hunters trying to attain this pet.
After repeating the forementioned process for approx. 15mins I became unable to attempt to tame another pet. Yet, when I tried to call my new wolf he was nowhere to be seen on my new pull out pet tab. I decided to hearth to the Dal Stable Master (must mention I'm not sure if the hearthing had an affect on the outcome here). When I arrived at the Stable Master my new wolf was showing as one of my available 4 pets(lvl 80), but I still couldn't call him.
I moved him to my stable, then back. My new pet was ready to call! GL all, hope this helps if you encounter the same issue.

I got my wolf today and I also needed to visit the stable to pull him in and out so I could call him. Actually they were two since I didn't realize I already got a successful tame before I did the second one.
Anyway, the oil debuff sadly despawned on both. After I got them and made sure they have oily fur, I put them to stables again, did some BGs and then took one out to show him to my friends and there was just a boring plain wolf :(. The same thing happened to the second one.
I will try to get him again but this time I will keep him with me.

Tamed him today, post 4.0. 570 haste no frost traps or anything, just timed it from when he started eating. Took a little bit to figure out the timing and then when I failed a tame, it said I had a pet already, checked the bag and there was no wolf so I summoned my cat, dismissed it, figured it bugged and kept going. Second time it happened to me I had a hunch and I logged out. My character screen had a gray wolf next to me and when I logged back in and I had not one, but two oily babies in my bag. Banked one just in case the oil washes off later.
Sooo, if you try to tame, are given the you already control someone and there is still nothing in your bag, log out and check, you probably got it.
Luck!

Verified that it can be tamed as of 10/29/10 and maintains the oil slicked coat. 563 haste, no trap, started my tame about half a second after he stuck his face in the bait.
At first, no pet showed in my call bar, so I attempted to try to tame another one, but got the message that I already had an active summon. Logged out, saw that I had a picture of a non-oil slicked wolf on my login screen. When I logged back into the game, I had a wolf on my call pet bar. I called him, and he came out aggressive and went right for one of the nearby mobs like a streak of black lightning.
I think I'm gonna call him Canola. :D

Myself and a guild mate got ours today. We are horde and one of our guild mates who was leveling an Alliance character helped us out when he got to the quest. Took some tries but we both got them. I had 545 haste and started taming the second the wolf dropped his head. I wasn't sure if I got the tame right it didn't show that I had a wolf but at the very last second when the wolf I was taming despawned he turned gray. I logged out and saw a gray wolf with me on the log in screen. Logged back in, called my pet and yay oil worg! A couple of min later my guildy got his timing right too and did the same log in and log out and in and he had his.

Here was my experience...
I had done the quest so I walked a guildy through the lead in's (Re-Cursive, then get find pilot quest in the top floor of inn) and we went and started trying...
Freezing the jerk was a no-go, he kept going neutral at the wrong time, so she would throw the meat, I would count 1 one thousand 2 one th and then cast tame beast. For about 6-7 tries I was either too early, or too late, too early and he loses the oil at the last second, too late and he dis-appears.
One note is that if he changed colors, he would still despawn sometimes and I'd have to call him and dismiss him.
Try 8-9 or somewhere in there he changed color at the very last second and I thought I'd lost him, I tried to pull up call pet but none were in there, we threw another piece of meat, and when I tried to tame the wolf it told me I had a pet already. I checked the call pet again, no pet, hit dismiss pet, it said I had no pet. Logged out and back in, and I had an oily wolf as a companion (login screen showed me with a grey wolf)

Saw this in town and knew I had to get one. Enlisted the help of an Alliance leveling and logged over to my Horde hunter. Started taming about 1 second after it stopped moving with 0 haste gear. Tried a couple times until it said I already had an active pet. Logged out, saw it on the character screen. Logged in and it summoned just fine.

I summoned this guy for the first time after 4.0.3 today and was extremely disappointed to see that when he first appeared he didn't have a pet bar. I remembered that was how they'd first nerfed the Worgen pet before changing the skin on all of them and was quite sad that the same fate might befall this cutie.
BUT then I decided to do some looking before I threw in the towel and I could still feed him, as well as spending his talents. I sent him after a squirrel in Dalaran and was very happy to see Furious Howl pop up across my screen and he killed it quite obediently.
So this might be a bug with many pets or just this one, but he is NOT dead and still working just fine even if you get a graphical glitch in 4.0.3.

Still tameable in 4.03a. Got as horde with some help... took around 20-30 tries. Also put a second one in stable for backup.
The sweet spot where the tame finishes is so incredibly tiny. Also when its tamed, the only place it will be summonable is inside your spell book until you relog then its normal.
Also when its tamed there is no abilities on the pet bar but they can be dragged on from the spell book and he functions like a normal wolf.

Tamed him today, 4.0.3, still works.
The only issue I had was as with previous posts I didn't know I had him. I knew something was up as I kept getting an error saying something about already having a summoned creature when i tried to tame another one, but I had no pet and he did not show up on my pet bar. I saw a post that said they logged out and back in, to my surprise as soon as I logged in he was there. Named him "Slick". With 20% haste it worked best without a trap and starting the tame just before he put his head down to eat.

Just tamed two of these babies, one for back up in case if ANYTHING happens to my Oni. It's very easy to get without having to have help from Alliance if you're Horde like me. Spamming that macro while his health slowly depletes while you tame him and having him die RIGHT as you finish tame and finished the macro works like a charm. Just got my frosty pawed bear pet as well from that. ^^ Got the Lone Hunter with his epic sword in his head, and my oil-stained birdy as well. Gonna snag the other buffed pets before Blizz decides to make it to where we cannot tame them anymore, yet we can keep them.
Edit: Here's a picture of my new baby. ^^

Still works as of 4.0.3
Easier to tell now if you have the pet (and if it's oily).
Just check your "call pet" icon and it'll show you if you got him.
For me (at lvl 71 with very little haste), I just attacked one and waited until he was right close.
Then I threw the meat at him (Lupus Pupus quest), then immediately started taming.
He eats pretty much right away when he's that close. It took me about 3-4 tries with this method.
Side note: if you don't collect the final microfilm for the quest, you can keep throwing meat until you get your pet.

The timing is tricky to get right, but doable. I had 0 haste and on successful attempt started taming around 1 second before the wolf put his head down to eat. Ive had it tamed before he disappeared, but he remained black and was set on agro mode.
Took me around 20 mins of trying. Looks awesome.

This is still tame-able (not sure about getting banned though). What I had to do as Horde was ask a few people in Borean Tundra if they'd done the quest while on an alliance alt. I got them in vent to make things easier to coordinate.
All of the strategies and macros and whatnot I read about boiled down to simply timing the tame. I didn't use any form of CC, macros, etc.
- With or without haste you simply need to end the tame as the wolf walks away and de-spawns. The timer will go off but you shouldn't see the wolf ding or turn friendly. It will look like it actually de-spawned.
- If you check your summon pet bar after that happens, he won't be in there. Re-log, then check your pet bar and he'll be there.
- If you tamed too early and actually got a grey wolf, simply abandon him.
- If he doesn't show up, repeat the process. After 2 or 3 tries you'll start to get the hang of when you need to start the tame.
- I didn't stable any pets and I actually had 3 pets in my summon pet bar (I was lvl 76).
Remember, you have to finish the tame
RIGHT AS
it de-spawns.
Good luck, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do =)

Tamed a few on 09APR11.
No need to use abandon pet macro or trap if you have timed your tame. I targeted my wolf, threw the meat, waited a sec before he sniffed the ground then cast tame, logged out then in and I had a new awesomesauce pet.
It's just about timing. On one hunter I had to wait until he howled to cast tame, as mentioned above on one I had to wait a sec before he bent down and sniffed the ground and on another I had to wait a sec before he stopped running to cast tame.
If you see a ding it didn't work but if you didn't see a ding and you can't tame a new wolf that means it worked so just log out then in and /cheer.
FOR HORDE: You can still do the tame without the macro (that was patched anyway.) You either do the rev pet method or to do the meat method you need someone who has either a allie toon who can get the quest or has the time to level an allie death knight (
DK is faster to level to get to the quest rather then start fresh from 1
) to get this quest. You then sync with them and get them to throw the meat. Also you can always post on your realms forum (battlenet or even here on wowhead) and just ask for help, you'll be surprised there are nice people out there who still help those out in need.
Alas it's been patched *wraps wolfie in cotton wool and places him carefully into stable*

Patch 4.1 - Still Tamable using the quest meathod.
After over 250 tames attemps using the PetAbandon script I finally had to admit they may have patched it not to work. Seeing as I have tamed several other pets with this meathod pre-patch (within 10-20 tries) I find it hard to believe it's just my lousy timeing that many times in a row post-patch.
You'll know it worked when you get a 'you already have a summoned pet' message on your next tame attempt. Log out and back in for the wolf to show up as he wont show up in your inventory untill you do.
The third meathod of taming is to DPS him down to where he has just as much life as your serpent sting ticks for and then use that to kill him right as the tame goes off. Else have a friend kill him as tame goes off. But you HAVE to spam revive ASAP. Like before the server realizes what is going on and removes your pet buff.
The very and extreamly cliche name for this wolf is BP, but that name is so run into the ground. Im going with Iraq instead :P

Still doable. Just spent about 20 minutes on it and got my prize :)
The trick to it, in this patch, is as follows:
-throw the meat
-wait for him to run over and stop
-when he stops, wait roughly one second and hit your tame button
If you timed it right, it'll despawn and complete at the same time. If everything went good, when you "call" your wolf, he won't be on your pet list. Simply log out and log back in, and your pretty wolf will be waiting in the list. The oil coating never goes away, throughout logging or your death/the pets death.
Happy taming, hunters!

Tamed one today after a dozen or so tries--two, in fact.
I had 8.99% haste, and I started the tame as soon as the wolf put its head down to eat. I think it only worked when I started ~.2-.3 seconds before the wolf put its head down, but I used that as a marker, because I figured human error would make up such a small difference.
The tame ended exactly as the wolf despawned, and it did not immediately appear in my list of callable pets--so I did it a few more times, until it started telling me I couldn't tame any more pets. So I went to the stablemaster at Fizzcrank to see what was up after reloading my UI--and it showed two extra wolves in my available pets.
Lo and behold, I had two of them. So yes! It can still be done.

Confirmed it can still be tamed with the oil debuff. Did it today on my hunter, I used explosive trap and the tame finished the moment it died, I hit revive, stopped the cast by moving, logged out then back in, tried to revive it, but it said I have no pet, so I summoned the wolf, it said it was dead, so I revived it and it has the debuff. Yay for me!

In patch 4.3 it is still possible to tame with the oil buff. As said you need to do some parts of a quest line (Alliance only) that starts with
物质转换注射器
. If you've already done the quest or a horde player you need to find an ally friend who hasn't.
Once you have the quest go near a oil-stained wolf, throw the meat and the wolf will come neutral (you do NOT need a frost trap as an 85). The wolf will run in front of the person who threw the meat and start eating, poop, run away then despawn. You want to make sure the tame beast ends right as it despawns.
As an 85 hunter my tame beast is about 10 sec long so I started tame beast right as the wolf puts his head down to eat. You will have to play around with this for a while to find the right time to cast tame beast. You pretty much just try this over and over again.
When I finally did get the wolf it didn't appear at first and I didn't notice I even tamed it until I tried taming another one. So, I simply logged off and logged back in, and ta-da! you have your oily wolf! :)
For people who just love oil covered pets check out the

I can confirm that one can still tame the pet with the oil as of 4.2.2. I couldn't get the macro method to work, so I resorted to using the timing method.
As the wolf approaches, it stops, waits, and then bows its head to eat. I started casting about halfway into that pause before the wolf eats. As mentioned in other posts, you shouldn't see the ding animation. If you do, something probably went wrong. Continue trying it until you see it turn friendly (tamed) for a split-second, but don't try to summon. Even if you think you've done it, continue onto another wolf. If you find that you're unable to summon because the game client tells you that you already have an active pet, immediately log out. You should see the non-oily version of the wolf in your character selection window. Log back in and see if it worked!
Good luck from me and Howliburton!

Interesting little bit about after the tame: Use Camo and the wolf VANISHES! Well, until you hover over it. I guess the thick black aura completely cancels the normally white outline in Camo. I can see this being fun in PvP.
However, if they have a debuff that colors them, such as a poison making them green, it won't work.

I just tammed this as a horde hunter and I did NOT need an ali on the quest. It's doable without an ali.
Just use the technique where your tame goes off when the worg dies. It may take a few tries, specially if you're not used to the timing, or if your friend isn't. I had to bring someone with me, but we both successfully tamed the worg with the oil slick this way. Just make sure your tame goes off when the worg dies, and spam your revive pet. I noticed when we saw the tame animation even after the worg died, it did not keep the oil coat. But both times when our revive went off before the animation, our worgs had the oil coat.

Just did this today and can confirm it still works using the alliance quest method. It took forever, but I just threw the quest item at the wolf, then tried to time Tame Beast to start exactly when the wolf started eating. Eventually you will know you did it right when you go to do it again and you get the error message saying you already have an active pet. Log out and in and it should appear.
I ended up with two oil-stained pets. I didn't realize I had actually gotten one the first time the message appeared :) It took about an hour and a half between getting both of them.
P.S.- I am on the US Kilrogg server for anyone who would like help getting the pet!

I tried for about 20 mins with an alliance friend getting it, then tried with a horde friend with the killing method for maybe 20-30 mins.
I can't seem to get him
This is as of 4.3
Can any of the more experienced hunters comfirm this?

Hotfixed in 4.3
I tired using a trap and timing to tame it.
I tired using a "/script PetAbandon()" macro.
I tired logging out and in every time I thought I caught it.
I watched a video of someone in 4.2 taming it so it died, and when he rezzed it was oiled and I even achieved this... But no oil coating.
Hoping someone can prove me wrong... But it has been hotfixed, you can no longer get this oiled wolf.

Confirmed by a GM the wolf is supposed to loose the oil coat when tamed, and that's the way it's got to be, anything else (including walking around with an "illegal" pet) is considered exploit.

Sadly I don't think this works anymore, I tried having my friend kill it and tame using the quest, both ways didn't work. I was at it for about 2 hours...hopefully i'm just retarded and it still works. If anyone is able to tame it after this post, please post that it still works!

Its still works on 4.3 date: 05. January.2012
What i have done is :
Damage wolf until he has 2600-2800 hp. Lay fire trap. Instantly start tame. If the wolf is dead, and your tame cast is nearly over, spam ressurect pet.
It took me about 5 trys with this method. Sometimes i rezzed my pet but it had no oil aura.

Its official, it does work as of patch 4.3, i used gemy's method and it does take some time so be patient with it! took me about 40 minutes to get. I got about 10 wolves that rezzed without the oil and number lucky 11 still has the coating. I'd tell my wolf to hug you....but he'd cover you in oil ;D

While I can find no confirmation of hotfixing, I can safely say that you can no longer get this pet skin.
Having tried all the methods...spamming macro, killing at same time as tame ends, and just timing the tame when the wolf despawns, none of these work. I successfully completed each of the above tame methods, and while only the killing one works, the skin is grey, not black.
Tried these multiple times, over the span of several hours, with the same result.

This is still tameable in 4.3.0!
This is what you need:
- Time
- Patience
- A good friend
- Quartz for keeping an eye open for the castingtime
- And some luck
This is what you should do:
You start off by regular taming the beast, when it's about to get tamed, you've to click "Revive Pet". And you've to click it right before it's tamed. (You can click it when it's on the "Red" area on Quartz).
Your friend need to kill the Oil-stained Wolf when it's almost tamed, 0.001 sec left approx. And you need to click revive pet at the same time.
If you see the "tame" Flash, then you haven't done it successfully. if you see the pet despawn and no corpse > then you have succeded, hopefully..
overall it's all about repeating untill you get it right :)
This is how we did it, and it worked really well. Once you get the hang of it you can do it in 5 mins. but we were doing this for maybe 3 hours or something! (before we got the hang of it)
Happy hunting and good luck! I hope i helped you all that thought this was impossible!
(I might update this post and add a short filmclip into, to show you how it's done!)

Confirmed. I used Gemy's method and was able to do it. It's all about timing and getting the tame to go off right when the wolf dies and hitting revive pet right at that same moment as well. I played around with using different equipment do get the pet to different starting health for the fire trap. The less you have equipped the more control you have to getting the wolf's health to exactly where you want. I had one item equipped (my helm) and a level 200 bow. Three auto shots got the wolf down to where I can wack it with my fists and place his health just right. The starting health value will be different for people based on equipment, timing, and server lag. For me, the sweet spot seemed to be between 1600-1800 health.
Just keep trying and don't give up. Took me about an hour of trying and got my wolf. Very happy.

got it today 2/23/2012 by having a friend 1 shot it just as my tame is ending, and spamming revive pet right at the end of the tame. took about 5 minutes. the key is not just the timing of him dying, but to be spamming revive pet before he dies so it starts the moment he dies.

I tamed my ghost wolf in BC, and tamed King Krush early in wotlk, but I'd like to have tried to get this oil wolf before it was patched. Sounds like a fun challenge.

Does anyone know if faction and/or server changing will cause the wolf to lose the oil effect, whether its part of your summoned pets or in the stable?

As far as i can tell as of patch 5.05 it is no longer possible to tame the wolf and have it retain the oil coat, the same with the lone wolf, he no longer has a knife in his head after taming and killing him at the same time. hopefully this will save some of you some time, i spent four hours trying to tame a oil stained wolf....

I'm not sure what exactly happened, but having the pet for almost 4 years and now the oil coat being removed for no apparent reason seems weird. It happened when I respecced in a dungeon and resummoned the pet, tried to spec back and relog... nothing worked; seems like its gone forever :(
Besides its not like I didn't change specs a thousand times before. Just a heads up to my fellow hunters as I couldn't find any reports on this.

It appears that they wiped all of the Oil-Stained wolf skins in 5.1, as My wolf pet of nearly 4 years suddenly lost it's Oil Skin while logging in : / It's very, very sad to be honest... Blizzard puts in the effort to patch all the fun, cool, NOT op hunter glitch tames rather than fixing all the other various buffs...

I can confirm that this is STILL tamable as of 5.1, using the tame/kill/revive method. I tamed one earlier today using this method:
1) Have a high-level friend accompany you. They should have you as their focus.
2) Start a duel with your friend near the wolves.
3) Begin to tame the wolf.
4) While Tame Beast is channeling, spam this macro rapidly: /cast Revive Pet
5) During the very end of your cast, have your friend use an instant-cast ability that will one-shot the wolf. We found that doing this during the last 0.3 seconds of the cast worked well.
If you did it right, this is what should happen:
- The wolf will die and immediately despawn.
- You will NOT see a golden flash indicating that you tamed the pet.
- You will not be able to revive it, and you will get an error message saying "Your pet is not dead."
- You will not see the wolf in your stable or in your pet slots.
At this point, you should relog, and you will see a plain (non-oily) wolf next to you in your character selection screen. When you log in, it will show up in your pet slots, and you will be able to summon your new oily friend.
The oil-stained wolves is one of the few "appearance buff" pets that will retain its unique appearance after dying, so feel free to raid or quest with it. However, as always, do not bring it into an arena -- it will wipe the appearance buff from your pet.
One more note: this taming trick will work with
any
buffs with unique appearance buffs. We've had success with
孤独的猎手
,
幽爪奔跑者
,
染煞徘徊者
, and a few others.
Good luck, fellow hunters!

This - as of yet - has NOT worked for me. I have tried about 20 wolves - each one in turn has done exactly as it should according to your instructions and upon login - each one did NOT have the oily look.
Has anyone else tried this recently - as in the last couple weeks to see if it still works? If so - maybe try to see if anything is missing from the instructions. I've pretty much tamed everything tameable in the WoW world - so either something is missing here, it doesn't work - or I'm just not doing it right - and I'm pretty sure that isn't the case...

Just an FYI. I tamed the Oil-Stained wolf a few years ago and as of August 1, 2013, my wolf appears as a black silhouette; however, he still has the oily coat (a dark fog rolling off him).

Just wanted to let those that are taming this wolf know, that I have had this wolf (with the oily look on it) for over a year and all of a sudden during an LFR when I summoned him the oily look disappeared and no matter what I did I can't get it to return. I contacted GM's about it and apparently this is an issue that's happening to many hunters with this pet.
So be aware that there IS a chance that when you summon him the look can un-glitch (since it originally was a glitch to tame it that way) and it can go away and he will just be a normal dark grey wolf :(

Seems as of patch 6.2, if you are lucky enough to have manage a timed taming of the Oil-Stained Wolf, the wolf will no longer remain oil stained. The Oil-Stained wolf in my stable lost the sinister looking coat that it has had since WotLK, and became a common grey wolf.
Thanks to someone at Blizzards coding department who dropped the ball and ignored the "grandfathering" promise of the special pet.
It is such a shame to do this now to people who have had a unique skinned pet for so long.

For history's sake, I want to confirm I still have this wolf with the oil effect as of 4/24/24. Unfortunately, the black effect was soft nerfed awhile back and it isn't so "saturated" anymore. Still, it makes me nostalgic to bring it out.
I never take it out of major cities. Too afraid to lose it lol
