I saw this while on the "Springing the Trap" quest flying on the back of Keristrasza over the Nexus. I was just wondering if anyone knew what this was? It looked funky though!

As a hunter I sometimes see random NPCs floating around while I track other creatures, while tracking dragonkin I saw this unusual creature, My only hope of getting to it was to fly up and hit it with an arcane shot in midair, sadly I don't have cold weather flying training, so getting to the creature is nothing short of a dream for me... I WANT ITS SKIN!

This mob flies above The Nexus in Borean Tundra. I'm pretty sure its killable because if you mouse over him, your cursor will turn into a combat sword. The location is shown as unknown because no one has killed or interacted with it yet.

Killed it two times already as a mage, had to slow fall jump off one of the elevator buildings for the first kill. Each kill it only dropped one Iridescent Scale. As others stated it was circling the Nexus.

As stated by others, it flies around Nexus, too high up to shoot/cast spells at. I saw two up there at once.
However, data given is wrong: it has neutral reaction to alliance. (unless that's something to do with a reputation/quest chain?)

Its from Norse Mythology. If you go read a poem about "The Spirit of the North" You will see a lot of familiar names I almost thought that it was a poem written by blizzard.

That is a level-based drop (also known as a "world drop"). Every enemy within this level range can drop that helm (extremely rarely), among several other BoE blues. This random loot mechanic is true of nearly every level tier in the game.

The corpse does not fall when killed.
I managed to one-shot it using aimed shot from the top of a structure, but the corpse was still in the air, so I couldn't loot it.

In 5.1, arcane wyrms, including these white ones, have become beasts and are tameable by hunters as regular Serpents (i.e. any hunter spec can tame them).
These ones are extremely hard to aggro and therefore tame. There are two of them circling at any one time: a higher one and a lower one. I found the higher one started evading every time it got close enough to my platform for me to shoot it. I had trouble getting close enough to the lower one at all but eventually got it by flying well underneath, dismounting and shooting at it while I fell. The fall to the ground isn't too bad if you space it well.
There are four colours in the game, all tameable as of 5.1. See:
Blue:
奥术浮龙
Purple:
奥术浮蛇
Red:
厄科隆尼斯
(rare added in 5.1). There's also
疯狂的法力浮龙
s but they're not attackable or tameable
White:
北地之魂
There are also green and yellow colours in the database, but they're so far unused.

If you're having issues on how to get them to the ground to tame, here is what I did:
Remove all gear with stats, get as low as you can and still able to shoot glaive toss, shoot, drop, tame.

This pet is actually incredibly easy to get.
Ignore the lower one. It looks easier. It isn't. Head up to the three platforms floating above, stick yourself on the underside rungs of the middle one. KILL the upper spirit as it goes by. It spawns directly on one of these limbs holding it up a few minutes later; drop your freezing trap on the SOUTHERN rung's slope about halfway up and wait for it to spawn. Only when it's frozen, tame it. Done! No falling, no damage, no needing to shoot it.
Edit: Killing the lower one forces it to spawn within reach straight from the ground as well. It's just a matter of locking down the spawn points, dealing with people thinking you're griefing, and being patient.

For those hunters looking to tame this Wyrm I would suggest using
宁神射击
as it does no damage, yet causes aggro so that if you're high leveled you wont accidentally kill it.
The other thing is to either plan a path for your fall (Not recommended for the one flying higher up since you'd face death by falling. ) or have a priest
漂浮术
or a mage
缓落术
cast either spell, or have
高弹力衬垫
on your cloak.
Then you just simply fall fast or slowly (depending on the method you chose) a short way, and tame it.

Just tamed this on the live patched server. Not so much rare as hard to tame. They tend to fly too far away from any solid object for you to stand on, and too high to survive a fall.
The technique i used was, as a lvl 90, to remove all my equipment, fly just above it and unmount, spamming some sort of none damage hit that oesnt require a weapon to use, then as u fall use disengage to break the fall, and tame. This took some timing to do, with a splash of luck, and i had to use the Pandaren stun punch racial, so if you cant figure out what to use i suggest bringing a friend/guildy who has a taunt.

Just got this guy this evening on Eldre'Thalas. First thing I thought of was the trick for Ban'thalos, to try landing on a tree and waiting for him to come into reach. But I ended up just in front of the structure on the southern part of the map. Cords where 29.3 33.7.
In less then a minute he flew into range and I hit tame. Almost worked as North stopped flying and dropped to the ground. I had to get down myself to finish the taming. Now I just need to rename him, Jormungand comes to mind.

Here is a quick video I made on how to tame Spirit of the North:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LM5He2RLig
The challenges are:
- Not killing it since it has 9k HP (one autoshot will kill it)
- Surviving the Fall
I pulled him using this no-damage macro:
/cast Tranquilizing Shot
/stopcasting
Good luck! Very cool looking pet.

I tried a lot of what was said here a couple days ago - and couldn't get it. So I spent an hour working out a solution that was so simple it takes less than a minute.
There is a building directly south of the Nexus - and a tall spike directly left (if you are facing the building) of the entrance. Use your flying mount and land on top of the spike (yes - just like the spirit owl), shoot one Tranquilizing Shot at (/tar Spirit of the North) him as he flies by. He will land directly beneath you - slide down the spike and tame.
No death, no damage, and you have a wonderful cool pet. :D

Alternatively to using Tranquilizing Shot, the lower spirit can be pulled to the ground by removing gear and equipping a weak weapon to reduce damage to the spirit. Just wait until it pats close to the ground and shoot it down. If impatient, it can also be pulled down by shooting it and disengaging to reduce fall damage.

I eventually got this using Weislet's method, above, which doesn't really require this info. However when I first was trying to get this by aggroing and falling, I was trying to find the serpent via looking at the shadows on the ground (I have 'em on ultra so everything shows up, even from really far away) That doesn't work, though. These serpents have no shadows. Just a heads up.

If you're looking to tame one post 5.1: They are a pain in the ass to aggro. I made a macro:
/dismount
/cast tranquilizing shot
/stopcasting
I'm level 90, so I was worried that I would kill it before I got to tame it. That's why I used Tranq shot and a stop casting command to stop my auto-cast quickly.
Just position yourself as far away as possible (as close to the ground as possible) and use that macro, you will drop but if you're careful the fall won't kill you.
This skin is definitely my favorite, the ghostly white looks great with almost all transmogs.
Good luck (:

If you are good at timing Disengage to avoid fall damage, there's no need for fancy tricks. Use this macro so you don't kill it:
/cast Tranqulizing Shot
/stopattack
from up in the air. then as it aggros and you start to fall, Disengage before hitting the ground.

I honestly am not sure how I got it tamed, but I tamed it. It flew close to a structure on the ground, I fell and hit a shot, it didn't evade... hit Tame Beast and finished the tame at around 1k health (I'm only level 70.) Simply wingin' it, and a bit of luck.

There are several ways to tame this pet, but solo-taming it can prove extremely difficult since they fly quite high.
The only chance you have of solo-taming ine,is to go to the building directly south of the Nexus,at the southernmost part of the map,and land on the very edge of the arch on the front of the building.
Turn Track Beasts on and wait for one to pass. Simply casting a shot will not work, firstly because at lvl 90 even your weakest shots while naked will kill it, secondly because even if you manage to not kill it,it will not approach you close enough for you to use your tame beast ability. So your only chance is to aggro it and jump down and hope you survive the fall...
The easier way is to simply ask one of your Mage or Priest friends, have them cast Levitate/Slow Fall on you and aggro it while falling. It will then follow you to the ground where you can safely tame it! :)

Alright so some quick facts:
There are 2 in close proximity, they have a quick respawn timer and they are both more than 30 yards off the ground.
1 is quite high the other is less so. I followed the highest one around the platforms and could never get in range. I accidentally killed the lower one so stripped off all my gear except a bow and auto shot killed it with nearly double damage over kill. I then found a lil spike to perch on that was high enough to hit tame beast on the lower spirit. He will break the tame and try and get in range on the ground. Simply hop down and tame. Most 90's wont be able to shoot it without killing it as it only has 8,900hp.
Maniakra has the right idea with:
I pulled him using this no-damage macro
/cast Tranquilizing Shot
/stopcasting
What a beaut!

Easy to tame, just go for the one flying the lowest and lower yourself as far underneath it as you can without going out of range and hit it with a tranquilizer shot which does no damage and no auto shot. You'll land with about half your health and the serpent will come straight to you for a simple tame. Happy hunting :)

For those hunters that come to check this for a tip, here's what I did. I took off my gear, got a low level bow, went after the low flying one, dropped off my mount shooting it and quickly tamed it. These buggers are passive and constantly out of reach, so that is really the only way to tame one.

Don't let the height fool you. This really isn't a hard tame.
Use Tranquilizing Shot, since it does no damage and doesn't trigger an auto-attack. He will go to ground level. You will be dismounted, obviously, so this is where Step 2 comes in.
If you're an engineer, make sure you have either your glider or parachute tinkers. This will slow your fall.
If not, I recommend finding a priest with Levitate. I'm sure they're are other methods, like potions, that could help.
Once on the ground, start taming. He's only level 70 and doesn't hit hard at all, assuming he can get a hit on you if you're 90.

The building to the south of the instance has pointy ice things sticking up out of it. If you can balance yourself on one of them and begin your tame the serpent will fall to the ground below and you can drop town and tame it. :) easiest and quickest way.

I brought along my husband's mage to cast slow fall on me just in case. For some reason, when I would try the Tranquilizing Shot method these guys would never follow me and immediately begin to evade. I eventually took off all my armor, bought a super low-level bow (
Hunting Bow
) off the AH, and used Arcane Shot to lure them. The higher one evaded no matter what I did. The lower one beat me to the ground while I was slow falling. Tame successful. Happy hunting!

FUN, EASY WAY TO TAME IT:
1)Strip naked
2)Equip bow bought from Stormwind vendor
3)Die and get rez sickness
4)Fly 40 yards BELOW the serpent
5)Dismount and concussion shot as you fall
6)Kill all the adds on the ground you BEFORE it reaches you...
7)THEN tame.
You should be at Low Health, 140 gold repair bill and ready to feel like you EARNED this beauty!
All this talk about "the lower one" not being easy. was so easy i had to make up this "fun way to tame guide". Promptly named it "Haku". Enjoy.

i just tamed 2 of it in 10 mins. it also worked 2 other times (but i didnt bother to tame :D )
there are 2 spirits, one is fliying at middle level (mid), other one is flying at higher level (high). when they are both dead at the same time, mid will spawn at 27.00 - 32.00
ON THE GROUND
so:
make a macro /tar spirit of the north
dismiss ur current pet
go to 28.60 - 33.60, fly up, stay on the edge of the platform.
hit the macro, target high and kill it when its close enough. (it flies very slowly and as a very big circle, so you have to be patient)
fly down, fly around 27.00 - 32.00
hit the macro, target mid
be fast; dismount, kill mid, land with low heath (i didnt die at any of my attemps, i dont know if
威慑
helps. but be sure to be as far as possible to mid which means as close as to the ground)
if you didnt wait too long between each kill, in other words when they are both dead at the same time, u should see mid spawning at 27.00 - 32.00
ON THE GROUND
go tame it.
please comment if u try this tactic and rate if it works.

There are two of them I found near the southern floating platforms.
You basically, want to LAND on the GROUND after you aggro it with
宁神射击
so you don't kill it with your awesome auto-attacks.
That said, It means that the LOWER one is EASIER.
If you try landing on a platform(even the underside) or the weird arcane-power building, it will simply just stare at you and won't come to you. On the other hand, landing on the ground will just make it jump right in front of you!
Make sure you have already dismissed your pet else your pet might kill this beauty before you have a chance to set it to passive.
Good luck! It is indeed easier than it looks...

Just for anyone that is interested: I tamed it without flying.
It passes near that elevator so I went up that, jumped off and shot at it when it passed by, and as soon as I hit the ground (which damn near killed me) I dropped a freezing trap. It chased me, got frozen and I tamed it while it was frozen. Also I did this when I was at level 70, so its not impossible.

(Easiest way to do it) Go to the southern building like thing and just fly up to the serpent of the north(Lowest one also avoid dragons). Then just dismount shoot it once quickly then disengage when near the ground it does a sort of glitch towards you as it descends to you.

Another easy way to tame this beauty is to put your ranged weapon in your bag, follow the lower one and wait for it to get close to Transitus Shield (where it has the least of height from the ground), attack it with your fists and disengage before hitting the ground (no need to disengage for Pandas <3), wait for it to chase you to the ground and then you can easily tame it .

range hit it with
翼龙钉刺
then you should be able to tame it. Make sure that it is within taming range because wyvern sting does have a longer range than taming does.

After trying several times to get the higher one, I find the lower one to be the easiest also. Go to the north elevator, click on it when it flies by, then gauge your drop, so you won't die, hit with tranquilizer shot, disengage, when you hit the ground throw your ice trap, tame. This
is
the lesser of the 2 evils... lol

To tame the Spirit of the North...
I had to make a macro to find this creature (if you already know where it is then skip this part.)
macro -->" /target Spirit of the North" the picture says where it spawns above. The problem I had was trying to get it out of the sky without taking falling damage... Well, that didn't go as I had planned.
Being level 90 made it hard to not one shot it, so I used my Tranq shot while standing on highest point of that building. All was going well except when I waited for it to get in range and used my Tranq... the Spirit wanted to evade...
I finally was about to give up, then I realized I might as well try flying up to it and using Tranq in the air.
Finally, It noticed me and I fell down. I only lost half my health though, then boom. New pet.
Hope this helps. ^^

Step 1 Recruit mage friend
Step 2 Have mage spec into presence of mind level 15 talent (instant sheep)
Step 3 have mage cast slow fall/ presence of mind/ sheep
Step 4 Tame it on ground
NPCs do not take fall damage. Try to go for the lower one to avoid evade bugs.

I just got one of my own, they're quite difficult to tame because their patrol is almost entirely out of your 40 yard range, and the aforementioned comment about using the underside of one of the platforms causes them to evade bug. What I ended up doing was targeting the one closest to the ground, hover with my flying mount as low as possible to the ground while I could still reach it, and let off an auto-attack with a low-level bow, then toggled the auto-attack back off. I fell and lost about half my HP, but it came down to my level, and I was able to successfully tame it.
It took a bit of time to find a good spot, all told I was here for probably 30 minutes before getting it right.

If you have a 70 hunter like me, you'er better off trying to get the lower one. the higher one needs to be killed almost instantly and wait for it to spawn, but that's too hard to a 70, so you alternate option if to shoot the lower one while falling and then tame it after you survived the fall damage

I spent about two hours today trying some of the methods from comments here, including Weislet's trap method (the wyrm never spawned there for me) and Adorabull's spike method (couldn't for the life of me find the perfect spot on the spike that would let me land). I finally--almost accidentally--tamed him with my own method.
So, If you're level 90 or have the health/gear to survive a short fall, try this:
Go to 29,33 (just in front of the spike described in Adorabull's method). The lower wyrm has a large, circular patrol that passes over this spot (roughly 3 minutes full circle). From the ground, mount up and fly vertically just high enough to be in range of the wyrm when he flies over (you want as little height as possible to minimize fall damage). You should be roughly level with the top of the spike. When the wyrm is in range, fire off a Tranquilizing Shot. When you hit the ground, hit Tame Beast. Voilà! You have a new pet!
Hope this helps some folks.

In the southern part of the Nexus area i found a snake, where you could tap it with "tranq shot" without being too far in the sky. Hit escape to untarget it, so that you wont autohit the snake. (Dunno if it helped, but i deactivated autohit in the Interface/Combat menu) After i was falling i used disengage at <30 meters above ground to negate the deadly fall damage. The snake still followed me and i retargeted it and started the tame process. Some seconds later i was happy (and some Gold poorer though being smart enough to take every cloths off besides the bow. :) )

There's a pointy spike on the building that has the elevator. If you can manage to land right on top of it, the lower one will actually come close enough that you can tame it directly. No need to do the whole hit/fall/disengage/hopefullysurvive/tame strategy.

After reading all of the posts, the easiest way for any hunter is to track the beast as he flies and choose a spot where the ground is at a high point. Park between him and the ground so when you drop you do not die. When he flies overhead at 30-35 yards dismount and hit with a distracting shot. He will follow you to the ground and you can easily tame him. NOTE: for high level hunters- strip to the skin and use a very low level bow. He only has 9000 health points and dies very easily. Set your option to auto dismount when you fire the shot.

As a hunter the easiest way to tame this is that you fly up to the serpent, dismount and autoshoot / arcane shot or w/e skill of choice, aggro it in any case. Then just as you're about to hit the ground, you disengage (works like mage's blink, you take no fall damage) and tada! Then just tame beast. I got mine this way today.

There seem to be lots of effective ways to get this pet so I'll add mine just to offer more options.
First I had a problem with the tag shot and killing it by accident so I just grabbed my level 2 blunderbuss out of the bank (yes, I still had it) to use for tagging. Then I went to Gnomeregan and got the S.A.F.E Parachute and bound it to a convenient key.
Fly up to serpent, tag with a shot, pop parachute, tame when you hit bottom. Though I did name mine Pita. >.<

1. Unequip your weapon
2. Make sure you find your "Disengage" button
3. Hit the serpent with your fist, therefore be dismounted
4. Before you hit the ground, use "Disengage"
4.1 You might get a bit hurt but should not die depending where you executed this tactic
5. Tame

How to get this pet as fast as possible?
Note: There are 2 "Spirit of the North", one flying near the ground, another flying upper (under a platform)... And 1 of them has to be ALWAYS alive... That means if you kill both one respawns in no time...
1- Use your flying mount, kill the lower one
2- Go up, get a spot under the platform and kill the upper one

4- If it didn't work, just repeat, you don't neer to wait for respawns ;)

I just tamed this one on 1/25/14 On my level 72 Blood Elf hunter on Dalaran! It was really easy after I seen these comments. I got to the savest spot to tame it. When I dismounted I shot and then I was safely at a good area when I hit the ground I was at half health. I just hit tame and boom he is my pet. I named him "Ice"
Goodluck to all the hunters that want him. He is a real great pet to have!

A very fragile animal to get. Even after un-equipping my weapon and just hitting it with my bare fist, that one hit brought it down to about 1/3 health. And the timing has to be perfect. A couple of times after hitting it, I fell using 'Disengage' to avoid dying, looked up and saw that it had not successfully been aggro'ed. Finally tamed it on the fifth try.

Don't listen to anyone about the higher up one being easier. Fly next to the low one then tranq shot it, disengage when you are near the ground so you dont die from fall damage, drop your trap, tame and win. Simple and no evade or funny business. Very easy if you do it this way.

Just tamed at 5:45am CST, Durotan, very easy as an OP 90 hunter with engineering. Cloak with glider attached, un-equip ranged weapon, fly up to SotN, punch in face, glide to ground where SotN is waiting, tame. Hope this is helpful if any1 is still having issues.

Took 6 tries, kept either killing him, dying by falling and /or pet killed him.
Simple way:
1: Remove weapon
2: Melee attack
3. Disengage about 10 feet above ground
4: tame
5: got em!

Why make it so complicated
?
Only problem I Had as a 90 hunter was
not to kill him
while I aggro him.
Make it simple and easy is always the best choice :
Get naked
.
Completely naked
(shirts allowed)
Buy yourself a
Worn Shortbow
to
lower your DPS at the minimum
. (available at Undercity for example). You could also die from a fall and resurrect at the angel to gain the
Resurrection sickness
debuff and loose 75% of your attributes and damage done, that could help.
Find your Spirit of the north and get
right above him
.
Unmount and fire
an
arcane shot
or any other instant without dot.
Before landing and dying
pop your
Disengage
. For Engineers information : it might also work with a
Goblin glider
or a
Flexweave Underlay
. I had mine on a 496 back, and that item alone wasn't enough dps gain to one shot my mob (be carefull legendary back owners here). I don't know if that would reset the mob, 'cause I used Disengage at that point.
At that point the mob went really fast onto me so I had no combat reset, I guess it might work from really high (I was something like 100-150m high, hard to say precisely, but high enough to die from the fall).
Cast
your
Tame Beast
.
Done
, you're happy :).
I hope that will help you to tame that mob, or any other one that flies high and won't one-shot you during the fall (hello Ban'thalos)
(Edit : I see after posting this that Crimsonhead posted something equivalent, but with melee attack. if like me you failed 2-3 attempts (didn't melee touch him during the fall, so no aggro), I would recommend to buy an low lvl ranged weapon.)

While I was farming the Occulus on my 90 hunter for some Borean Leather for LW, I stumbled upon this guy, having never seen him before leveling through all the expansion years ago, I thought he looked pretty cool and thankfully beast lore said he was tamable.
I took the low flying one, and went to
29.33, 33.74
where there is a little spike that
you can land on
so I stood there and luckily he pathed within range for a tame. Unfortunately the beast ends up landing on the ground, but you can just jump off and disengage in time to avoid fall damage (it's non lethal anyway) and continue the tame there. I hadn't read any of these comments so no need for weapon swapping, glider using, ressurection sickness-ing :)
Happy taming hunters! Including a screenshot for reference on spike.

I had a hard time with taming the higher spawn point, while standing on the southern underside of the middle platform...was getting frustrated. I looked at the images here and saw someone standing on a spike to tame the lower spawn point and I was able to tame him that way, I named him Orochimaru!
Your mount will not land on the spike, so center yourself above it as best you can and trust that it will catch you when you dismount.

Easy Tame.. Dismount over the spike at 29.3,33.7, tranquilizing shot, jump to the ground, tame, done... on my lvl 90 Survival hunter.

Easy way to get the lower one is to fly near it. You then shoot tranq shot or some other attack wich does not hit hard. This will dismount you so you will have to be ready with disengage when close to the ground. The beast will then follow and NOT evade, so you will be able to tame it.

I was reading all the great methods and I found the simplest to be the best.
Find the one near the building along the mountain wall, scatter shot it from flying mount. Disengage before landing and tame.

If you kill the lower one he re-spawns on the ground at approximately coordinates 27.31, or on the ground below the platform closest to the Nexus (or at least it looks that way on your mini Map). Basically north of the first "A" in Coldarra on the map. You will be close to a lone tree and perhaps a Nexus Whelpling. Stay Closer to the spikes but still on the ground. I killed the lower one by dismounting in flight below him but not too far that my attacks were red (obviously) and attacking immediately after, taking minor fall damage. When he re spawns he will be close to the ground, freeze trap him, and tame him. Good Luck =)

Okay, so as a level 90 hunter i did this fairly simple, although it took awhile to figure out xD
After i killed the lower traveling one, I merely gave myself rez sickness, equipped a lower stat bow (in my case the only one i had was the Legendary) and i shot him without killing him, Froze him then tamed.

I tested out a taming theory just now, with the help of a nice undead priest (Morgual-Dragonblight, you really made my day! Thanks again!).
With Aspect of the Fox and Glyph of Tame Beast, I thought that maybe, just maybe, i could get the Spirit of the North without having to time a Disengage perfectly or kill and wait for a respawn or equip a low-level bow because I didn't want to go looking for one or take the chance of messing up and having to wait for another respawn.
I stood on top of one of the tower corner pieces and asked the priest very nicely if they would Levitate me. As soon as the Spirit started coming close -- not directly in front of me, closer to ten or eleven o'clock in comparison -- i stepped off the ledge. Once I was in range for Tame Beast, I hit Aspect of the Fox and started the tame.
This was kind of where my ingenious plan came a little loose. I aggroed the Spirit, who attacked me and broke the Levitate, sending me plummeting to the ground. I landed hard (like 10~15% HP left, and 15 is being really generous in my assessment) and the impact broke the tame, obviously.
But the Spirit followed me to the ground instead of evade glitching away! I was able to restart and complete the tame with no issue, even while the Spirit was eating my face. (this is at 90, I doubt it would go as well on an at-level hunter)
While my original idea didn't work out as planned, mixing multiple different sets of instructions and adding in the new Aspect got rid of a lot of the things troubling me, namely the very high chance of death if your Disengage timing is wrong and the also very high chance of killing the Spirit when aggroing it because even ungeared 90s could fart on a 70 like this and kill it stone dead. Using Aspect of the Fox allows you to pull the Spirit with Tame Beast; Using Levitate (or probably any other Slow Fall-like spell or item effect) shortens the distance between you and the ground, so while you still fall hard when it breaks, it likely won't be enough to kill you.
Honestly, had I not panicked and forgotten where my buttens were, it was very likely I might have been able to start the tame the moment i got in range and complete it just before the Spirit could attack me, or just after and before I hit the ground to break it.
While this plan may require some outside help if you don't have access to a Noggenfogger Elixir, Borean Tundra is still a leveling area with a decent number of questing characters milling about. I managed to get Morgual to help just by doing a /who search and then whispering them to ask, and while I did offer to run them through the highest-level instance they could zone into and give them all the loot as payment (different realms), they declined. I plan on paying it forward as best I can~
But if you're hunting down awesome hunter pets, you're likely already at max level, and can bribe lowbies with free loot and exp for a single spell if it comes right down to it. Good luck!

Shenanigans are not necessary to tame this.
Macro:

Fly directly below the lower-altitude snake, so that you are just in range of it, and press your macro button. Fall to the ground, tame, win.

Just tamed it quite easily with AotF + Tame + Disengage. With Aspect of the Fox, you're able to begin a Tame cast while in the air. Either have some kind of slow-fall effect or just Disengage before you hit the ground - the latter will break your cast but your autoattack will still be off and the Spirit will be aggro'd to you and follow you down to the ground. Then just tame like normal!

Hi ALL, I saw the Serpent and had to add it to my collection. I'm at lvl84 and I killed it a few times before reading all the comments posted here. This is what I did: I landed on the ice spike at
29.3 - 33.8
. This was not as easy as it sounds; it took numerous attempts to get it right. As it came closer, I 'engaged' it. It slowly came into range and I selected 'Tame'. It fell to ground; I jumped off the spike and 'disengaged' so to minimize my damage before hitting the ground. I then re-engaged by selecting 'Tame' and voila! It's now mine! Thanks to ALL that posted before me; the info was very helpful!

The spirit of the north is kind of difficult but if you have tranquilizing shot you can aggro it without doing damage to it but it is better to do it at level 90 to 100 the fall is not that bad but it is best to make sure you don't die is to have a parachute or before you go after it have a rylak use is ability up draft which slows both you and the pet's falling speed.
Happy hunting

Go to 28,29 and look up. They are way up in the air, not where the purple ones are below. There are two of these. Unfortunately they are yellow meaning you have to attack them to tame them. If you are lvl 100 even a punch will one shot them.
To pull without killing something as a hunter make a macro like so:
/cast Distracting Shot
/Stopattack
Without the "Stopattack" in the macro your auto shot will one shot your tame.
PS
I hear tranq shot can also be used instead of distracting shot but I used distracting shot and it worked perfectly.

2016, June 03, I started by getting close to the lower one while on a flying mount, like melee range close. After a couple of deaths due to having to shift action bars and mistypings that led to splatty death syndrome...I put everything I needed on the same action bar, and succeeded in four easy steps. Read all the steps through before trying this at home, kiddos:
1. Dismounted while it was pathing over the valley floor (someone had cleared the mobs down there, so I knew I had a safe window to land and tame in; you can clear them out beforehand yourself),
2. Hit the Spirit with an immediate tranquilizer shot,
3. Disengaged a second or two from the ground to save myself from splatting, and
4. Started taming right away.
(Note that by starting at melee range closeness, you'll avoid accidentally Disengaging out of aggro pulling range.)
Did this at lvl 75, so I had plenty of hp for the beastie to nom on while I was taming 'er. And now for the really hard part: What to name my new beastie?
:-)

Taming one of these most painlessly without resorting to falling from up on high, writing macros and so on:
There's two of them, one circling too high to tame from the ground, and the other way up higher still. The lower is least painful. Head for the southern-most building with an elevator; it's fairly close to the Transitus Shield flightpoint.
When facing the elevator, there is a tall, very pointy blue spike sticking up out of either of the front corners of the building. You can fly up and actually stand on top of these.
Head for the one to the left of the elevator; the one to the right might work as well, but I used the left one (still facing the elevator.) When standing on the spike, just wait for the Serpent to patrol into range, then hit tame beast.
It might go into evade mode, so if that happens just jump off the spike and tame again to claim your translucent beastie!
All done!
:)

I found I was able to tame the lower serpent with relative ease by switching over to survival, talenting into ranger's net,and just snaring it with when it finally made its way past the ledge of one of the buildings at roughly 30.85,20.36 .As soon as it was caught in the net I jumped down so it didn't evade and was able to tame it.No glider necessary to survive the fall, though it will certainly make things easier.

7.2 tamed.
not need to take off any gears.
simply use this macro:
/cast Counter Shot
/stopcasting
I tamed the lower one starting mid way between the serpent and the ground,
press the macro, drop on the ground with 30% health left. The serpent follows you to the ground,
you can either tame with or without trap.
The top one is doable but you have to position where you left with goblin glider, if you land too far away, the serpent won't follow.
Good luck!

As of Legion Hunters no longer have a Tranquilizing Shot and any other skill you may use to aggro will be followed by an auto-attack. There isn't a single spot where you can stand in taming reach, and even a naked level 100 character dismounting and hitting it with bare hands or a crap ranged weapon will kill it in one hit. Not to worry though, there's a little trick you can do:
First off, create a macro with the following command:
/cast Concussive Shot *or any other non-damage spell*
/stopattack
Stand on top of it > dismount > use the macro > disengage when you're about to hit the ground to avoid damage > tame > profit :)

Grab a friend who is a vengeance tank (Draesh-Hyjal US horde side is me and I have my stuff setup for it and would be glad to help (see me @ZathTanks on Twitch/Twitter and Zathaen on IG/Facebook, hit me up, glad to help) and they need a macro and a little skill at controlling falling angle and stop/starting gliding!
their macro:
/target Spirit of the North
/cast Torment
/stopattack
DH positions above the pet, drops off mount and taunts wiht that as they go by. Control fall to land near him so he doesn't reset. ONce you and the stabby shooty outdoorsy class are together, freeze the pet
Demon hunter, please range the pet and drop aggro!
Now tell your Stabby Shooty Outdoorsey Class friend to hit Tame Beast when aggro is dropped. :D
The pet will be theirs!

Trust me -- this is the easiest method thus far.
First, make sure you are a hunter with "disengage" unlocked in your spellbook and you can use flying mounts.
Second, find the lower Spirt of the North. Using a flying mount, fly slightly above it and ahead of it. Dismount. Shoot the Spirit of the North as you fall to pull aggro. Before you hit the ground, use your "disengage" ability to avoid fall damage. Once you land, begin the tame. Boom! Spirit of the North is now your pet.

If you are trying to tame this on a level 120 hunter it can be slightly frustrating. Go to the second platform, stand in the southern loop under the platform and kill it, proceed to the top part of the platform right above where you just stood. It will respawn right in that area just above the platform and sink through the platform. Drop your ice trap when it respawns 28.3, 32.8.

This is rough to get on a high level character if you're trying to tame it as a hunter - if possible, grab a low level friend to help and party-sync your level lower to tag it and get it to come closer. It'll drop to the ground, so be prepared to go down. I got mine by standing on a building to the south. It's very square and has an elevator. Stand at the crest and shoot when the spirit comes around, then stop attacking and get to the ground where it'll have fallen. From there, ice trap, tame, and you're set.
(Took a friend and I a while to figure this one out...)

Very easy to get, even with a good equipped level 50 hunter (after level squish). Just dismiss pet, jump on your mount, fly next to the Spirit. Use "Tranquilizing Shot". Use goblin glider while falling and glide to the ground in small circles. The Spirit will follow you and then you can tame it easily.

Not actually so easy to get as of the latest patches if you're higher level. Tranquilizing shot killed it in one shot for me (lvl 56 post squish). You cannot use any skills while mounted, so I eventually had to dismount midair, use arcane torrent, and goblin glider down (could have also used disengage). It also does NOT keep its name. I agree with several folks that have mentioned bringing a lower level friend to help, reducing your dps to a minimum, or making a macro so it doesn't get hit by anything except tranq might help.
Good luck!

Easiest way to tame this at current patch:
Target and fly up to Spirit of the North. Just start taming. When you do so it will aggro and you will fall. You and it will drop to the ground. I simply disengaged right before hitting the ground. Then hit tame again. Was able to tame 2 in less than 2 minutes. I think you could probably use a glider still but I'm not sure how long they would stay aggro'd if you are in the air gliding and they are on the ground.

Taming at level 60.
Step 1: Open Game Menu and go to Interface>Controls>check Auto Dismount in Flight
Step 2: Fly to /way Borean Tundra 30 33 (does not have to be exactly there, I just like having a clear place to land.)
Step 3: Create this macro and place it on your Action Bar:
#showtooltip
/cast concussive shot
/stopautoshot
/stopattack
Step 4: Wait for the Spirit to fly near you. Again, you don't have to go to that exact way point. I just like it there because there's no rock crevices to fall into.
Step 5: Once it's near you, use your macro. Disengage before you hit the ground or take the fall damage.
Step 6: Tame
There's no need to kill yourself or get a low level friend as long as you use that macro. Concussive Shot does no damage.

Travel to:

Then move to:

Wait for serpent to appear and I used Concussive Shot then carefully make your way down and tame.

Easy way to tame it for hunters:
Target it and use this macro in mid air:
#showtooltip
/stopattack
/use Concussive Shot
/stopattack
After that, you and the Spirit of the North will fall, use
Disengage
right before touching the ground to avoid death, you both fall at the same speed. It will "start" patrolling back to its position, but it will begin from the floor where you are, so you use
Tame Beast
from the floor and it is a free capture.
