Nobbel the Noble, League of Champions
Our two man team for taking down Reliquary of Souls in Black Temple every week:
Item level 371 Blood Death Knight, 390 Elemental Shaman.
Strategy: This is the single hardest fight for us and many in Black Temple for the simple reason of needing constant interrupts on the Essence of Desire.
Phase 1: The Essence of Suffering is very simple, we just DPS him down, no strategy needed.
Phase 2: The Essence of Desire is the real challenge here. She casts a spell called "Spirit Shock" that confuses you for 5 seconds and deals a fair amount of damage - it MUST be interrupted! The real kicker is when she successfully casts it not only are you put out of commission for 5 seconds, but she subsequently casts it faster with each successful cast. This means that a smooth run can quickly turn into a wipe that you have no way of stopping.
We've found the best ways to deal with this are:
I cast army of the dead, and she uses her fire elemental right at the start of her phase, then I cast raise dead and she uses her earth elemental at around 50%. The reason for doing his is if she does manage to slip some spirit shocks by you she will start casting it at other nearby targets, giving you a quick chance to recover. Blow everything you've got to get her down.
Also she has an aura that causes you damage as you deal damage, so be careful and heal yourself accordingly.
Phase 3: The Essence of Anger is another east fight, he doesn't do anything special - if you make it to him you're home free!

This, more than any other fight before it, is the one that makes a solo attempt all but impossible. You NEED a Warlock's Curse of Tongues on the second phase, as well as at least TWO players who have interrupts. (Otherwise you're trying to interrupt a spell with a 1 second cast time, that is cast quite often.)
Cannot express how frustrating it is to barely scrape by the first four bosses solo (well, dual boxed with a 70 shaman for gear), only to get absolutely stonewalled by fight mechanics on the fifth. Spare yourself the anguish and find a Warlock and one other who is interested in picking up some neat gear for Transmogrification.
Dont try this solo at 90 as warrior with Second Wind talent, you will be stuck in phase 2 without dying :\
The name's been changed?
I was successfully able to solo phase two of RoS as a 460 Unholy Death Knight in DPS gear using the strategy laid out in
The basics of the strat are as phase two is beginning place your ghoul under RoS. As soon as the second phase begins, outbreak the boss while commanding your pet to attack. You then move your pet (be sure to set it to passive) to the bottom left corner of the ramp while you move your character up the ramp and around the left corner.
If positioned correctly RoS will ping pong back and forth between you and your pet when you are spirit shocked but will never actually reach your pet. This lets you attack RoS for 3-5s at a time before being spirit shocked. It takes a little while but it does allow this fight to be soloed.
A few DK specific tips: AMS will allow you to eat a few spirit shocks, AMZ will not. I have to test if desecrated ground will allow you to negate spirit shock.
Soloed as 90 Fury Warrior ilvl 485
Second Wind talent is essential and you'll want a healing pot for when you get really low in phase 2. Interrupt everything you can and use Bladestorm for it's immunity to stuns etc.
As of 11/30/12, a hotfix has been issued - Essence of Desire only casts Spirit Shock every 10 seconds, and the debuff only lasts 4 seconds. I was able to two-man her with a shadow priest and enhancement shaman.
Pro-tip for all you balance druids soloing this...make sure you pop bear/HotW before you run out of mana in P2...I'm not well geared but frenzied regeneration kept me alive long enough to down her.
Edit: Almost forgot...Cenarion Ward and The Moonbeast glyph help a ton here for self heals...never went below 80% HP in Boomkin form.
Monks careful, I one-shotted myself with Touch of Death on Desire (Aura of Desire) ;)
I died the first time so I figured maybe it was a good chance to see what my little
could do. If you don't have one and like to solo old world bosses as DPS then I highly suggest getting your
. He tanked Reliquary like a champ and even gave me a sec to pull out and bandage when it was needed around Phase 2.
Of course you need to hold back a little on the power here and there or he loses aggro but then he'll usually taunt them back soon enough.
Very easy now Spirit Shock is a 10second CD. Stressed so much I couldn't solo it (soloing is basically all I do) and it was fine. 485 ILvl SPriest. On second phase, if you glyph for mindbender, wait 3 seconds and pop your pet and use fade. Your pet will take the first spirit shock. You'll gain agro a few seconds later and she will then Spirit Shock you, silence it and rinse and repeat. Didn't take me even a minute to down her, pop'd Desperate Prayer at 40% from the Aura of Desire.
How to solo / 90 Hunter 480 iLevel / 5.1
RoS is now trivial for a hunter (and basically every class).
Hold on DPS cooldowns for P2, interrupt Spirit Shock. I use a ferocity-spec'd gorilla for the extra interrupt.
WARNING!: Any trying to solo this at level 90 need to see this! Do NOT try to burn the second phase boss (The Essence of Desire). Her aura makes you take 50% of all damage you cause against her, meaning if you do what I tried to do for my first three attempts, you'll just kill yourself. It's confusing because you start taking a lot of damage halfway through and you figure you just have to burn her, but in reality she never does a lot of damage at level 90. You just have to maintain your health while you slowly kill her.
EDIT: As of 5.4.8, this still applies. I have a 559 hunter and I still need to watch my HP when fighting her.
Very easy as a blood dk. use death strike and rune tap to outheal phase two boss essence of desire. Other two phases are nothing, did not even scratch me.
P2 she does damage back to you that you do to her but easy to outheal as blood dk
Soloed this with my 85 blood DK in 417 ilevel gear including Jade Forest greens and auction house blues.
This fight happens in 3 phases. You fight one of the three heads each phase. In between phases the heads will move to the back of the room and be enclosed in boney fingers while ghosts spawn that attack you.
The first phase is trivial just DPS it down until it flees.
The second phase, Essence of Desire, is the hardest because you get hit with
which does DOT damage and confuses you for 5 seconds. She also has
Aura of Desire
which reflects damage you do back to you and decreases your maximum mana over time. Be careful here and try not to go all out on DPS. If you take too much damage try sticking to Death Strike so you're at least healing while doing damage.
The third phase is also easy. Just DPS it down.
Here's the video:
Soloing this as a warrior isn't hard, just time consuming. Phase 1 and 3 are just ezmode dps spanks. Phase two, her aura causes you to take half-damage for all the damage you do to her. Making it very easy to kill yourself. Thankfully we have Second Wind. So you beat her (and yourself) until Second Wind is proc'ing you back to health. You pace yourself with mini-beatdowns until Second Wind procs again until she drops. During all this she will disorient you. A lot. So you beat her and wait out disorients while second wind heals you. It is just a matter of perseverance overall.
For any Priest who may be interested to know - This fight was the only one at this point with any real danger of death. Mostly the first phase. My shield broke very very early in the first phase, not so much in the second phase, but the last was a breeze. Mind Spiking the adds and Halo'ing the rest took care of them real easy. Good thing is, healing as well as damage was increased so my Shadowpriest flash heals practically 1 healed my entire health. 491 Shadowpriest.
Would just like to add my own information! Super easy as a Lvl. 90 BM Hunter (iLvl 488).
Both Phase 1 & 3 are simply, virtually no damage taken, its basically just a race against your previous kill time. Fixate in Phase 1 can be a little annoying, but I have Spirit Bond so I didn't have to do anything, the passive heal was enough.
Phase 2 I used my Spirit Beast, Hutia to tank her - the great part of being a Hunter is that the pet's attacks do not count as damage you do - so you can spam those 100k kill commands without worrying about getting damage done to you; also I casted Spirit Mend on myself before I did burst damage, to balance out the damage I was taking.
Thankfully Blizzard has twisted this boss a little, you dont get endless lost control.
As Arm Warrior, Second Wind is recommended.
Phase 1, just DPS
phase 2, this is the time consuming part. use your whatever skill to atk him until your HP drops below 30%, then just auto-attack or control your attack until it dies. Be careful of your bleeding effect like
and your attacks, even just your auto attack, if it keeps critting on the boss, especially if you are using 2h weapon, its damage can be greater than your Second Wind and kill you.
phase 3, just beat the crap outta it
Soloed as a 90 BM hunter with no issues. Phase 1, just dps'ed with no problems. Phase 2, the boss brought me down to around 40% health from the dps I was doing, but my spirit bond healed me back up almost straight away. Phase 3, used my stampede and burned. No issues at all. :)
Good luck to all that want to solo this boss!
Warriors: Using Execute in Phase 2 is not advised when soloing....
For phase 2...
Druids: Yera's Gift (lvl 30 talent) will negate most of the damage you get back from Rake so just let it tick and renew it when it runs out. Kinda slow going. Assuming Balance and Resto have some kind of weak-ish DoT they can use, this should work as well.
Pet Owners: Spam your pet attacks since it doesn't do any damage back at you. I popped Dire Beast and Stampede, and Phase 2 went faster than Phase 1.
On my ilvl 474 warrior I switched to Prot spec, stayed in Battle Stance, and equiped the
glyph which makes SS dispel one magic effect on its target each time it is used, making it very good for getting rid of the boss' absorb shield during the 2nd phase.
With Second Wind as my regen talent, I wasn't afraid to dps away with Devastate, SS and even the odd Revenge, because as soon as i got disoriented for 5 seconds by the boss' Spirit Shock ability my Second Wind healed me back up to 35% health. Still took a wee while to do but was easily manageable.
10/14/14. Patch 6.0.
Phase 2 is no longer an issue. 90 Mut Rogue. DPS P1. DPS P2. DPS P3. Quick and painless.
Absolutely love the Sinistar reference during the Essence of Anger phase.
In the Patch 6.1, there are now 3 pets that drop from Reliquary of Souls in the Black Temple Raid listed below:
can anyone confirm if the boss can drop more than one pet at a time? thank you in advance
Can anyone confirm that does all of the 3 pets drop from this boss. Or is there a trick here? Or is it the old simple way: loot the boss. Since the heads swap so I thought each can be looted separately. Which made me wonder... All I know it drops in the Black Temple 25 man raid from the Burning Crusade expansion.
For those that are farming only this boss for whatever reason (pets, xmog, etc.):
You will have to kill
High Warlord Naj'entus
to unlock two doors. Once that's done you should find yourself in The Sanctuary of Shadows. You'll want to go to the far end of the room toward your left. (If you're looking at the map, head towards the words Den of Mortal Delights.) If you've found your way to the correct level you should be in The Halls of Anguish floor. When you look at your map you should see two bosses noted on it - one in red almost directly behind you (
) and one in purple with blue "rivers." Head to the boss at the bottom of the map (the purple one). You have arrived at your destination.
Reminds me of a trilobite, or some cepholopod type thing, in between the faces.
