This mob is spawned when someone talks to one of the four Cultist Engineers that are trying to repair the broken Necrotic Shards.

I did this quest to day after collecting 8 runes, you use speak to one of the channeling NPCs by a Damaged Shard. They will turn into the Shadow of Doom with roughly 120k health, and hits for around 1k, and mindflays for around 200-500 per tick. I soloed them easy as an Elemental Shaman.
He dropped Breastplate of Undead Slaying which is part of the Blessed Battlegear, a well as 30 Runes, and a random Item of Common Quality.
Breastplate is as follows:
1450 Armor
48 Str
51 Sta
40 haste
1 of 4 of a set piece.

The Drop Rate for a chest item must not be very high. All I've managed to get off of these are the 30 runes and some coinage. Anyone else having this problem?

I managed to pull one(later found out that it was someone's but he had died), as a lock you can solo them quite easily if you have curse of exhaustion, besides most of the times people help you out, did not get a drop from this guy beside the runes, I've killed 2 rares which did drop a leg piece of the set.

Note that if there is more than one summoned and unclaimed, they will aggro together and, oddly enough, share threat between them until they are pulled apart.
In addition, if they are linked like this, if one of them resets, they will all reset.

At first when a place is under attack from the Scourge, there will be a
Necrotic Shard
and various undead mobs surrounding it. When you kill these mobs, the
Necrotic Shard
will lose a small amount of it's health (15/3038 hp, meaning you need 203 kills to destroy it). When it reaches zero, it will turn into a
Damaged Necrotic Shard
and 4
Cultist Engineers
will start channeling a ritual. By talking to one of these and using 8
Necrotic Runes
you will summon a
Shadow of Doom
. Be sure to spam your instant abilities on him as many people tend to try tagging him to their own group.

They are very easy to kite, BUT you must be careful not to pull them too far from the Necrotic Shard. If they are kited too far away, they will evade and reset, and you will lose your tap on them.
What you can do is kite them in a circle around the crystal, so that they stay at roughly the same distance from it all the time. It is very easy to kill them by doing this.

I'm not sure Blizzard have properly thought this out. Why not tag the mob for whoever summoned it? The last few spawns I've seen of these guys have been instantly ninja'd by everyone except the person who actually paid the 8 runes! Utterly ridiculous.
The whole series of world events have been nothing but a disappointment for me. Zombies are basically an excuse to grief and kill key NPCs, being turned into a zombie and then nailed by a guard requires a corpse run and a repair bill payment, and the icing on the cake is other people ninjaing these mobs after you work your butt off getting the crystal down.
Sigh.

This is THE single most ridiculosly annoying mob I have ever tried to solo, in my entire life.. holy *!@#.. I mean.. I play a balance druid, mostly wearing s3 healing gear, so my damage output is fairly high.. However with the incredibly short range it can go from the center, without evading, there's just no way I can ever get it dps'ed down fast enough to avoid respawns.. And 1 respawn is no problem, even 2 I can deal with.. But when all of a sudden it sends out 3 mobs plus the respawns, then I get in a lotta trouble.. And dont even get me started on the fear.. that's just such an obvious attempt to $%^&block for soloing ..

One thing I'd like to point out. These guys drop 30 runes, but either it looks like 1 rune, or its not very obvious on the rolling screen. It looks like you're rolling on another rune. Make sure to arrange how to roll on these 30xrune stacks before you kill them, especially if you are with randoms (you may want to use master loot even)

I feel it's worth mentioning that if you only kill 3 of the Shadows of Doom and leave the 4th Engineer alone, 3 more Engineers will spawn in their place and you can get 3 more chances at the loot. Upon killing the next Engineer, however, the necrotic circle will despawn.

They have a fear effect, based completely off proximity, and not cast on the highest threat.
As a boomkin that was 2 manning it, i used my trees as a buffer against it.

I’ve spent a good few hours fighting these mobs now, and although it is usually a war over the tags on the Shadows I had a nice experience this morning. For some strange reason the crystal despawned after only one of the Shadows were defeated. Most of the other players grinding there left, but I (undead warrior) stayed behind along with an alliance druid and hunter. While I cleared the remaining trash the alliance guys spoke to one of the cultists and picked the fight with the Shadow. When I looked up I saw they were being owned by it, so I charged in and helped them finish it off.
Using emotes we then agreed on helping each other with the two last ones, so they tagged the first one, we fought it together, and then I tagged the last one and they helped me defeat it.
I think it’s a shame cooperation between the factions isn’t promoted more, since this was actually a fun, different experience. Especially considering the abuse the horde players were screaming at each other while squabbling over the tags…

I’ve noticed some druids have been taunting them from other players, running out of the circle, forcing them to evade reset, which allows the druid to tag them shortly after with an instant cast spell.
Caught one doing this last night to other players and decided to beat him at his own game- waited for him to get one low health, used demon form taunt to pull it off of him, evaded it, then demon charged after it reset, tagging it as mine.
Made sure to do a few /gloat, /lol emotes at him as I killed it. :p

Completely wrong...
These elites are ONLY tapped, by the person who summoned it, or the party that summoned it.
I've checked this time and time again, and had the player who 'said' they summoned it, to check their bags, and they actually didn't pay to summon it. But, i'm sure bugs will occur in that 1/10,000 case, when 2 people actually do spend 8 runes each... but that is the expection rather than the rule.
Only the person who PAYS 8 Runes to summon this mob, is the one/party to get the credit. Although, a tank can drag him and reset him, and reacquire the credit, but that is a different story.
From what I've seen, the rare's drop the legs/chest (99%+ chance), and the elites (dooms) have a 5-10% drop chance for those same items.

Fairly easy to solo. Feral druid, Kara gear and a couple Merc pieces.
When he casts Mind Flay, Bash it asap when it's up. Mangle, Lacerate, FF, Roar. Switch to cat for a second to apply all bleed dots. When I got to about 1/4-1/2 health, I rooted the Shadow, ran away, healed up and applied hots. Repeat. Only had to heal twice.
I was very surprised the two Alliance didn't gank at first... Probably because they had their own Shadow to deal with. When I tagged a second mob and got it to 25%, then of course they killed me and took the mob. *fumes* I knew I shoulda rolled on a PVE server. Lol. >.>

When summoning one of these today, it seemed to be tagged to our group automatically. Another player attempted to tag it multiple times, and we had not attacked it once; it was still tagged to my group. No idea if this was a recent hot fix or if I'm imagining things.

Fairly hard to solo as an affliction lock (I'm in full BT gear, 56/0/5 specced), I recommend taking both health pots and health stones, as well as waiting for death coil to be off cooldown.
Hit with haunt, full row of dots, and drain tank. You'll have to refresh siphon, I let agony fall off if I'm at 60% health or less.
Use nightfall procs at that same 60% mark, and dark pact/life tap often when you're about 60% so you don't get low on health and oom.
Haunt should basically be either casting or on cooldown the entire fight, you use it as much as possible since your main burst heal (death coil, and HS/pot being others)

Solo'd this as a resto druid.
Cleared a path through the undead in the area, and out of curiosity, disrupted his ritual. (During a dead hour, so there was no alliance to gank me) I died the first few times, but I formulated a solid strategy to downing one effectively. Although, it took a long time. I'm not sure if any other class can solo this, but I aggroed him to outside of the circle of undead, and rooted him. He has a Mind Flay, a Fear, and he hit me (at 2k armor) for 2k. However, his fear and mind flay's max range were shorter than my wraths and starfires, so it was easy to chain root him and spam wraths regularly. (after the first five deaths) If you don't watch where you're going, he may fear you into the group of undead.
I solo'd him later, too, when there were no undead around, (again, during a dead hour) and it was even easier to manage.
For any other casting druids that wanna give it a try, it's easy. Keep him outside the circle (but close enough for him to not reset) and chain root him while spamming wrath. If any adds get on, keep him rooted and take care of the adds. Because I'm rest, though, the adds weren't much of an issue, I'd just heal through them. Max range for wraths and starfires is the only way to do this -- if you don't, you'll be in range for his fear and you'll likely run into more adds.
Hope this helped anyone. ^^

this is just a guesstimate...but i believe the epic chests have a 10%-25% chance of dropping.
Leather chest drops most often.
Plate chest drops almost as much as cloth.
Cloth robe drops every once in a while...lesser drop rate than plate
Mail Hauberk has the LOWEST form of drop rate i have EVER SEEN.

These can be soloed as a warrior provided that you have decent (t5+) grade tank-gear. Your spec doesn't matter, I did them as Arms without too much hassle but you will have it much more easier when you're def-specced.
With a bit of practice you can quite easily guess the upcoming mindflay and spell reflect it. Keep 5 sunders up, stay in def-stance, bash all the missed mindflays and just keep spamming revenge/shield slam.

as a boomkin (
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Darksorrow&n=Zpa
) i ALMOST soloed these 2 times...the point is not wether u can kill it,its wether u dont pull it too far away(reset bugged that was my 2nd try) the 1st try i was in blasted lands and 2 hordes are trying to 2man (tauren fury war and ud disc priest) and it wasnt going good so i decide to help them and we kill it.i summon the shadow and solo it to 10%(had 100% hp and 30% mana left)then the 2 hordes decide that hey he helped us we should kill him and take his shadow to show our thanks...nice guys
the shadows mind flay wen not in range but for extremely low damage (500 per tick but i resisted 300 so only 600 dmg over 3 secs) that i was able to heal trough with rejuvenation

I would strongly suggest against interrupting/countering/stunning/etc. the mind flays. The shadows hit me - a ret pally with 3pc t4, ~8k armor - for ~1800 each hit, but the mind flay only ticked on me for about 217, meaning it was a lot less painful to just soak up the mind flay and keep him from hitting me two or three times than it was to stop it.
Some notes on kiting: It's incredibly easy for anything with a snare to kite these. I would suggest a group of two, one melee to hold aggro, and one ranged dps with a snare to slow it down. The way to do it is for the melee to hold aggro and kite it around, waiting out of melee range for it to start the mind flay, when you run in and unload everything you can before it finishes. Once it's over, you back out again and resume kiting, while the caster keeps it snared. It takes a bit, but it's a lot easier than trying to simply go toe-to-toe with them. I followed this strategy with an arcane mage - slow is a godsend - and we easily soloed all four shadows, even though the mage was in mostly pre-70 gear.

Soloed as a prot pally. Takes about 10 minutes to kill one, and its actually easier if you fight him and one or two other mobs with Blessing of Sanctuary up. The mana restoration is excellent with just BoSanc, and you can kill him quicker using SoVeng.
I was in Kara level gear with the T5 badge chest and legs.

This is easily soloed by an Arcane Specced Mage. all you need is the spell "slow".
you will kite the mob with "Slow" and use instants and an occassional channeled / 1.5-3.5sec casts. the easiest way to kite it is to clear a path into it, then kite it AROUND the undeads. else it will evade.
Will take some time doing this but it ensures you 30x Necrotic Runes and maybe if your lucky a chestpiece of the undead slaying gear :)

Fairly easily soloable as a meta-specced Warlock. You'll struggle with any other spec.
Essentially you want to pull the shadow to the outskirts of the camp (careful, very short evade leash). All you really need to do is have your Felguard tank him while you keep up immolate/corruption/coa and health funnel frequently. You can nuke imbetween reapplying DoTs and health funneling, just don't pass your felguard in threat. If you get adds, just meta+immo aura and reapply dots to the shadow. Fel Synergy and immo aura should heal the Felguard pretty well. When it gets sub 20% you can just pop meta and nuke it down to save time.

Feral druid solo strategy:
Bear form is the best here, as for most feral elite solos. Clear a path to the summoner dude/shadow of doom. Summon the shadow or pull if already summoned. As was mentioned in other posts, it's best to fight these outside the circle of adds. As a feral druid fight, you don't necessarily need to circle the group/kite it around. Use mangle and maul to fight this guy. If you pull an add or two, kill them first, as they get quite annoying.
If you pull more than one/two adds, run away and let them reset so you can re-pull. Now on to the fight with the shadow. Keep on mangling and mauling away till he gets you to about 66% of your health (or a higher percentage if you have less health than 13-15k in bear). When you get to this amount of health, bash him. Now, if you are a good feral, you have 2/2 infected wounds, so his movement is reduced to 50%. Try to make sure you mangle right before you stun him so you have a full 15 sec. (~10 after the bash) After you bash, run away while casting rejuv and lifebloom. Right when the lifebloom global CD goes away, stop and cast a full-fledged Healing Touch. The shadow should not be to you yet because it is still moving at 50%.
Rinse and repeat this process. Do the maul/mangle until your bash cooldown is over or wait a little longer if you still have over 66% health. This was done in mostly season 3 armor with a piece of s4 and s2 and a s2 weapon, so if you have lower gear, you may need to tweak to process to be safe, and have a few health/mana combo pots just in case. In this case, I used no pots or even the bear rejuv.

Just thinking back to when i was a 70 ret pally and i was trying to solo this as the knuckle-head i am. Whenever i was in a group the shadow of doom would drop 30 or so runes for ONE member ....not split it up...i guess my luck was sucking because the whole time i was out there i never got 30 or so runes, i had to farm them when my friends were getting them off 1 mob and i was getting them off like 10-15 mobs.....30 RUNES FOR ONE PERSON!
Edit:Took out some words
