I would love to know who Anthony Ray Stark was; why is he memorialized here? Is Rousch his (no longer needed) WoW character? I visit this gravesite anytime I'm in the immediate area, the nature and execution of this little scene moves me deeply.

According to a blue post by Drysc:
"It's an in-game memorial for a friend of one of the developers. "

I never noticed this til recently, has it always been here? I kneeled beside him and took a few screenshots, the developer must have wanted others to help pay respect, and or honor his friends passing =)

From Thottbot:
"While I would prefer to let the memorial speak for itself, it would seem that there are those, who will not allow that, and prefer to make up stories to confound the gullible. So, let me set the record straight.
Tony never worked for Blizzard (in fact, he was a mortgage broker), and he didn't die in a car accident.
I met Tony Stark (that was indeed his real name, the fact that it's Iron Man's secret identity is a coincidence) several months before he died. We both hung out at the same cigar store. While we didn't get to know each other well enough to be friends, I liked him and saw him several times a week. We got together at the cigar store on Tuesday nights to play WOW with a group of people and smoke cigars. Some of those people worked for Blizzard, and were friends of Tony's.
Rousch was Tony's main, and when Tony died he was somewhere in the mid 40's. Since that was Tony's first ever character, he was hardly one of the first to try a dwarf.
Tony died while doing something he loved, which was scuba diving. It was later determined that something went wrong with his heart. (The truth in this case is more dramatic than the made up stories. As we all know, that happens sometimes.)
I was touched to see that some of Tony's friends at Blizzard went to the trouble of arranging the memorial in the game to him. It was added in a patch a few months after his death. He was a kind, cheerful guy, who was always ready to help out someone in need. We all miss him.

I played WoW for almost a year, and some people don´t seem to understand the kind of bonds you make with other beings in this awesome, fantastic game.
This is a proof of this kind of bonds, the definitive tribute for a friend, for a game companion... Really, reading this touched my very heart... What an awesome proof of friendship, respect & care
I salute and send my respects for the one who seems this as a great way to salute his gone friend, and wherever he is, if he could know this, he sure is proud of his group of friends...

I found this NPC today while herbing on my horde and like many others wondered who he was and what he was doing there.
After finding this thread and reading who he is it touched my heart. I knew there were two "monuments" to people who had passed away,
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=23618
and
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=24727
but I didnt know about this one.
I think it proves Blizzard have a lot of heart and they really are sweet people.
Bravo Blizzard and Light and Love to Tony's family.

Blizzard seems to have a history of putting memorials in for players, employees, or friends. So far I've found seven (feel free to point it out if you spot one I've missed).
In Hillsbrad there is
Rousch
, the character of Anthony Ray Stark (yes, real name) who passed away in 2005 in a scuba accident. He has no quest, but he stands in front of a grave marker and will /kneel and /salute it from time to time. He is friendly to both factions.
Ahab Wheathoof
and his dog
Kyle
are the creation of Ezra Chatterton, a young player with cancer who got to spend a day at Blizzard headquarters thanks to the Make A Wish Foundation. He got to create these two NPCs, voice Ahab, and create the quest
Kyle's Gone Missing!
to go with them, among other things. He passed away in October of 2008 when his tumor, which had been in remission, came back. His main character, Ephoenix, can sometimes (very
very
rarely) still be seen online on the Norgannon server when his father logs on.
Caylee Dak
and her pet
Dusky
in Shattrath City (on Aldor Rise and belonging to the Darnassus faction) was the character of Dak Krause, who passed away from leukemia on August 22, 2007. She ends the quest
Alicia's Poem
.
Koiter
is a slightly more complicated memorial. While NPC Koiter uses the Spirit Healer model, behind him is a memorial in a small subzone called the Shrine of the Fallen Warrior in the northern Barrens. Atop the structure is an orc that is a copy of Michel Koiter's character from the WoW beta. He died in 2004 of unknown causes.
Captain Armando O s s e x
is a member of the Stormpike Guard in Alterac Mountains. He is apparently a memorial to a deceased player who loved playing AV, but information other than this is scarce. I was unable to find a date of death or whether the patrolling character was a clone of his or not.
Crusader Bridenbrad
the Argent Crusader dying of the plague in Icecrown appears to be based off of a real person, Bradford C. Bridenbecker, who died of cancer in 2007. He is involved in a medium-long questline starting with
A Tale of Valor
, given to you by Tirion Fordring after you've unlocked the Crusaders' Pinnacle. It is speculated that he may be related to a Blizzard programmer.
Again in Hillsbrad is a
Decorated Headstone
dedicated to Jesse Morales, a Blizzard employee who passed away while WoW was still under development. There was no other information.

It's a little weird that they put this memorial near an area where players kill a lot of dwarves. I'd have put it somewhere that the dwarves rein supreme, like Dun Morogh.

found the memorial while farming the dwarves in dun garok. Was wondering what the heck , but did a bit of reasearch and found out more so must say it is honorable to make little memorials like this somewhere hidden in the world.
But when there should be no association to the other guy named stark why has the dwarfs armor the colors yellow and red?

even though i have only played horde, that stopped me not from staying kneeled to the memorial for over 20 min. several dwarves came by, none killed me even if they would have got some honor.
Good job , Blizzard, at least for this one!

Just another of the small, but thoughtful touches from Blizzard, is how the new profession '
Archaeology
' leads you down to this quiet spot (via the Dwarf - 'Dun Garok Digsite')

I've been playing this game for 4 years now, done my fair share of old world exploring, but never found this memorial until I passed over it today while going to the Dun Garok dig-site.
Seeing this memorial reminded me that behind every character is a real person, and anything can happen to them at any time. I guess all we can do is appreciate the friends we've made, not get too uptight about the rivals we've conflicted with, and just enjoy the time we have.
I took off my Shadowform and knelt next to Rousch in honor of Tony.

Who would have thought, that there will be so many honor, in a simple game like that. And by honor, I do not mean the one you get from killing enemy players, I mean REAL honor, that touches your heart, and stays in your memory.
I started from the memorial of Koiter, and I ended up reading stories, that put pain in my chest. I have played this game from around 7 years, and had no idea that there is so deep meaning in simple things like that. Which leads me to an idea, that will ease my pain, and most likely the pain of others.
On each of their respective birthdays, and the days that all of them have died, aswell during the Day Of The Dead, I will go to all of their memorials, and give respect to their deaths. I will bring along friends, and tell them who those people are, and how they died. It will be good from all of you, to do the same. Because, when few words are spoken, or wrote on a small piece of paper, they with ease fade into the abyss of time, but, when many, many words are wrote, they become a book, and a book, can be passed down with centuries and milleniums. We, the people that respect those who have died, are the words. Let us find more people, and make a whole book with them, so the honor of those who have died, be remembered for as long as possible.
Let us now bow and kneel to the dead ones, because, no one shall escape from that, be it king, or be it simple harvester. I will post this around, and make more people see this. Let us do something, that we can be proud of, let us show to the families and close friends, that we, the ones that play this game, care a lot.
P.S. : Message created by DarkTroll. One Must Die To Be Reborn, those have died, and shall be reborn, by this memorial. When titles, races, sides, weapons and armors are removed, we are all just mortal people.(##RESPBREAK##)2060##DELIM##Sas148##DELIM##

Archaeology took me here, too.
Before today, despite having played since vanilla, I'd never seen this.
It's 03:00 in the UK and very quiet. That seems fitting.
I think that this is the first page upon which there are only positive comments.
Ever sensitive, my Moonkin Hatchling grew a flower. Those present looked at each other and we shared a moment.
A screenshot has been uploaded. I hope that it does justice to that spot.
If you're ever near there, see it for yourself.

Reading the comments on these memorial forums brings back my faith in WoW players. And the memorials themselves brings back my enjoyment of the game. I came across this monument and was very moved, though I didn't have any offerings, I threw a rejuv and swiftmend to make it look pretty, at least for a few seconds.

I stumbled upon this site earlier tonight while, for the first time, doing Archaeology (I started playing WoW this last December, after years of being pestered by an older brother who has played since Vanilla) on my Death Knight. Immediately, after seeing a memorial and taking due note of the date shown upon inspection of the head stone (1961 - 2005) I searched the name. I just had to know what this was. The first link was this page, and after reading the true story behind Anthony Stark, I found myself speechless, and have since discarded a stack of 20 Spirits of Harmony.
It is amazing how much care is shown by the employees of Blizzard to immortalize people they know, who truly did love the game.

Phenomenal job by Blizzard on this, and to every single person that stopped by there to pay respects. I'm not one to tear up lightly, but the lump in my throat and the tear running down my cheek told a different tale....

This is an incredible act of kindness, honor, and remembrance... It's the little things like this that make World of Warcraft the thing it is, and is why I will continue to play it for as long as I can.
For those of you who have a paladin character, find the "Glyph of Contemplation", and use the spell that it gives you in front of this. It really is a sight to behold. It would be really neat if Blizzard did something more with contemplation, and have something neat happen at the memorials scattered around the game would be really awesome, and definitely (Not that it isn't already) make it worth finding them all...
Blizzard, keep up the amazing work, we appreciate every single bit of it, even the smallest details!

Came across this and read off the other memorials that are around WoW and just..wow..Thoughtful and considering for them to keep these all active in all the expansions and patches. Though I find it rather sad that the one in Org is no longer able to be got to.
Also has anyone else noticed that Rousch has a poinsettia in his hand when he salutes? It disappears right before he kneels again though.

I'm not sure why, but the thing that actually brings real tears to my eyes is the fact they had his character kneel before his grave. Makes me think of Fry's dog waiting. I think I'll really miss my main the day WoW finally shuts down.
