You can't summon this boss unless someone has the lure -
- and fish -
To buy the lure you have to complete this quest -
- first. It starts from a crate on the ground near the lake in ZG.
You get the fish by fishing in ZG, I believe it requires 365 fishing skill.
You are correct. You fish in the muddy pools of water located in a variety of places in the instance. It requires 5 to cast the barrel.
As for Ghaz'ranka himself, I suggest swimming into the deep pool to the south of Nat Pagle's Landing, and clearing out the fish. Have whoever's holding it through the barrel in, and get with everyone else in the pool underwater. Use warlocks to cast underwater breathing.
If you do this, the fight is a joke and easy. The tank handles Ghaz'ranka relatively far away from everyone else but still under water. This eliminates his knockback and damage moves. He's just a damage versus healer fight at that point, which is easy.
On a side note, if any fish respawn, have mages polymorph them if close to killing, otherwise have a few switch focus and kill them.
For all you who seek to make a little extra money and fun
Two man this boss - An awerage healer and a decent tank is enough at lvl 70.
Done with 70 Blood elf paladin and 70 Orc warrior (No problem, not even close to dead or running low on mana)
Chance of the book drop is either a happy mage in guild or a happy crew to sell the book which I would say is an easy 1k gold atleast!
kinda hard boss to do 3man ... since he aggro resets while the tank is in teh air ...
i would suggest tank him under some kind of roof somewhere since when i tanked him under the water he kept knockbackin me :/
stupid boss hits for ~800 on a well geared tank ...
his massive geyser thingy might do ~5k falldmg :/
gl have fun ...
as Lightophile said "For all you who seek to make a little extra money and fun" ... go grind primals or something ... the stupid book wont drop ... :(
Is this boss related to Gahz'rilla in Zul'farrak?
same monster skin and as we all know blizz can't think of any new ideas so pratically same name
gahz'rilla is meant to sound like godzilla, but gahz'ranka...
Just to note, it seems that if you summon this boss and fail to kill him, you will be unable to summon him again later.
Just a note that you can in fact reset ZG - just walk outside, disband your group, reform and walk back in.
Two manned with a Holy Paladin and a Protection Warrior. Stood at the edge of the water so the knockback knocked us into the water, then ran back to the edge of the land so that the fish would not keep attacking us. Judge Wisdom and keep the Seal up and you should never have mana problems.
I didn't, but a paladin on the Allakhazam forums solod him.
For those uninitiated...
To summon Gahz'ranka you'll need mudskunk lures and zulian mudskunks (fish). Here are the steps:
(1) Enter ZG (you'll need to be at least lvl 55 and in a raid group... get a friend to grp with you and convert to raid; if either of you drops group, you'll be ported, so get someone who isn't questing since being in a raid will prevent him from completing most quests). I recommend lvl 70 so you have a small aggro radius. Make an immediate left through the tall grass and pass to the left of a troll mob in front of a hut (you can
as a priest, but it's really unnecessary at 70). Jump into the water, and swim over the waterfall and down into a large circular moat.
(2) You may aggro the fish (
), but they are 60 elite and any class in decent gear can solo them. They give you a 75% armor debuff, but this shouldn't be a problem unless you're fighting more than 1 or 2. Kill the fish.
(3) Go clockwise, killing fish as needed. The 4-packs or 5-packs of
on the shore won't aggro if you stay away from them. Some classes can solo these alligators (my holy pally has no problem, but my priest has a rough time), and you may want to for the rep items they drop (coins and bijous) if you care about ZG rep. ZG rep is still useful for enchanters interested in producing
considered by some to be superior to their TBC replacements.
(4) Pagle Point is on the NE corner and pretty obvious. It has no alligators. Run ashore there and collect up as much
Darkmoon Special Reserve
as you like (gets you drunk). Click on Nat Pagle's
and accept the
(5) Hearth, force-hearth, or die (naked, but the run-back is longish) and go visit
in Duskwallow Marsh. Turn in the quest, and buy a bunch of
from him (1g each).
(6) Return to ZG with a fishing pole and some fishing skill. Look for "muddy churning water" pools (often near alligator groups; if you have
ability, turn it on) and fish up 5
. You need 425 fishing to avoid getaways, so max fishing (375 skill) and a lure guarantees you no headaches. You won't be able to fish from land in most spots without aggroing the gators, so either use a priest/shaman (
) to fish, or solo the alligator packs (if you can) or go back to Pagle Point and fish the single pool there, if it exists. Unfortunately a pool will usually yield only 2-3 fish. The pools respawn after some time, probably after soft-reset. The alligator-packs will as well.
An option for non-priest/shaman is to use
Elixir of Waterwalking.
This elixir is a common reward from the fishing daily, and they are often on the AH.
On some servers the fish are for sale, but that's uncommon.
(7) Get yourself a group and go back to Pagle Point in ZG. Decide on your strategy and click on a Mudskunk Lure with 5 fish in inventory (you do not need fishing skill to do this... anyone can summon with a lure and 5 fish... they are not soulbound). This summons Gahz'ranka. He has been soloed in 70mins, but obviously it's much easier with 3 friends in 5mins.
Go kill the tiger boss up the hill and get your tiger mount afterward! Good luck.
Soloed as a prot warrior at level 70 in 16 minutes. I was fully buff, with gear (T5 - ZA) giving me passive immunity to crushing blow (102.4% miss + dodge + parry + block rating). With 17805 armor, 717 block value and demoralizing shout always up I took no physical damage. To avoid his frost damage, I used
at the beginning and then
every 2 minutes.
can help you, as always when soloing old boss.
I killed him into the water and didn't aggro any fish, though they had respawn since my previous try.
He loot no gold, so with all these consumables you will lose money if you never loot the turtle book. Better to do it easily with a healer and share the gold ^^
Did this with my Feral Girlfriend yesterday, and had the tome drop. Took roughly 20 minutes to do the fight (I'm a resto shaman, so not very much in ways of dps). Had the tome drop, and went home 2k richer after selling it to a mage who was more then happy to pay for it.
If you going to fish
, remember to hold fishing bobber inside the
Muddy Churning Waters
, you will get Zulian only when bobber is inside Muddy Waters. After 3 successful catches, fishing spot will disappear so u need to find other one.
Soloed this as a T6 Feral Druid today. The fight took 17 minutes and was quite challenging. Basically I used Frenzied Regeneration and Badge of Tenacity whenever I could, and if I got low on health I used Barkskin+Regrowth+Healing Touch x2. It's important to time this after he casts
to avoid interuption. I got through 3 Innervates and 3 Super Mana Potions.
He didn't drop the tome but I'll be returning here every 3 days. :)
Fun fight, make sure you get the lure barrel thing, be aware that tossing the lure summons him instantly (the first time, i thought you had to fish with it), Can be 3-manned pretty easily. I personally prefer 3-manning over trying to 5 or 6 man it, just because there's fewer people to screw up. ;)
Anyway: Does anyone know if there's a way to tell if he's been summoned/killed already?
Because it'd be nice to know for when I do pug ZG runs, if it's close to the reset then I don't have to feel guilty about running down with some friends for a chance at the book. If there's anything like "all the fish pools despawn after an hour" or "trolls dance at pagle's point" that would let me know if they got him after I left or not, that'd be pretty cool.
What gear is required to 5 man her at lvl 70? 1 tank 1 healer 3 dps? :D and if its so what gear?
2-manned him with a feral druid and a resto druid in mostly Karazhan purples. The healer had to innervate and drink a couple potions, but we didn't have any difficulty.
For bored T6 geared feral druids, i recommend trying a few solo attempts on this boss and if you can kill it, keep farming it. As mentioned previously, the polymorph book is worth a lot and a for a well geared feral tank this fight is surprisingly easy.
-Use the statute technique mentioned above, to avoid the fall damage.
-Wear full tank gear and have your Moroes' Lucky Pocket Watch equipped, ready to trinket, barkskin, health pot, heal when you get low (start thinking about healing at around 40%)
-Wait until Ghaz has used his knockback before switching out to heal (watch for the screen shaking and switch out just after that), even if you're getting really low. If the knockback interrupts whatever heal you were trying off, you're pretty much dead.
-In high stam gear the healing from improved LotP will keep you from needing to switch out to heal often, I usually only have to heal 2 or 3 times.
Iwe ben thinking on it for a while, but seriusly, this monster has quite some stories to tell. For instance, i dont remember which, but theres a quest were u gotta colect the zulian story tablets from the 4 old troll ruins, and they tell a story of wen ALL of STV was flooded over. So as far as i can guess. This wil explain how all these hero's could have runned into him, as they most probably wodnt enter actuly Zul'Gurub, but rather travel over the great sea and then, the monster would have ben taken whit the flow into the old trolls sacred home...
both Nat Pagle and Tigule and Foror have runned into this sea monster.
Nat Pagle most probably got attacked while fishing, which will explain the fishing rod and the broken reel.
Tigule and Foror. . . Thats a good question... i gues they were taking a trip over the sea on theyr adventures, which'l explain the eye Patch and Harpoon.
Yust a litle post i wanted to do :3
For The Deadliest Catch Achievement ..
At level 70, you can easily swim to Pagle's Point, having to kill only a few fish along the way.
When Gahz'ranka is summoned, only the person that actually performs the summoning will receive the Achievement. However, if you are able to kill Gahz'ranka (which my husband and I were easily able to do .. Feral Druid \ Enh Shaman) and have an additional 5 fish and a lure, you can re-summon the boss immediately. Gahz'ranka will not reappear, but if a different person performed the summoning, they will also get the Achievement.
Just solo'd as a 70 holy pally in T6 level gear. With the vast regen now provided by Seal of Wisdom + Judgement of Wisdom, it was simply a case of keeping them both up, Holy Shocking on every cooldown, healing up when below 70% (using primarily FoL, or a Divine Favor'd Holy Light), and wearing down the beast. Mana went down faster when below 35% due to the introduction of Hammer of Wrath into my rotation, but at that point it was simply a matter of balancing mana supply and damage output. If I ever dropped below 20% mana I would just auto attack and judge wisdom until back above 50% mana.
The fight took around 10-15 mins, but
no consumables were used, nor were Divine Shield, Hand of Protection or Lay on Hands used.
Positioning is very important - you need to be standing underneath the support beams in Nat's burnt out tent. I only got hit up once when I must've been out of that position.
Solo'd today as a 70 holy paladin, as the above poster said its reasonably easy with the huge regen but I did not fight him inside the tent, I found an area where you get knocked up but land in the water but he does not move so did not have to worry about fall damage, used bubble at the end as a frenzy respawned on me and would have been destroyed with the huge armor debuff from it.
Used LoH at the end for extra mana to nuke the last few % off, great fun
No poly: turtle book this try though but got the deadliest catch :)
Was going after this fellow for the fishing achievement and figured we'd might aswell try our hand at smacking him down.
We = 2 lvl 75 Death Knights in questing greens/few blues, both deep in blood.
He went down without much trouble (a bit surprised that our self healing was enough to keep us alive tbh, but it worked nicely).
Just took a little while to wear him down, about 5-10 or so minutes.
As a lvl 80 boomkin, I was able to solo him today. It took about 5 minutes to do so and it wasn't easy. I'm still wearing at least 5 blues with only 3piece T7(10) so it will only get easier as the higher quality gear is attained.
I had to pop innervate about halfway through and use 1 mana pot towards the end which I probably could've skipped cause he was almost dead at that point.
I'm sure other classes will have an easier time then I did. =]
Edit: I wanted to add that the tip about standing under the nose of the statue is GREAT for positioning. You don't have to worry about the fall damage nor do you have to worry about the fish respawning on you during the fight.
Easily soloed as a Resto Shaman today. Took about 8 minutes or so, just put down searing totem, melee'd, shocked and cast riptide on myself on cooldown.
At first, I was just healing through the fall damage which was easy in itself, but at some point I ended up under the tent and didn't get knocked up again for the rest of the fight. Didn't matter either way, just made it a bit faster.
Easily soloed as a level 80 Prot Pally. Buffed myself with Sanctuary and used Frost Resist aura. Judged Light and kept up Seal of Wisdom. Just stand in the water and you won't take the fall damage from his knockback.
Pathetically easy to solo now.
I just did it with my girlfriends druid standing near by in case it got rough, and I was amazing able to keep myself up.
Blood DK, no tanking talents, and about ~475 def in tanking gear.
I soloed this today as a level 80 shadow priest in ilevel 200-226 gear. The boss can get some lucky crits off so make sure inner fire is up at all times.. it also helps to shield often if you have the mana for it.
Soloed him last night as a TG warrior. I tossed on a couple pieces of tanking gear and used my 2hander and my shield. It was rough had to pot and I used lifeblood + enraged regeneration twice. Save the shield wall for when you have to wait for your regen to come back up. Still almost didnt make it but it was fun as hell!
Hmm i wonder why you can't skin a gigantic sea monster that u fish out of the water
Easily soloed this pathetic sea monster yesterday..... NOT REALLY :D I thought this post was to tell people how to summon it.. oh well :) As an 80 lock i was actually able to SWIM to pagles point while gathering Zulian Mudskunks, and didn't have to kill a single thing (well maybe a dude in the front door because he was chasing me when I was going in the instance) but anyway! I swam to Pagles Pointe clicked the Lure thing started to run away but then i thought WHAT THE HELL! :D and tried to killit but failed horribly :( after he killed my felguard I let it kill me then I rezd with ss and swam as far away as possible :D
Soloed as a BM Hunter in pre-Naxx epics with a scorpid pet. Pet wasn't talented for tanking. Would be a much easier fight with a pet that has Pet Barding and Blood of the Rhino. No special techniques required. Just Auto, Steady, Sting, Mend, Feign, MD, cooldowns.
Went to ZG to do
and was like "Why not?" And killed it.
along with the epic leather helm dropped.
- 80 BM hunter.
Trivial as a feral druid - could probably do it in greens. I didn't even have to heal.
I tried soloing him tonite but every 30-40 seconds or so he kept reseting aggro...
Anyone knows why this keeps happening?
Porr vw couldnt build squat
Very easy to solo as an 80 warlock.
Spec'd haunt / soul link would be ideal.
Keep out a pet - I used my felhunter, this allows you some time while gahz will target your pet to use his frost breath every now and then. Just drain tank with Demon Armor + Siphon Life + Corruption + Haunt + CoE and spam your Drain Life while refreshing Haunt. Keep a Health stone made in case you get low.
Another tip is to use your Demonic Teleport ability so that you can (if not in water) not take the fall damage, but more importantly you get to the ground faster and then can start draining again.
Soloing ZG as Retribution Paladin: Gahz'ranka
It's one of the easy fights of ZG. Only thing you need to do is stand right below the nose of the head statue and don't move an inch from there. Since he can't throw you in the air when you're standing there, it's a simple fight without any surprises.
My spell setup: Bl.of W, SoC, JoW , no consecrations at all. Don't forget to use Divine Plea when it's available.
My gear: Naxx10 equivalent.
Agathoklis, human retribution paladin in Bloodhoof
Beware soloing using the 'hide under the statue' method...
Easy to solo as 80 tank warrior, and done it a few times just standing in the water so you get no fall damage. Today I tried standing under the nose to get a quicker kill, and it worked for about 8 or 10 knockbacks. Had him down to about 10-15% and he somehow managed to knock me up into the air next time (think he may have been moving me a very small amount each time he bumped me up in air to the statue's nose?). When I was in air, he evade-glitched, and reset his health bar, while my health bar dropped from about 25k down to 5k from fall damage. Died shortly after that ofc.
80 Prot warrior in mostly naxx25 gear.
Ok now im getting $%^&ed he still hasent dropped this bloody tome of polymorph and been farming it for months, how many times have you's had to farm it before its dropped?
after summoning this boss just for the achievement, i decided to give it a shot in soloing him as a survival hunter, very easy fight, just had to make sure pet had aggro, to my surprise, it dropped the turtle polymorph tome, and traded it to a guildie mage for a tcg epic tabard
Solo'd today as a Blood 80 DK. Extrmely easy fight. Stand underneath the statues nose and you will take, at most, 800 dmg from the Massive Geyser.
Keep up diseases, sacrifice your pet if needed, etc... Took about 4 minutes from start to finish. Probly would have gone quicker, but I was in tank gear(which wasn't needed).
Got Tome of Polymorph: Turtle and Tigule's Harpoon! Woot!
been farming him on my disc priest lately, pretty easy solo, no poly turtle yet
If you're soloing this it would be a good idea to tank
under the statue at the little camp. If you stand under the statue's nose you won't get thrown up in the air when he does his
and you won't get knocked back from the
Soloed him without much trouble as an 80 shadow priest using the 'hide under nose of statue' method. 25-man Naxx gear and a couple Ulduar pieces. (+2200 sp).
To whoever downrated all the comments about soloing Gahz'ranka, please stop. This is useful information now that soloing 20 man raid bosses is in the realm of possibility.
Not surprising - Solo'd as Lvl 80 Prot Pally. Heroic Blues with a few epics. Stand under the statue nose works great. You can rotate your camera once fighitng to keep yourself under the nose because he does indeed move you slightly left or right on the knockback power. Seal of wisdom then judge light or wisdom depending on your need. Keep Divine Plea up with hits. Sacred Shield up as well. Then pound a way. It takes a while but is very doable. Turtle morf book dropped on my second try. Will keep at it. Side note - watch out for the troll axe throwers. They can stun lock you or something pretty quick. Most mobs drop coins and bijous if you are looking for that stuff too.
Note posting to brag just to give info. Going back into older stuff is pretty fun and a good way to get caught up on lore and explore stuff I never had the chance to see.
solo'd as an 80 ele shaman, very simple. just slow dps and occasionally heal. used the under the nose method. sold the polymorph turtle book for 1k :D
Soloable as an 80 Ele Shaman, mostly PVP gear with 4 pc t9.5, PVP spec. Glyphs = Stoneclaw, Thunder, Fire Nova Totem (not useful on this fight, of course)
Drop Earth Elemental, burn Ohgan (I didn't need Bloodlust; you might depending on gear).
The trick is you want the Earth Ele up for his entire Enrage, so you have 1 minute to kill Ohgan.
Heal the elemental as necessary until Enrage wears off. Use PVP trinket on the fear only if the elemental is under 50%.
Once the elemental expires, alternate between Stoneclaw Totem (for the shield) and Tremor Totem (to break fear). Keep Water Shield up, heal yourself as necessary. I actually used a mana pot, because it was dragging on so long that I got tired of it.
Soloed him with my disc priest, mixed gear. Not recommended as you're not actually fighting him but your mana pool, slow dps ftw. Reflective shield ended up doing about 60% of the damage which led to a long fight. But anyone who wants to try anyway, it's possible :).
Soloed as a frostmage in pvp specc, was just meant to do the "Deadliest Catch"- Achivement.
why he's he in uncaturized npc's isnt it obious he is godzilla? ^^
Solo'd as an 80 Shadow Priest.
I used the statue method, but before throwing the lure in I changed to my Holy off-spec and dropped a Lolwell, than changed back to Shadow. As long as you stay under the nose his knockback isn't anything to worry about and as long as you keep PW:S up he won't hurt you too bad. He started hitting a little harder towards the end so I started using my Lolwell and my Shadowfiend to finish him off.
Took about a 2 minutes tops for me to kill him, and he dropped the Tome, Tigule's harpoon, and two greens. Needless to say I was a VERY happy camper.
Half-heartedly tried to solo with my 80 rogue in epic PVP gear after completing the Deadliest Catch. Buffed up with what I could (agil scroll and +80ap/stam well fed buff) and "tanked" him under the nose as suggested. Had him down to 48% health when he tossed me into the air and brought me to 20%. Considered chugging a health pot but realized it prob wouldn't keep me alive long enough to take him out at that point regardless (and my trinkets and evasion cooldowns were spent). Opted for vanish to get out alive. :) Anyway, based on my one measly attempt I'd say if you don't have healing capabilities, you're better off taking a buddy if you want to try for him.
8/9/10 - Solo'd him as a lvl 80 combat rogue (GS 5684). Used deadly poison, instant poison, food buff, and one runic health potion. Down to 6K health before he dropped.
Zul Gurub as a raid will be gone by Cataclysm, so It would be a good idea for you to farm the Tome as much as you can before them
This goes for the Raptor Hatchlings and the mounts as well
More than a year later, it might be worth noting that this boss is now complete faceroll for most classes to solo at 80. Just stand under the nose of the statue behind you to avoid fall damage.
Other worthwhile ZG bosses - Thekal (rezing) and Mandokir (burst damage, fears) - still take moderate concentration.
Soloed as arcane mage with icc gear.Nothing hard just nuke but can be need healing pots.
Best way to solo him as any lvl 80 Class is to pull him inside the water, basicaly he dosent hit that hard, tho his knock back into the air will case big fall damage ( about 16k on icc25 hc gear feral druid ).
his name is very similiar to gah'rilla
Hmm... you can still buy Mudskunk Lures from Nat Pangle in Dustwallow Marsh, I wonder if this was an oversight.
Interesting that the hydra in Underbog, Outland has the same naming convention as 3 other hydra in Azeroth.
all share the same naming convention with
. The 'H' has a different placement, but they would still all sound very very similar.
Perhaps the connection between Outland and Azeroth via the Old Gods is indeed a viable theory. Or perhaps the Naga and Blood Elves brought it over with them?
Both theories are merely speculation at the moment. It is just food for thought for the lore-hounds.
Bit of harmless fun to include the original fishing skill based quest in the game in order that this removed NPC may be fought.
You'd only consider removing this whole thing if you were wanting to remove fun.
C'mon. Enough of this already. Leave things like this in the game come the Legion expansion. Please.
