I recommend watching Preach’s interview for yourselves rather than a summery of it.Well, if you care about or are interested in game design. It’s incredibly insightful in that regard. If you’re just looking for a Q&A... it’s not a Q&A, it’s a discussion of designing mechanics and how they affect the player base.Ion and Preach eventually come to a civil disagreement.
It's very frustrating to see Ion's response to Preach. I would love it if things worked out the way Ion intends them to, but they won't and he seems blind to that reality. People will min-max even if they're not playing at the top 1% of hard endgame content. There will be "wrong" Covenant and Soulbind choices based on your spec. I don't know why Ion is pretending we've been playing the game differently for 15+ years.
Nobody is going to be 'locked' into a Covenant they chose in week one. It has already been established that players will be able to switch, and that only switching back to a previous Covenant will come with some cost. I seriously don't get this debate. Pugs don't "demand" talent choices today, neither will they "demand" Covenants. This whole conflict is artificial butthurt.
It's not about what is the wrong choice or the right choice with covenants. What is going to happen is that if you get invited to a group for a mythic+ or a raid and your performance (damage) is low because of your covenant/conduit choice, then you will be kicked or replaced.Almost no one will inspect you or ask you what choice you made or what build you are going with, but your performance in the group is what will make the others kick you out. This is the problem and this is what people are afraid of and sadly blizzard won't realise that untill the last patch of the expansion like before :(
Void Elves already have the venthyr teleport, and I've never heard anyone demand it.Night elves can just stealth drop aggro after, but that's not demanded in the real game.People make mountains out of molehills. We don't need to be handed everything. It's okay for others to have abilities that we don't. It won't really affect the game -that- much.I'm all for Ion's ideas, I love Taliesin. This is my thought process as well, though I'm admittedly more optimistic than Tali about how this will work at implementation.I hope every 'best' trait gets nerfed and every 'worst' gets buffed until people just decide to play what's fun instead of what's flavor of the month. :p
The problem, In my opinion, is that people demand choice in WoW. Wanting to freely choose the Covenant, mix/match abilities/soulbinds at will.Even Preach stated this in the video with Ion, "It's our choice, let us do what we want."Making a choice means there there are consequences of that decision. The ONLY CHOICE players that want everything are making, is the choice to be wishy-washy and noncommittal.
Being a +15 year game is the most important point! This isn't a new MMO. They have messed this up balance wise and tell us, "it will be fine" for years. How many times does blizzard have to get it wrong till they listen? Blizzard has the right to be creative and new each expansion. People can't just pretend they know how to balance until the end of the expansion. BFA, the literal last expansion, is the coffin of truths to this. People just can't argue azerite armor worked... Remember artifact knowledge? How about Garrisons? Criticizing something we love just means we care. Not the opposite. We all just want each covenant to be a fun choice instead of a forced one. Imagine if the covenants didn't give armor. This point would be so much worse.
Glad we agree ^~^ (no sarcasm)
People actually knowing a class inside and out makes the difference. Ex: having a retribution Paladin that is chucking enemies , throwing out a BOP on a healer to save the run on a healer / off healing an ally is far more useful than someone who just focuses damage alone . Unfortunately , everyone and their loa thinks they can just crush on all of their alts.I can agree to preach and his concern, but how many people actually do everything in their toolkit these days?Covenants aren’t the Main problem as it comes down to the people doing x y z.So many keys are blown and raids/ arenas because of attitudes towards certain challenges .
