WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Hello! Welcome to the 122nd edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
My name is
Samadan
and I am a content creator focusing on making gold using Professions and
TSM
. I have a number of guides over on
YouTube
and I also stream my adventures on
Twitch
.
Crafting Professions
With the extension of the XP Buff and now the Rep Buff, there has been a flurry of activity with fresh new 120 characters. The Professions that feed them have been seeing a positive amount of sales from the reports I have heard as well as my own experience.
BregVids
has a great video here explaining why the armor crafting professions (
Tailoring
,
Leatherworking
&
Blacksmithing
) are doing particularly well at the moment..
It's worth remembering that Uncanny gear is faction specific, so check your realms balance and population to see which side would be most profitable to sell to. I can report that Tailoring and Leatherworking have been doing particulary well on Alliance EU Shadowsong and I'm about to get into Blacksmithing and complete the trio, so can report back on that later.
On the note of professions,
Hikons
has released a very insightful video talking about
Inscription
. It's well worth a watch going through the various methods to make gold with BfA Inscription ..
Children's Week
Children's Week
is upon us at the beginning of May, and with it brings a few ways to make gold. I'm digging up a post from last year by
u/Kurraga on Children's Week potential money makers
.
One way is to sell food required for the achievement
Bad Example
, required for the meta:
With cooking you can make
Delicious Chocolate Cake
and
Tasty Cupcake
. You'll need
Mageroyal
,
small eggs
for the Chocolate Cake so if you haven't stocked up already you might need to go farm them.
The vendor Foods are mostly brought from
Aimee
by the north bank in Dalaran (both old and new):
Dalaran Brownire
,
Dalaran Doughnut
,
Red Velvet Cupcake
and
Lovely Cake Slice
(which requires first buying a
lovely cake
, placing it down and looting it 5 times, the cake has a cooldown of 30 minutes so don't go crazy buying them).
Then the
Strawberry Icecream
can be bought from
various vendors
, for alliance the best one is probably the gnome between the bank and the AH in SW Trade District.
The other potential market would be looking onto investing in pets:
Peanut
,
Egbert
and
Willy
can all be obtained from doing the children's week questline, which you can do yourself (probably takes less than an hour to do everything) or from just buying them. Like other event items they're usually easiest to come by during the event so now is a good opportunity to start looking out for them going for cheap.
Personally I've sold a 1-2 of each of the vendor foods for about 2000g each and 10 the chocolate cakes for around 1000g each so far, but prices have already crashed pretty significantly after the event started, but that's to be expected. There are always going to be lazy people who will go to the AH rather than a vendor (or even bother to look up what vendor they need to go to) so it's worth a shot trying to milk them.
There are also a plethora of other pets including some BfA ones which are worth looking out for. I personally will be dusting off my Cakes from last year which have been sitting in the guild bank to see if I can sell a few!
Market Prices
There are many factors that influence the market prices in WoW and with the current expansion drawing to a close, many are seeking to read the market and anticipate prices to find areas to make a profit. In general, prices will decline over the life of an expansion.
u/Phattwoohie
asks the question -
Zin'athid Price Dropping? Is this Happening On Your Server Too?
On my server the price of Zin has stayed steady around the 40 gold mark. it will fluctuate between 34-40 most weeks and has spiked up to 50-60 when someone would buy it all out and reset it. This past week however, the price steadily started tanking and it doesn't seem to be selling much at all. It's down to 24 gold and I can't figure out why. There is a ton of it on the AH as well because as I said, it's like people have stopped buying. I figured with the introduction of Mythic cross server coming out, it would get a boost or at the very least remain steady in price.
Has anyone else noticed a drop on their servers? Are the multiboxers dumping or does this have something to do with Alpha and all the hype about the expansion? I'm sitting on tons of this stuff and I'm worried I won't be able to even break even now. I may have to sit on it till the expansion and slowly sell it off next year.
There are multiple speculations in the thread and I will summarise a few here ...
- The expansion is over and there is less demand than ever for herbs. This happens at the end of every expansion. The player count is way down from where it was and there are less people buying things. Just look at how the WoW token is tanking.
- More people are farming than ever like you said. Not just multiboxers. Might have to do with the pandemic? The market is being flooded with herbs that there is no demand for. It isn't just Zin either. Every herb has tanked.
- My suspicion on this is the new players coming back don't understand the FILO and are simply undercutting like in the past.
- Pay attention to the prices on stormrage/area 52/illidan for raiding crap as they have the best market and will help you understand the real value of things on lower pop realms. Prices have been 20-30g on those 3 servers for over a month now.
- 8.3 was confirmed as last patch was enough foreshadowing that prices were going to fall as ppl give less of a shit about progression. Why stay on top of the game with mythic difficulty when it's getting thrown away by fresh quest greens
- COVID is causing more people to stay home and play so there's more farmers
- Finally, the release of alpha is another potential nail in the coffin of confidence in the BFA playerbase, ie, the market
It is well worth looking at
The Undermine Journal
to see trends in market prices. Here is what
Zin'anthid looks like on US Stormrage
..
And then the same on
Shadowsong EU
...
As you can see, there is far less quantity on Shadowsong, yet the trends follow a similar curve, even across US and EU. If you look at a similar high pop realm on EU like Draenor, the results are similar to Stormrage US.
Jack_the_Dipper made a similar comparison recently on my Discord showing the price comparison with Aethril over the course of Legion ..
The decline of Zin'anthid does seem particularly harsh in comparison when you note the timescale of 2-3 months for Zin'anthid versus about 5-6 months for Aethril.
He also speculates that this might be due to the new Auction House changes that came in 8.3 and the LIFO system coupled with the removal of posting/selling in stacks, the race to the bottom is even harsher...
So this is the reason why I really hate the new buying and selling system in WoW. Anything you see below the red line has literally lost the race. The moment you post something you will loose in 10 minutes. 57450 tidespray totally posted and the price wont go up until those 12929 are gone and trust me that's not gonna happen becuase also those price walls will be undercut and guess what? The moment the old walls come down, they will be reposted again and you will get that same effect over and over again.
I don't have the choice anymore for how much I want to sell my items, go with the flow (be the lowest in price) or don't post. Before this new system was introduced, I sold so much because I used need stack sizes like 3 or 4 flasks or 40 herbs and not like the 1 or 200 stack sizes. I sold so much that way and the profits were better because I could ask a bit more. Sounds strange but trust me, 80% wasn't price but stack size that sold.
Now you have to babysit the AH almost to stay the cheapest or you end up behind that red line and you lose. It isn't even interesting to post items for longer then 12 hours anymore because of all the more undercutting. It's a waste of gold.
My prediction is that sooner or later the AH will be overflown so much and a lot of items won't have any decent value anymore. The people that will feel it the most are the flippers and the crafters that buy mats to craft and sell again. Only the farmers will benefit from this system for the moment, that until the items won't be worth anymore to farm.
It's an interesting observation from an experienced gold maker recently returned to WoW since the AH revamp. What do you think of the new system?
There has certainly been a removal of player choice in both buying and selling with the lowest and last ALWAYS coming first. Has this pushed the prices into a downward spiral too fast? What would be a solution? A maximum limit on posting quantity?
It will be interesting to see where the bottom line reaches with these curves as we continue on in the expansion. Where will the price level out? I suspect there will come a point until the price is so low, there will be a vendor shuffle identified and that will represent the bottom floor of the market.

Sniping with TSM in 8.3
The TSM team have clarified how "Sniping", the art of snapping up bargains on the Auction House has changed since the update of the Auction House system in a blog post about
TSM Addon Changes for 8.3
.
Since the new Auction House changes went live in patch 8.3, we wanted to clarify some of the changes in fuctionality to the Sniper feature in TradeSkillMaster.
One of the biggest underlying changes,
which was referenced in the blog post earlier this year
, is that the AH no longer has ‘pages’.
Before 8.3 you could only see 50 auctions at a time, and you could only get information for another set of 50 auctions if you loaded the next or previous page. This also meant that there was a ‘first’ page and a ‘last’ page, and based on the way Auctions were sorted you could reliably identify those which had just been posted if they were on the ‘last’ page.
After 8.3 with pages being removed and no means to sort auctions by ‘most recent’, the only way to replicate the Sniper functionality is to repeatedly run a search for the items on the Auction House in general – just like you would search for something in the Default Blizzard UI.
This may feel sluggish and slower compared to how Sniper functioned before 8.3, so we would recommend using a smaller, focused group of items for a targeted approach to Sniping which requires searching for fewer things on the Auction House. We would also recommend removing the #Default Sniper Operation from the Base Group, as that will waste time running searches for all items that are not otherwise explicitly grouped.
When you search for an item in TSM or in the Default Blizzard UI, all items listed will be returned since there are no pages as described earlier. This behaviour will also occur behind the scenes when Sniping which slows down the process a little further – so when an auction is found to match your Sniper Operation, all auctions listed for that item will be loaded but those that do not match your Sniper Operation will be discarded by TSM.
We hope you are still finding deals while using TSM Sniper in 8.3. We will continue to explore options to improve the feature and adapt it to the new Auction House.
I hope this clarifies expectations for those looking for quick bargains. Better to make a small target list of desirables rather than blanket scan everything.
