WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Hello! Welcome to the 116th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
My name is
Samadan
and I am a content creator focusing on making gold using Professions and
TSM
. I have a number of guides over on
YouTube
and I also stream my adventures on
Twitch
. If you want to see previous articles, they are all archived
here on wowhead.com
The State of BfA Professions in 8.3
Professions have been at the core of gold making throughout the lifespan of World of Warcraft and I'd like to talk about an aspect of the game which has been my personal focus for the past 2.5 years. At this point in BfA, let's look at them as a whole and see what still has potential and the requirements to get there.
It's never too late to get started in a profession. They are a fantastic way to make gold, but do require a fair amount of up-front development before they get going, so are not as immediate as other gold making methods like farming. Furthermore, multiple professions can feed into each other and expand on the gold making potential, so consider your alts and levelling many professions at once.
I will take a look at each one in turn, sharing my experiences and those I have gleaned from the community. The focus this time will be on the crafting professions. The gathering professions
Skinning
,
Mining
,
Fishing
and
Herbalism
can often be paired with a crafting profession or left for specific characters designed for gathering. Alternatively, they can be bypassed altogether and raw materials can be bought from the Auction House.
The focus will also be on just the Battle for Azeroth components. Many of these professions can still make a fair amount of gold through older expansions. As these require a separate levelling path for each expansion, I have left them for a later in-depth article.
I also caveat this with all servers are different with different economies. What works for one player may not work for another.
Alchemy
BfA Alchemy
is a blessing and a curse. In this late-game stage, the profit margins have been squeezed so that the only time to see any real profit (if at all) is to make use of the Silas proc from the Tools of the Trade. This is where the curse comes in. The
Silas' Sphere of Transmutation
can only be triggered once every hour and the resulting buff is random. If on the chance you do get the
Potion of Prosperity
, it only lasts 10 minutes with a 20 minute cooldown, so at max, you can make use of it 3 times in that hour.
The nature of the Silas mechanic is that you are waiting and hoping to get the buff so you can craft some potions. However, as the RNG nature is frustratingly random, you will want to make as much stock as possible when you get the buff. This least to a real feast/famine seesaw of potions and raw materials. You need a good 1 to 10 thousand
Zin'anthid
ready for processing as well as a healthy stock of all the other herbs. This requires a large pool of gold to be able to buy them at a reasonable price, ready for when you can craft. As a fledgling Alchemist, this can be difficult, but it is doable over time.
Getting into Alchemy at this stage requires going all the way to max level in Alchemy and getting the Tools of the Trade which will need a number of dungeons completed. In addition to this, the Silas buff only works on Rank 3 recipes, so there is a significant amount of work needed on getting reputations in particular Nazjatar and the others as well as waiting for Work Order World Quests for the Greater Flasks.
As you can see, this is a significant amount of work if you have not done this already. However, this barrier to entry does mean that once you are there, the sales should come through thick and fast. Alchemy potions of all kinds are still selling well as people raid and do dungeons and PVP. Potions get consumed quickly. So long as there is a demand to max the most out of your character and not steam-rolling through content, Alchemy is viable.
If all this seems too much trouble, there is always the Daily
Transmute: Herbs to Anchors
which only requires level 50 in Alchemy and will result in at least 10 Anchor Weed in exchange for 5 of every herb. This is usually a decent profit on most servers. Look at your crafting cost and divide it by 10 and compare that with the price of Anchor Weed on your server to get a good ballpark.
Enchanting
Another profession squeezed to max this late on in the expansion thanks to the bracer shuffle. Enchants have taken a steady decline in profit gradually over the course of the expansion. Again, it really requires the Tools of the trade for this particular profession, in this case
Iwen's Enchanting Rod
. This is a really good tool, it provides a passive buff to proc rates on disenchanting so long as you have it in your bags.
The down-side is that in order to make the most out of your enchanting profits, the bracer shuffle is one of the better ways to push the price of your materials down. This requires the use of a Tailor and Leatherworker and a lot of scrapping green bracers and disenchanting blues/purples. Therein lies the time sink. The whole process takes a while and can be incredibly tedious.
Enchants are still steady sellers, so long as people keep upgrading their equipment or levelling alts there will be a demand for buying enchants. The top sellers tend to be the Rings (Crit and Haste) and the various weapon enchants.
In order to make the most of Enchanting, you would need to go all the way with Rank 3's and Tools of the Trade. Again, requiring a slew of reputations and World Quests to get you there. Is it worth it at this stage of the expansion? It depends on your server and prices and competition.
An easier alternative / middle ground would be to use low level enchanting to disenchant Benthic gear for the
Veiled Crystals
and sell them on the Auction House, without the rod, your return will be slightly less, but the potential is there.
Inscription
When it comes to Inscription, there are still quite a few reasonable sellers that don't necessarily require a lot of reputation. These are the Highborne Compendiums, War Scrolls and Tomes. The Contracts are very reputation heavy though, so in order to maximise the profession it would be useful to have those. In particular, the new 8.3
Rajani
and
Uldum Accord
Contracts are still getting good prices.
The Inscription Tools of the Trade is not really necessary, so this could be a good option for an alt. The main time sink with Inscription is the Milling of Herbs and making of Pigments. You will need a large quantity and processing can take a while. It is the sort of thing that you would set off and leave while doing something else. There is no ink trader mechanism in BfA as there was in previous expansions.
Tailoring
One of the first of the key "Armour Professions", those that can provide decent upgrades for fresh alts. Over the course of the expansion, we have had the PVP gear Honorable, Sinister, Notorious and now Uncanny with the Rank 2 and 3 versions being bought with
Marks of Honor
.
The Marks of Honor can be obtained through PVP activities and are account bound. One of the best ways to get them is during
Comp Stomp
, the special Battleground vs. AI. By completing the quest that week, you can get 8 Marks of Honor (5 for the quest, 3 from the win). This can be done on every 120 character you have and then you can mail the MoH to the character that needs them. The next one is in a couple of weeks, at the start of April.
For
Tailoring
, the Uncanny gear will sell from time to time, especially the cloaks as they can be worn by all classes. It's not as good as some of the other catch-up gear through world quests, but its a great way of boosting item level at the start in order to get the higher gear.
The
Tools of the Trade
for tailoring is not essential for the profession per se. but it does provide a very healthy boost to cloth drops on that character. If you are considering joining 2 x 4 farms for cloth, then it is essential to get good results.
The other option for Tailors is bags, always a consistent seller. The
Embroidered Deep Sea bags
are the best, but require
Tidalcores
which you get from doing high end dungeons. This makes Tailoring useful on your main if you do this often. Failing that, the
Deep Sea Bags
will still sell although bags from previous expansions can provide better profits.
Leatherworking
Leatherworking
is very similar to Tailoring in providing armour to fresh characters. It has the benefit of being able to make both Mail and Leather gear, but the requirement of twice the number of Marks of Honor. These are usually the most common of armours as many classes use them, so the market will be larger.
It is fairly easy to level up and does not require reputation to get into. However, there is not much else to Leatherworking other than Uncanny Bows and
Coarse Leather Barding
. The Tools of the Trade are not really useful for this profession.
Blacksmithing
Again,
Blacksmithing
is like the above two professions in the Uncanny gear it can provide. It has a larger range of weapons that can be made which helps the gold making potential. Similar to Leatherworking, the mount equipment
Monel-Hardened Stirrups
is useful as is the potential in
Monelite Reinforced Chassis
which is required for the
Xiwyllag ATV
mount
Overall, the above three profession are a little disappointing when compared to Legion. With Legion, we could craft high end artefacts which felt much more valuable and had a decent time component to them where they felt special.
Jewelcrafting
Sadly,
Jewelcrafting
only has a few items that still generate sales at this stage of the expansion. The Gems, the Uncanny Staves and Rings. Neither of these are in particularly high demand due to the lack of reasonable sockets and the staves being only a step towards higher gear. That said, there are still niches there and I wouldn't discount Jewelcrafting entirely.
Perhaps with the ability to put a socket in any item, we may see higher numbers of sales. Again this will vary depending on servers. The BoP Rings are quite good though, so it may be something to consider from a personal perspective.
Engineering
The great thing about Engineering is that it is quite unlike any other profession in that it is all about utility and filling gaps in unique ways. The way Engineering works is that there tend to be quite a few sub-crafts along the way to a final product. These sub-crafts can also be sold along with the end result, giving you more possibilities for sales.
There are a couple of good mounts that still sell such as the
Mecha-Mogul Mk2
and
Xiwyllg ATV
and some Uncanny weapons that might sell to specific buyers.
Cooking
As a Secondary profession,
Cooking
can be learned in addition to any others without filling the two available slots for main professions. Personal stat food such as
Bil'Tong
and
Baked Port Tato
as well as
raid-wide food
still sells and the new 8.3 recipes are useful for visions.
There is quite a high requirement for meat and fish, so getting a good source of those is recommended.
Overall, professions are a great way of making gold, especially if you have several of them. Even this late in the expansion, there are sales to be had if you can find a niche within your server. There is also the option of going deeper with any profession and learning older expansions as these can have some very interesting markets too.
If you are interested in looking into any of these professions further, Wowhead has some great
profession guides
ready to tell you all about them.
Hazel's Top 9 Ways to Make Gold
Hazel Nutty Games
has created a fantastic guide for some ideas for gold making including some of the crafting ones above. I highly recommend giving it a watch if you are looking for some ideas.
Brutosaur Calculator
This was a recent discovery for me amongst the many spreadsheets I have seen around. It's a very simple to use calculator with some suggestions for raw gold farms. Now, I personally wouldn't suggest raw gold farms if you want to be efficient, but it is simple and that ticks a box for many people.

This was brought to me by u/Bittercoffeestalker asking are
Old raids viable?
Greetings fellow goblins ! Still a learning goblin digging up some stuff for making gold to get my monthly subscription. As the title says , is old raids still a viable way to get the gold i need ? I have 5 max level toons for doing them. Playing the AH is just not for me and gathering mats is nearly impossible because of multiboxers and i dont mind doing a repetitive tedious grind. Whats your thoughts ?
Mute the Brutosaur Auctioneer
I know this it pretty much a first world problem, but some people may find the Dialog from the Brutosaur mount annoying after a while. Especially if you are hopping between characters and auctions - shopping, crafting and relisting.
u/oldworldriches
has posted a very handy workaround to mute the audio ...
Copy/paste
/run MuteSoundFile(1998116);MuteSoundFile(1998113)
I made this a macro, it persists through reload/switching characters but not a battle net relog.
There is also an addon called
MuteSoundFile
that will let you add the sounds plus any others so you don't have to listen to them anymore.
Breg's Gold Makers to Follow
And finally,
BregVids
has released another video shout out some of his favourite, perhaps lesser-known YouTube content creators.
These are...
Dala GG
Golden Routes
Hikons
Modest Millions
Dozy Games
