Greetings gents, as some of you rogues may know there was a problem with the trash mobs pickpocket loot table in the BoD raid, which basically filled the ah with BoE leather pieces 400+.

The trash mobs had the same loot table when pickpocket as they did when killed, which worked until last night. Some of you mighta already gotten the fat 415+ BoEs, only managed to get 3 myself before the silent fix. These couple of days have been some of the best days I was able to have with my rogue.

Starting from 2008, had always been interested in making gold from farming the first gold for the mount to pvp dueling for 100g in iron forge. Auctioneer had always been my staple and was scanning day and night with month/years of info piling up and getting a really good understanding of my server. Mind you it it one of the original servers to boot up but to this day, it is now a low/med pop server from the glory days of high/full. Gold was always a side game to be as my alt army started to build from 1 to 2. Now I have 11: 120 geared alts. I am not a altaholic so to say but really liked testing the game out fully with different characters. That included professions. I took a long break after pandaland came out and thought it was a joke and felt the game lost its edge as it catered to the main stream. Seeing commercials on TV with MR T made me realize that this game will probably never be the same. Then, I came back.

I had came back for legion but never really got back into it but did have 9 alts then and got them to max lvl. Bored but still used auctioneer to do scans and see what moves. Nothing much to say here as I had IRL calling me in my career so no more video games for a while.

BFA. Well, thats when I found out you could convert gold made into blizzard currency and really got me going as it was a goal to max everything out. From gold cap to blizzard balance. Once again, using auctioneer as scans and still seeing what moved and what did not. It will not tell you what moves but quantity and such. Then TSM came along. I had read several posts and videos and realized TSM was a great tool along with auctioneer. Downloaded/subbed and got to getting more and more into strings. ect.

My point of the post is, I understand my server fully because of the years spent on it. Reading forums/patch notes/datamines ect. So far in the past few months, I had started with only 50k gold. Now sitting at 1.3 mil + 6 mil in mats/transmogs. Not one hour of farm but really watching the auction house, seeing how many posts. Who posted what and buying low/selling high including worthy xmogs. IE chests/weapons/shoulders ONLY! With that being said, I have to thank this place because one thing that stood out that cannot be stressed more. YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR SERVER MARKET!

One tip is to monitor your server on theunderminejournal.com - it has both current and historical prices grouped by profession, by category (pets, transmog etc.). There are heat maps so you can see what time of day/week different items tend to list at what price, which can help you figure out when to buy.

For example, you might find that crafting materials get cheap over the weekend then spike on raid reset days (Tuesday). From that you can build a shopping strategy where you buy materials on Saturday morning, then craft and start posting things on Monday, Tues., Weds afternoon. This tends to work especially well for raid consumables (potions, flasks, vantus runes etc.).

Main Character Professions

Running with a singular main character without time or interest in running multiple characters will always bring the question 'Which professions should I go with?' - I get this a lot on stream and it's frequently asked in the WoW Economy Discord server. While I always say it's good to have one of each, sometimes you might genuinely only have the will to play one character. Thematically for an RPG you can combine professions like gathering and corresponding crafting profession such as Mining and Blacksmithing or Skinning and Leatherworking. You get to sustain yourself in terms of materials and you don't always have to rely on the supply of other materials on the Auction House to craft your goods. This takes a lot of time however, so I'd generally recommend complimenting whatever you farm for yourself with some additional purchases from the Auction House - at least you'll be able to scale up your crafting output somewhat.

/u/arcorian poses the question on reddit, seeking advice on which profession to switch from Mining:

I create my second character back in Lich King and made it my main with Enchanting/Mining. Since then, I haven't change these professions. Now, Im 100% positive that I do not want to change Enchanting. Im been considering to change mining since I started using TSM. TSM help so much to determine if X crafting is profitable or not, I was wondering if having two main professions in a main character is worth the effort, in terms of gold making? I want to change mining for Tailoring. So it will be Enchanting/Tailoring in my main character. What do you think? It worth it?

/u/scurvydog-uldum points out that most professions require reputation these days:

Pick professions that require reputation to get their rank 3 recipes. Grinding rep on an alt is a pain in the neck, and your main will pretty much get all the rep you need just by you running dungeons and doing emissaries and all that fun stuff you like doing on your main.

Another common combination is Tailoring and Enchanting, this has been a staple since vanilla WoW - particularly for casters. In modern times this combination has opened up a lot of niche opportunities like shuffling, which we discussed a little bit last week. /u/SpellNinja endorses the combo:

Enchanting is kind of funny and doesn't really count as a main profession, it's a "gathering" profession that sells enchants with the materials it gathers. Tailoring feeds into it perfectly because you can craft cheap items with abundant cloth and disenchant them. Tailoring/Enchanting is the consistently one of the best profession combos in the game and you'll be happy you switched.

Whether you're disenchanting the crafted items from Tailoring, or scrapping them with the BFA Scrapper, you're usually able to generate a profit from shuffling these items and selling the raw mats, or crafting something else with them and sell at a mark up. This can be time consuming, especially if you do only have one character but is steady and consistent gold so shouldn't be discounted.

For me personally, my main character doesn't have professions with a gold-making focus in mind. Since I play this character the most I picked professions that would improve my quality of life or make it easier to play, that's why I have Alchemy and Engineering. Alchemy is less of an important profession to me now since I stopped raiding, but being able to supply myself with consumables and enjoy a bonus duration to my flasks was very handy. Engineering is much more fun to make use of, compared to something like Herbalism to go with Alchemy - I can put a glider on my cloak, rockets on my belt and I can make gadgets and gizmos to teleport myself around Azeroth since my main is not a Mage.
