UnitSex Documentation Indicates Gender Customization May be Coming to World of Warcraft

While we've been busy datamining new
models
and
tier set changes
in this week's Patch 9.2 PTR build, Simaia has shared new findings on Twitter which indicate that additional gender customization may be coming to World of Warcraft.
Currently, the only place this index is used is for armor sets which change appearance based on gender - one robe model may be more revealing for females and use a different texture than males, which this index is used to annotate. At the same time, another robe which uses the same model for both genders would be marked as "both." This is nothing new though, all four options have been in the
database binary files
for at least several expansions, although "none" doesn't appear to have ever actually been used.
This change adding "both" to the table is on the
documentation side
. That information is used in the barber shop to change genders and affects the character appearance, as well as various quest dialogue and broadcast text. The inclusion of "both" in the documentation
may
indicate new options in the future, but is as of yet far from confirmed.
To be clear, this is
currently nothing more than speculation
, but raises an interesting question of whether Blizzard will move in a similar direction as other games within the industry. Theoretically, Blizzard could add these new options to the barber shop at any time, although how that would actually be represented within the game is uncertain.
The original table already lists male, female, and none, making "both" a new inclusion - although it and "none" are currently unused.
World of Warcraft would hardly be the first game to embrace idea though, as it's been a growing trend within the industry. Games such as
Pyre
,
Saints Row 4
, and
New World
already have options to allow players to pick their preferred pronouns, while several others break down traditional barriers by allowing players to use female hairstyles or makeup for men, and assign male voices to women. Last month,
the Sims community launched a petition
with over 20,000 signatures asking for gender neutral pronouns to be added to the game, prompting a response from publisher Electronic Arts on the technical difficulty of adding such a seemingly simple feature to the game.

When it comes to representation, it’s not a destination, it’s a journey that we are continuously working towards across the board. We’ve seen and read your comments regarding Non-Binary Pronouns and their availability in-game. At this time, we can’t confirm anything in regards to timing, but what we can say is that for a long time our team has been evaluating ways to add gender-neutral language while considering how complex it would be to do so. Currently, we’ve been investigating the changes needed considering not only the size of our game, but the possibilities for all of our 18 supported languages to make sure that we do this work the best way possible. This is super important to all of us, which means we want to make sure we do it right.
Whether this documentation change is a prelude to similar additions in World of Warcraft or merely coincidental remains to be seen, but it would be in line with Blizzard's other efforts to increase diversity and representation throughout their games. That said, it doesn't necessarily mean the feature would make it into Patch 9.2 either, as we've often seen early strings not manifest until several patches later, so this may even be an early glimpse at the next expansion following
Shadowlands
